Industrial Sound Controllers

YouTube via makemagazine | July 29, 2010

"Tristan Shone rolled out the 'big guns' for Maker Faire Bay Area 2010. His Industrial Sound Controllers are a musical force to be reckoned with and their sheer size and weight demand considerable attention upon seeing them firsthand.

Tristan took a few moments out from setting up to speak with Becky Stern before performing, and explained some of the functionality of his very custom gear. For more on his unique brand of 'heavy metal', be sure to check out the interview in MAKE, Volume 22 and the how-to on building your own 8-mic MIDI controller -

Weekend Projects - Optical Tremolo Box

YouTube Published on Aug 23, 2012 by makemagazine

"Complete instructions for this episode of Weekend Projects can be found at
http://makeprojects.com/Project/Optical-Tremolo-Box/2276/1

Inspired by Charles Platt's "Stomp Box Basics" article (MAKE Volume 15, page 82), follow along as we build this Optical Tremolo Box, which reads a patterned disk with a light sensor to create a warbling audio effect (tremolo).

For this project, MAKE Technical Editor Sean Ragan used a cadmium sulfide photoresistor to provide us with our light sensor - a component we have used in previous Weekend Projects. Not only does it look cool and sound great, but once you've made the project, you can customize it by making your own effects disks!"

Collin's Lab: Kit-making

YouTube via makemagazine

"When recently faced with the dauntingly tedious task of assembling my first-ever batch of electronics kits, I was lucky enough to have the ever-helpful eye of seasoned kit-maker Becky Stern close by. While observing my one-man assembly 'process', Becky advised a more efficient, modular assembly line technique using intermediary storage vessels better known as "plastic cups". Streamlining the process left me with plenty of time to cook up some some unusually fancy title/motion graphics for the above-seen video.

Circuit Skills: Circuit Board Etching

YouTube via makemagazine. See more synth centric makemagazines posted here.
"Making your own printed circuit board can be a truly satisfying process, tying together electronics and the handmade craft of etching. It's the most accurate way to build a circuit short of sending away to a PCB manufacturer and it's a lot more fun (+ cheaper too!)."
