"Back to the raw power and purity of discrete analog - where Studio Electronics started in 1985!
Boomstar is the ultimate desktop analog synthesizer for those who remember and desire the electronic analog sounds that changed the world. Choose between four models, each corresponding to a classic filter type:
4075: Classic Arp 2600
5089: Classic Moog 24db ladder
SEM: Classic Oberheim 12dB/Oct with sweepable Low-pass through High-pass
303: Classic Roland TB
The Boomstar is a superior analog music machine made in the USA. From it's discrete voltage controlled analog oscillators, to it's hand matched transistors in its filters and amplifiers, no compromises have been made and no corners cut. This is the real deal for those seeking truly fat analog sound at a reasonable price. The snap and punch of hardware envelopes drive the Boomstar's brilliant voltage controlled circuits with unparalleled sonic integrity and versatility. The Boomstars are even semi-modular, with easy to access front mounted CV and Audio inputs and outputs for different routing possibilities and use with other hardware. This is not your average modern analog synthesizer!
The Sound Engine and Controls
All discrete circuity. Hand matched transistors in filter and amplifier.

"Note this is from the last Studio Electronics production batch and has factory-fitted metal-shafts and Davies knobs!"
"This revolutionary all-analog synthesizer module combines two very cool multimode oscillators, sweet modulation options, and a killer amp/mixer section with a real Oberheim SEM-style multimode filter, allowing you to create a universe of creative and compelling tones. A full set of highly tweakable knobs make accessing the wide range of sound the Boomstar SEM has to offer easy. What's more, extremely intelligent CV and MIDI implementation make it easy to add a Studio Electronics Boomstar SEM module to your keyboard or studio rig."
"Boldly following in the footsteps of pioneers such as Moog and ARP, the Oberheim's SEM was one of the first synthesizer modules to feature a multimode filter that allowed artists to choose from highpass, lowpass, notch, and bandpass filters. What's more, this multimode filter could produce wildly varying tonal characteristics, making it easy to get a wide range of sound from an otherwise simple synth. The Studio Electronics Boomstar SEM module gives you the same versatile filter to play with on top of an already sophisticated synth, allowing you to experience this amazing sound in a whole new way."

Boomstar 4075 + Octatrack + TR8 + Devilfish 303
Published on Aug 23, 2014 Honeysmack
"First run demo with the Boomstar 4075 sequenced via MIDI from the Octatrack. Devilfish 303 is going through the Boomstar's external in for that extra layered sound.
Delay is the Boss Digital Delay RDD-10, with additional effects from the DP/2 and Fireworx (all not pictured).
Boomstar 4075 is the one with the ARP 2600 filter.
One single take, no edits, no post. Audio straight off the desk.

"What's nice about our OSCILLATION stunner (according to Tim) "is that the waveforms are DC-coupled [components connected directly together without any coupling capacitors], so they keep their shape even at sub-Hz speeds. The outputs are also buffered, so the amplitude is independent of the load they are driving. The waveform levels on some modern eurorack OSCs are often all different, and they vary depending if they go into the mixer or directly to the filter!" Coupling the circuitry without capacitors in-line gives the go-ahead for the full spectrum of frequencies to do their thing, and ensures near identical response over the years—audiophile, transistor-protecting signal path stuff here. You should see these beauts on the scope: a Class-A ballet of balance and proportion, only drawing modest current, rather evenly from plus and minus."

The Talking Booms of Mario Capretta

Raw files for supreme, artifact-free, listening joy:

http://studioelectronics.com/assets/A...
The foundation for this distinctly Analogian adventure is the Boomstar 3003 crunch 'n chunk sound, warmed-up nicely by Slate Digital's "Virtual Tape Machine." I intended to accent it merely with the ATC-1-ish cross-mod vocal sound lead work (way back in early Sept.), which re-interprets my uber-talented friend Grecco Burrato's rich and rootsy guitar solo at 2:29 in my CODE-filtered Theriot offering (http://studioelectronics.com/assets/A...), but I kept getting pulled back into the power and poetry of the B*s circuits and smashing performance-centered feature set.
The jazzy polyphony heard at the beginning after my Uncle Mario's chuckles (more from him later, much more), is all Boomstar 5089, arranged on piano and tracked one note at a time—credit DP8's split notes feature; patience and persistence make pretty, and we are off to the races: the twin herculean pillars of 3003 rhythm and lead making friends along the way with slidey, glidey, echoey, multi-tracked B* 5089 / 1970's slippery, synthy goodness, B* 4075's punchy percolated arpeggiations, square-waved octaved finger bass, B* SE-80's rim shots, tablas, claps, 70's and 80's session snares, tuned "Tubaleans" kicks-basses, major toms, SEM hi hats and crashes, all of which thins out dramatically at 3:06 for the 5089/SE80/4075/SEM bass and beats break—picked up by those 5089 faux muted guitars—commencing the beginning of the culmination, or so it seems. Really, the show is just getting started with the 5089 holding court with its sweet and foxy leads on the run—love that "The Sweet" joint, a radio rediscovery one schoolday morning which revitalized and repurposed the back nine of “The Talking Booms,” called again upon the ARP-peggiations, Glam Synth drive, and clearing the mind for the late 99 year Oracle at Cleveland, Uncle M.
What are we learning? What are we storing up inside?
Thanks for the listening and read,
Marc A. Theriot St. Regis - Thanksgiving-ish 2014
p.s. Apart from DP and various audio plugins—my DAW was my friend—everything is Boomstar, apart from a backwards piano snippet from a rejected short film score of mine, and the snappy kick drum, hit by our Fox mic pre, and wrapped with several 4075 and SE80 kicks, when things get Marley. Oh yes, and brilliant cousin Eve (Capretta) Rouveral does the marvelous Mario mining."

Stick around for 1:06 when the Boomstar kicks in.
Still enjoying the pocket operators, so much so I ordered the overpriced cases. It's a bit hilarious getting things re-synced after stopping the show. Part of the fun, I guess."

Studio Electronics Boomstar 5089 analog synth review - SoundsAndGear.com
Published on Mar 24, 2014 SoundsAndGear.com·629 videos
"http://SoundsAndGear.com - checking out a monster analog desktop synth from Studio Electronics from the Boomstart line. This is the 5089, which is based on the 24dB Moog style ladder filter. If you want thick classic analog tones, this is definitely one to checkout. It has plenty of knobs and switches, with crazy modulation options as well as some modular style patch points. This is one of the current lineup of six Boomstar synths, each has it's own filter type. Stay tuned for more videos on the rest of the family!

The Boomstar SE80 is a monophonic synthesizer made by Studio Electronics. It has filters inspired by the legendary Yamaha CS-80 and sounds like a dream.

Studio Electronics BoomStar 8106 Jam - Jupiter/Juno Filter
video upload by Aperture Sound Lab
"A solid Jam with a simple arp-y melody. Boomstar is (by a mile) the best monosynth I've ever played. So good in fact that I ended up handing off the Matrixbrute just to afford one. The unit you see here in this video is the one Voltage&Co was kind enough to lend me. I've got my own 8106 boomstar with slightly darker wood that'll be a mainstay here for quite sometime. This jam is just a short example of what it can do. More of these to come..."

Shootout at the Boomstar Corral - Resonant Filter Comparison by Marc St. Regis
Published on Jan 9, 2014 StudioElectronics·14 videos
"What was it they used to say in the '70s at the end of the 'Streets of San Francisco' opening credits? ... WITH SPECIAL GUEST STAR DREW NEUMANN.
Yeah that was it... wait for him.
The SoundCloud copy reads: "A Tombstone quality Boomstar 5089, 4075, 3003 filter shoot out/comparison. No tricks: no compression/limiting or gain maximizing, EQ, or plugins, just those snappy Studio Electronics hardware envelopes doin' work.
Each of the three Boomstar low-pass resonant filter synths have been put through near identical paces----no mean feat without programmability: and why would you want that in this purist platform? Artifacts and curtains would be in and in front of the sound, slowing and coloring, demanding tribute.
Patch matching contrasting hardware analog synths is not an exact science (sometimes a switch is missed or a pot or two is not precisely placed--you were sure you took a photo of that da#$ patch!) and tangy tangents are often explored at the end of certain sequences, once all the comparison fences have been cleared, but great care was taken to duplicate the settings and live switch flipping, knob turning and flying of the master performance, which could start out on any of the B*s depending upon mood and blind chance----if there is such a thing; mood is as palpable as approaching deadline storms."
c.f., https://soundcloud.com/studio-electro...
But this is no mere SC re-tread: surprises, extended/edited and fresh material awaits.
That should cover the primary speil...
Performed by Marc St. Regis, with the marvelous exception of Drew Neumann's sharing of his 'Big Drum' vision on "Jehan's Mental Martaize," on which the 'no compression/limiting or gain maximizing, EQ' prohibition was specially dispensated off corral and ranch.
Enjoy,
Marc A. Theriot St. Regis 1-9-13 (my #1 son's 19th birthday), Stevenson Ranch, CA"
