Keyboard Mag. July '98 | What Was In It?

Espen Kraft

"Madonnas album 'Ray of Light' is an awesome album and back in the late 90s when it was released I listened a lot to it because I loved the somewhat groundbreaking work done by William Orbit on it. In terms of filtering and chopped up vocal effects.

Internet was still pretty new back then and magazines were often how we gained intel on how major productions were made. This is the magazine that made me aware of the ADR PanScan (as Orbit explains inside how he used it on Madonnas vocals) I will show you very soon.

By 1998, sample libraries were starting to take of more and more and the Gigasampler had been launched. To have a major sampler in a plugin form was so awesome after years of having to buy big, expensive bricks of electronics to get some long samples going."

Sonicware Liven first impression using the looper

"This is literally my first hour playing with this Sonicware Liven 8 Bit Warps. Just experimenting. I’m just learning how to design sounds and layer tracks using the looper. All the sounds are from the Liven including the drums."

"A groovebox with a DX7 engine that includes a filter and lots of knobs! A conveniently portable machine with digital FM synthesis and a variety of excellent drum sounds. Plug in a midi keyboard and this thing is a DX lovers dream! This piece of gear comes with the power supply and the original manual. Data knob is prone to jitter when switching patterns. What I've done is use electrical contact cleaner when it acts up and its good as new. Everything else works perfectly."

3 custom knobs.

"This piece of gear is truly one of the coolest "one man band" machines ever created! Wayy ahead of its time. The main control box is in excellent shape ,as is the volume pedal .* Also included are the stands. The Bass pedals are from an older unit which has the steel inserts preventing from pedals from breaking. All the major main keys work perfectly ,but some of the sharp note pedals need cleaning -as I never used them. This item will pay for itself for the price im asking ,after 3 jobs playing out I am retiring and no longer have a use for it .this is a steal for the asking price .thanks for looking !"

After Later Audio Popple // Stereo Eurorack Filter - demo & LOTS of patch tips

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the new stereo Eurorack filter ‘Popple’ from Seattle based After Later Audio. It’s a stereo filter design based on the Mutable Instruments Ripples v1 circuit. You have stereo inputs and then stereo outputs for band pass, 2 pole low pass and 4 pole low pass. Stereo cut off, and resonant controls as well as CV inputs are present plus the addition of attenuverters to fit the cut off frequencies on the left and right sides and there’s addition left and right FM inputs to modulate the two sides of the stereo filter independently. As always I’ve tried to cram plenty of patch tips into the video so I hope you gain some ideas and patch tips for your own systems."

TIMING INDEX // SECTIONS
00:00 Hello & patch previews
01:13 Popple feature run down
02:12 Raw filter sweeps demo
03:36 Dual mono filtering
05:11 Filtering stereo beats with ducking, auto wah and audio rate modulations
07:22 Vocal & formant like tones with audio rate modulation
08:51 FM synthesis with dual oscillating sines
10:20 Percussion synthesis (kicks and FM overtones)
11:56 Quick tips for mono to stereo patching
12:56 Dual LFO oscillations & sub audio wobbles
14:10 Filter pings
15:14 Stereo feedback turning sine waves into saw waves
17:03 Dual slew limiter and resonant LFOs

"Popple is an 8hp multimode stereo filter based on the Mutable Instruments Ripples V1 filter section. Popple maintains the buttery smoothness of Ripples filter while giving you two separate audio paths. The audio paths share a resonance, control, a frequency cutoff control, resonance CV input, and a v/oct cutoff CV input. Each channel then has its own cutoff CV input with attenuverters (which are normalled to a 2.5V signal).

Popple will also self-oscillate at high resonance settings, when coupled with the v/oct CV control. Popple can act as a dual sine wave oscialltor as well.

Presale notes

We are running a presale right now. Modules will ship on Oct 7th. All source files will be released on our Github on Oct 7th."
