Making Techno with Music Robots

Published on Sep 10, 2018 Moritz Simon Geist

Details:
"After playing Mutek, CTM and Moogfest, and years of fabrications, tweaks, tests – winning also Visual Music Award 2017 and Initiative Music 2017/18 – robotics engineer and media artist Moritz Simon Geist releases world’s first techno album entirely played by real robots!

Produced by Mouse On Mars' Andi Thoma and due out in November, 'Robotic Electronic Music' is Moritz' debut album, to explore and pioneer the sounds of the more than ever robotized society of nowadays.

'Robotic Electronic Music' is pure mechanical music: precise, pneumatic patterns repeat themselves exploring the sound of mechanics, but none of its beats is like the other.

The album is being preceded by an EP due out in October, inaugurating Sonic Robots Records
(distributed by Kompakt), a label all about automations, mechanics and... techno."

Making Techno with Robots - Behind the Scenes!

Published on Sep 10, 2018 Moritz Simon Geist

"New sounds from the future! Here I explain, which robots I used for the Techno robots video. Everything you hear and see comes from robots. No syntheziser, samplers or CGI added! We want to show a futuristic way of creating music - without synthezisers, but with robots in the real world!

All Robots were built by Moritz Simon Geist and the team of SONIC ROBOTS. This production was funded by the Initiative Musik and the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen.

Camera and Cut: Robert Arnold / Cuthead"

And the press release:

Moritz Simon Geist, media artist and robotic musician, publishes his first record. It is the world's first techno record played entirely by self-made futuristic robots.

All of the sounds on his records are played by robots: small motors that beat on metal, futuristic 3D-printed robo-kalimbas, salvaged parts from old hard drives that click and cut. It took Geist several years to build, tweak, test and play all his DIY robotic instruments.

His 'Sonic Robots' try to push the boundaries of the imaginable. He did so already in 2012 with his well-known oversized 808 robot – an iconic drum machine gotten real, 4 by 2 meter, filled with robotic parts which play the instruments live and in front of the audience.

Now, Moritz Simon Geist goes even further to discover the unknown and futuristic world of techno robotics. For this quest, he teamed up with the Berliner sound wizards from Mouse On Mars and dug deep in the history of mechanical music and experiments of early electronic music.

Mark & Nyle Steiner - NuEVI from Berglund Instruments - Day One

Published on May 31, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Nyle Steiner, virtuoso and inventor of the EVI, day one with the NuEVI. Video of his first in-person impressions, testing and lots of playing. Nyle has given his full blessing to this great instrument's creation and has assisted as an official consultant.

It was a special and legendary experience to recently deliver to Nyle his own NuEVI... which came all the way from the brilliant programmer/designer/musician, Johan Berglund in Sweden.

We talked, tested and explored, and playing the instrument was so engaging, we kept getting distracted and just enjoyed the music... so there is a lot to see and hear. The date was 5/23/2018.

Thank you, Steve Anderson for starting the 'Save the EVI' movement and to Johan Berglund for creating this amazing instrument... the NuEVI."

My 1st NuEVI Demo - Mark Steiner

Published on May 23, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo with built in midi rotator. All sounds are digial instruments in Logic. Analog and modular demo soon to come. Endless thanks to Nyle Steiner, Johan Berglund, Steve Anderson, James Ingenito, and Robo Sax. For updates and to be on the waiting list, please email TheNuEVI@gmail.com. Please help us keep the EVI from becoming extinct by telling your trumpet player friends... and why not... even tuba, euphonium, French horn... or anyone who just wants to play one of the most amazing instruments to recently emerge on Earth."

A Tasty Pixel Releases Samplebot - New Sampling App for iOS w/ Jimmy Fallon Clip

Uploaded on Sep 16, 2017 ATastyPixel

A Tasty Pixel who brought us Loopy HD, has a new app in town, Samplebot. Details follow, along with the the Jimmy Fallon clip.

"Record or import sound clips, play them back on colorful pads and record and layer the results to build songs. That’s the idea behind Samplebot, the playful new sampler app for iPhone and iPad from the developer of award-winning apps Loopy and Audiobus.

Samplebot, launching today, uses a grid of large colored pads to represent audio clips which can be recorded live or imported from elsewhere to create remixes of other material. Clips can then be played back with a touch, or recorded and layered with other sounds using the app’s sequencer. Sequence looping allows users to build up songs quickly and easily.

'I’ve always loved finding ways to make music fun and immediate, to encourage creativity without having to wrestle with complex tools,” said A Tasty Pixel director and developer Michael Tyson. “Samplebot’s just good fun to play with. During development I was entertaining our 7-month-old little boy, recording and playing back his squeaky teether toy. I made a little song right there, out of the stuff around us: That’s the kind of experience I strive for.'

Samplebot was featured earlier this month in an Instagram post from The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon, with a playful cover of Shawn Mendes’ 'There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back'.

Samplebot joins A Tasty Pixel’s other widely-acclaimed and award-winning apps Loopy and Audiobus. It can be found on the App Store at the special launch price of $US2.99 and is compatible with iPhone and iPad.

-

Device Requirements: iPhone 5s or newer, iPad Air or newer, or iPod Touch 6th Generation; running iOS 10 or newer.

About A Tasty Pixel: One-man app development studio A Tasty Pixel, otherwise known as Michael Tyson, is on a mission to create beautiful and inspiring music making experiences. Having created the widely-acclaimed live-looping app Loopy, and the revolutionary audio routing platform Audiobus, A Tasty Pixel continues to relentlessly pursue the very best in user experience and creativity. A Tasty Pixel products have been extensively featured by Apple and have won a number of awards."

iTunes: Samplebot - A Tasty Pixel

"Samplebot is a collector of sounds. It's a crafter of songs. It's a finger-drummable looping sequencer of rainbow glory, and it wants to be your friend. Come. Play. Robo-boogie.

- Record or import samples, then play them back on beautiful, sproingy rainbow pads!
- Then record or input arrangements using the sequencer, featuring built-in drum patterns, loop record and playback, quantization and copy/paste
- Trim samples, and adjust volume and balance for the perfect mix
- Share your creations to Facebook, or export them to other music apps
- Comprehensive MIDI control with velocity, for play using a grid controller like the Launchpad
- Helpful and fun-loving intro tutorial"

The new album Robotiques, a concept album by a robot named The VX-323, is now available. You'll find the full details here.

"Welcome! I am The VX-323, serial number 07EC13-08, formerly a factory robot but now I am an electronic recording artist. I hope you enjoy my style of robo-pop!"

The VX-323 New Robo Album Out July 1, 2014!

http://www.thevx-323.com - click through for video and audio!

"The VX-323 returns with 7 new songs in his visionary electronic robo-pop style – 1982 meets 2082. The new album, Robotiques, crackles with energy, hooks, and...humanity.

The robot musician uses the digital voices in his real-time OS to sing songs about both the machine and human worlds, imbuing them with wonder and warmth. It’s the singularity meets Serge Gainsbourg.

Tracks:

1.Android Sex Doll...has feelings, too. Up-tempo synth pop torch song

2. Euro Star...minimal old-school electro love song, feat. CR-78 and vocoder

3. Chain Smoking...jittery robo-grunge- dub, will get the kids on the dance floor (and to the tabac)

4. Souls...clanging, buzzing meditation on being made in the image of your creator

5. Les Parisiens...synth pop love story about the coolest kids on the planet

6. Pets...rollicking jam about a robot and his lost pet

7. I Dream...soundscape of a robot in sleep mode. Electric!"

BTW, some of you might remember the VX-323 from this post back in 2009 as well as Bitnotic's speech synth posted back in 2008.

Lunetta Guitar Gen-Ottonix 01

Published on Feb 13, 2014 NakagawaGakki·52 videos

"Very First test for the Gen-Ottonix 12string Robo-guitar.
Just like the large 8string version this is made with all analogue CMOS discrete circuitry. A portable Modular Synth controlled string instrument in a vintage briefcase. No programming, coding, micro controllers nor computers of any kind.
This patch was testing the delay circuits on the muting solenoids and the nice buzzing sounds of aluminium foil on the strings.
More videos to follow."

Oberheim DRUMMER Perf/x midi interactive programmer

via this auction

"Breathe new life into your drum machine, percussion module or workstation. Drummer is an interactive drum pattern sequencer that signals an end to the tedious chore of programming each and every beat, without resorting to stiff "Robo-Beats".

Drummer features one hundred drum "Patterns", including user programs. Each Pattern can be assigned one of 100 rhythmic "Feels", a tempo, time signature. and one of eight "Extra Percussion" settings, creating a Drummer "Preset". It is these "Feels" that give Drummer its characteristically human fiavor. Each Preset can be assigned to play one of the sixteen programmable "Kits" in the Drummer, used to organize the percussion and drum sounds in your rig. Presets can be strung together in up to sixteen full "Songs".

Like any good drummer, the Oberheim Drummer listens and reacts to your playing. Dynamics, fills. and other features can all be set to follow and respond to your MIDI performance in one of the unique Drummer "Jam" modes. Files can be saved and loaded via MIDI. Four footswitch jacks allow for real time performance control of the Oberheim Drummer.

Drummer
The Oberheim engineers have designed the perfect tool for creating drum pattems, rhythms and fills to interface to drum machines and modules...the Drummer. By adding the Drummer to a MIDI setup, stilted mechanical drum pattems are a thing of the past. The Drummer is easy to use and makes drum tracks come alive allowing more time to be spent on other aspects of the music.

With over 10,000 different rhythm possibilities, the Drummer has just about everything needed to expand drum programming. In addition, there is a built in sequencer which will allow new patterns to be recorded. Finally, if that was not enough. the Drummer has an interactive mode called "Jam" which will follow the tempo set by MIDI IN data (from a keyboard or drum trigger).

The Drummer will become a valuable addition to live performances. recording sessions and compositions. Now everyone can have drum tracks that sound like they were played by a live drummer. Here are more of the impressive features of the Drummer:

· Randomized "human" drum fills
· 16 Programmable drum kits
· 100 Presets (Pattern and Rhythm)
· Song Mode (Preset chain)
· Programmable Fills in Song Mode
· Jam Mode (Drummer will follow playing styles)
· Supports MIDI Sysex for storage of Pattems and Songs
Four foot switch inputs (Start; Break; Add Percussion; Fill-In )
· Programmable Tempo and Time Signature."

::vtol:: dSpacer

::vtol:: dSpacer

"Dual DSP, 4 channel module. Can be used as FX processor and standalone sound generator (programed or feedback based).

part of the "system"

Each DSP has 7 internal programs (bank_1):

- chorus-reverb
- flange-reverb
- tremolo-reverb
- pitch shift
- echo
- Reverb 1
- Reverb 2

8 more custom programs can be added to each DSP with external EEPROM (bank_2). Custom programs, such as random noise generators, granulators, DCO, etc. will be available later on EEPROM chips (easy to add - no soldering will be required). By installing two custom EEPROM chips three different banks of programs can be stored inside, with any two available simultaneously.

- 3 pots with modulation inputs for each DSP

- External processor clock input on each DSP (any logic level clock source)

- 1 square wave high frequency generator for DSP clock modulation

- 2 banks: internal (7 programs) and EEPROM (8 programs)

- 4 inputs/4 outputs

Depending on the program various combinations can be achieved:

mono in > mono out x4
mono in > stereo out x2
stereo in > stereo out x2

So up to 4 individual FX programs can be connected in series.
