Retro Video Game Chiptune Music Synthesizer - NES / Famicom C64

Published on Aug 9, 2016 Arcano Systems

"Create music in the style of the classic video games of the 80s with this MIDI synth. Now on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/2adRRSu"

See the Arcano channel here on MATRIXSYNTH for previous incarnations and kickstarter campaigns. From what I can see they have three core models, the NES, Obscura and GEM-8. The NES is Nintedo only. The Obscura is NES and Famicon C64, and the GEM-8 covers home computer sounds like the Commodore 64, the Apple IIe, and the ZX Spectrum. This appears to be the second incarnation of the Obscura 8-bit engine. Details follow.

"The Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2 is a MIDI synthesizer that enables musicians to create music in the style of the classic video game themes of the 1980s. The device is the successor to the Obscura MIDI 8-bit NES & C64 Chiptune Synthesizer, a project launched on Kickstarter in 2015.

No programming is required and there is no software to install. Simply connect a MIDI controller to create your own original chiptunes or play your favorite retro video game theme tunes live.

This monophonic music synthesizer features several improvements on the original including:

more waveforms
more patches
improved volume envelope system for reduced latency
greater vibrato depth
faster arpeggio frequency

The Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2 comes in two hardware versions. The SMD version is based on the original Obscura MIDI 8-bit NES & C64 Chiptune Synthesizer hardware design, and is available with a handcrafted wooden base. The through-hole version is based on the Arcano MNCS2 hardware design, and is available with or without a wooden base.

A prototype production run of 18 units has already been completed, and 16 of these synths are available as early-delivery rewards. Help fund a second production run and receive an Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2 as a reward.

If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, you can share the music you create with your Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2 by tweeting a link to @ArcanoSystems."

New Cimmerian Caves - Dual Echo/Vibrato/Chorus + Fuzz by Artificial Noise

Published on Jul 28, 2016 Artificial Noise

"Cimmerian Caves, the newest product from Artificial Noise, is a dual Echo/Vibrato/Chorus effects unit with Fuzz Distortion.

Dark, warbly and tape-like. Dense modulating echo's bouncing from ear to ear. Thick, wooly tube-like distortion. Most definitely NOT a sterile clean delay, but warm and full of character.

When the poet Homer talked of Cimmeria, he called it the land of fog and darkness at the edge of Hades. Artificial Noise has taken those words as inspiration for the Cimmerian Cave effects unit.

In the unit are two Echo "Blocks" that can be either Echo/Delay (approx. 925ms max delay time), Vibrato, Chorus or some combination of above. Each block can run in parallel and panned Left to Right, making for great Stereophonic effects, or they can be run in series (Echo 1 into Echo 2). Along with the two effects blocks there is also a Fuzz effect, which runs through both blocks. Cimmerian Caves is a hybrid of analog and digital circuitry, utilizing both worlds for maximum effect.

Cimmerian Caves works great with synthesizers or any line level instrument. And yes, it also works great with guitar and bass too!

No audio processing (effects, eq, compression, etc) was used in the video except Cimmerian Caves.

It's available for pre-sale now at Artificial Noise:
http://www.artificialnoise.ca

Special pre-sale price!!
$325, plus shipping ($20 off)"

Published on Jul 21, 2016 yamahacorporation

"Great for stage, studio and everywhere in between."

Playlist:
Yamaha Music Synthesizer MX BK/BU Series Official Movie
FM Essential Introduction
iOS Application FM Essential Voice demo

Update: Details via Yamaha (Details on FM Essential here):

"The MX BK/BU series synthesizers feature carefully selected sounds taken from the Yamaha MOTIF XS. That powerful sonic palette is packed into sleek packages (available in 49- and 61-note versions) that fit today’s on-the-go life style. But the MX BK/BU Series aren’t just synthesizers; they are designed to bridge the gap between hardware and software. By adding extensive audio and MIDI USB connectivity, advanced DAW and VST controller features and a suite of powerful music production software, the MX BK/BU integrate hardware reliability with controller flexibility to give you the best of both worlds at a ground breaking level of affordability.

Features:

Over 1000 Sounds from the MOTIF Series – The MX BK/BU series contains more than 1000 Voices derived directly from the Yamaha MOTIF XS music production synthesizer. From realistic acoustic sounds like piano, electric piano, strings and drums to complex 8-element synth sounds, the MX BK/BU puts favorite MOTIF XS Voices at your fingertips. The newly designed category selection makes it easier than ever to find the Voice you need. You can even edit and store your own sounds right onboard.

Class-compliant, “plug and play” USB audio/MIDI – The MX BK/BU series features class-compliant, “plug and play” USB audio/MIDI with iOS, Mac and PC. Just plug it in and your MX BK/BU synthesizer becomes your audio and MIDI interface for the rest of your music studio. Monitor all the sounds from your computer via the headphone output of the MX BK/BU or listen to your DAW tracks by connecting the MX BK/BU to external studio monitors or PA gear. The audio converters on the MX BK/BU are made for professional music applications so everything on your computer — even games — will sound better when using the MX BK/BU as the output. The MX BK/BU interface is bi-directional for digitally recording your MX BK/BU directly to your computer or iOS device resulting in high-quality audio.
Plug and Play, “FM Essential” – “FM Essential” is an FM synthesizer app for iPhone and iPad with real-time synth performance and editing. Connect your iOS device to the Yamaha music synthesizer MX BK/BU, and you can do following:

Play all 271 high-quality Voices consisting of preset sounds from the V50, TX81Z and DX100 Legacy FM PLUS presets and combination Voices specially made for the MX BK/BU series.

Change Voices of FM Essential and control various parameters via the MX BK/BU onboard controllers.
Store your changes

Easy Split /Layer Performance Mode – Performance Mode on the MOTIF has always been the place to find instant inspiration and the MX BK/BU is no different. You can easily combine two Voices to play on the keyboard using the dedicated Split and Layer buttons each with their own intelligent arpeggiator and a dedicated Part for a drum track to create evocative Performances that feel like a whole band is playing. The 128 Performances on the MX BK/BU are all user editable so you can customize them for your style of music.

16-Part Multi Timbral and 128-note Polyphony – In addition to Splits and layers, the MX BK/BU features full 16-Part MIDI for creating entire arrangements using DAW software. This also lets you create live performance sets where you can switch between parts without any sound cutoff.. With 128 notes of polyphony there are plenty of notes to play even the densest sequences from your DAW. These features make the MX BK/BU the perfect tone generator solution for live performance and live playback of DAW MIDI tracks.

Extensive Hands-On Controls for VSTs and DAWs – The MX BK/BU also features solid knobs and durable buttons for controlling internal sounds, DAW parameters and VST instruments. The deceptively simple interface is combined with a remote template editor on your computer so any VST you own or any new VSTs you buy can be easily setup to be controlled by the MX. There are advanced integration templates for use with a variety of DAWs. When used with Cubase, there is even an AI knob so any parameter can be controlled by the large rotary encoder just by mousing over it. It’s never been quicker to take full control of Cubase.

Complete Suite of Music Production Software Included – The MX BK/BU series is the only hardware synth in its price range to come with a complete suite of music production software tools. The included Steinberg Cubase AI features 48 audio tracks and 64 MIDI tracks, notation, built-in VST effects, so with just the MX BK/BU and AI you can do complete productions. But we didn’t stop there; it comes bundled with Steinberg Prologue and the Yamaha YC-3B organ emulator so you have some compelling VSTs to get started. Plus there are Remote Template editors for setting up controls of VSTs.

Cubasis LE – In addition to Cubase AI, the MX BK/BU series is compatible with Cubasis LE, a DAW app for iOS. Connect MX BK/BU to your iOS device (requires Lightning to USB Camera Adapter) and unlock USB audio and MIDI recording between MX BK/BU and Cubasis LE.

Complete Analog and Digital Connectivity – In addition to the USB audio/MIDI port, the MX BK/BU has a USB TO DEVICE port for external data storage to USB flash drive. You can even play back .WAV data from the flash drive. If you want to add a tablet or an MP3 player to your system just connect to the AUX input using a mini stereo cable and you are ready to go.

Lightweight Design with a Quality Keyboard – While almost all other keyboard controllers use inexpensive OEM keyboards, the MX BK/BU series features an expertly crafted keyboard that only Yamaha — the world’s largest keyboard manufacturer — could produce. Weighing only 3.8kg (MX49 BK/BU) or 4.8kg (MX61 BK/BU), either synthesizer can be carried easily with one hand. MX synthesizers have a compact design so they are easy to carry to the gig and also fit easily into today’s compact home music production studios.
VCM Effects – MX BK/BU synthesizers come equipped with VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) effects, which simulate vintage effectors at the circuit level. The sounds of the ‘70s are brought back to life, through simulating the hard-to-find vintage sounds of equalizer, flanger, phaser, and wah effects introduced by the keyboard legends of the era."

Remidi - Wearable Musical Instrument - Glove & Wrist Controller

via http://remidi-pro.com

"We created a new wearable midi instrument called the Remidi T8, which is composed of a sensor-loaded glove and a MIDI wrist controller that allows you to use your hand as a musical device by combining sounds with your fingertips, palm and hand motions. The T8 has eight sensors embedded into the glove, three in the palm and one in each fingertip, which give you the ultimate range of motion and customized settings. You can individually program each sensor to create new sounds or remix existing ones.

Here’s some articles about us :

https://www.namm.org/nammu/wearable-instruments-cutting-edge-tech-fashion
https://www.yahoo.com/tech/surface-synthesizer-remidi-t8-wearable-181547261.html"

via the Remidi website:

"The Remidi T8 turns the whole human hand into music by playing infinite combinations of notes and sounds

A NEW WAY TO CREATE MUSIC

The T8 gives complete motion freedom, works on every surface and allows to combine motion with music, in order to perform and approach with music in a whole new way and free the art of sound.

THE BRACELET AND THE GLOVE

The wristband hosts the control center, while the glove hosts 8 pressure sensitive spots to trigger notes.
They plug to each other through
the magnetic connector on the back of the hand.
AIR MODULATION

The motion sensors opens to a wider expression of music: players can still alter the sound while a notes already started, simply by moving their hand or twisting their wrist.

ONE HAND, ENDLESS KEYBOARDS

The encoder on the bracelet has the main function to browse through users' note sets. Players just turn it to switch from a note set to another, from a C scale to a F scale, from a famous song riff to a set of samples in just one touch!"

New Behringer Synth Teaser Videos

Published on Jul 7, 2016 Music Group

She is analog.
She is discrete.
She sounds amazing.
And she is REAL!!!

Follow-up to this post.

In the 5th video you can see the name of the synth is the DeepMind12, and it will include routable effects and a graphical screen. You can also see a Powered by KLARK TEKNIK on it. KLARK TEKNIK are makers of signal processors and mixers. Note there are 4 FX slots. Effects seen include various types of Chorus, RackAmp, Delay, Reverb. Mood Filter, Flanger, Enhancer, and Dual Pitch can also be spotted as well. Each affect appears to have a number of editable parameters. You can see the RackAmp has parameters for PRE, BUZ, PMC, CRM, DRV, LVL, LOW, HI, CAE. The DSP algorithms are from Klark Teknik and TC Electronic. There is also expected to be a dedicated iPad Editor. At :16 you can see what appears to be it resting on top on top (screen grab further below). Note the different Reverb types in the editor. At :21 in the video you can see the routing of the effects change. At :34 it appears you can stack the same effect types - you can see Hall Reverb in slot 1 and in slot 4 pictured below. Word is it will have a built in arpeggiator as well.

Update2: An update via Uli Bheringer on the new DeepMind12, spotted by Soviet Space Child:

"The DeepMind12 has 4 integrated FX Engines which can we used simultaneously but also synced to the synthesizer itself. Each engine is loaded with more than 30 high-quality FX algorithms from TC Electronic and Klark Teknik. These are true world-class FX, many of which have been derived from TC Electronic's acclaimed signal processors as well as Midas' high-end mixing consoles.

As a world's first, the DeepMind has built in Wifi and allows for full remote control of nearly all parameters - all through typical tablets.

While the price has not been confirmed nor any price indication been given to retailers, we like to manage expectations.
With approx. 4,000 components, the DeepMind12 is one of the most complex synthesizers that has ever been built. Due to its discrete design structure, it has vastly more components than you will likely find in any of the current synthesizers on the market.

While it has always been our company philosophy to work on very small margins, we would however never sacrifice component or manufacturing quality nor sell below cost. Like all our products, the DeepMind12 will come with a 3 Year Warranty program.

These are truly exciting times and thank you for all your interest and support :-)

Uli"

SYNTHBOY+ Special Edition From Ninstrument

Published on Jun 28, 2016 Ninstrument.com

"SKIP TO 3:15 for audio demo only!"

via Ninstrument

The CLOCK OUT modification is the newest feature of the Synthboy+. This is included with our Special Edition model. The CLOCK OUT is a voltage out that can be used directly with most modular synthesizers. This clock out can be modified on the fly using the bottom two knobs on the front of the base station. This is used directly with LSDJ. Please watch the video for more details of use.

Our BIG BONUS is the included heavily modified Gameboy Color. Over the last few years I have grown to really appreciate the reliability and speed the Gameboy Color provides. I truly believe it is the best tool to use with LSDJ. The original Gameboy Color did need a couple of modifications in order to bring it into the Synthboy+ line. First we added a front light SP mod, which essentially takes the front light out of a Gameboy SP, cut it to size and fit it which allows a overall brighter screen for daily use.

The real challenge was to find a way to add the 9 pin din connector. We ended up custom molding a new bottom using Polyester resin. Between the nylon DB9 connector and polyester resin molding you can expect durable use over the years."

Dave Smith Announces OB-6 Desktop Analog Synth Module

Desktop Version of Tom Oberheim/Dave Smith Synth Collaboration to Ship in Early Fall

San Francisco, CA—June 23, 2016—Dave Smith Instruments LLC today announced that they will begin shipping a desktop module version of their acclaimed OB-6 six-voice analog synthesizer in the early fall. Like the keyboard version, it boasts a sound engine inspired by Oberheim’s original SEM and features an all-analog signal path with discrete VCOs, VCAs, and filters. The knob-per-function front panel offers immediate access to virtually all parameters.

As Dave Smith explained: 'The OB-6 has met with unprecedented approval from across the music industry. In just the four months since its release, it’s been adopted by an extraordinary number of artists and is already appearing in projects across the world.' Added Smith: 'We wanted to make the desktop version available as quickly as possible to make it even easier for musicians to take it on the road or into the studio. We made it a priority that the desktop version retain the same powerful sound, and easy-to-use front panel interface as the keyboard version.'

Smith continued:
“We’ve also added a poly chain feature so that any two OB-6s can be paired for 12-voice polyphony. That is a monstrously big sound.”

The essence of OB-6’s vintage sound is its discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) and discrete, state-variable filter, both based on the classic Oberheim SEM (the core of Tom Oberheim’s acclaimed 4-voice and 8-voice synthesizers). Voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the all-analog signal path. Said Tom Oberheim: “The desktop module sounds every bit as good as the OB-6 keyboard because, on the inside, it’s exactly the same — the same VCOs, VCFs, and VCAs and the same big, in-your-face SEM sound that people have always loved.”

The module weighs approximately 13 lbs (5.9 kg) and measures 20.75” L x 7.8” W x 4.4” H (52.0 cm x 19.8.cm x 11.2 cm).

The OB-6 desktop module will be available in the early fall with a projected MAP of $2,299."
