Excerpt from Wikipedia on ambient music:
As a genre, ambient focuses on creating a mood or atmosphere through synthesizers and timbral qualities. It often lacks the presence of any net composition, beat, or structured melody. Due to its relatively open style, ambient music often takes influences from many other genres, ranging from house, dub, industrial and new age, amongst several others. Since it is a relatively ambiguous term, ambient has no distinct characteristics, and its style can vary a great deal. In essence, it is a term to describe any form of electronic music which puts an emphasis on tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. Ambient music is often highly conceptual and experimental in style, while it is said to evoke an "atmospheric", "visual" or "unobtrusive" quality.

Excepts from Wikipedia on space music:
Space music, also called spacemusic, is an umbrella term, synonymous with a segment of New Age Music and Ambient Music.[citation needed] It has also been associated with preceding styles of relaxing music such as lounge music, easy-listening, and elevator music... space music can evoke a "continuum of spatial imagery and emotion,"[11] which can be beneficial for introspection, and for developing, through a practice of deep listening, an awareness of the spatiality of sound phenomenon. This type of psychonautic listening can produce a subtle trance-like state in certain individuals which can in turn lead to sensations of flying, floating, cruising, gliding, or hovering... space music is used by some individuals for both background enhancement and foreground listening, often with headphones, to enable states of relaxation, contemplation, inspiration, and generally peaceful expansive moods; it may promote health through relaxation, atmospherics for bodywork therapies, and effectiveness of meditation. Space music appears in many film soundtracks and is commonly played in planetariums."

Alesis Andromeda Sounds - Part 3 - Best Pad Machine?

video upload by Friendly Noise

Friendly Noise Alesis Andromeda posts

"Introduced in 2000, the Alesis A6 Andromeda was a real miracle in a music world without modern analog polysynths. All big polyphonic names were no longer in production and only available in the used or vintage market. Some loved the Andromeda, some hated it, most simply didn’t come to know it because of the Alesis name and the lack of music hits featuring this powerful polysynth. The Andromeda can be described equally as a polyphonic instrument and as a polyphonic modular synthesizer. That´s how complex or deep it can be.

The sounds are illustrated with pictures of my own Andromeda. There is no video, because those are old recordings, made long time ago before I started recording videos. The purpose of the recordings was exclusively for personal use, a way to remember sounds I liked. Some recordings may still be useful today in order to get familiar with the sound of the instruments. Some sounds use the internal effects, some use external processing.

TB MIDI Stuff Andromeda Editor V1 Now Available

via Boele: "As of today the first version of the iPad editor for the Andromeda A6 synthesizer is available. The editor captures all sound editing parameters on the Andromeda, spread out over 102 pages with a combined mix of NRPN and system exclusive messages. Its focus has been on sound design, so it is not a librarian (yet). That might or might not change in the future.

The editor is free, however the template it needs to run in "TB MIDI Stuff", a MIDI controller app for the iPad which costs 4,99 $ / 4,49 €. The app is totally worth the money since it's developer, Fabien Manchec, helped a lot in the background to make this Andromeda editor possible.
Besides running this Andromeda Editor, you can use the app also to build your own MIDI control templates or use already made templates by others.
I would appreciate it a lot if you give the app a nice rating/review in iTunes as a thank you to him!

The download link will give you a zipped file which after unpacking leaves you with two files: the actual editor and a Read Me text file. I suggest you first read the Read Me text file! :-)

I would appreciate it a lot when users mail me with bug reports, ideas and suggestions: scd@synthmusic.info.

I will use the forum on electro-music.com for discussions about the editor and the Andromeda.
http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-90.html [direct link to editor thread here]
Update: direct link to the editor download here.

For me personally, sound design on the Andromeda changed completely: to have a better oversight of all the functions and a WAY better interface (specially concerning the knob value resolution) makes the Andromeda like a complete new synthesizer for me.
Yes, the thing has a few bugs, yes, even with the editor it still is a complex synth, but oh it can be *so* rewarding. And in a way it is a 16 voice polyphonic analog modular. With patch memory! That's pretty unique.

Enjoy!

elmacaco on the Alesis A6 Andromeda

elmacaco posted the following on AH. I asked him if it would be alright to put this up here and he gave me the a ok. As an A6 owner myself, I have to agree with his assessment. What's interesting is the behavior of the envelopes always stood out to me as being less direct compared to my other synths. I never thought about how the range for each step might be the reason. The A6 is an incredibly deep synth. That said, here are some words from elmacaco.

"I have to say, I love my Andromeda. I didn't like it when I first tried it in the store, but unseen forces brought it to my attention and about a year and a half ago I got one. It's been my main synth since then, never really messed with the presets, always making sounds on it. The first couple of months I would get lost in playing it and not record much, same thing happened with my wurlitzer, which is a good sign. It has such flexibility that it even can fix my modular jones most of the time (and I have a modular for that).

I think what throws a lot of people is that with it, you have to think about more than with the classics. The range of the controls is huge, and that changes a lot for most people. This is particularly true with the envelopes. A pot that goes from zero to 10 seconds has a different feel than one that goes from 2 seconds to 10 minutes, and can make it less imediate. Envelopes are usually an aspect that you don't have to think too much about, but with the Andromeda it becomes more complicated, which is a double edged sword, and one aspect i don't like so much, I wish I could limit those controls to a more usable range for me. Same with the mixer levels, once you get a bit of a handle on it it becomes part of the process, but it is none the less an extended process, which won't be to the liking of many people.

As for the comparion to older polies, well, they all have something, the andromeda is much more broad, so t can be a lot of things, but it wont be breezy to get it like them, but there is more. I remember after a year of having one I would play P5's and memorymoogs at friends houses, which i love in so many ways, but I would be locked into some avenues that used to seem broad but now I see as rather narrow.

The sound of those synths can make you need a variety of synths, to get out of it, but the Andromeda has a way of taking over, other synths will sound better in some places, but head to head, unless that is something you always need, the Andromeda can cover that territory pretty well. Which makes comparisons difficult, because it can more easily cover all your bases than any other synth. I've only recently began to mess with my xpander again, since the A6 can just take over. I have synths I prefer for bass, but I can get something great out of the Andromeda so staying in front of it can be very appealing. I remember thinking the osc tone was better on the roland mono's, then I tried to match them, and I actually matched them closer than i have matched anything else simply by filtering them imperceptively, remember the moog filter on the Andromeda goes up to 40,000Hz, drop it to 20k or 18k, and the high end sheen is gone but is still sounds like a raw waveform, I was pretty astounded at what I didn't know, and that happens a lot.

Realisticly speaking, even if you have a bunch of other synths, the Andromeda can satisfy the needs of a broad range of synthesists regardless of what they are, better than any other analog poly can. Just an andromeda for music means so many more possibilities than just a JP-8, or just a Memory Moog.

Just the multitimbrality coupled with such a deep engine alone puts it into a class of its own. But it will require more thought, it's one of the synths that will make you feel like you are not the bad ass synthesist you think you are, whereas sitting in front of a Jupiter-8, Prophet 5, CS-80, or memorymoog, a good working knowledge of synthesis is enough to explore all the dimentions of it infinitely. Not everybody likes that experience, kinda like how serge and buchla can be like learning a new language and force you out of your comfort zone. The Andromeda can make you feel like a novice again, I still get the sense that I won't ever fully grasp all its features in decades, but what I do grasp gives back in spades."

Sequencer & Arpeggiator Screens for Upcoming Andromeda A6 Editor

Follow-up to this post. Below is an update on the sequencer & arpeggiator sections via scd on electro-music.com.  The editor is nearing completion and is expected to be available next week.  This editor is extensive.  It's incredible how much it will open up and bring a fresh new approach to editing the A6.

"The step sequencer is captured in two pages as you can see. The arpeggiator in one page in the editor.

The first stepsequencer page is a good example to explain the building blocks of the editor:

- sliders: those are simple to understand. Double tapping on them brings up a jogwheel for fine tuning by the way, but the sliders already are a huge improvement over the Andromeda knobs
- switches (the ones with the red LED): for on/off functions.
- rectangles with rounded edges: those are always popup menus. I used them for parameters with more than 2 choices. On the step sequencer pages those are the note selection, number of steps,
- small boxes with a "m" inside: these will always bring you to a modulation page. There are 47 modulation pages. Each modulation slot that has the list of 79 modulation sources has its own page. With big knobs. On those modulation pages you can always go back to the page where you pressed the "m".
- little dots (like the one in the upper left corner above the clock rate slider) will be visible throughout the editor, indicating that that parameter is a modulation destination in one of the 47 mod pages.
You wll be amazed how many parameters are a modulation destination on the Andromeda!

The step sequencer has a problem that is not solvable as far as I know at this moment. The problem is in the "switch" between the first 8 steps and the last 8 steps (plus accompanying parameters): there is no way to tell the Andromeda "go to the first" or "go to the second" LCD screen (plus accompanying parameters).
The one you are looking at on the hardware is the one that should be on your iPad screen: you have to make them the same on the Andromeda. The button to select the first or last page is the button that is used to switch through the 16 steps on the Andromeda. The only way to tell the Andromeda to be on the fist page is to switch the synth off and on...
Well, something to think about when working with it. In the editor you can switch between the LCD screen for steps 1-8 and 9-16 by pressing the blue triangle in step sequencer page 1 on the iPad (it is simply forwarding 8 steps in the background). But you have to check on the Andro if it is the same there.

The same problem happens with the selection of the four step parameters: there is no way to tell the andro to start on one of them (note, velo, gate, step). You can only walk through them...

Furthermore there are parameters that do not work correctly or do not work at all. I will post about that later.

But I can tell from own experience that the step sequencer becomes a lot easier and thus more fun to handle with the iPad!

Another (known) bug is the fact that you can not use the hold pedal for holding the step sequence: sooner or later that gives hanging notes unfortunately. Be aware of that.

More later.

Boele"

Sota Fujimori

via Miles:
"Sota Fujimori, an artist affiliated with Konami's Dance Dance Revolution and Beatmania IIDX series' recently announced the release of his first album [there are some studio shots at the link also featured in the second video below].

In his music, you might notice he's not afraid to just put synths all over the place, he even has a track called 100% minimoo-G - lots of fun.

Beatmania IIDX [last video below] is supposed to be a DJ simulator, with an interface of 7 buttons resembling a keyboard and a turntable, but I'd say it's really more of an MPC equivalent of Guitar Hero (though it's much older than Guitar Hero). Notes scroll down the screen and you hit the buttons or spin the turntable accordingly, and for each press or spin, a sample will trigger so you're actually sort of performing the song. The game has a really steep difficulty curve, with the hardest songs having upwards of 2000 "notes" over the course of about two minutes."

Controlling an Andromeda A6 with a Steiner EVI Breath Controller

Andromeda Filter driven through CV input by Steiner EVI

"Steiner EVI used as breath controller through CV to modulate Andromeda A6 filters. Multi tonguing and human voice growling near last half to show some exaggerated modulation and possibilities."

via Infrablue on electro-music.com:

"Some real time playing around with CV input using a Steiner EVI as a breath control source. Notes and pitch bend played on Andromeda's keyboard.

All the modulation of volume, tone and filters are done in real time with the breath control through CV input by normal blowing as well as humming with my own voice into the EVI, multi tonguing and pallet fluttering into the EVI. Sound its self is from the Andromeda VCO's etc.

A Yamaha BC can do this stuff as well but it would need to be converted to CV instead of midi.

The playing is a little clumsy and also exaggerated to show the modulation... For most of the patches here, I usually like less resonance on a melodic line but these demonstrate the CV quite well.

Near the last half the resonance and growling grow progressively more extreme for demonstration. There are about 4 different patches throughout.

I was up all night excitedly playing around with the CV input... glad I finally got around to trying it! So happy to finally get breath control going on an Andromeda!

And here are a few tracks from about 17 years ago with melodies done on that same EVI using it's own analog sound module to compare. (Initial flute sound is EVI playing VL70-m module in a duet with an analog EVI square wave.)

Handmade Music Austin

via Bleep Labs:

"4ms Pedals, Eric archer, and Dr. Bleep are proud to announce Handmade Music Austin! Starting October 13th at Salvage Vanguard Theater in collaboration with CotFG, we will be offering monthly workshops in they style of Handmade Music.

We’ll have free soldering, bending and diy synth classes, as well as workshops to build our forthcoming Andromeda Space Rocker kits. Early sign-ups for classes will start soon so stay tuned!"

The following are a couple of videos of kits in development.
The mixer has the four tiny drum machines previously posted running through it.

Mini 4ch mixer amp

Mini 4ch mixer amp from EA78751 on Vimeo.

"Prototype 4ch powered "pocket mixer" blowin out analog beats thru a bare 12" speaker.

This jam is crying for Gakken SX-150.

Pocket mixer: 2.8W service into 4 ohms w/ soft clip. 4 C-cell batteries. Connects to any external speaker with binding post terminals."

Autonomous Bassline Generator

YouTube via 4mspedals

"The Autonomous Bassline Generator creates deterministic bassline patterns in a sci-fi retro sound by generating melodies on the fly, based on a knob. It's just an AVR (attiny44) chip doing all the work, plus an opamp to act as the filter (photocell). The blue button is Tap Tempo, or if you hold it down for 1 second, it syncs up to the pulses on the IR receiver (this lets you beat-sync multiple Andromeda Space Rocker modules). The red button lets you edit a single note in the melody. Pulse-width modulation is currently pre-set to a certain envelope, but that will become user-controllable soon!

Part of the "Andromeda Space Rockers" series of modules, see www.ericarcher.net for drum modules.

The 6-pin header board dangling to the right is an ISP header. Totally hackable!"

ALESIS ANDROMEDA A6 - Ambient Chillout Jam (Step Sequencer)

video upload by synth4ever

"Alesis Andromeda A6 synth demo featuring an ambient chillout jam using the on-board step sequencer. The Alesis Andromeda is a very powerful analog synthesizer and the 16-step sequencer allows for intricate pattern building and layering, as it can be triggered per key to create different timings and offsets.

In this ambient chillout music piece I showcase the Alesis Andromeda A6's step sequencer and some interesting timbres via the dual filter setup, LFOs and delay effects. The music uses a repeating motif to showcase these aspects. Hope you enjoy the demo and jam."

Ralph Lundsten - Worlds First Polyphonic Sequencer and the Sexophone?

This one in via Magnus.

"Ralph Lundsten, 70 years old, started his electronic music studio in 1959. He lives in a pink house,a very pink house, in the Stockholm archipelago where he has his studio Andromeda. In the mid sixties he collaborated with a Finnish engineer, Erkki Kuriniemi, and built what probably was the worlds first polyhonic synthesizer with a sequencer. The Andromatic [pictured below]. It had 10 tone generators, some filters, and modulators. All analog. Erkki also built the Dimi-O in 1970 or 71. A synth with a tv camera where you played the music in the air,so to speak. This instruments made it possible to experiment vith interactive video techniques, e.g. allowing a dancer to create sound by his/her movements. He also built the Dimi-S. Dimi-S or "Sexophone" (Ralph Lundsten refers to this as the "Lovemachine") was a fun instrument for four players. Handcuffs and wires connected the players to the electronic unit, which measured the electrical resistance between all six pairs. When two people touched each other repeatedly, a sequence of musical tones were heard. With increasing skin moisture and contact area, the intensity of the music increased. All about the Andromatic and Dimi series here (pdf). Ralph Lundsten's site with pictures and VR panoramas of his house and studio here. Unfortunatley it is in Swedish but check the third and fourth link, Frankenburg, and Ralphs hus Andromeda studio. He still has the Andromatic in there as far as i can tell. Lower left in the left rack [pictured above]."

The Andromatic

Via the Andromatic and Demi Series pdf:

"In 1961 or 1962 I was invited by prof. Erik Tawaststjerna to develop the electronic music studio for the Institute of Musicology, University of Helsinki. Erik Tawaststjerna, the late professor of musicology, is perhaps best known for his extensive and definite biography of Jean Sibelius."

"I began to construct a modular synthesizer, after Moog brochures and transistor circuit manuals. It was to consist of a Generator Unit, a Filter Unit, and a Mixer, all built into a sound studio console. In it, I tried to experiment with every possible analog and digital sound processing circuit. Integrated circuits were not yet available (all early production went into military and space applications). But Philips made a set of epoxy encapsulated logic circuits, gates and flip-flops. These were used in the Generator Unit [pictured below], both in the audio range (square wave) and as digital control signals, all freely programmable with a 500-point pin crossbar matrix."

Alesis Andromeda A6 Editor for iPad

Boele Gerkes aka SCD is working on an iPad editor for the Alesis Andromeda. Some details via this thread on electro-music.com:

"Would anyone be interested in that? I am working on one for myself for quite some time now, and it really changed the great synth into a GREAT synth
If there are enough interested people I might consider a (not free, but cheap) public release to earn a little back for the many many hours I have put into it.

It is an editor that uses mixed NRPNs and Sysex messages (that was quite a trip by the way, to "back engineer" how things are done on the Andro) and probably will capture each and every parameter that has to do with sound editing (which are a lot as you all know) and some global stuff.

My main problem with the A6 interface is the tiny LCD in combination with the *way* to sensitive knobs... I *hate* that really on the Andro. But I *love* the character of this synth and possibilities. That's why I started this for my own pleasure.

This editor has for instance have sliders and knobs with which you can change values much more more comfortably than on the A6 itself.
Some parameters (like the level knobs in the 47 modulation pages) wil even have a knob and two sliders for the same parameter, so you can choose with which resolution you want to change the values. It makes sound design SO much easier!
For instance, try to add a little pitch modulation to an oscillator with an LFO... you'll get the idea.

Touching a knob on the iPad will call up the appropriate LCD screen on the Andro.

I am almost done with all synth engine parameters, except for the digital FXs. Those will all get an iPad page of there own.

It is builded up out of pages with a navigation bar at the bottom to reach the various sections.
This is the list of iPad screens that are dedicated to a part:

Modulations (with 47 sub pages for the 47 mod slots on the Andromeda)
Oscillator 1 (with all parameters on one page, including links to the mod pages)
Oscillator 2 (like Osc1)
Pre-Mixer
Filter
Post Mixer
Envelope 1 (with 1 sub page for Looping and Dynamics parameters)
Envelope 2 (with 1 sub page for Looping and Dynamics parameters)
Envelope 3 (with 1 sub page for Looping and Dynamics parameters)
LFO1
LFO2
LFO3
S+H
Effects (with 29 sub pages for each digital effect)
Arpeggiator
Sequencer
Clock
Global (to be determined what will be in there: at least the CRoutes stuff, and the Tracking Generator, plus the Portamento, patch select and some more)

The number of pages will run into the 100+ But navigation will be easy and quick.

What this editor is NOT:
- It's *not* a Librarian and it will not become one.

What this editor is/has:
– a *very* handy tool to design sounds on the Andro! Trust me. It has become a completely new synth to me, since working with it.
- an editor that captures *every* sound editing parameter of the Andro that has a NRPN/sysex control attached (unless a bug prevents one. There are a few on the Andro, but not many).
- a "fix" for the 50% PW bug (a button sets it for you to 52%)
- controls that do right to the values you want to fine tune
- bi-directional (but some restrictions, certainly when using WIFI, due to an Apple bug)

And it is not ready yet, so it will take me some more months probably. I will post some screen shots in the near future."
