The VX-323 Robotiques

The new album Robotiques, a concept album by a robot named The VX-323, is now available. You'll find the full details here.

"Welcome! I am The VX-323, serial number 07EC13-08, formerly a factory robot but now I am an electronic recording artist. I hope you enjoy my style of robo-pop!"

Below is track 6 off the release, titled 'Pets' (a song about The VX-323's pet which happen to be human), followed by the second track, 'Euro Star'.

"This is a very personal song to me. Humans have very long lifespans, but they can meet all sorts of bad fates if they escape. Always keep your human on a leash!"

"Stripped-down electronica track from my new disc, Robotiques."

P.S.: Big thanks to the VX-323 for supporting MATRIXSYNTH!

Wavemakers - Documentary on the Ondes Martenot

"Wavemakers pursues the legacy of an electronic musical instrument as fragile as it is magical: the Ondes Martenot. The Martenot so sensitive, so expressive, that nearly a century after its invention, musicians, artisans and scientists are still trying to unravel its secrets. Among them are the inventor’s son, Jean-Louis Martenot, Suzanne Binet-Audet, the 'Jimi Hendrix of the Martenot', and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.

Integrating vérité, never-before-seen archival material and an entrancing soundtrack, this feature documentary explores the origins and workings of the Martenot, and draws us inexorably into its spell. A modern-day story set against a historical background, Wavemakers is a journey into the very heart of the mystery of music.

With Wavemakers, Caroline Martel returns with the signature approach that turned her first feature doc about telephone operators into a 'non-stop visual and intellectual stimulation… an enormously creative documentary.' (Variety). She pursues her fascination with culture and technology, using her distinctive blend of humanism, lyricism and experimentation."

"A CHORAL FILM ON THE MYSTERY OF AN INSTRUMENT

Maurice Martenot dreamed of sound springing from silence. Amid the chaos of the Great War, the young French wireless telegraph operator became enthralled by the unusual interference produced by his radio’s vacuum tubes. He envisioned of an instrument that would turn the raw material of electricity into music, while allowing for the complete control of the performer: the Ondes musicales Martenot. Inspired by an ideal of human and live artistic expression, his electronic instrument is of such extraordinary sensitivity that nearly a century after its invention, musicians, artisans and scientists are still trying to unravel its secrets.

With an extremely wide spectrum of timbres able to evoke sounds ranging from the human voice to wind instruments, to the hum of a machine, the Martenot’s expressive capabilities are unequalled by any other electronic instrument. But what became of it? Since its introduction at the Paris Opera in 1928, it has been widely used in both classical and popular repertoires. From the first sound films of Abel Gance and Fritz Lang, to Hollywood classics, science-fiction TV series, and recent productions such as There Will Be Blood, the Martenot has also lent a distinctive colour to the music of Olivier Messiaen, Tristan Murail, Édith Piaf and Radiohead. Yet, while it has been part of the collective unconscious of entire generations, it is practically invisible today. After the accidental death of Maurice Martenot in 1980, the Martenot workshop gradually ceased production, leaving the instrument’s future up in the air. Of the 281 Martenots that were built, only about 70 remain, and the instrument is now threatened with extinction.

With its modern-day plot set against a historical background, Wavemakers pursues the uncompleted dream of the visionary man that was Maurice Martenot (1898–1980). This feature documentary follows an ensemble of Martenot aficionados, in France and Quebec, who search through studios, basements, science labs, and workshops to unravel the secrets of the instrument. Among them is Jean-Louis Martenot, striving to keep his father’s musical and pedagogical legacy alive. Suzanne Binet-Audet, the “Jimi Hendrix of the Martenot,” who meets backstage with Jonny Greenwood. A well-known member of the band Radiohead, Greenwood is a multi-instrumentalist and composer leading a new generation of musicians who are rediscovering the Martenot. Jeanloup Dierstein, an electronic instrument maker in Paris’ 17th arrondissement, is working on a new Martenot prototype, and, like its inventor, “dreams of it day and night.” Dierstein allows us to be the timely witnesses of the rebirth of one of the 20th century’s major musical innovations."

EML ElectroComp 101 Semi Modular Synthesizer with Factory CV/Gate & Manual

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

" Excellent condition Electrocomp 101 with what appears to be a factory mod, original operation manual, copied schematics, and the midi/cv converter in this listing.

Handle has separated at the stitching on ends. Handle is still sturdy and works but I would advise not to use it. Minor edge wear- please see photos

Factory CV/GATE mod allows the included Kenton Pro-Solo to control 4 oscillators in perfect tune, and other cv function via MIDI. Hence, KB1 (and glide) pitch CV is disabled on the 101, to allow external control monophonically.

If used without the Kenton:
The 101's keyboard does work monophonically on osc 3 and 4, scaling perfectly. There are additional keyboard outs added to the panel, and it appears as though when CM3 out is routed back into the CV jack it would control KB1 cv (and of course all successive cv's), but I haven't been able to make this work as scaling is off. (1.2 v/octave may play into this, as perhaps it was scaled to be controlled from a 1v/octave synth). KB2 and all other functions are in working order, working monophonically from its own keybaord.

Once again, when controlled by midi, everything works as you would expect. The knobs added for the mod control pitch coarse and fine, with a switch for LOW FREQ mode. Gate is triggered on both envelopes, or one if you want. Kenton LFO frees up another oscillator. Route to OSCs and or filter CV, etc. This is a powerful combination..
As you may already know, this is a complex instrument and requires some degree of understanding."

MacBeth Elements switched mode!

"This video shows a new parameter that I'm experimenting with on the Elements before its goes of for production- I say experiment- because this switch I've added could be utilized another way! So- what does it do- in this experiment- I have tapped out the very bottom rung of the diode ladder- I wanted to hear what it sounded like compared to the tap out that I did in the MacBeth Mk1 Filter 'A' Module...I certainly like the sound! I'm going to try interpolating 2 different filters shortly!"

Heavy modulation provided by Make Noise Maths and Function as well as Intellijel Dual ADSR. Multimode VCA by WMD was primary VCA's. WMD uHC and Bubblesound SEM20 were primary VCF's. Also tried out the new SubMix6 module to mix the dual SidGuts modules and run submix out feedback loop w/ SEM20 filter. Came out great!"

"the module is in great shape, one rack ear is slightly bent (see photo) & one pot was a little scratchy but I put some deoxit on it and gave it a twiddle and it sorted the issue, I think the scratchy pot was due to lack of use as its been gathering dust in my friends loft. The sticker on the top is easy to remove, I just put it there so the buyer knows what midi channel to select."

Not exactly spectacular, but I thought this was kind of interesting. This is the first time I've seen an iPad listed on eBay this way - more like a synth than iPad.  I'm still using my first gen iPad as a controller for my hardware synths (editor templates and sequencers), although it does play some iOS synths just fine.  I have an iPad Mini Retina for the others.
