Polivoks Featured in Franz Ferdinand's Lucid Dreams?

Uploaded on Feb 4, 2009 Cameron Meldrum

This one came in on the AH email list as an example of the Polivoks sound, specifically the filter. 4:40 on is worth a listen to get a feel for the synth. According to the poster: "Sounds mostly LP setting for the bassline throughout, but a BP sweep at 4:40 layering into LP output panning around in stereo. You definitely want to wear headphones on this one"

I don't own a Polivoks but I of course have heard plenty of demos, and I do have an Industrial Music Electronics, Harvestman Polivoks eurorack filter and it definitely goes there. See the demo by Dave Skipper below. This is one of my favorite aggressive filters. It and the Frostwave Resonator (based on the early KORG MS20 filter), can strip the paint off of walls with a bit of resonance.

General video description from YouTube:
"This is the official album version of track 10 from Franz Ferdinand's third album: 'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand'. You can buy the album from iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/ton..."

Frostwave Blue Ringer V1 Ring Modulator Effects Pedal

"This is version 1 of the ring modulator effects box from Frostwave. Signal-in and signal-out jacks on the back of the unit. The first three knobs on the face control input level, wet/dry mix, and output level and the center knob controls the internal oscillator frequency. The right jack on the face of the unit bypasses the oscillator and provides a signal-in to modulate the main signal, and I believe the left jack is a CV-in to control the internal oscillator. 14v AC power supply included."

"If you are looking at this you probably know what it is and what it is capable of. Discontinued and somewhat rare 16 step sequencer for analog synths etc. Has MIDI and DIN sync and provides some unique features not found on any other gear. Check around the web for literature and full specs. Works as it should and includes the US wall wart adaptor."

Frostwave Quad MIDI to CV Converter

I don't believe I've posted one of these before. Interesting bit of gear from Frostwave's history.

"Control up to 4 of your favourite CV-equipped, analogue synthesizers at one time with a MIDI-source computer or digital instrument with this incredibly versatile MIDI to CV / Gate conversion unit.

Info:

The Frostwave Quad MIDI-CV Plus is a rack mount four channel MIDI to analogue CV convertor, designed and manufactured in Australia. The unit operates in three different modes:

1. As a basic four channel convertor, it interprets MIDI note number, velocity, and note on/off on any four adjacent MIDI channels and produces corresponding control voltages and gate voltages to drive up to four analogue mono synths.

Or to control your FROSTWAVE RESONATOR and/or FROSTWAVE BLUERINGER V2

Switches enable each channel to be either V/Oct (Roland, Moog, Arp etc) or Hz/V (Korg MS series). Gate polarity can be either positive or S-trigger (Moog) type. Pitch bend information is interpreted on each channel via a 16-bit DAC and added to the control voltage to give smooth glides. There is a DIN sync output for early drum machines, locked to the MIDI tempo.

2. The second mode is for modular systems, with various MIDI controllers being interpreted from one channel. Eight continuous and four gated outputs are available.

3. In the third mode, the unit is used as a MIDI controller. Plugging a standard analog games joystick into the unit allows samplers etc. to be triggered by the fire buttons. Moving the joystick changes the notes and volume.

External CV On Easel with Frostwave SpaceBeam

Published on Aug 18, 2014 Brian Comnes

Details via Brian Comnes:

"Its not the best audio, but hey it gets the point across.

The SpaceBeam has CV out on a TS jack, so the tip (+voltsgr) goes to the the CV IN and the ring goes to the ground plug on the side of the Easel /

The Space bean puts out 0.12 volts to 10.6 volts depending on distance - when the green LED goes on it is operating. The closer the hand the higher the voltage.

You were going to check on the risk to the Easel from using the ground jack as a voltage reference base for outside CV tools.

Apart fron the SPace Beam I want to use a Moog MP201 which has 4 cv channels - LFO based CV outs ranging from o to +5 volts or -5 to + 5 . "

Sonic Alienator by Frostwave - Rare with PS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Sonic Alienator bit reduction and filter device by Frostwave. These are rare, no longer made and the best of the bit reduction tools in the market. Comes with power supply (110VAC US adaptor) . In excellent condition from smoke free studio. If bit reduction is what you want this unit is the shizzle!

There are a bunch of YouTube videos you can view to hear how this thing works. Basically a decimator combined with a low pass filter which is configurable via the orientation button to apply the filter to either the input prior to the decimator, the output following the decimator, filter alone, or decimator alone. The decimator itself is the core effect on this unit, it basically digitally degrades/distorts a signal to varying degrees depending on the position of the center knob/switch. Something on the order of 24 different decimation settings are available, some subtle, others more severe, though at times there seem to be only small differences between some settings. - half the settings for the central switch are labeled "magnitude decimation/binary decimation (flashing)" while the other half are for "fold" and "swap". Seperate control for sample rate which controls the amount of degredation, controls for "input/drive", which adds a bit of overdrive to the signal at higher levels, "output", and "cutoff" and "reso"(resonnace) for the LP filter. Inside the unit you can adjust a jumper to make the output control either overall effect volume, or mix of straight signal and the effect. No bypass switch on the unit, but this prob can be solved by using the mix setting on the output. This is a mono in and out device."
