Tacoma Noise Rodeo - June 29 Featuring John L Rice, cathartech & Underground Clouds

For those in the Pacific Northwest, the Tacoma Noise Rodeo will be hosting a few performances Thursday June 29. I pinged John L Rice and he will be performing with his eurorack modular which was featured at the MMTA Summer SYNTHFEST (see this video and the MMTA SYNTHFEST 2012 label for some pics. Note he wont be bringing his 5U system, but if you are in the area this is a good opportunity to check out modular gear live. Details:

cathartech
John L Rice
Underground Clouds

Esoteric electronic music has always had a hard time finding a place and a time.
Tacoma Noise Rodeo exists because there is no outlet for in Tacoma for those who make music that tends towards the experimental. The idea behind the noise rodeo is to locate this venue. Each of the artists was selected because of their vision of what music should be.
That place is Metronome Coffee, 3518 6th Ave., Tacoma, WA 98406
The time is Friday June 29th 8pm.
The price? Free

John L Rice - Percussionist and synthesist John L Rice has had such a long and inconsequential pursuit
of musical endeavors it's difficult to adequately describe it all in just a blurb. Maybe a blob,
but not a blurb. Expect to experience order in his chaos and chaos in his order. Especially
expect to be disappointed so you'll walk away thinking "Well, that wasn't so bad." ;-)

cathartech - Cathartech is aj lindner, a long-time noise and drone purveyor and former curator of Seattle's No Tomorrow experimental music series. His current focus is on parapsychological techniques within a sound and performance context, weaving various forms of media and entrainment procedures to create altered states of awareness in the listener/viewer.

Underground Clouds - When not honing his incredibly low bowling score, underground clouds enjoys Asian food and hanging out in the basement. He is the CEO of a major corporation that turns cat fur into renewable energy. Sometimes he does beats and sometimes noise"

The function of the fog is to play with our conditioned perceptions inside of the uncallable unnamed music (avoiding strong stereotypes): does it?

Echophon: VC no-input mixing from Pete Shambler on Vimeo.

Using an Echophon, Dr. Octature and Noisering to create a voltage-controlled feedback system similar to a no-input mixing channel.

Doc Oc is patched into the Echophon's external feedback loop. The Noisering's 1 and 2 outs are patched to the 1v/oct* and Q CV ins on the Octature. A high enough resonance will cause the filter to oscillate. The recirculating echos give the whole thing a nice ghostly quality.

This is a handy patch to have on hand if you ever find yourself having to do background music for a late night, Creature Feature type show on public access.

COMPLETE Dubreq PianoMate

via this auction

"Made in the 1970s in England by Dubreq, who also made the Stylophone, it's an add-on sound expander for a piano or any type of keyboard instrument.
The system consists of a small amplifier with built-in tone generators, a swell / volume pedal, and two sensor bars that just sit on the keyboard of a piano or similar instrument. Nothing actually gets attached to the piano, gravity hold the sensors in place. When the piano key is struck, the sensor touching that key drops down and the tone generator is triggered.

It sounds a lot like a Farfisa organ, and the amp gets pretty loud but you probably can't gig with it. This is more of a curiosity than a real professional instrument, but it is very cool if you're into kitschy and funky keyboard gear"

"According to the Workshop's site: 'in 2012 as part of thespace.org, an innovative new digital arts media service created in joint partnership between the BBC and the arts council the radiophonic workshop is being reborn'.

It continues: 'Instead of being confined to rooms full of equipment in Maida Vale studios in London, the new Radiophonic Workshop will instead be a virtual institution, visibly manifested as an online portal and forum for discussion around the challenges of creating new sounds in a world saturated in innovative music technology but lacklustre in terms of actual original output. We will primarily bring together two key disciplines: music composition and software design, and as such its members will be drawn from the cutting edge of both.'"

Note the video above is linked in the auction for demo purposes only. It is not the actual MPC SN 3314 listed.

"MPC electronics was only in business for a few years and they only made this piece (and a few companion pieces for "THE KIT") as well as a larger programmable version of "THE KIT". They were a UK based company, I suppose they just couldn't keep up with the advancements of other companies such as Roland, Korg, Linn etc. In the end less than 5,000 of the were ever made, that's even less than the TB-303!

I have been told "THE KIT" was released as an attempt to compete with the TR-606 of sorts. But what "THE KIT" is missing in programmability, it almost makes up for in sound quality and performance functionality.

"THE KIT" has a number of features you won't see on a TR-606, some you do... I will detail them below:

- THE KIT has 7 piezo drum pads that allow you to play the kit.
- Ride Cymbal can be tuned from a knob on the pieces front. (see pics below)
- Each drum part has it's own 1/4 inch mono output. (see pics below)
- There are 11 Trim pots on the pieces back the allow you to control different aspects of the machine. Such as: Cymbal Pitch / Decay, Snare Noise, Drum Decay and Pad Sensitivity.
- CV Inputs for the Bass, Snare and Hit Hat (i'm pretty sure, might be a tom also)
- Pre-programmed hi-hat section, 6 different beats w/ 4/4, 3/4 and 4 on the floor, 8th note and disco shuffle. GREAT HI-HAT SOUND!
- The pre-programmed hi-hat section can send CV OUTPUT to another piece via the 1/4inch output
- Individual volume controls for each drum parts
- Foot switch on / off
- 9v 1/8 inch power jack input (adapter NOT included) as well as 9v battery.

Dekatron "pulse" generator

YouTube Published on Jun 23, 2012 by MrPalebluedot

"Experimenting with a dekatron spinner circuit as a pulser or trigger generator thing for my modular synthesizer. It has a switch for high and low range and a pot for speed. I plan to add a voltage control input(s).

The output is a grouping of 3 "pulses". The first part of the video, the dekatron is used to open a tube VCA with a fixed tone going into the VCA. The later part of the video is the sound of the dekatron its self. It's very unique, it puts out a noise type of sound for each cathode stage and then the tripple-pulse tone per decade"
