New Soma Synths ILLUMINATOR (First Experiment)

video upload by Richard Devine

"ILLUMINATOR is an eight channel converter that turns Eurorack and analog CV signals into a voltage that drives LEDs and LED strips, creating a unique light show in sync with your live performance. CV signals coming from your music gear are already pulsating with the different parts and sounds of your track, so there is no need for any kind of programming or light operator.

You can focus on playing your set and let ILLUMINATOR take care of the rest, creating a dynamic visual show that follows your tracks down to every note and beat!

No presets, no memory-just your music driving the lights. Create intense strobe-like effects by connecting rapid hi-hats from your analogue drums, or use slow external LFOs for a moody ambience during your ambient sessions.

ILLUMINATOR is compatible with standard 12V LED strips that are affordable and widely available. LED strips are flexible and typically come with adhesive on the back, so it’s easy to attach them to any objects and surfaces, including irregular and unusual ones. It can be your Eurorack case, synth stands, walls of the venue, furniture and even your body! This way you can create a unique light show that would otherwise require an expensive (and unwieldy!) lighting setup. Everything you need for your ILLUMINATOR show easily fits into a small backpack for just a couple of hundred euros.

ILLUMINATOR can also run an art installation, as LED strips are far from its only application. It can drive anything that accepts DC 12V with a current up to 0.5A. You can hook up anything from motors, electromagnets to old-fashioned filament bulbs. It’s the perfect beating heart for your weird mechanical steampunk orchestra. Your imagination is the limit!

ILLUMINATOR accepts all types of CV signals in the range from 3 to 20 volts. Each of the eight channels contains an individual trimmer pot that defines the sensitivity of the channel. It not only adjusts the optimal input range for connected CV sources, but it can also set the brightness of each LED strip. The default factory setting for all trimmer pots is made for the range of 5V, compatible with most gear out of the box.

Applying bipolar CV is also possible, but the negative part of the signal will not light up the LEDs (everything below zero will be processed as zero).

CV signals can be connected to ILLUMINATOR using Eurorack mini-jacks or PULSAR-23-like pins and alligator clips. PSU DC IN and all outputs are standard DC sockets 5.5×2.1 mm center plus."

Yamaha CS-30 Analog Synthesizer SN 3142

"One of the strangest and most unique monos ever made.

The CS-30 is a large, knob infested, black analog synthesizer with traditional features. It is a monophonic synth with extensive analog control and shaping. It has two oscillators with separate outputs, two voltage-controlled resonant filters, two voltage-controlled amplifiers and three envelopes. It also features a ring modulator, external audio triggering and a simple but useful 8-step sequencer for use as a sketch pad, pattern or arpeggio effect. The CS-30 does not have any on-board effects, memory nor MIDI. Although the CS-30 is just a monophonic synth with a short 44 note keyboard it offers a lot of programming flexibility, and plenty of knobs."

Roland Jupiter 4 49-Key Synthesizer w/ MIDI

"This Jupiter 4 is in great shape. Cosmetically it's beautiful - the end cheeks are in much better shape than most of the ones you see. It's clean and relatively blemish free. Functionally it is working as it should and sounds fantastic. The synth was serviced at Patch:work in Brooklyn about a year ago and given a clean bill of health. The previous owner seems to have retrofitted it with MIDI - there's a MIDI jack that was installed, but the port is not drilled into the back of the synth's chassis. Instead, it is hanging loose. I have never tried to see if it even works, as I never use MIDI. But if it does, it could be a nice added bonus."

Roland MC-09 PhraseLab SN ZP91376

via this auction

"The MC-09 PhraseLab is a creative tool for producing synth and drum loops - and emulating the TB-303. Combining an analog modeling synth, step sequencer, four-part audio looper, and effects processor, this instrument helps musicians develop loops with multiple variations. The MC-09 is a aimed at musicians, DJs and synth enthusiasts who work with audio phrases and want powerful analog-modeled synthesis at an affordable price.

The Synth component features monophonic bass and lead synth sounds and polyphonic rhythm sounds. There are six control knobs for tweaking the sounds via filters, LFOs, etc. Sounds can be played via the MC-09's pads and 32-step sequencer or MIDI. Drums can be programmed with Roland's popular TR-REC method, first introduced on TR-Series Rhythm Composers.

The audio looper is capable of playing back four monophonic phrases up to six seconds each (phrases can be taken from the internal synth or external sources). In action, users would create synth or drum patterns using the step sequencer and then record them as audio loops. Looping is simple since the PhraseLab uses BPM and measures to automatically stop recording at the perfect point. Loops can be triggered with the step sequencer anywhere desired-even at different pitches. And with the Chop function, the MC-09 can automatically divide a loop into 16 "slices" for constructing new phrases. The step sequencer is also capable of emulating the TB-303's slides and accent effects.

Also on-board are four high-quality effects algorithms: Filter, Isolator, Phaser and Slicer. Effects can be applied to any of the four audio loops or to live inputs, and can be controlled in real time via the knobs for more intuitive tweaking. Once you've created your audio loops and applied effects to them, you can save your work to an optional SmartMedia card. Connections in the back are low-budget RCA style audio inputs and outputs, and MIDI In/Out is also available."

DRONING WITH PO32 TONIC

video upload by Perplex On

"Took the challenge to "misuse" the #PO32 for creating some dark ambient drones. Prepared the sounds with #microtonic with its nice sound morphing feature to allow both subtle or heavy transformations of each sound (like distortion, noise mix, pitch). This morphing is mapped to the right dial on the PO and considering it can store 32 different sounds (on 4 shared tracks though) makes it a pretty multifaceted sound source. Added reverb with #velvetmachine to smooth out the attacks, other than that all Tonic."

Cosmotronic COSMIX PRO / high quality stereo mixer for eurorack / playthrough

video upload by BRiES

"The COSMIX PRO by Cosmotronic was designed to have great headroom, which isn't an easy feat in the eurorack world. It has a very useful feature set that includes center indents for the panning knobs, CV control over the panning/balance of the stereo channels, 2 aux sends and returns (1 mono and 1 stereo), clickless mutes, low cut filters and gain boost switches. It comes in a black version and a silver version (the front panels are made of aluminium). In this video I do a quick rundown of all the features of the COSMIX PRO."
