"Here is a side-scrolling scope view of some interesting LFO waveforms, and a soundtrack of rhythmically modulated analog drone sounds. It was generated with a prototype version of the upcoming Grendel Drone Commander 2 Eurorack synthesizer module.

"Rare Waves LLC demonstrates a Grendel Drone Commander 2 prototype in Eurorack format.

Drone Commander 2 is a true analog synthesizer with discrete transistor technology. It has 12 knobs for lots of hands on control, and every knob is a push-pull switch that activates tone modification options.

It retains the original Drone Commander filter, and adds a second independently controlled filter for contrast. The second filter is a smooth and clean 4-pole lowpass filter (-24dB/oct VC-LPF). It has an attack-release envelope generator and serves as a lowpass gate, to control the volume and tone.

The LFO section has been completely revised.. its kind of hard to describe, listen instead (please pardon the noodling)

The optional Expander module can be connected to add voltage control. It has 18 patch points including CV/Gate input, Clock in/out, and external audio input. Connecting a MIDI controller and MIDI-CV converter to the Expander gives the Drone Commander 2 its full potential for melodic performance, sequencing, and synchronization.

The video soundtrack was recorded by line-in, with a bit of reverb and delay FX .. Yamaha SPX-1000 and Korg SDD-1200.

A stand-alone version may be in the works also. Thanks for watching!

"Drone music made by patching out the Grendel RA-9 Grenadier with some prototype oscillators and filters. Prototypes include a harmonized triple VCO, VC crossfader, and 4-pole discrete transistor LPF. Grenadier is the source of clock and pulse LFO, and also the sequenced bassline. 2015."

"A quick run through the Grenadier's functions: playing the keypad in real-time, activating the analog sequencer, storing a rhythm in the 32-step event loop, synchronizing two Grenadiers, and some basic patching.

Not to be confused with opto-sensors, the kind used with many opto theremin type devices this device utilizes a photo diode.

I have modified my kit with a custom designed housing and lense housing for the photo diode which is extended from the circuit board and housing.

The photo diode responds very well to the red and infra-red spectrums but other light sources have unique results as well, here are some of my experiments for you, my loyal subscribers.

Video re-done with better audio and entertainment value...Hope you like it better this time, this is a hard device to capture because it works best in darkness."

"Demonstrating synthesis of vowel sounds using the Grendel Formant Filter Eurorack module. This 100% analog filter allows voltage-controlled selection of English vowels from a 2-dimensional map. The map corresponds to the International Phonetic Alphabet vowel chart, a.k.a. the vowel trapezium.

In this video, an analog joystick with X and Y CV outputs is used to control the filter module. Two channels of MIDI-CV converter may also be used. The module is designed to accept CV sources with 5 volt range. Either -2.5 .. +2.5 volts or 0.. +5 volts can be used for optimum control. Wider CV ranges (up to +/- 10V) will not cause damage, but should be attenuated for best articulation.

Visualizations were made with a Tektronix TDS 350 digital oscilloscope in XY display mode, 1 volt per division.
