Skrillex - Bangarang - Old School Computer Remix

Published on Mar 13, 2013 bd594·24 videos

I spy MATRIXSYNTH in this one. :)

".
Skrillex was the most requested so your wish is my command. Bangarang was a complicated song with respect to timing and now I have a new respect for Dubstep. For all the haters out there the audio in this video is 100% in sync with the original song. If you don't believe me then test it out for yourself.

Vocals were performed with the DECTalk Express. The same speech synthesizer used by Stephen Hawking back in the eighties. The main vocals are the Betty and Rita presets overlapped. Kit and Dan vocal presets were also used.

Back in 2009 I used an 8 inch floppy drive in my Bohemian Rhapsody video but this time I wanted to update it with Sammy1am's Arduino version. I find 3.5 inch floppy drives only sound good when playing short duraton notes with a fast tempo.

DECTalk - vocals
HP Scanjet 3C - lead
Yamaha CX-5 computer - guitar
Floppy and CDROM - lead bass solo
Modified Toy Laser Guns
Robot Bass, Snare and Cymbal"

Also see the following or click here for all of them in order:

Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know - Old School Computer Remix

YouTube Published on Sep 28, 2012 by bd594

"HP Scanjet 3C as the vocals. It lags a bit due to the fast paced vocals. In order for the stepper motor to play a note it has to be moving and with that large carriage it takes a few milli seconds before it can play a note. It doesn't sound like a lot of time but stretch that over a 4 minute song and voila...out of sync. Programming does help to compensate but it is not perfect.
Amiga 600 Bass on left audio output and Guitar on right audio output
Each audio channel was feed into an oscilloscope
2 Harddrives as the drums and cymbal
Xylophone as the Xylophone (duh)
Both the Harddrive and Xylophone are controlled by one PIC16F84A mircocontroller"

bd594 also brought us the following mechanical hits:

Thingamagoop 2 from Bleep Labs

flickr By kevin dooley

"The Thingamagoop 2, an amazing "handmade, analog and digital synthesizer you control with light" from Bleep Labs.

This is definitely the most bizarre "instrument" I have ever played, and one of the most fun, and I look forward to making some random noise symphonies.

This little robot is very 2012-ish."

Little Drummer Boy Performed by Robot Snare Drum and HP Scanner

YouTube Uploaded by bd594 on Dec 12, 2011

"Hello I would like to thank all my channel subscribers for joining and have a safe holiday and a Merry Christmas

BD594, Toronto, Canada

This project was a really difficult, it was 70% timing and 30% execution. Many people have seen videos with floppies and stepper motors playing songs. These motors have a quick response time because they are not under a heavy load. The problem with a flatbed scanner is the large moving carriage head. It was not designed to move quickly and when it is playing music you will notice the head changes directions. This is to prevent the carriage from smashing into the chassis. So as the notes are playing the carriage head has to periodically change direction and this will add many seconds to a 3 or 4 minute song. As for the drums they are just a couple of solenoids connected to a pulley system in order to ampilfy the movement.

enjoy"

Jamming with Clara 2.0 the theremin playing robot doll

YouTube Uploaded by SpacedogTelevisor on Nov 3, 2007

"Named in honour of the original theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, Clara 2.0 is a robot doll who can play the theremin live. I call her the 'polite robot thereminist' as she listens to a line from another player and moves her dolly arm to get her own theremin in perfect tune. Well, that's the theory...

In this jamming session, Clara 2.0 is copying a line from an old Roland SH-2 synth (which I play silently), then the line from my own theremin. When the two theremins play together, it gets quite chaotic as Clara tries to follow me - and I try to lock into Clara's line.

As Clara 2.0 is continually monitoring a live sound and adjusting her tuning (no midi here), her technique has the fluid pitch of a human player. Everything on this recording - apart from the drum track - is played live. There is no manipulation of the recorded sound, apart from multitracking and a little reverb after the event. The keyboard instrument at the beginning is a cheapy toy, called an Angel Organ - I hope you can forgive its cranky tuning. The final theremin melody has been treated, live, with an old-school vocal flanger.

Clara is under continual development - she has quite a way to go before she can claim the talents of Lev (a great robot player). Keen-eyed observers may have noticed the wobbily thread of wire on the end of Clara's egg whisk. This gives her some Rockmoresque vibrato.

I do attempt to incorporate Clara 2.0 into my stage act although she can be temperamental. Recently, I've been trying to improve her earthing and capacitance so she can be set up swiftly and can work more reliably 'out of the box'.

Thanks to everyone at Dorkbot London and the Hands off Festival, 2007, for their encouragement and useful tips. In particular, I'd like to thank theremin maker Jake Rothman for his extremely useful electrical advice (Clara's insides are now lined with silver foil) and Gordon Charlton, whose virtuosic egg whisk numbers inspired Clara's current look. Thanks also to Emmet Spier for screwing her arms on better, Mike Blow for suggesting I try out this classic tune and Colin Uttley for playing the bass riff. Apologies to the great Roy Budd, composer of the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Get Carter theme.

S-CAT Drone Synth

My friend brought this round for me to look at to see if I could expand on what S-CAT did. It sounded pretty good anyway. Here's what I've done.

Now 9v battery powered

On/Off Switch

Lime LED (removed Volume pot)

Pitch Control - taken lower for cut up grainy stuff on the noise bend

On/Off Switch for the main mod. When the mod is off this unit is like a little noise generator with beeps, bleeps and tones.. it now has more sounds to play with!

5 toggle switches which loop the normal sounds and the modded sounds so you have a better control over the pitch, buttons and switches.

JX3P DT200 tweaking by Alien Robot Dance

YouTube Uploaded by se7ense7 on Jun 13, 2011

"Another clip of some tweaking on the PG200 clone from DTronics. The DT200 is made especially for the Roland JX3P and MKS-30 synthesizers.

The JX3P is a really good sounding analog DCO synth from 1983. The programmer makes it a little nit easier to program, but you don't really need it as it's - althoug it's a little tedious - possible to edit every paramtere from the front panel - even while running the internal sequencer."

JX3P DT200 APC40 jam (alien robot dance)

YouTube Uploaded by se7ense7 on May 21, 2011

"I did a first jam, trying out the brand-new DT200 (Roland PG200 clone for JX3P and MKS-30 synths made by dtronics at www.engineersatwork.nl).

No presets used.

The APC40/ableton combination is a real life-saver for doing these kinds of jams. The drumloops were prepared, but that's about the only thing...

When you see me doing stuff, but you don't hear anything, that's because I'm cue-ing the sounds before recording them. The jam gets a little boring (or starts of a little boring) but I didn't want to cut out any parts."

robot gibberish with bit blob jr.

YouTube via Uploaded by bowmoneydrums on Mar 8, 2011

"this is a bit blob jr. kit from bleeplabs.com...they make the best beginner kits for synths, and they always produce really awesome chaotic sounds...

anyways...this thing is like a musical amoeba...just touching it alters the sound, and then you have the little patch chords to mess with...i don't think i have heard the same weird sounds twice... sometimes it's very rhythmic, sometimes very melodic, sometimes too much to handle haha

I don't even really like "noise" music or whatever you want to call it, but something about unbridled lawlessness of sound is opening a new door in my drummer brain

sorry about the out of focus video...actually...no, i kind alike it...it looks like a bad polaroid"

Roland TR-505 - jas_justareview010 from Kaare Bøje on Vimeo.

"Recently bought this little machine for an outdoor project (it runs on batteries).
It's plastic and very limited, but I like it and especially if you add some wah, distortion and delay. This video was made only to give you a glimpse of the Roland TR-505 in action and to give you some sort of impression on how it sounds. This is the pure sound of a Roland TR-505 (nothing added).

Free iPhone Apps by Pulse Code

Four free apps via Pulse Code

DB-303: [iTunes link]
DB-303 is a Roland TB-303 emulator. We have a TB-303 and we ran it through test after test to get the sound of the DB-303 emulator as close as we could. We even measured all of the knobs and buttons of the real TB-303 and modeled them in 3D to get the look of the classic synth. This app is more complex than most apps out there, but it is definitely easier to program than the real thing! You can find an owner's manual here.

BtBx: [iTunes link]
BtBx is a music sequencer based on the X0X style step sequencer. Each sound can be pitch shifted on each step to create melodies and rhythms. Each session has 8 drum sounds, 2 instrument sounds, and 2 synthesizer sounds. There is the ability to load kits and sessions. You can find the owner's manual here.

Android FX: [iTunes link]
Android FX is a simple sound effects generator to create, robotic vocal sound effects. Under the hood, there are 8 oscillators, a noise generator, a low pass filter, distortion effect, and a delay effect. The controls aren't typical to a synthesizer, but are a descriptions of your android. You can find an owner's manual here.

Joke Bot: [iTunes link]
Joke Bot is a text to speech synthesizer disguised as a robot who tells extremely corny jokes. The voice has been modified to be a little more robotic and it is sometimes hard to understand. If you can't understand it, touch the screen on the robot's body to see the joke while he reads it. If you want to have him say something you write, touch the keypad on his arm to bring up a keyboard.

And two paid apps:

Polywave: [iTunes link]
Polywave is a polyphonic graphic synthesizer built from the basic elements of subtractive synthesis. Polywave has one oscillator, one filter, one envelope, one LFO, and a 4 octave touch pad.

Polywave has been designed to teach the user the basic building blocks of subtractive synthesis to the budding sound designer. What will interest the more advanced users is the fact that the oscillator, envelope, and LFO waveforms can be drawn on screen with a swipe of your finger. This means that waveform that would be extremely hard to create with traditional methods are now easy.

We do include presets of standard waveforms if you need that perfect saw, square, sine, etc.

The interface is very simple and while you play notes, you can see the output waveform under your finger. The purpose is for the user to see the sounds they creating and how the controls affect the sounds, in other words, bringing the visual element into learning sound design.

Polywave takes advantage of the retina display on the iPhone4.

RVT-1: [iTunes link]
RVT-1 (Realtime Voice Transformer) is a vocal pitch shifter with modulation and reverb. It has big controls and an easy to understand layout. To use it, a microphone is required and headphones are recommended. RVT-1 has the ability to record the effect and play it back. It also automatically saves the current recording to the UIPasteboard for use in other audio applications. Since RVT-1 is a realtime effect, the output is always via the headphone output (or ear piece) because the external speaker at the bottom will cause extreme feedback with the microphone input. If you don't have headphones handy, then you can hold the device up to your ear and talk into it as if it was a regular phone call (that is, if your device is an iPhone!).

RVT-1 takes advantage of the retina display on the iPhone4.

Xbase Bassdrum goes through M-resonator and in the same time through the Analogue Solutions SY02 routed via the mackie mixer as extra channels.

The mackie mixer generated also the little plate reverb for the XBase HiHats and the Evolver mainline. The Evolver also added Delay and a bit feedback EFX for the mainline.

All Signals goes into the SSL 4000G Buscompressor for a niceful little compression.

Thanks for watching. May you're machines be with you!
