Meet the M0SS 101 Synthesizer by Andrew John March

M0SS 101 DEMO video upload by Andrew March

"A quick demonstration on how to build a patch with the M0SS-101 synthesizer."

From the creator of WVR, the the M0SS 101 virtual analog monosynth is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.

"M0SS-101 is a virtual analog monosynth built for a pure, hands-on subtractive synthesis, packed into a compact, rugged guitar pedal enclosure.

With 26 buttons and a single encoder, M0SS-101 gives you intuitive access to a deep 42-parameter virtual analog synthesis engine. Press a button to select a parameter, turn the encoder to modify it, and monitor your signal flow via the LED system.

Using a MIDI controller, you can map any parameter via simple MIDI learn, making it easy to integrate into your setup. Up to 17 presets can be saved and recalled for quick access to your favourite sounds.

The 26 RGB LEDs use colour and brightness to represent signal flow, modulation paths, settings and selections. A separate row of 11 LEDs at the bottom gives you instant visual feedback on the currently selected parameter. I aim to offer an affordable, compact, and versatile instrument, without sacrificing features, ergonomics, or most importantly, fun. I hope you'll enjoy playing this synth as much as I have :'-)"

New Kurzweil PC3K to offer 128M of User Sample Memory

This one in via Gregory Shiff. First the official press release:

"New Kurzweil PC3K Combines Game-Changing Technology with K Series Sample Library

Waltham MA - Kurzweil Music Systems proudly announces the release of the PC3K keyboard, expanding the PC3 line to include key new features along with backwards compatibility with the legendary K Series product line.

In addition to all of the innovative features that made the PC3 a major success, the PC3K features 128 MB of non-volatile user sample memory. Utilizing a breakthrough in sample flash technology, the PC3K allows user samples to remain intact after a power-cycle, with zero load time upon powering back on. The PC3K can load .WAV files, but more importantly, it can load legacy Kurzweil .K files from the K2000, K2500 and K2600 keyboards. This opens up a whole new world of sonic possibilities; users can now combine the PC3K's unmatched Dynamic V.A.S.T. synthesis engine with the staggering library of K Series samples generated by users and developers alike for over 15 years.

Along with K Series samples, the PC3K will support the importing of most K Series keymaps, programs and setups, providing seamless integration for existing K series customers and an enticingly large collection of sounds for new Kurzweil users to explore. From Broadway performers and high profile pop stars to working players, the PC3K will allow musicians who've relied on Kurzweil for years to continue using their sounds with the next generation of our technology, without having to start over from scratch.

Mike Papa, Kurzweil National Sales Manager for American Music and Sound, couldn't be more thrilled. "This is the breakthrough the industry has been waiting for - the added value of 18 years' worth of K Series sound development is simply immeasurable. It's mind-blowing to think that artists can continue to build upon the body of work they've been creating for just under two decades, when most other manufacturers require users to re-invent the wheel each time a new platform is introduced."

In addition to the ability to load samples, the PC3K offers basic sample editing and full keymap editing. Of course, all of the features and presets that made the PC3 so popular are present as well; anti-aliasing VA oscillators, improved KB3 Mode, Classic Keys, Orchestral and String Sections sound sets, the renowned Kurzweil Grand Piano, Cascade Mode, 16 independent Riffs and arpeggiators, Song Mode and QA mode, unparalleled MIDI control, and the list goes on.

Another major improvement added to the PC3K is the inclusion of a USB host port to support the use of thumb-drives for data loading and storage as well as OS updates."

------- END of Press Release -------

You might be wondering why only 128M. Gregory wrote in with a link to a post by a Dave Weiser of Kurzweil on the sonikmatter forum here. After a little joking on page 3 Dave replies to someone asking the question with the following:

"It's much easier to provide larger sample memory in a system that's less complex than ours.

Consider this - as Keyboard Magazine described, the impetus for this product (or at least a major part of it) was the request from Andrew Lloyd Weber's group for a K26 replacement for their upcoming sequel to Phantom.

Their keyboard guy/orchestrator told me that they TRIED to use other products - the Fantom, the Motif, the Receptor.... but nothing provided the depth and flexibility of features found in the K26 and PC3K. You just can't do the same kind of detailed programming on those other products that you can do on a Kurz. Weber's request proves this more than anything I can say.

The point of this product was to get a K26 replacement out the door as quickly as possible, without causing delays to the other projects that we have coming in the next 1-2 years.

Note that I refer to other projects that are coming next year and the year after, and so on...

The PC3K is not the last board we [will] ever make.

For now, just try to think of our sample memory vs our competitors' like human years vs dog years! :P

And remember... ours is non-volatile - that was more of a priority for this product than memory size."

You can see the thread via the link above for a relatively positive reaction to this decision. Some additional notes from Dave on the thread:

"Some more info.....

No upgrade for the PC3 unfortunately.
The PC3 and its hardware are two years old - the PC3K required some changes.
That's just how it had to be.

Like I had said many times before, the PC3 was not the last keyboard we were going to make.

Compatibility with K samples will be %100.
Compatibility with K programs will be more like 80%, since there are some DSP algs and samples in the K that the PC3 doesn't have.

We will be recommending the Chicken Systems translator to allow the use of other formats.

The PC3K will have wooden end-caps - our distributors are thrilled about this.

We're hoping that the non-volatile aspect of the flash memory will really be a plus for live players.

And like I've said about the PC3..... the PC3K will not be the last keyboard we develop.
We've got a long range plan in place now with more cool products coming over the next few years in a number of different price ranges. The PC3K is just the latest step as we continue to grow."

followed by:

"Hoping to have this released by March.
Could be sooner, could be later.... I'll post when I have better info.

PC3K will be 100% compatible with PC3 files.

I believe that .K26 programs loaded into a PC3K can be saved as a .PC3 file and loaded into a PC3 - but you will not be able to load samples EVER into a PC3, just programs.

MSRP for the 88 should be around $4K US - the street price will be a good bit lower, probably mid 3's.

Actions - same as PC3 line:
61 note TP9
76 note TP8 semi-weighted
88 note TP40L hammer-weighted"

Open Sound Control (OSC) for Kyma

"Bidirectional communication between Kyma, iPad, Lemur, and other OSC-enabled devices & software

CHAMPAIGN IL-March 2, 2010-Symbolic Sound Corporation has expanded the list of real-time controllers and software that can communicate with its Kyma sound design environment by adding support for Open Sound Control (OSC) to its Paca(rana) sound engine.

By connecting a Paca or Pacarana to the Ethernet, sound designers, musicians, and researchers using Kyma on Windows or Macintosh computers can establish bi-directional communication with OSC-enabled devices and software on the network to control parameters of Kyma sound synthesis and processing algorithms. Open Sound Control is an open communications protocol that delivers higher speeds, greater resolution, and more flexibility than is afforded by the standard MIDI protocol. (For a partial list of software and hardware currently supporting the OSC protocol, please see http://opensoundcontrol.org/implementations).

Doug Kraul, CEO of Harmony Systems, Inc. is enthusiastic about Kyma's new OSC technology. "OSC is a brilliant addition to the already stellar Kyma sound design workstation", said Kraul. "It immediately enables exciting new ways to use Kyma on stage or in the studio. But the true impact of this forward looking technology is the new, innovative controllers and applications that OSC makes possible for the Kyma platform".

Plus Bidirectional MIDI Streams Over OSC
Don't have any OSC-enabled devices or software yet? Not to worry! You, too, can benefit from the faster speeds, higher resolution, and reduced cable-count of OSC by using Symbolic Sound's protocol for sending bi-directional MIDI streams over OSC. Symbolic Sound is happy to announce that several third-party development partners are concurrently announcing new software that supports bi-directional communication with Kyma over OSC:

OSCulator: Known as the Rosetta Stone of music controllers, Camille Troillard's Mac OS X application OSCulator (http://osculator.net) is already familiar to Kyma users who utilize it for sending individual MIDI controls, OSC, and HID control data over FireWire to Kyma. Now, in OSCulator 2.9.2, you can also send OSC messages directly to the Paca(rana) over the network. OSCulator 2.9.2 also implements Symbolic Sound's Bi-Directional-MIDI-streams-over-OSC protocol, enabling you to send streams of MIDI events from your software directly to Kyma without need for a MIDI interface on your computer and without having to map each controller individually in OSCulator.

vM2 and PacaMidi: Harmony Systems, Inc. is offering two new Mac OS X applications in its Delora product line, vM2 and PacaMidi, that incorporate Kyma's new "MIDI-over-OSC" technology to further enhance and facilitate real-time interaction with Kyma. vM2, a "virtual MotorMix", enables JazzMutant Lemur owners to enjoy automatic, fully integrated tactile control over Kyma's Virtual Control Surface. Recently updated to include several exciting new features, vM2 2.0 employs "MIDI-over-OSC" to eliminate the complication of physical MIDI cables and interfaces. PacaMidi, Harmony's newest product, uses "MIDI-over-OSC" to create a "virtual MIDI interface and patchbay" that adds three merged MIDI inputs and one MIDI output to a Paca(rana). This expands Kyma's connectivity options, while saving you the expense and complexity of using physical MIDI interfaces, hardware mergers, and numerous cables. For more information see http://www.delora.com.

Max & M4L: If you are one of the many artists using Kyma in conjunction with Ableton's Live and/or Cycling74's Max, you'll be happy to hear that Andrew Capon has written a Max external for bidirectional MIDI communication over OSC that works with both Max and Max For Live. For more details, please see: http://www.symbolicsound.com/Learn/AndyCaponMaxExternalOSC

For software and hardware developers
Starting from the Open Sound Control definition of a MIDI data type, Symbolic Sound has published additional details that make it possible to define a bidirectional stream of MIDI events sent as OSC messages over a network. Software and hardware developers planning to add MIDI-over-OSC capabilities to their applications or devices are invited to utilize this protocol to ensure compatibility with Kyma and Symbolic Sound's development partners: http://www.symbolicsound.com/Learn/BidirectionalMIDIStreamsOverOSC.

For developers utilizing pure OSC who would like to ensure compatibility with Kyma, please see:
http://www.symbolicsound.com/Learn/OSCSoftwareDevelopers

Who can use OSC with Kyma?
Anyone using Kyma on a Windows or Macintosh computer with either the Paca or Pacarana sound engine can utilize the new OSC features.

Sound artists will find this new feature of interest primarily due to the new opportunities it affords for controlling Kyma using OSC-enabled software running on devices such as the newly announced Apple iPad (and compatible iPhone and iPod Touch), the award-winning JazzMutant Lemur multi-touch surface, and numerous other OSC controllers and software.

This new feature may also be of particular interest to research labs and researchers developing data-driven virtual environments. Using the Open Sound Control protocol, researchers can write their own software for updating sound parameters while running experiments or for streaming data from networked computers to the Paca(rana) to update sound synthesis parameters in real time in response to external controllers, experimentally generated data, streams of data from remote sensors, or synthetically generated data based on computer models.

Pricing & Availability
OSC-enabled Kyma X.74 is a free software update for registered Kyma X owners. OSC communication requires the Paca or Pacarana sound engine. Kyma X.74 also comes with additional features, including an 11-times speedup in the Virtual Control Surface, support for the MOTU UltraLite Hybrid mk3, TC Electronic Impact Twin, and Prism Audio Orpheus converters, track-pad compatible menus, refinements to the Tau resynthesis, and more.

Symbolic Sound's innovative Kyma X environment features a unique set of sound synthesis and processing algorithms and a powerful way to easily re-combine these algorithms to create sounds that have never been heard before."

NLC Cellular Automata sequencer with 200e

Published on Nov 15, 2013 DJjondent·211 videos

Update: one more video below.

"Testing out a new sequencer.

Quite unlike anything I have ever seen and lots of fun.
It's based upon the principles of Cellular Automata (CA).
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Elementa...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular...

There are basically 6 cells/ sequencers. They produce 18 different CV patterns that can be simple or very
complex.
The cells can either be isolated or they can be made to affect their neighbouring cells/sequencers.
You can do this by patching from one into the other/s.
CVs from each neighbourhood can be summed or subtracted from others.

Here the 6 sequencers are all synced with one clock produced by the Buchla 281e.

This patching between the 6 sequencers makes very complex & evolving patterns possible .....
according to the rules of CA.
And you are outputting these patterns as gates (24 of them) and CVs.

The 24 gates are awesome to trigger envelope Generators, drums, etc.
They can also be used to clock other neighbourhoods.

Morton Subotnick and the Buchla 100

video upload by Library of Congress

"Composer and electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick offers some background and insights into his work with the famed Buchla 100, which he used to create the genre-defining album "Silver Apples of the Moon." Recently restored, Subotnick's original Buchla 100 will be on display and some of its many possible sounds demonstrated by the members of the MEMS Project. The Buchla 100 was restored as part of a broader "knowledge exchange and innovation funding" project funded by University College London. This was a collaboration between Andrew Northrop (film and media technician at the Slade School of Fine Art), the Library of Congress and the MEMS Project (Chip Flynn and Mark Milanovich). This project saw the repair of the Buchla 100 as an opportunity to extensively research and document the unique and historic equipment, with high resolution photographs of each module and a short documentary created as part of its output. The repair was carried out in March of 2024.
