cicadidae | ambient/drone music with modular synthesizer

video upload by M Hob

"Cicadas are coming back this year and their song blends more and more each day with the landscape. I wanted to compose something which evoked my feeling when I listen to these wonderful insects buzzing away late on the afternoon. Most of my music is completely improvised (often building from how a certain patch performs or over randomized sequences) but for this track I wanted to try something different: composing a more rigid structure around which I could play.

Before I started this channel most of my music playing was strictly interpretational (playing from sheet music). I feel confident enough now that having something to guide me will do just that: guide, not impose strict guidelines.

The track was performed on the Monsterdrone using VCV Rack as a tuning guide (while playing with the pitch knobs) as a mixer through NYSTHI's Vector Mixer. I programmed the Crow to create a Lorenz attractor which controlled the position on the Vector Mixer, creating the orbiting feeling of the 4 voices on Monsterdrone. This enabled me to react and interact with the evolution of the song by choosing at what moments the song would intentionally evolve. The Minibrute added a deeper droning voice, controlled by the 3 position parameter on the Lorenz attractor. This voiced was shaped by a long looping envelope which hopefully adds a subtle rhythmic wave to the track."

undersky | exploring VBrazil's Monsterdrone synthesizer!

video upload by M Hob

"The Monsterdrone is a strange (in the best sense of the word) synthesizer - featuring 8 VCOs arranged over two banks (4 pairs of oscillators) with FM between the two banks, an inbuilt mixer for the 4 voices, and a very fun rhythmic section in lieu of an envelope, an internal clock and 3 filters (2 independent BP filters and a resonant LP). It's a Brazilian synthesizer built by VBrazil Systems (https://www.vbrazilsystems.com/) and it excels at creating thick droning sound and textures (as its name implies).

In this track I decided to simply play the mixer (and rhythmic section) of a fixed tuning on each of the 4 voices as I explore the different possibilities of this great synth, without any other instruments or modulation sources. Everything is played over some beautiful sky footage I've recorded since the spring thunderstorms began here in Brazil during the last few weeks (ending one of the longest draughts in recorded history where I live). To add some atmosphere to the track I used Ableton's Hybrid Reverb with an impulse response recorded at Maes Howe (https://www.openair.hosted.york.ac.uk...), the neolithical cairn in Orkney and used Freakshow Industries MISHBY for some high frequency glitching/tape distortion.

Everything was recorded live on Ableton."

Dune Expectral - Brazilian Synth Tracks Featuring VBrazil Systems, RECO-SYNTH Pogona 3, Novation Peak & the Moog Grandmother

Dune Expectral

Note this the first post to feature the RECO-SYNTH Pogona 3.

Playlist:

1. Sunset Synthesizer - Eurorack and Moog Grandmother Brazilian Jams
Be welcome! I am very happy to have you here.

This is a challenge, I am looking for new timbres with my synthesizers, but I decided to look for them in different places, in this case it was a wonderful sunset in the city of Sorriso, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

All sounds, modification were created in real time. I used the Moog grandmother to make the bass, the Eurorack modular Vinicius Brazil to create the melogic part, the Novation Peak for the leads, and Pogona 3 by Arthur Joly to create the percussive part, the whole drum is 100% analog.

The melodies are coming through ableton live only this is digital. And of course this wonderful video captured by La Isla Filmes.
2. Wave Folder - JAM SYNTH - Eurorack Modular, Novation Peak
In this jam I used Vinicius Brazil's Wave Folder with Lizard 3. The sound it generates is just amazing. The drums used Arthur Joly's Pogona 3.
3. Quantum - LIVE SYNTH - Eurorack Modular, Moog Grandmother, Novation Peak and Ocean Verb.
I used a Motu microlite to connect Novation Peak, Moog Grandmother and my two modular synthesizers VB and Pogona 3. Ableton live only sends the signal via midi, the rest I did in real time by the synthesizers using the modulations and a WAVEFOLDER to create distortion. I love this!
4. LIVE SYNTH - Eurorack Modular, Moog Grandmother, Novation Peak
I used a Motu microlite to connect Novation Peak, Moog Grandmother and my two modular synthesizers VB and Pogona 3. Ableton live only sends the signal via midi, the rest I did in real time by the synthesizers using the modulations and a WAVEFOLDER to create one distortion.
5. POGONA Synthesizer -- Fantastic World Vol 2
Pogona 3 is a synthesizer made in Brazil by a guy named Arthur Joly. I recently acquired it and am getting to know the toy.

STG Soundlabs TTSH Lizard Modular Synth | Matt Chadra

Published on Feb 17, 2019 ClavAnother

"An arpeggiated patch played from the Novation 61SL MKIII. I'm running the TTSH oscillators into the STG Post Lawsuit Lowpass Filter; my TTSH has the Moog filter in it currently, so it was cool to sub the ARP filter in. I am using the Vinicius Brazil Multiwaves LFOs to modulate the filter frequency and amount, and to trigger the STG Envelope Generator."

3-Voice Patch using the VBrazil Eurorack Modules

Published on Sep 13, 2017 Ícaro Ferre

"The patch in this video was created using mostly VBrazil / VB Modular eurorack modules. The idea behind this patch was to use the wave switcher in my two Lizard2 modules (mk2 and mk3) to work as “gate sequencers” since the switcher is linked to the sequencer stage. I’m using the Lizard2 MK3 to sequence the Aether Oscillator and the Lizard2 MK2 as the main clock and switcher for the drum voice.
What’s cool about this patch is that I can basically change the sequence by moving around the signals going into the switchers.

For the main voice, I’m sending different outputs of the Aether VCO and switching between them using the switcher in the Lizard2 MK3. The output of the Lizard2 is then fed into the Overfolder and finally into the Bastl Instruments Skis (which I’m using as a VCA being controlled by the VBrazil ADSR).
For the drum voice, I’m sending a sine wave and some digital noise out of the MultiLFO module and into different inputs of the Lizard2 MK2 switcher to create a kick and a snare. I’m then using the 2 envelopes of the Skis to controle the amplitude and pitch of the MultiLFO (which are being triggered by the main clock)."

Synth Diy Guy Featured Builder: Vinicius Brazil!

Published on Sep 2, 2017 Synth Diy Guy

"A visit and a chat with my partner and teacher Vinicius Brazil of VBrazil Modular.

Here´s a translation of our conversation:

" SYNTH DIY GUY - Featured Builder - Vinicius Brazil
Q - Hi Vinicius! V - Hi
Q - All good? V - All great!
Q - Tell us a little bit about your path, how you got started with electronics and music.
V - I arrived at electronics thanks to music. When I was a kid, 15 years old, I got my first guitar, and in Brazil it was very expensive to acquire guitar pedals. So I started to take some of my friends’ pedals and study their insides, this was in the 60 ́s, and from there I started making my own pedals. Copying at first, then creating muy own solutions. This got me excited and I went on to study Electronics and graduate college as an Electronic Engineer.
Q- Cool, and what kinds of pedals did you make at first?
V - All were guitar pedals. I started of course with fuzz and distortion, then on to more sophisticated things like flangers, phasers and delays. This was during the 70 ́s. In the end of the 70 ́s synthesizers started attracting me. That ́s when I built my first semi modular synth in 1978/79.
Q - Do you still have that synth?

VBrazil Modular - Lizard2 mk3 + MultiLFO mk2 - FM Patch

Published on Aug 21, 2017 Ícaro Ferre

"Another patch using the VBrazil Modular system. In this patch, I'm using the MultiLFO mk2 (in VCO mode) as a FM modulator for the Lizard 2 MK3 (set to Mode 6 / Sine HD)."

VBrazil Modular - Lizard2 mk3 HSYNC Mode 3 Test

Published on Aug 21, 2017 Ícaro Ferre

"Exploring the Mode3 of the new Lizard2 mk3 module.
Mode 3 adds 4 oscillators to the main oscillator. These 4 oscillators can be linearly detuned and mixed / added to the output using knobs 1-8.
Sending a gate or trigger to the HSYNC input in this mode makes all 5 waves reset to the same phase, creating a very interesting effect and "enhancing" the beginning of the note.
The VAR button changes the waveform of the 5 oscillators."

The Deadbug Buffer : A Eurorack Active Multi on a Homemade panel

Published on Mar 20, 2017 Synth Diy Guy

"Deadbug is a prototyping technique where you glue an IC upsidedown on a copper panel and make point to point connections for everything else. A Buffered Multi is a CV distributor that preserves an input voltage unaltered over three low impedance outputs. Very useful for sending critical CV to multiple destinations. Have Fun.
