ALM003 - SID GUTS

ALM003 - SID GUTS from ALM on Vimeo.

"Basic feature demo of ALM003 - 'SID GUTS': A Eurorack synth module based around the C64 audio chip aka the 'SID'.

via ALM

"The MOS Technology 6581/8580 ‘Sound Interface Device’ chip, aka the ‘SID’, was the sound generator chip used in the Commodore 64 home computer – the greatest selling home computer of all time. The SID, by the means of 3 wavetable oscillators, a real analogue multi mode filter, an ADSR and various cross modulation options, provided the soundtrack to a generations gaming and perhaps many peoples first exposure to real sound synthesis. The SID’s unique musical aesthetic has lasted well beyond the lifetime of the C64 re-imagined in standalone products such as the SID Station and with in the computer via sophisticated software emulation.

The SID GUTS now takes the legendary SID chip and tailors it into the eurorack modular environment. By use of a real SID chip the classic sound is taken in a new direction with the levels of direct and voltage control only a modular system can offer.

The SID GUTS provides a single ‘SID Voice’ to your modular. The charm and authenticity of the original sound is preserved with no attempt to ‘clean’ or reduce noise in the SID audio output.

The SID GUTS supports to following SID chip features via modular control;

1volt per octave control of a ‘core’ SID oscillator 0-5v input (with tunable offset)
Direct and voltage control of oscillator wave shape selection (Pulse, Triangle, Square, Saw).
Filter switchable between 4 modes - 12dB/Octave HP , LP , BP & Notch (HP+LP).
Direct and Voltage control (with offset) of Filter cutoff and Resonance.
1 volt per octave control of second SID ‘modulation’ oscillator.
Direct and voltage control of modulation oscillator ‘type’; ring modulation, sync or none.
Direct and voltage control of pulse wave pulse width.
External audio input.
The SID GUTS does not support the following SID features;

Remaining 3rd oscillator
ADSR
Other features include;

Support for ALL SID chips (6851/8580) & SwinSID chips.
All settings non volatile.
Audio output and input at modular levels.
Designed and built in England."

ALM SID Guts Eurorack Module

via Control Synthesizers and Electronic Devices on Facebook

"☵▒░░░ Another beautifully designed new release by ALM titled SID-GUTS; this one though takes the cake - both in terms of appearance and performance. SID GUTS uses the same SID Chip technology derived from the greatest selling personal computer of all time; the Commodore 64. And implements its core into the Eurorack format seemlessly. Very limtied QTY's available. ░░░▒☵

::::::Of note, these DO NOT come with SID Chips, the user is advised to source there own; we however have a limited supply on hand::::::"

Modular Sessions Vol.2 - Shifting Space

Published on Jul 28, 2014 vcoadsr

"What are the 'Modular Sessions Vol.2'?
The aim is to write, perform and record a new track in a single take using only a Eurorack modular synth (and FX pedals). The key motivation comes from the idea of creating and performing a complete song using a limited set of tools and removing the ubiquitous DAW from the creative process.

'Modular Sessions Vol.2' is available to buy on Bandcamp here:
http://vcoadsr.bandcamp.com/album/modular-sessions-vol-2

And can be streamed on Soundcloud here:
https://soundcloud.com/vcoadsr/sets/modular-sessions-vol-2

Tools used in the making of ‘Shifting Space’ :
12U Eurorack Modular Synth
Eventide Space reverb pedal

Recorded in a single take, no external sequencing, post-production limiting/compression applied only.

Eurorack modular synth patch notes:

This patch is comprised of four elements; drums, baseline, sub-bass line and high register melody line.

All parts in one way or another are being clock by the Tiptop Trigger Riot via ALM’s Pamela’s Workout.
The drums are being directly triggered by the Trigger Riot in particular the Tiptop BD909, 909CP, RS808 and the HATS909, These are then being summed using the Intellijel Unity mixer before being sent to the mixer where some reverb from the Eventide Space deal is added on the send/return loop.

The main baseline synth part starts with the Square wave output from ALM’s SID GUTS module that has it’s pitch modulated by the the Toppobrillo Quantimator in chord mode and using 5ths chord option. The Quantimator is also in ‘Arpeggio function mode’ and is being triggered by ALM’s Pamela’s Workout to give the arpeggiated rhythm. The Quantimator is receiving CV from the Makenoise Rene sequencer in snake mode that is being clocked by Pamela’s workout too. The Square wave from SID GUTS is being sent to a channel on Makenoise QMMG in ‘both’ mode and output to the mixer. The QMMG ‘both’ channel is being struck by an envelope from the Intellijel Quadra module that in turn is being triggered by again Pamela’s workout.

The sub-baseline part comes from multing the square wave output from SIDGUTS into the 4ms RCD and then taking the ‘/2’ output back into another channel of the QMMG in ‘LP’ mode that is being modulated using an envelope from the 4ms PEG that is being clocked by Pamela’s workout. The output is being sent straight tho the mixer with some reverb added from the Eventide Space pedal.

The high register synth part comes from the Makenoise DPO ‘Final’ output that is having its wave shaping modulated by the LFO mode from oscillator 1 in the DPO. The pitch of the ‘Final’ output comes from the pitch CV from the Quantimator being multed into the Expert sleepers ‘Disting’ module in S+H mode. The S+H is then triggered by Pamela’s workout and the output CV is sent to the DPO. The output from the DPO is then sent to another QMMG ‘Both’ channel that is being struck using an envelope from the Makenoise Matths where the ‘Fall’ parameter is being manually opened and closed through out the track. The Maths envelope is being triggered by the Intellijel uStep that in turn is being clocked by Pamela’s workout. The output of this QMMG ‘Both’ channel is then being sent to the Makenoise Echophon that is being clocked by Pamela’s workout. The Echophon is using the ‘Loop 2’ mode with depth fully clock wise and the Pitch knob at 9 ‘o clock. The Echophon output is then being sent to the Makenoise Erbe-verb module where it’s size parameter is being modulated throughout out the track by the 4ms PEG on a slow 2 bar triangle wave to expand and shrink the size of the reverb. The decay parameter is manually modulated through the track to create reverb feedback. The Erbe-verb output is then sent to the mixer.

Finally each drum and synth part is sent to the Eventide Space pedal in varying amounts for reverb (using the ‘30. Ambience’ preset) and the final stereo out is recorded into Ableton as a glorified tape recorder."

Thonk Coming to the Brighton Mini Maker Faire This Weekend

via Thonk.co.uk where you'll find a video for the event.

"I’m exhibiting at Brighton Mini Maker Faire this Saturday (7th September) – Come along!

I’ll have my modular system burbling away to itself, stock for sale and working versions of many of the module kits I’ve sold to date. I’ll also have final prototypes of the ALM SID GUTS Eurorack module, which uses the classic Commodore64 SID sound chip.

It costs £5 to get in for adults, tickets are available on the door but you can avoid queues by booking in advance. Kids under 16 go free.

There are loads of cool music and synth projects, hardware hacking, robots, Raspberry PI, 3D printers, submarines and even crazy bio-tech stuff. As well as just wandering around in an amazed daze, you can take part in practical workshops on the Sunday too. Thonk customers should feel at home!

hexinverter.net ORBITALS step sequencer demo

Published on May 27, 2014 hexinverterDOTnet·26 videos

"Orbitals is a 2x8 or 1x16 step analog sequencer with voltage addressed step select and bipolar voltage output modes. It packs a lot of punch in a very economical package as either a 42HP eurorack modular DIY kit ($279) or fully assembled eurorack module.

Here I demo the module and sequence an ALM/Thonk SID GUTS DIY oscillator and use a Galilean Moons for the VCA/envelope. I also use the upcoming first two Mutant Drums from hexinverter.net: the Mutant Bassdrum and Hihats (demo videos coming shortly!)

More information: http://www.modulargrid.net/e/hexinver...

Purchase a DIY kit in the hex.net shop: http://shop.hexinverter.net/

Find a modular retailer near you to buy a built eurorack module (June/July 2014!)"
