The Son-chief - Dalek Steampunk Toaster

"Frontish view, showing front touch-horn.

The Son-Chief was named for the 1930’s toaster that is its chassis. It’s built on the 555 Noisemusick kit. IR sensors on top, next to two sets of independent flashing LEDs, act as a primitive sequencer. The Son-Chief has 4 touch zones - the two copper ashtrays, the horn and the chassis itself.

Hollow Sun Steampunk MUSIC LABORATORY MACHINES SUITE

via Hollow Sun

"As the popularity of the Music Laboratory Machines continues to grow, many have requested the facility to buy all of them as a bundle so this is just such an opportunity with the advantage of a modest discount on buying them individually.

The bundle includes Oscillosine, Organa, Broken, Interference Generator, TriOsc, Techtron, Shangri La, Novalite, Modular Toolkit and Cognosphere and, as a special bonus, the Dotcom Xmas Special is also thrown in for good measure. A total of eleven unique and intriguing Kontakt 4 instruments. This represents not just great value but provides a massive palette of sounds to be exploited in your music.

Despite their unashamed and bold oddness and eccentricity, the Music Laboratory Machines are suitable for almost any genre of contemporary music and are a sound designer's wet dream with the sonic capabilites they offer. They are also ideal tools for movie, TV, library music and games scorers to bring something different to the table.

Hollow Sun's Music Laboratory Machines represent not just innovative GUI design and sound design possibilities but are also great value for money. This bundle brings all of these instruments into one neat 1.5GB package that'll also save you a few of the Queen's shillings as well....

Which is not to be sniffed at in this day and age!"

NAMM: SSL Modulation Orgy

YouTube Uploaded by iammodman on Jan 13, 2012

"Quick vid of some orgy action"

via Synthetic Sound Labs (SSL) aka teamsynth.com

"The SSL 2260 Modulation Orgy LFO is the illegitimate Euro cousin to our 1260 Tap Tempo LFO, and is a special module indeed. You can set the LFO frequency by tapping the TAP button, supplying a periodic gate to the SYNC input, or by changing the Tempo CV. You can build tap tempo effects vibratos and tremolos, tap tempo controlled drum machines or tap tempo sequencer clocks. Or use it the other way around - control the 2260 tempo with a sequencer! You can even use multiple 2260s to create polyrhythmic LFOs using the built-in Multiplier ratios. Awesome possibilities!

The 2260 can produce 8 waveforms, including a random (sample & hold) wave..."

Giving this one the NAMM label as I believe it is new. The only other post I have featuring the steampunk Orgy was back on Dec 31 here. Mmm... a Steampunk Orgy.

Modular synth: Monolith2 custom cabinet

flickr By Jon Sonnenberg

Click through for the mouse overs for each module and more pics.

"I don't really know much about this synth except that the modules that I have working sound great and are mostly made up of discrete parts. I bought this off of a coworker when I was working at a music store several years ago. Originally, there was a different case, with speakers and a copper touch-plate keyboard and the word "Monolith 2". The inside was a nightmare of spaghetti wiring. I decided to tackle one thing at a time and first rebuilt the cabinet and added the multiples at the bottom. Someday, I would like to get the keyboard working."

A bit ARP 2500 inspired in design mixed with some steampunk. The top row reminds me of a specific type of graphic design, but I don't know the name.

nonlinearity III

"Q: So what do you do?

A: I make sound instruments that no one's ever seen before, and then I teach myself how to play them.

Q: Do you play them well?

A: Well, if no one's ever seen one before, how can they tell if I'm playing it badly or not?

Triple soundbox-drone nonlinearity study, constructed and recorded during my 2011 residency at the Danish Institute for Electro/Acoustic Music, Aarhus and edited during a shorter residency at MOKS, Mooste. Glam-rock, audio-responsive soundbox built for KT."

Steampunk Dieselpunk styled Shruthi-1 with Door Handle

via this auction

"Unique handmade steampunk/dieselpunk styled synthesizer module. Inside the case is a Shruthi-1 monosynth/sequencer with SMR-4 filter from Mutable instruments. This is a hybrid design with extremely flexible digital oscillators fed into an analogue filter and VCA. See http://mutable-instruments.net/ for full details of functionality. The case is wooden with a solid brass sheet front panel. The panel is not perfect and has a few “dings” on it but they add to the atmosphere of the case. The pressure gauge and handle are there purely for aesthetic purposes and serve no function (although the handle does move and I did consider hooking up to a pot for filter sweeps etc.). The unit can be battery powered (6 x AA rechargeable or alkaline) or can be supplied with 9v via the socket on the rear (centre +ve). What looks like old fashioned bulbs are in fact LED's cunningly disguised to look like bulbs! They respond to the button pushes to assist in identifying which menu is active.

Unlike a mass produced plastic gadget, the case of this synth is not perfect. But that's not the point...it is quirky and you won't find another like it. It is 'new' in the sense that I haven't taken it out of the house or used it other than for testing. But it does have a “handled” feel because it is...er... handmade :-)"
