Cognition 303: Bassline Deviations by Various Artists Celebrating the 40-Year History of the TB-303

Also on https://www.clananalogue.org/ where you'll find the release on other platforms including Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music. Note this release features supporting members of the site!

"Cognition 303: Bassline Deviations celebrates the 40-year history of the TB-303, its status as the last great iconic instrument of electronic music, and explorations of its newest sonic manifestations. The TB-303 has become one of the most used, modified and cloned instruments in electronic music. For Cognition 303 Clan Analogue artists from across Australia heeded the call to create a new selection of sounds exploring all versions of this instrument and its expanding musical lineage.

The Roland TB-303 Bass Line machine was a discarded device of the 1980s, forgotten as shiny digital synths became the industry standard of polished pop and stadium rock. However a new generation in the late 80s and early 90s reclaimed these analogue relics from pawn shops and Trading Post adverts, inspired by the new sounds of techno, house and electronic experimentalism. These young artists became the flagbearers for new musical movements which swept through the 1990s. From this era Clan Analogue was born, Australia’s longest-running and most influential electronic music collective, now celebrating 30 years of underground electronic music activity.

Cognition 303 spans the styles associated with the TB-303 and pushes them into new and unexpected directions. Techno superstar Honeysmack collaborates with T-Rek for one of his famed acid techno bangers. Australian dance music pioneer Andy Rantzen teams up with fellow 303 lover Ryan Spinoglio to give us a stripped-back funk exploration using four TB-303s. Composite Cone and Klaps celebrate the famed Robin Whittle 303 Devilfish modification. Vision Four 5 produce an anthemic piece of stadium techno while KOshowKO channels the legendary Charanjit Singh by blending the 303 with non-Western instruments. Suspect and Factorypreset, two halves of the seminal Dark Network, each create a piece of hypnotic ambient acid house groove - just some of the squelchy masterpieces on Cognition 303.

Download Cognition 303 from Bandcamp for a bonus collection of 14 more Australian 303 tracks from Clan Analogue’s artists, including Bleepin' J Squawkins, Ming One and dyLAB.

TR707 blinkenlights Screen Replacement for the Roland TR-707

This one is in via @dylab

via synth.ewancolsell.com:

"One of the bad things that can happen to a TR707 is the LCD becoming Damaged, either by exposure to too much sunlight, liquid damage, bad luck, etc.

Whilst it is entirely possible to use a TR707 without looking at the screen, it isn't much fun. after repeatedly hearing people on the internet, searching in vain for replacement tr707 screens, i decided to have a go at making a replacement. my tr727 screen works perfectly, so it's a perfect opportunity to develop a replacement.

i was originally going to do this with an OLED, but finding a cheap one the right size was kind of hard. So i decided to go down a different path. Lots of little Leds and a couple of Led controller chips.

There are few question marks for this project still, especially regarding power consumption, i'm going to have to determine experimentally how little power i can get it to consume, by running the leds at the lowest possible duty cycle.

Also tbd is a nice way of attaching it to the TR707 without drilling holes in it.

This is only part of the screen replacement project, the other half is the MCU that will decode the data from the TR707 CPU. i'm sure that's going to have a few surprises."

Mystery Vintage Drum Machine Spotted in "What We Started" Documentary

Update: video added above.

This one was spotted by @DyLAB

It comes in at 11:36 in "What We Started" on Netflix. Cool documentary with tons of synth spotting BTW.

Anyone know what it is? I thought it might be a mixer but in the film you can see the LEDs moving left to right as in a sequencer.

As some of you know Moby was a huge collector of drum machine. He sold them off in 2018. I captured them here. What's pictured to the left here isn't in that post. If you know what it is, leave a comment.

Update: and it's an ETA Stage Lighting System 1234 controller. Thanks to those that left a comment.

Some pics and details via this auction

"Professional lighting system comes with 8 channel 4 scene ETA Stage Lighting System 1234 controller with ETA 1235 remote footswitch stage controller. Two Model 1250 600 watt dimmer packs, two tripod stands and light bars, 8 PAR 56 light cans with slides and gels, cables and chords Controller can be used by sound board with 50 ft snake to stage remote override. All channels can be individually dimmed. Controlller has both scene and channel chase features, fade to black. Channel and scene chase can be triggered remotely with an input from a sound board."

Published on Oct 30, 2016

One more video below.

"Interactive birthday cards have come a long way. Back in the day they used to only play the "happy birthday" tune and badly at that. These days the cards are so much better. Recently I had a birthday and got a drum card where you could actually play the drums! I decided to pull the thing apart and make myself a pocket drum set. Find out how to make one in the following link."

Ultimate Percussion Green K2-X Analog Synthesizer System Rare Drum Machine

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Ultimate Percussion K2-X Analog Synthesizer System
8 Channel drum/synth with built in sequencer

This is a rare monster of a drum synth - Good luck ever seeing one of these guys again.
This UP K2-X sounds big, warm, punnchy and tough, works great and its built like a tank! All metal.
Used by Warp Records artists Plaid - in this link you can see it in their studio.
Have a listen to them to get a vibe of the sound of this.
8 trigger inputs
Individual outputs + stereo main outputs and headphone output
One special Bass drum channel
One special Snare channel
Six completely tuneable oscillator synth channels
All channels have these controls - Level, Pan, Trigger Sensitivity, Decay, Bite, Noise Filter, Noise + VCO mix, VCO pitch and VCO Sweep
All channels have Pulse button - Pulse generates an in temp trigger, good to get you tweaking right away
All channels have Preset Mode button - allows two different sound settings
Physical condition - As you can see in the photos some knobs are missing their caps and some caps are attached but need a little glue to keep them from spnning. There is one missing led light but everything functions and all knobs are clean. Marks and scratches visible in photos. Nothing major. Youll see some tape on the bottom also, you can just take that off though.

Audio condition - all good."

Bitchin' Sync Box on Acid Box Blues

via dyLab's Acid Box Blues

"This is a great little din sync clock box. Basically it takes clock pulse or din sync and split it to the other din sync ports. It has 6 din sync sockets which is the same number of din sync clock driven gear that I have. The added bonus of this is by using something like RV0 Din Sync plugin or the Expert Sleepers Silent Way Din Sync generator I can run all the machines from the computer and have them locked tight without the midi conversion latency or other issues. Also the box has 2 clock inputs so you can run half the box at one BPM and half the box at another BPM."

The Bitchin' Sync box is made by Bryan Benting.
