New Book on Max Brand - MACHINES FOR THE OPERA. THE COMPOSER MAX BRAND

This one in via Brian Kehew:

"There is a new book on Max Brand, German composer who lived in the USA for a while. He used the Trautonium and, later, was an early Moog synthesizer customer...

It is written bilingually, in English and German"

You can find the German page on the book here, Googlish here.

See the Max Brand label for previous posts if you are not familiar with him.

via the Googlish translation:

"A contemporary of Arnold Schoenberg and Kurt Weill Max Brand was a figure between late romanticism, futurism and outbreaks of the electronic age. The cultural breakdown by the Nazis, before which he fled in 1937 from Vienna and ended up in Rio de Janeiro, began a promising career as an opera composer to an end. In 1940 he settled in New York, where he pursued his vision of an electronic music machine for the stage. Many attempts did not lead on, one of which was an optical synthesizer with self-drawn waveforms, finally Moogtonium, a slightly ajar to the Mixturtrautonium Oskar Salas, Robert A. Moog synthesizer built. The development work on the machine dragged on far too long, so that fire could never realize his dream to have an electronic one-man band for the operatic stage. In 1975 he returned to Austria, where he lived in Langenzersdorf and in 1980 died.

Bad Mopho Jupiter - DSI Mopho SE + Roland JP-08 + PO12. And some Space Echo.

Published on May 22, 2016 Earmonkey Music

"I love Dual Mode in the JP-08. You program up a patch, then put it in Dual mode and layer it against itself. Then, slightly change something on one of the layers, such as Cutoff, LFO rate, etc. You get such a huge sound. Here the JP-08 is playing the bass. I am using the Ensoniq EPS 16+ sequencer for that so I can get a 10 bar loop. I have the Mopho SE running through a Roland RE-301 Space Chorus tape delay and it sound bloody phenomenal. The Teenage Engineering PO12 (made by teenagers in Japan if you ask the dude at Guitar Center that sold it to me) is doing the rhythm. Just a quick little jam because my rules are RECORD AT LEAST SOMETHING EACH WEEK! But I think it came out rather bitchin anyway."

Rheyne - Polymothers (3-voice Moog Mother-32 w/ KMI QuNexus)

Published on May 22, 2016 Rheyne

"A demonstration of how 'Channel Rotation' on a KMI QuNexus can be used to turn multiple mono synths into one polyphonic synth.

With nothing connected to the VC MIX inputs on the Mothers, the VC MIX output and some multiples are controlling all three filters with one knob. The MIDI DIN outputs of an iConnectMIDI4+ are triggering the synths on three MIDI channels. MIDI and audio loops are recorded with Ableton Live. Reverb is also from Ableton.

"Roland Synths (MKS-80 & MKS-30) hooked up to an analog mixer which has a real spring reverb. Each synth unit has a separate programmer. This project took some effort and fasteners. It's all working. No major issues. There is one missing slider button on the MKS-30 Volume Slider. Also one knob on the PG-200 controller (lfo time) needs to be reseated from the inside. Used plastic washers and brass hardware to keep the ears in good shape. The case itself can be pressurized and used for air travel. All the manuals are there with the schematics..."

"The Electronic Music Works WCS-1 Wave Composition Analog Synthesizer is a MIDI synthesizer module based around a digital oscillator, followed by all discrete analog circuits. According to EMM, the WCS-1 is designed to create ‘unusual and very fat sounds’.

The digital oscillator can produce a variety of waves, using individual wave shapes or combining multiple wave shapes to create complex wave shapes.

The WCS-1 is designed to be used with a MIDI controller, sequencer or other device that provides MIDI out and has a standard 1/4″ mono jack output to connect to mixer or audio interface."

Eowave Ribbon hybrid expressive control demo

Published on May 22, 2016 UncertainMusicCorps

"A little demo and exercise for myself to help decide if a Roli Seaboard controller would be a good investment.

In this video I'm using both the midi and CV outputs from my Eowave Ribbon (Mk I) to expand the range of expressive control on offer. All the modulations here are manual.

Ribbon midi provides note, gate, pitchbend and CC1 which is routed to Braids Timbre input. Ribbon pressure CV is used to control the timbre of the Dual Oscillator.

So that's almost comparable to the 5 dimensions of control the Roli offers. Which means, for monophonic use at least, I can get by on what I've got.

So that's more cash for modules."
