Evening Synths Challenge #2 - Modal Skulpt, VXXY DCM8, Teenage Engineering PO-16 factory
video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces
"This session was quite challenging. A VA synth, a rare digital chiptune drum machine and a small bare bone synth. Overall, I'm very happy with the result. The most fun part was playing the melody line live with the PO-16. Although you really have to concentrate to play everything correctly with the very small buttons.
The Setup was:
Synths: Modal Skulpt, VXXY DCM8, Teenage Engineering PO-16 factory
Effects: Oto Machines BOUM, Beetronics FX Seabee, Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, Beetronics FX Swarm
Freely selectable effects: GFI Systems Specular Reverb 2
Recordings:
Drums: VXXY DCM8 - Beetronics FX Seabee - Oto Machines BOUM
Pads: Modal Skulpt - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI Systems Specular Reverb 2
Melody: Engineering PO-16 factory - Beetronics FX Swarm - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, GFI Systems Specular Reverb 2
The Reason:
How do you deal with having too much gear (like me)? It can hamper creativity, but for me there is also a way to use it to boost creativity. Challenge yourself with it!
Here is my challenge:
1. Random selection of three sound generators to use (plus drums can be added with the EZdrummer and a rhythm sample)
2. Random selection of four effect devices to use (plus another two freely selectable effects can be used)
3. Everything has to be finished in one evening (after work until bedtime).
The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone."

VXXY DCM8 Looping & Stuttering
Published on Jul 14, 2013 AudioCentralMagazine·159 videos
"The VXXY DCM8 Drum Machine offers a wealth of chiptune sounds ready to program and use for rhythm pattern & song. Still, during playback, you can loop 4 steps (shift+3), loop 2 steps (shift+4), hold beat (shift+5) or sidechaining audio output with stutter at playback speed with pattern env profile (shift 6). Nice!!!"

VXXY DCM8 First impressions

VXXY DCM8 First impressions from Equinoxoz music solutions on Vimeo."The VXXY Chip Tune Drum machine or DCM8 as its creators dubbed it is a very fun little groove box. I haven't seen too many videos floating around for it so I figured I would do one starting with just a blank slot and fill it up "on the fly"
You can create TONS of grooves with this thing and the sounds are all very arcadey and retro which makes it inspiring to work with. It has a few performance options in it and the way it is programmed is akin to some of the classic XOX style TR Drum machines.
I merely scratched the surface in this video and I will do more video's on it with other gear to give an idea what it sounds like 'in the mix'."

Featured: Roland MC-202, Teenage Engineering OP-1, Brian Castro modded x0xio x0xb0x, Allessandro Cortini & The Harvestman's SuONOIO, the vxxy chiptune synth, original Sequentix P3 sequencer, Paul Maddox aka Vacoloco's Gorf sequencer, original STEIM cracklebox, Tom Bugs' aka Bugbrand Board Weevil, and various Mutable Instruments Shruthis. Note each Shruthi is different. Lorne picked up the larger red Shruthi featuring three different Shruthi's from a DJ on a farm in South Africa.
Also worth noting: MATRIXSYNTH T-Shirt!
Update via Lorne: "The P3 Sequentrix was made in the uk by Colin Fraser who is producing the cirkilon now and I bought of ebay from a south African dj on a farm.
The shruthi-xt is a design by Frank [mailto:daniels@daniels-cards.de] aka on forums and flickr as fcd72. He runs a card company in Germany.
Frank designed the programmer knob system and did the case layout as a kit. He has done dozens of wild kits in various colours and designs.
The shruthi’s pcb designs and code and many different filter designs are the work of Olivier Gillet in Paris.
Frank’s shruthi-xt box holds 3 filters, I controller and a power regulator. The ver .96 code allows them to cascade in series or parallel.
Olivier took mutable into a small but fully registered company and took the big plunge. He has 800+ kits out there working.
He’s a friend of Todd Bailey (WTPA) and also wrote the code for the Dr Otto biscuit to turn it into a synth."
