"The MOTM-190 is a dual VCA in a compact 1U format. VCA #1 can also be used as a Ring Modulator.

Voltage Controlled Amplifier #1 - Ring Mod
The top knob (marked BLEND) and switch (marked V and R) control VCA #1. If the switch is in the 'V' position, the circuit is a linear VCA. The BLEND control acts as an Initial Gain control, normalized to unity. If BLEND is all the way to the left (the IN position), the gain is unity ('1') and there is no modulation (the output equals the input). As the BLEND knob is turned clockwise, more and more of the CV modulates the signal. Fully clockwise (the RM position), the CV changes the gain from 0 to 1. This is 'standard' VCA operation.

If the switch is in the 'R' position, the circuit is a Ring Modulator. The BLEND control acts the same way as a Yamaha CS-80: all the way to the left, the output = the input. As BLEND is turned to the 'RM' position, the depth of the Ring Mod effect increases.

The second VCA is switchable between Linear and Exponential responses. The GAIN control sets the initial gain from 0 to 1. The CV MOD control ajusts the depth of AM for the VCA (in normal operation, the GAIN is set to '0' and the CV MOD is set to '10').
Although 'micro' in size, the MOTM-190 is a low-noise, low distortion, high dynamic range (better than 100dB) dual VCA. The Ring Modulator BLEND control is not found on any other modular.

Black knobs are for offsets and audio (AC) attenuators, and Blue Knobs are for cv (DC) attenuators.
(the Red knobs are just added to my m-odule for fun, they are not included in the new knob colour scheme.)

"The theme song from the movie "Halloween" by John Carpenter." The film was released in 1978. John not only wrote and directed the film but he composed the music for it. The following is an image of John Carpenter in the studio from this earlier post.

Be sure to see these posts on John Carpenter. Note that this image is most likely from the Halloween III session. From the earlier post, "the music for the original Halloween movie was recorded at Sound Arts, Los Angeles and featured Moog modular programming by Dan Wyman." Update: A non synth related interesting side note: I was taking a look at John Carpenter's IMDB page and noticed that the full movie The Thing appears to be available for streaming. The Thing was another classic horror film from John Carpenter from 1982. Have a great Halloween folks!

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com plays the DK70 to a background loop done with just a K1200 Kurzweil bass sound and Alesis D4 drums. This unit is fairly rare. Only a few thousand made. It has one SSM2045 VCF and one generator chip that is driven by the SSM2031 HF vco chip. And a TDA1022 BBD for chorus as I recall. Digital envelopes. The DK80 is basically twice the synthesizer except they only use 6 voices on each voice chip! THe DK70 is 8 voice. Not sure why they did that but anyway both units have basically the same sound engine, the DK80 is just bigger and is 'Bi-timbral' so it can layer the two sounds etc. The keytar necks are hard to come by. If anyone has one lying around let me know. I have two more of these I'd like to rig up for somebody. Of course you can play them without the neck just using the pitch wheel instead of the bender and the vibrato button that is on the machine..but you sacrifice the octave shifter and the hold button."
