Q105 Patch Tutorial

video upload by synthesizersdotcom

"We are working on a series of patch tutorials to get people started with their new rigs!

What do you think of the format of the video? Let us know how we can make it better!

A quick video showing a simple Q105 Slew Limiter patch.

The Q105 Slew Limiter is used to limit the change in a signal.
This function is sometimes referred to as 'Glide', 'Glissando', 'Lag Processing', or 'Portamento'.
The amount of limitation is set by a front panel control.
Use the Slew Limiter as a portamento control by routing the keyboard's pitch control voltage through the Limiter then to an oscillator.
Use the Slew Limiter as an 'AR' (Attack, Release) envelope generator by patching in a square wave from the keyboard gate, oscillator or sequencer to control an amplifier or filter.
A switch selects which edge is limited - rising, falling or both.
A manual push button allows the operator to disable the module's function and a jack provides a way to enable/disable using an external signal or a foot switch (useful for portamento control).
An LED indicator shows enabled/disabled status."

Korg SQ-64 Quick Test -Take 2

video upload by John L Rice

"Take 2 of the previous test sequence and patch. Instead of both VCOs doubling the melody the second VCO is now playing a bass line sequence. Also the melody line is now modulating the filter resonance and the bass line is modulating the panning. I also incorporated the @corsynth glide module for the melody and switched to using the internal @synthesizersdotcom module for the reverb since the Quantec I used on the last video doesn’t translate well to mono on my iPhone! 🤔 I’m also using the SQ-64’s keyboard mode to transpose by octaves.

Thanks for watching my baby steps experiments! ;-)"

New Synthesizers.com Q169 OSCILLATOR++ In the Works

via @eriksuperlazy

"I was looking at the @synthesizersdotcom Q167 LFO++ the other day and almost bought a couple more used Q106 oscillators last week. Meanwhile, I'm lucky enough to have gotten a message from James of Synthesizers.com to meet up with a few others for dinner while he's in town, and look at what he drops in front of me. Still very much a prototype, but what a powerful beast of a prototype! I'll be one of the first in line for one of these sets when it comes out. If you were on the fence about jumping into 5U, it's never been easier. Start with a Box4 or Box11 and get that QPS6+ power supply and start adding modules."

5U - FM Drone

video by Precarious333 Music

"Testing out some modules (outside the case). Patch is an ElectroSmith VCO with linear FM from Q106A sine which is sequenced by a SympleSEQ. Saw out from ElectroSmith to Barton BMC034 Switched Resistor VCF (built by Lower West Side Studio) running 2 low pass filters in series. Barton BMC034 is modulated by Encore Universal Event Generator running through the inverter on Q155 with inversion modulated by an audio frequency signal from SSL 1710 5-PULSER which is processing the same Q106A FM-ing the ElectroSmith VCO, introducing a pitch heard as the accented notes. The inverter output is then fed to the Curver section of Q155 modulated by a second Encore UEG. Simple, right? Ha-ha!

Q155 Curver is a really great module. Works great to add uniqueness to modulation signals and audio alike. I'm sure I'll find a place for it in every patch.

A minute into the video I introduce an inverted copy of the sequence controlling Q106A into the Clock input on the Barton BMC034. This is an experimental input on a very strange filter producing unexpected results. In this instance we get a sweet spot that produces truncated versions of the sequence because the filter freaks out creating dead zones. I like that kind of thing. \ (•◡•) /

Things fall into chaos when I exponentially FM the ElectroSmith VCO by another VCO running a different sequence which degenerates into the noise at the end.

Synthesizers.com Q165 Prototype Module Overview

synthesizersdotcom

"Check out what's included with our new Q165 Prototype Module Kit. Available for order here: https://shop.synthesizers.com/collect..."

The Q165 Prototype module gives the electronics experimenter a convenient way to implement custom circuitry for their 5U Moog-panel-format synthesizer.

The panel provides placement for knobs, jacks, switches and LEDs. White blocks provide space to write labels using a fine-point ink marker.

The prototype board provides center and side power rails, and enough space for 4-6 integrated circuits - typically op-amps. The pad-per-hole array accepts most common thru-hole components and is arranged like a typical proto board and solderless breadboard, but with additional holes on the sides to accept MTA connectors. The power entry section is laid out for +15V and -15V entry filters along with +5V for digital circuits.

A variety of parts are provided in the kit including PCB mounting spacers, MTA connectors for power, jacks and pots, along with a variety of common resistors, capacitors, transistors and diodes. Op-amp and an OTA ICs are also provided.

The user must supply the circuit design, tools, additional electronic components, and of course the skills.

The Q165 module accepts a standardized Synthesizers.com 6-pin MTA power connection.

New Synthesizers.com Q156 Comparator Module

Published on Mar 19, 2020 synthesizersdotcom

via synthesizers.com

"The Q156 module combines a signal comparator, LFO, VCA and AC Mixer/Coupler in a single-wide module.
The Comparator section compares two signals and produces a gate output when the + signal is higher than the - signal. A single signal can also be compared to a fixed voltage set by the knob. Produce random gates, pulsing gates, convert audio into gates, create effects that apply to only a certain range of notes, and so much more.
The second section is an AC coupler and mixer. Remove DC voltage from a signal, convert gates from the comparator section or from the Q173 Gate Math module into audio, and mix signals.

The third section is a general purpose utility LFO. Triangle and square wave outputs are available. Patch the triangle wave into the comparator section to create PWM.

The bottom section is a simple VCA. Patch the LFO into the VCA to create tremolo, or use an envelope to create decaying vibrato - the possibilities are endless.

New Synthesizers.com Q158 VCA2++ Dual VCA

Published on Dec 2, 2019 synthesizersdotcom

"Hosted by Roger Arrick of Synthesizers.com"

via Synthesizers.com

"The Q158 VCA++ module combines two VCAs along with innovative connectivity to provide a panner, fader, 3-channel mixer and ring modulator functions - all in a single-wide module.

You can never have enough VCAs in a modular system and the Q158 addresses this by providing two full-featured VCAs complete with invertable attenuators and bipolar gain controls.

The signal input and CV input for VCA #1 are normalized to VCA #2, in other words, they are automatically connected to VCA #2 unless plugs are inserted into VCA #2 jacks. This makes patching easy to create a 2-channel panner (one input panning between two outputs) and a fader (two inputs fading to one output).

Automatic connection between the two VCA channels also provides an easy way to do ring modulation (4-quadrant multiplier). Multiplying 2 audio signals produces frequencies that are the sum and differences of the originals resulting in inharmonic bell-like tones, a classic synthesizer function.

VCA channels #1 and #2 are mixed together along with a third un-attenuated channel in the center section. This gives you a 3-channel mixer with 2 of the channels having attenuators. The INVERT switch inverts the polarity of VCA #2's contribution to the mixer and is used to produce ring modulation.

Both VCAs have manual gain controls and VCA #2's invert switch provides simple signal processing functions."

Synthesizers.com Introduces the Q155 Curver, VC Inverter, Slope Detector, VCA

Published on Jul 23, 2019 synthesizersdotcom

via Synthesizers.com

"The Q155 provides a collection of four useful and experimental processing functions to manipulate control voltages and audio, all packaged in a single-wide module.

The Curver section bends signals into new shapes providing new modulation possibilities and changes harmonics in audio waveforms. Curve a triangle wave into a smooth sine or a peaky wave with high-frequency harmonics. Convert standard envelope attacks into a linear shape and bend pitch voltages into obscurity. Signal curving can be performed manually with the knob or via control voltage. The control voltage input has a built-in inverting attenuator.

The Inverter section provides control of a signal's polarity via voltage control. This works with audio and control to mangle sounds and sequences in surprising and unexpected ways.

The Slope Detector section produces a digital output indicating the slope of a waveform. When the waveform is rising the output is positive, when falling the output is zero. What you do with that output is up to you - control a filter, trigger one envelope from another, control LFO modulation, etc.

The bottom section of the Q155 is a simple and useful VCA to control the amplitude of a signal under voltage control. When CV=0 volts the output is off, when CV=5 volts the output is full on. Like patch cables, you can never have enough VCAs.

$206.00 Special Pre-Order Price: $185.00 USD

PJ Wrote: The curver section sort of acts like a filter and I'm enjoying the metallic sounds coming out of the VC inverter. Haven't figured out the slope detector yet. I need more VCAs!!"
