Entanglement

video upload by Martin Peters

"I have been noodling away on the guitar for quite a while now. Looking for new inspiration and musical insights. Doing this I sort of neglecting the synthesizers. I barely touched them since our last Beyond Berlin concert on E-Day in April 2023. In Januari I bought the Behringer Victor module and came up with this music. Last Thursday I switched the synths on again and the music was still in the Cirklon. I added some bits and recorded the music. What you see is the second take because in the first take the Minimoog solo's were not good enough.
It starts with a sequence on the Behringer Victor. Then the bass from the Synthesizers.com modular comes in. After that sequences from the Rob Hordijk OSC HRM, Oberheim SEM, Verbos Harmonic Oscillator, Korg Opsix and DSI Mopho are added. Strings are from the Waldorf Q Keyboard and the solo's from the Moog Minimoog."

This SN was previously posted here with custom knobs back in 2019.

"OBERHEIM OBX 8 VOICE s/n 802701 , Encore MIDI 120 programs, custom cherry wood cheeks, flight case. Production 1979/1980. The first and the best Oberheim polysynth.
FUNCTIONALITY
This synth has been fully restored by Rosensound, one of the best in the business.Vintage Oberheim synths have a reputation for being inherently unreliable, which is not really accurate. The electrical design flaws and common stress/failure points on these synths are well known. Provided they are properly restored and upgraded by a competent technician they are quite reliable. I've had this one since 2021. It's given me no trouble. It tunes and scales so accurately that sometimes it's quite nice to play before hitting autotune. All key bushings are new of course, so it's nice to play.
All functions working as normal. If you own one of these, expect to periodically open it up to clean J-wires on the old pratt-read keyboard. This is not technically difficult and there are resources available on the internet. Nothing this old will run without periodic maintenance.
COSMETICSSee photos. I have tried to show every unflattering mark on the front panel, there aren't many but the buyer should be able to see what they're getting. Bottom panel has light paint scratches consistent with a 1979 synth, but no metal gouges or whacks.Overall I think the front panel is clean, very nice IMO.

By the way, I have the original cheeks which burst at the side (a common issue as they used cheap plywood with a solid wood veneer) - they're not hideous by any means, I just prefer the cherry ones. If the buyer wants the original cheeks I can include them too, but be aware they'll not fit in the case, so separate shipping costs will be incurre"

"I am a music hobbyist, a bassist in fact, and this synth belongs in the hands of a professional keyboard player or producer ... or anyone with more talent than me. I'm sure someday soon I'll regret selling it. But frankly though, I bought it because I couldn't wait for the Behringer UB-Xa any longer. But now that I have the UB, which in no way sounds as beautiful as the OB-X8, I'm selling the OB.

Now that I have the two to compare, the most immediate difference is the build quality of the OB so completely outshines the UB. Next is the tone. The lows and especially the lo-mids are tight and clear on the OB. The UB is a bit boomy or mushy in comparison with a tendency to overdrive without adjustment on the board. The OB also has more preset storage, 128 more locations. However, given my lack of skills, musical and financial needs, I've got to sell the OB. My loss is your benefit."

See this previous post for build quality on the UB-Xa.

S1:Ep6 - The sixth in a series of 10 videos!

The Classic Oberheim OB-8 - Basic Programming Tutorial

The Oberheim OB-8 is a subtractive analog synthesizer launched by Oberheim in early 1983 and discontinued in 1985. As the fourth product in the OB-series of polyphonic compact synthesizers, the OB-8 was the successor to the OB-Xa. The number of production was about 3,000 units.

The OB-8 features eight-voice polyphony, two-part multi-timbrality, a 61-note processor-controlled piano keyboard, sophisticated programmable LFO and envelope modulation, two-pole and four-pole filters, arpeggiator, external cassette storage, MIDI capability and 120 memory patches, 24 bi-timbral patches, and used the Z80 CPU. The musician's interface also consists of two pages of front panel programmable controls, left panel performance controls and a set of foot pedals and switches."

Additional Tone Tweakers Listings, also on Reverb

"This is the highest quality DMX with MIDI you'll find.
The unit shown in the photos is the one for sale now. We paid our tech for the 17 hours of highly skilled labor + parts required to make this unit better than the rest. No expense spared. No corners cut. The end result is an item that's way better than others of its type you may find and which is justifiably more expensive. Or you could buy a cheaper one and pay us a lot more to restore it for you to get it up to this ones level... if we're available for outside restoration work.

In addition to necessary repairs, here's what was done to this unit in an effort to increase reliability and keep this unit working perfectly way longer than others out there:

Full cleaning inside and out. Power supply electrolytic capacitors replaced, jumper wires, new regulator with heat sync, IC socket (16p x 2), resoldered molex connector pins. Installed new battery and diode. Replaced molex connector terminals (x40). Removed original slide pots and replaced with new ones for perfect, smooth, crackle free performance. Installed 20p IC socket x4. Cleaned and lubed switch contacts. Installed new rubber feet. Replaced a bunch of ICs (oerformance related, won't change this unit's sound). Replaced voice card molex connectors.

This unit is in beautiful shape and is ready to play and record with, no excuses or BS typical of other vintage gear deals and no, we won't sell it for what unrestored junk (or other selllers supposedly serviced gear that was done as quickly and as cheaply as possible) sells for. You get what you pay for.
