Etsy Closes a Synth DIY Shop

According to Brendan Byrne, Etsy has closed his boutique synth DIY shop. The gist of it sounds like they are questioning how much of his work was made by him. It's an interesting question. Where do you draw the line?  You'll find the full story on Brendan Byrne's website here (warning for those with NSFW rules: the site's uses the f-word in the title).  You can still find Brendan's profile on Etsy here.  Brendan has also been featured a number of times here on MATRIXSYNTH.

"I’ve managed a shop on Etsy for the past 5 months selling electronic devices and synthesizers. I recently resigned from my job to pursue electronics design and fabrication.

Two days ago, my shop was unexpectedly CLOSED and I received an email stating that there was suspicion that I hadn’t constructed my devices by hand. At first I was a bit flattered and followed their instructions to confirm that I had in fact built them myself. I supplied the following photographs…
Shots of my workshop (soldering iron, electronic component cabinets, work bench)
Photos of the device (outside, inside, and the laser etched logo on the back with my etsy shop html link)
Photo of the raw materials used to construct the device (walnut and basswood)
However, they also requested I supply photos of the build process. I didn’t take photos during construction so I didn’t have any. Then I realized this was a more disconcerting request when I noticed NOWHERE in Etsy’s Terms of Use or Do’s and Dont’s page does it say anything like…"

Yamaha PSS-680 FM synth, with multi-fx mod, PART 1: Item description.
Published on May 13, 2013

Update via Glen on Facebook: "My PSS-480 was my first synth in 1989, I still have and use it. The PSS-x80 series all have the same multi waveform 2op FM synth engine at their heart. The 480 and 580 are identical other than colour and patch changes, as are the 680 and 780. The only true differences between the 4/580 and the 6/780 are the extra sampled drum sounds, the drum pads, the pitch bend wheel, and different rhythm presets. Although the programming is simple (yet surprisingly versatile) on the synth itself, via sysex the x80 series have a surprisingly well specified synth engine with key scaling and multi stage envelopes amongst other things. You can download an old Windows editor from here... http://members.chello.at/~bobby100/ (go to the downloads section) As I say though, even with all my other better specified and more modern gear, I still use mine. Although it's kinda cheesy and dry sounding on its own, when run through a couple of basic effects it can sound fantastic. It's particularly good fun when played via my Andromeda (via MIDI) but with the audio from the PSS passing back through the Andy to make use of the filters and effects. It seems to excel at bass and pad sounds, although some cracking leads can also be found too."

"Rare MusiConics BassMate analog bass synth pedals. This is the 1st version of these (later ones were blue and call BassMate II). All in good working order. All buttons and pedals work as do the LED indicator lights. Has a total of 6 switches as seen in photos. Been in climate controlled storage for a number of years so its a bit dusty but again works good..."

See the Musiconics label for a video of the blue version.

Set so far (wip)

"Not finished but been wanting to put another vid up, so here is a jam with what I have so far.

A couple of cock-ups but nothing I can't work on. Some of the later transitions need a bit of work and I have a lot more I can do with the Octatrack which is barely being used other than as a fancy mixer at this stage.

Also my camera is crap, it really wasn't that dark in there.

Loving the sounds that I am getting out of the monomachine, it is an awesome machine."

Synthesis and Sound Design Course

Published on Apr 30, 2013 DJ Vespers·178 videos

"Synthesis & Sound Design Masterclass is a monster course spanning close to 50 videos with over 22 hours of total training. It will take you from a novice or even moderately accomplished synthesist to the next level, and then to the one beyond that. We'll take a cross platform approach to sound design, looking at techniques and tips that are common to many instruments, allowing you to get the most out of what you already have.

This course is jammed full of practical knowledge, explantations, and concise breakdowns of why things work the way they do. Divided into two styles of video, each synthesis concept is explained in a "theory" video and then shown in action, in a series of "practical" videos where you get to watch a detailed construction of a high quality synth sound.

These sounds are both cutting edge and classic, and are all hand crafted by Myagi on screen to give you an up-close view of each concept in action.

moog mg1 3 oscillator vintage analogue analog synthesizer

Published on May 14, 2013 orangecoals·28 videos

"A very fat synth !! the 3 rd oscillator really opens up some extra sound possibilities"

The MG1 is a two oscillator synth. I'm guessing this one has a 3rd oscillator mod.

Update via caleb in the comments: "Well, the polyphonic section can be counted as a 3rd oscillator, no mod needed."

Update 5/20: this one is currently listed here.
