Atomic Shadow

via Atomic Shadow on Facebook

"One more in the gear porn series."

Vintage oscillators meet modern gear. You should be able to spot an Akai MFC-42 analog filter rack, and E-mu Morpheus, Roland JP-8000, Akai S-612 sampler with disk drive expansion, and a Moogerfooger amongst the gear.

Atomic Shadow - I Sleep On Magnets - Excerpt

"This is the introduction to a much longer piece from the next album. This is an exploration of how we relate to our machines and gadgets in an emotional way. In the course of the piece software and modular equipment was used to process field recordings. The EMW-200, STG Sea Devil filter, DotCom modules, and Krisp1 ring mod are featured, as well as the usual collection of dusty vintage lab gear, effects and even a couple of iPad apps."

Atomic Shadow Studio Pics & New Website

"Last month the lab experienced upheaval in the form of a major remodel. The ergonomics of the space had left much to be desired. As work began on the Twelve Full Moons album in January of 2011, I needed somewhere to mount the two Hewlett Packard sine wave generators that I planned to use on the album. I had a large metal rack that was sitting in a shed and it was pressed in to service and placed to the left of the desk in the room. Things got out of hand from there and over the next year it grew to four 45 U rack units. More is more!..."

You'll find the full post including more pics at Atomic Shadow's new website. Note the EMW-200 and the Synthesizers.com modular. If you missed it, be sure to check out the EMW-200 review & the EMW-300.

Old oscillating friends...

YouTube Published on Jun 3, 2012 by PositronMusic

"A little test of my audio generators from past times, cleaned and lovely waves again. New pieces with this instruments coming soon...."

If anyone knows the brand names for these let me know and I'll update the labels. Adding the HP label as they seem to be most common.

Atomic Shadow's Lab

Some gear spotting in Atomic Shadow's new lab.

I spy a MATRIXSYNTH magnet and some new Synthesizers.com modules along with the vintage oscillators and some modern gear. Cool retro green cabinet. You can find a nice black and white pic of the previous studio in the IDOW & MATRIXSYNTH Modular Pic of the Week #26 contest.

Hungry Ghost Moon by Atomic Shadow

Hungry Ghost Moon from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

http://www.atomicshadow.com/

A film by Jeff Gustafson. Last July, while working on the Twelve Full Moons album, I found myself on the Salt Flats. The P-51, F4 and Power Plant chopper were used in a Breitling watch ad. The sights sounds around the shoot were captured with a Zoom recorder and horribly abused with Kaoss pads, looped, slowed down and run backwards. The HP sine wave generators make an appearance along with Moog and Pigtronix ring modulators.

2012 Atomic New Year

2012AtomicNewYear from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"A short improvisation featuring HP and BK sine wave generators, prepared ambient recording, ring modulators, tape echo and a dash of reverb."

And an additional note from Atomic Shadow just for us:

"Happy New Year Matrix and everyone in Matrixland!

I have finished the Full Moon album for 2011 and thought it would be nice to do a New Years piece with some of my vintage gear. This piece features a prepared recording of a machine room ambiance with live improve on the B&K and Hewlitt Packard sine wave generators. The generators are running through an Akai MFC42 filter module, Moog Ring Mod, and a Strymon tape echo pedal. The lab coat is for my friend Stephen Howell at Hollow Sun who urged me to have some standards."

Update via Atomic Shadow: "I have two albums for free download at BandCamp and you can find pictures and the latest news at the Atomic Shadow FB page."

Atomic Shadow's DO3 for The Museum of Science Daphne Oram Remix Project

Listen at The Science Museum
(you can also vote for the track)

"Sonic sculpture for the Museum of Science remix content, assembled from the original Oram tracks with two additions. One used vintage sine wave generators and effects pedals, recorded in real time. The second took one of the stems and ran it through a tape echo pedal where the sound was 'played' by changing the feedback and other controls in real time. The other parts were reversed, slowed down, chopped up and pitched and arranged just as they did in the days of tape recorders and scissors. Despite the advantage of doing the editing with a computer it still took about two weeks to get the composition in order."

Atomic Shadow's sinewave generators have been featured in Hollow Sun's Music Laboratory Machines. You can find his other music at http://atomicshadow.bandcamp.com/

Mid Century Electronica

Mid Century Electronica from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"A short piece featuring Hp sine wave generators, tape loops and ring modulators. re-mixed and produced by Steve Howell at Hollow Sun."

via Atomic Shadow:
"Entitled 'Mid Century Electronica' the piece made use of my dusty, tube HP sine wave generators, tape loops and ring modulators. I am very pleased that Stephen Howell of Hollow Sun agreed to produce and re-mix the track. Any day that you can collaborate with a man who has done sound design for Peter Gabriel is an outstanding day.

Here is how Mr. Howell described the piece...
'A short piece featuring vintage, tube HP sine wave generators, tape loops and ring modulators with a photographic homage to the early pioneers of electronica.... Daphne Oram in twin set, the impish Delia Derbyshire of the early BBC Radiophonic Workshop, several tweedy boffins in their music labs, Karlheinz Stockhausen and so many others. A different age when innovation and ingenuity triumphed over the many technical limitations of the age.

Abstract music soundtrack re-mixed and produced by Stephen Howell of Hollow Sun using traditional techniques in a digital age.'

Stephen has made some really unique Kontakt instruments using samples from my vintage equipment. Check the Music Laboratory Machines section at his web site.

http://www.hollowsun.com/

TriOsc, Oscillosine, and Broken all started out as samples from the Atomic Shadow lab."

See http://atomicshadow.bandcamp.com for the latest two releases by Atomic Shadow. A future album titled "Twelve Full Moons" is due shortly after the first of next year.
