Analogue Solutions Christmas: Polymath Night (featuring Christine Anderson)

Published on Dec 18, 2013 rezfilter·67 videos

"HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ANALOGUE SOLUTIONS!

Here's some holiday synthpop action featuring the Analogue Solutions' Polymath modular synthesizer (all synth sounds heard in the video) as well as the wildly talented and unforgettable Christine Anderson on vocals!

The track was assembled layer by layer using ONLY the Polymath as the sound source. Each track was recorded separately into Logic Pro. From the percussive analogue sequencer loops to the quirky retro leads: each sound was created specifically for use in the "Polymath Night" song and video.

The reverb heard on the instrumentation is from Polymath's own Spring Reverb. However, some slight delay was added on a couple of tracks for effect.

Christine Anderson offers her one of a kind sound and unique abilities as a vocalist, lyricist and overall creative contributor. Her "magic" touch can be seen and felt throughout the production and her fun-loving spirit brings an overflow of charm and fun to this project! Christine is also a star on the piano and an analogue enthusiast!

The musical bed uses all original Polymath sounds and was produced especially for the holidays by Sound of Science.

Benge Releases All EMS Polysynthi Album - Forms 3

"One of the interesting things about creating an album using just one synthesiser is that it puts you in the 'sonic era' of the machine that you are working with. So for this reason I decided to create these tracks with this idea in mind, resulting hopefully in a sound reminiscent of the musical cues found on certain late 1970s soundtrack or library albums. Therefore when listening to this record it would not be inappropriate to try and imagine yourself immersed in a progressive Television Play such as would have been broadcast on on a sunday evening in 1978

This record was made using the EMS Polysynthi electronic polyphonic synthesiser. All sounds were created and played on this single machine, and then recorded directly to multi-track tape in overlaying passes. The only exception to this was the minor addition of monophonic spring reverberation via the EMS VCS3 and some occasional band-pass filtering courtesy of the EMS 8-octave filter bank

DiY Filter Shootout

DiY Filter Shootout from Quijote Cinemusica on Vimeo.

"Finally got the Yusynth EMS style diode ladder filter to work. Decided to do a test with all 4 filters in my current modular setup:
1 - Yusynth Moog Transistor Ladder
2 - Yusynth ARP filter
3 - CGS Steiner Parker filter (lowpass input used)
4 - Yusynth EMS style diode ladder filter

All of them set to close to self oscillation.

Arp and Moog sound very similar to me. The Parker is harsher with less low end (but is state variable) , and the EMS is the most unique sounding I think, and has CV control for resonance. Very happy with all of them :)"

This just scratches the surface of the box's operation, as it has a host of MIDI control and other routing/control features. Bare with me, I'm a bit rusty..."

Chaka Khan - I Feel For You Moog bass along

"All credits goes to Geeljasjes who unfortunately closed his channel.

His comment for this song:

Coolest period in Funk music for me was from 1981 to 1986.
This track is one of my faves from 84.

I Feel For You had been recorded twice before, but this is the coolest version. It's extremely over-produced, so it took me a while to get the same sort of result.

The machine drums at the start, which keeps on running throughout the whole track, was originally done using a DMX, Linn and TR808. All these can now perfectly be recreated inside Reel Machines by XLN-Audio.
I wasn't really pleased with Reel Machines initially, but having given it a second chance it's rather convincing and pleasant to work with.
After the rap intro Addictive Drums kick in, to put another layer of drums ontop and to give it a live feel.
My aim is always to find the middle between the original recording and a live feel.

I could have left Melle Mel's rap out, unless I had the original isolated track, but no one has that luxury, so I did it myself.
Only then I realized how difficult that rap was. Not having an American accent and of course Melle's deeper voice makes it somewhat sound silly, but it's effective enough (I hope?).

A lot of Prophet-5 and Jupiter-8 was used, especially all the brass sounds.
The harmonica was another difficult thing to replicate.
I used a sample from my Korg TR-Rack.
The Minimoog is completely unprocessed.
Enjoy!"

And the original: no synth spotting, but there's plenty of parachute pants spotting.

Harvestman - Voltage Apparitions

Harvestman - Voltage Apparitions from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

"I recently borrowed Scott Jaeger's 6U harvestman case after our last trash audio synth meet. This patch is an experiment using some of his latest modules, Tyme Safari mark II, Zorlon Cannon Mark II, Hertz Donut Mark II, Piston Honda Mark II, Stillson Hammer, Bionic Lester, Double Andore and Polivoks VCF. The only other modules used where the MakeNoise Pressure Points, stg soundlabs .mix and Synthwerks FSR-4 Quad force sensing resistor module. The idea was to try and create a patch that utilized all of the modules in one performance. No sequencing of any kind just a play on textures and timbres using my hands. The only external effects used in this patch where the Eventide space and Strymon blue sky pedal. The Zorlon Cannon provided fluttering gates into the Double Andore trigger inputs. Top mix output on the Zorlon Cannon ran into the "B" input on the Bionic lester. For the low to high low bit bursts of noise filtered in band pass mode, with moderate gain input setting. Multiple sputtering gate outputs from the "A" outs section running into the "A Sound of Thunder" input sections triggering on and off the bend and format effects at different intervals to create complex digital clustering. Then taking the output of the "Tyme Sefari mark II" into the "A" input on the Bionic lester, creating the repeating glitching stutters scattered through out the performance. The Hertz Donut output is running into left side on the Double Andore, then CV controlled by the left side envelope output. Right side output from Double Andore going into the Piston Honda CV input then running both signals out the summed output. Combination CV outputs going into the Double Andore from the synthwerks top outputs. Drone pitches created via the pressure points tuned voyaged output top row yellow cable. There is also some gate and pressure outputs running into piston honda and time safari CV input. Double Andore right side output into the the Polivoks filter, filtering the wavemorphing of the Piston Honda. All inputs running into an STG soundlbabs .mix. Entire mix running through a Eventide space "custom preset". Hertz Donut output running into the Strymon "bluesky" reverb pedal in shimmer mode then back into channel 1 on the sty sound labs .mix.

"The 266e Source of Uncertainty provides a general source of musical unpredictability. Operation is divided into four sections, each of which perform a unique function.
Three type of noise are available, with corresponding dedicated outputs. White noise is electrically flat, but acoustically balanced toward the high end of the spectrum (+3 db/octave). Integrated white noise has a low spectral bias (-3 db/octave). Musically flat noise has a flat spectrum (constant energy per octave) and is a particularly useful source for subsequent processing.

Fluctuating Random Voltages are continuously variable, with voltage control of bandwidth over the range of .05Hz to 50Hz, making possible changes that vary from barely perceptible movement to rapid fluctuation.

Quantized Random Voltages change upon receiving pulses. The number of states is voltage-controllable from two to 24, and their distribution can be varied both spatially and temporally.

Stored Random Voltages have three parameters under voltage control. Degree varies the amount of randomness; Chaos alters the distribution from just a little uncertain to total chaos; Skew biases the randomness toward one extreme or the other."

"The 250e Arbitrary Function Generator features 16 stages, each of which offers direct and immediate access to control and timing voltages.

Each stage stores the values of two control voltages, which are set using an array of 16 potentiometers. Time values are adjusted with a parallel array of smaller potentiometers, which can also provide a third control voltage. Control voltages and times may be interpolated, quantized, or replaced with externally applied voltages for the selected stages.

Stages may be stepped through (advanced) via the internal clock, externally applied pulses, or via MIDI clock; variable subdivisions are supported.

Two programmable pulse outputs are included, as well as a facility for voltage control of stage position. Loop counters are associated with each stage; loops can be nested to any level.

The current stage number is indicated by a circular array of orange LEDs; edit position is indicated with blue LEDs. Editing can be performed while the sequencer is running.

250e settings can be stored and recalled using the 225e or 206e Preset Manager..."

Update 2: the official press release:

"DSI develops powerful Prophet 12 module from flagship Prophet 12 keyboard

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA: Premier polyphonic synthesizer manufacturer Dave Smith Instruments is proud to announce the Prophet 12 module — a space-saving tabletop and rack-ready reworking of its recently released Prophet 12 keyboard, the twelve-voice hybrid digital/ analog synthesizer that company founder and renowned designer Dave Smith duly declared his “best synth yet.”

“We have had many requests from professional musicians for a small, easily portable version of the Prophet 12 keyboard, with all the same features and incredible sound,” says Smith. “The new Prophet 12 module is just that: it has all the power of the Prophet 12 keyboard — in fact, it has the exact same voice board — and it fits into a backpack.”

All those powerful Prophet 12 module parameters are easily editable via a well-thought-through front panel perfectly fit for purpose. “People like small these days,” declares its astute architect. “Many musicians also have more than enough keyboards, or simply don’t use keyboards. The Prophet 12 module offers a sleek design that still gives you easy and incredibly fast and intuitive control over all parameters.”

Just like its Prophet 12 keyboard counterpart, the twelve-voice hybrid digital/analog Prophet 12 module not only boasts the greatest number of voices of any instrument from the distinguished designer to date, but each of those voices features four OSCILLATORS capable of generating classic and complex waveforms, a sub-oscillator (Sub Octave), analog resonant LOW-PASS FILTER and analog HIGH-PASS FILTER, and analog VOLTAGE CONTROLLED AMPLIFIER. Additional features include a tuned FEEDBACK path, a four-tap stereo DELAY per voice, expanded ARPEGGIATOR functionality, deep MODULATION capabilities, bi-timbral operation, and much more besides. The CHARACTER section adds a variety of out of the ordinary wave-shaping and sound-sculpting options like Girth (low shelf filtering that boosts low frequencies, with some extra harmonic modification at higher settings), Air (high shelf filtering that boosts high frequencies, with some extra harmonic modification at higher settings), Hack (reduces the bit depth of the mixed output from the oscillators), Decimation (reduces the sample rate of the mixed output from the oscillators), and Drive (emulates tape saturation).

Despite its comparatively diminutive dimensions, the back panel I/O of the Prophet 12 module matches that of the Prophet 12 keyboard in almost all aspects — apart from featuring an external power supply in the interests of making it as compact and portable as possible. Headphones, Main/A Outputs, B Outputs, MIDI Thru, MIDI Out, MIDI In, Pedal 1, Pedal 2, Sustain, and USB connectivity are all present and accounted for, making musical communication with the outside world a breeze.

Be prepared to be blown away by the Prophet 12 module. It won’t break backpacks, but packs more than enough power into its easily carried form factor to meet the needs of modern music makers and savvy sound designers — wherever they take it.

The Prophet 12 module has an MAP of $2,199.00 USD and can be purchased from any authorized Dave Smith Instruments dealer."

Rob Papen PunchBD RE Introduction

Published on Dec 18, 2013 Rob Papen·37 videos

"PunchBD-RE is a versatile and easy to use bass drum synthesizer for your Reason Rack. With PunchBD-RE you get two modelled synthesizer drum modules, a click/noise module and a sample module to help you shape the main beat for your productions. From Dance and electronic and Hip-Hop to soundtrack. PunchBD-RE has it covered."

Update: the official press release:

"Rob Papen provides perfect kicks for Reason with PunchBD-RE

ECHT, THE NETHERLANDS: virtual instrument and effects plug-in developer Rob Papen Soundware is proud to announce availability of PunchBD-RE, a versatile and easy-to-use bass drum synthesizer Rack Extension for Propellerhead Reason 6.5 (or higher), as of December 19...

When Swedish music software application, interfaces, and technology standards specialist Propellerhead Software first unveiled its revolutionary Rack Extension — an ever-expandable, freely-routable rack of instruments, effects, and sounds — for its well-received Reason music-making and recording studio software solution, namesake company founder and synthesizer developer Rob Papen promptly pronounced it as being “...a brilliant concept.” Continuing, he then summarised its advantages as follows: “What we face as a developer is having to have a PC version and a Mac version, and if you run them in your regular host, you can crash your host. That’s a real, big battle. People, if they use Reason, learn that things are connected. It’s cross-platform; everything works. It’s a major leap forward for Reason, and productions coming out of Reason will sound totally different. Reason remains Reason, but, now, it’s open.”

Open to the likes of Rob Papen to develop distinctive and desirable third-party Rack Extensions for Reason. Little wonder, then, that Rob Papen was amongst the first to do just that, starting by porting over its popular, ‘phat’-sounding soft synth Predator as Predator-RE, rapidly followed by its SubBoomBass-RE dedicated virtual bass synth and self-explanatory PR-Verb RE and PR-Distort RE virtual effects.

Now, with the timely introduction of PunchBD-RE, Rob Papen’s persuasive Rack Extension offerings are more enticing than ever before. Based upon its award-winning Punch drum synthesis/sampler software instrument’s kick-ass bass drum module, the Rack Extension version features the same high-quality algorithms attributed to Punch’s punchy sound. Saying that, other ‘models’ from Punch have been cleverly combined so users can stack them together to create hitherto unheard bass drum sounds. Take the SAMPLE module (including various samples, plus Rob Papen Library samples) and mix in a synth bass drum module, for example... what a beautiful combination!

Better still, there are actually two synth bass drum modules within PunchBD-RE: MODEL 1 and MODEL 2 are already positively powerful in their own right, but an additional CLICK/NOISE module is also available to add clicks (based on a sinus waveform) or noise. Using pink noise, this can create an awesome room sound! Stereo room/noise effects can be easily added to the bass drum sound using the SPREAD and OFFSET controls.

Similarly, the SAMPLE module not only includes sample-based bass drums, but bristles with an assortment of creative controls helpfully broken down into more manageable sections — TUNING, FILTER ENV, AMP ENV, FILTER, STEREO SWAP, and more — to help modify those samples.

All of those superlative sound sources are blended together in the MIXER, though they can first be sent to the dedicated DISTORTION module where 19 different distortion algorithms are available to treat them as appropriate. Moreover, modulation options are well catered for, courtesy of a free ENVELOPE, LFO, and all-embracing modulation matrix. Also, an analogue-modelled FILTER can capably change whatever composite sound is being routed from the MIXER.

It’s also worth noting that PunchBD-RE can play at a fixed pitch or ‘tuned’ over the complete keyboard range — a useful feature for many modern-day music stylings.

Finally, ‘flipping’ the PunchBD-RE Rack Extension around reveals a back panel packed with CV inputs and gate trigger options, separate audio outputs, and all manner of other connections for creative connectivity. Cable those kick-ass bass drum sounds to wherever you want to take them, routing-wise... within Reason! Reasons Rob Papen, positively: “I’m totally amazed that it all works.” We’re sure you will be, too!

PunchBD-RE can be purchased and directly downloaded for an introductory discounted price of €39.00 EUR/$49.00 USD (rising to €49.00 EUR/$59.00 USD on January 1, 2014) from the Propellerhead Shop here: https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/punchbdre-instrument/ (Propellerhead operates a try-before-you-buy service for those wishing to test Rack Extensions.)"
