Arp Tweaking 1: Moog Minitaur analogue synthesizer (dreamsofwires)

Published on Jun 7, 2014 DreamsOfWires·31 videos

"Moog Minitaur, Mutable Instruments 'Midipal' providing the arp in 'Random' mode.
This is the first in a series of old recordings (and potentially very boring to watch videos) where I was messing around on various synths with the aid of an arpeggiator and recorded the results. It's perhaps just a 'niche' thing, but as always, I'm uploading them on an 'in case anyone is interested' basis, even if they only to serve as an example of the sounds that can be had from these instruments.

NOTE: If you want a very small, flexible MIDI arp generator, SH101-style sequencer, MIDI keyboard splitter, and lots besides, check out the Midipal, I think it's excellent."

Arp Tweaking 2: Roland SH-1 analogue/analog synthesizer (dreamsofwires)

Published on Jun 15, 2014 DreamsOfWires·32 videos

"Part 2 of my old arp-tweaking recordings, although this one is actually a step-sequencer pattern, but the same idea. I used the excellent Mutable Instruments Midipal for the pattern (it has an SH101-style step sequencer function). Of all the analogues I've had/used the Roland SH-1 is definitely my favourite in terms of sound, followed my the Micromoog.
This is an old recording and I can't remember what how/what I recorded it with, sorry. There's no video because I didn't have one at the time, and it'd be rather boring to watch anyway."

Arp Tweaking 3: Doepfer Dark Energy (with Moog Slim Phatty & Minitaur) by dreamsofwires

Published on Jun 17, 2014 DreamsOfWires·32 videos

"The 3rd arp tweaking video, this time the Doepfer Dark Energy, using it's own built-in arpeggiator. Yet again, this is an old recording, which originally had some Micromoog parts accompanying it, but they were messy, so I re-recorded some of them with the Moog Slim Phatty, except the bass section near the beginning, which is the Slim Phatty panned to the left, and the Minitaur panned to the right.
No MIDI sequencers were harmed during the making of this video, nor were any insects. All critters, including mechanical ones, were filmed by me from my home using a Canon 650d, footage of synths captured with a hacked Lumix GH2."

Arp Tweaking 4: Moog Minitaur (2nd video) analog/analogue synth

Published on Jun 24, 2014 DreamsOfWires·35 videos

"Another old recording using the Moog Minitaur with the Mutable Instruments Midipal's arpeggiator in random mode."

Arp Tweaking 5: Moog Slim Phatty analogue/analog synthesizer

Published on Jul 27, 2014 DreamsOfWires

"Moog Slim Phatty, powered by the random arpeggiator of the Mutable Instruments 'Midipal'. All sounds are by the Phatty. This was a totally off the cuff/make it up as you go along recording, so don't expect musical genius.

Video recorded with a Panasonic GH2 (hacked), Olympus 45mm f1.8 (synth shots), 14-42mm II kit lens (train footage)."

DreamsOfWires - watching the world go by (Nave & iPad)

DreamsOfWires - watching the world go by Pt1 (Nave - iPad)

Published on Jan 23, 2016 DreamsOfWires

iTunes: Nave - Waldorf Music

"Original, more minimalistic version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUVOK...
Another recording using sounds created in Nave, which were made from mundane household objects. I like this kind of synthesis; apart from the degree of involvement and personalization it allows in the sound creation process, just making music with anything laying around that is capable of making a noise is rather satisfying. This is partly because it negates the need for expensive gadgets (excluding the iPad), but also because it reminds me of the early pioneers of electronic music, such as the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and the way they produced other-worldly music using 'found sounds'. The only difference is that nowadays any idiot can do it, myself being a good example.
Musicians:
Piano - Wooden spoon hitting a glass bowl
Drone - Old computer fan
Recorded entirely within Nave over 2 tracks using it's built-in effects and 'Tape' recorder.
Video is of recent travels."

DreamsOfWires - watching the world go by Pt2 (Nave & iPad)

Published on Feb 2, 2016 DreamsOfWires

"Part 2 of 3. This is also two layers recorded entirely within Nave, but using Beatmaker 2's sequencer - I wanted to try to compose something note-by-note in Midi, like I did back in the early 2000's when I didn't even own a Midi keyboard, just a sequencer and some softsynths. It was slow-going back then.
The video is a continuation of the journey from Pt1; in this case some views of Newcastle and it's bridges.
All sounds created from scratch by me."

Part 3 to follow.

Published on Aug 25, 2018 DreamsOfWires

"My first day with the Korg Minilogue, so I thought I'd try re-recording a past upload with it (original version: [posted here]).
I was going to film it outside, but it's been raining for a few days. However, I did step outside with the camera after recording to film a huge huge swarm of crows that were passing by."

Dark Days & Old Ways - Ambient Analogue Synth Jam

Published on Dec 15, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Dark Analog Eurorack Modular Synth melodic jam, reflecting my mood at the moment - popularism, isolationism, and short-sightedness seem to rule the day politically, stuck in old ways of thinking, governed by self-serving liars, engineered by faceless multinational corporations, serving the privileged few at the expense of the many, and to top it off I just sugared my tea twice by accident! Dark days indeed.

Title inspired by my recent album (see Bandcamp below), improvised melodic phrases inspired by my recent video listed below.

Published on Dec 9, 2018 DreamsOfWires

"My first session using the Minibrute 2 with my Eurorack modular system, just a simple 70's-inspired thing. This is not an instructional video, just a musical session I enjoyed and decided to share. The Minibrute's sequencer is the backbone of the performance, with the AJH MiniMod modules providing additional sounds. Turn on subtitles for a few snippets of patch info. List of gear and effects used below.

DreamsOfWires - 'One Synth' album (all tracks recorded with a single synth)

Published on May 9, 2018

"Available here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com/...

All 7 tracks recorded using a single analog monosynth, 'One Synth' contains tracks from YouTube and a new, exclussive Volca Keys track only available here. Two tracks were re-mixed/effected, and all have much improved audio quality over the video versions, taken from the source recordings.
https://www.facebook.com/tomorrowthec...
https://www.patreon.com/dreamsofwires"

"7 tracks created using only 1 analog monosynth. 6 tracks are taken from the DreamsOfWires YouTube channel, whilst the Volca Keys track is a new composition created exclusively for this release. All tracks are taken from the original source files, and 2 ('Odyssey' & 'MiniMod') were completely remixed and re-effected.

I have tried to avoid tampering with these recordings too much, as they were created in a fairly organic, partly improvised, 'warts & all' manner, which is how I prefer to make music. This keeps it fresh and interesting for me, and retains more sincerity and authenticity than if I'd spent days on end swearing at it and sobbing into my coffee. For me, every piece of music is a work-in-progress, having an evolution or life of it's own, and so there is never a definitive version.

DreamsOfWires 'Lost soundtracks' Available now - Analog Synth Horror Music

DreamsOfWires

"8 tracks, all analogue synths, 6 recorded as live sessions, 2 early tracks re-mixed/re-recorded, inspired by some of the horror/sci-fi/dystopian/creepy movies of my youth.
Available here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com
See album description on Bandcamp for more details."

"A collection of recordings from the 'DreamsOfWires' YouTube channel inspired by various horror, sci-fi, or otherwise 'scary' movies I remember from my youth, and by the soundtracks of many, which were often low-budget, spartan scores performed on analogue synths, sometimes consisting of just one or two instruments or layers.

I thought it would be fun to see what simple compositions I could create with just two sounds, played in real-time and recorded as live sessions.

Tracks 1-6 were performed on an AJH Synth modular analogue synth, and all except track 5 were partly 'generative', using no sequencers, just combined modulation sources to generate rhythmic parts, and either a keyboard or pitch-controlling module to change notes, in order to create simple tunes. More details can be found in each track's description.

Tracks 7 & 8 were originally recorded in 2011, and in the conventional layering/overdubbing manner, but I located the original source files and re-mixed them, changing some of the sounds. These versions are exclussive to Bandcamp. More details can be found in the description of each track."

DreamsOfWires New album track demo version 'Things to come'

Published on Sep 22, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"An early jam/version of a track I was working on for the 'tomorrow the cure' album 'Grey Days & Old Ways': https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com/..., recorded/filmed a few days before the final album version. I changed a few things since this rendition.

About the album: I wanted to record a collection of past and new compositions in much the same way as I would perform them live - many of my favourite recordings of other artists are live versions; they have an organic and consistent, stripped-down quality to them that appeals to me. As a result, each track is recorded as a performance in real-time, with no overdubs. This limits what I can do by how many instruments I have available to me at any one time, and so everything you hear is created with a Eurorack modular synth and an old Roland SH-1. The Majority of sounds were created with the AJH Synth MiniMod system.

The past tracks included are some I've wanted to re-record for a long time as I'm particularly fond of them, and they haven't been released on any of my previous albums.

My sincerest thanks to all of you who have purchased my music in the past, or this album, and for your generosity - I'm struggling to fund the continuation/progression of what I do on this channel, so it is greatly appreciated."

Album track improvisation/performance (Eurorack Analog Jamuary)

Published on Jan 5, 2020 DreamsOfWires

"Something I'm working in for the next 'tomorrow the cure' album, just a rough, improvised, preliminary version, so it may change a lot, but this is my work flow nowadays. The album will be all live/real-time recordings, just like the last one.

LIVE SHOWS: I'll be performing a short live set at this year's Superbooth 20 in Berlin, in case anyone was thinking of going. It's a very big event with lots of vendors and new gear to drool over.

PATCH BREAKDOWN: All synth sounds are from an AJH Synth Eurorack Modular system, which is used here as a 2-voice instrument.

The drone sound is one VCO passing through the Wave Swarm, then into the Ring SM's mixer, where 2 sub-octaves and an upper octave are added from the Ring SM itself, plus pink noise from the Glide + Noise module. The combined output is passed through the Sonic XV filter, where the wave-shaping functionality is used to alter the timbre of the sound significantly, and the cutoff frequency is adjusted manually throughout the recording. The amount of noise at the Ring SM is also reduced early on, then increased at the end.

The lead sound is 2 VCO's (square waves with PWM), the pitch of one is being shifted down 2 octaves or up 9 notes at various points in the recording by the Precision Voltages module, which provides convenient, instant selection of chosen note intervals. The sound is then filtered by the Ladder Filter, and is also used for the 'arp' sequence in the final part of the performance. Throughout the performance the envelope's modulation of the filter is being manually tweaked.

MY MUSIC: My existing analog synth albums can be found here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com
GEAR USED: Recorded on an iPad using AUM, Dubstation2 delay, and ShimmerFX reverb. Video assembled on an iPad, which isn't easy, and lacks storage space, hence no additional footage as was common in my earlier videos. If or when I can get my MacBook repaired I'll return to making videos more similar to those I've made in the past. Fortunately my camera still works :/

Sounds of the Seventies Jam (full version) all-analogue Eurorack Modular

Published on Nov 5, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Live/real-time performance with a 70's-inspired Eurorack modular system, including AJH Synth modules based on a complete R.A.Moog era Minimoog and the 914 fixed filter bank from the Moog Model 55 modular synth. Turn on Subtitles for commentary.

I listen to a lot of so-called 'Berlin school' electronic music that featured these instruments, but I could never afford the originals, so having such a quality instrument in Eurorack format that's this close in terms of sound and technology is really special. This rig is closer to a Model 15 in terms of modules, but goes way beyond it in features and capabilities. The AJH Fixed Filter Bank 914 also has more functionality than its namesake, and my next video will spotlight this filtering monster, explaining a little more about what it does.

All modules are by AJH Synth, and I've also used their Precision Voltages, Ring SM, and Wave Swarm in this composition.

Sequences are driven by an Arturia Keystep, and overlaying notes played manually from a USB keyboard into an Expert Sleepers FH-2, then into the modular.

Recorded into AUM on an iPad, using Audio Damage Dubstation 2 delay and ShimmerFX reverb.

Eurorack Attenuation w/ AJH Synth CV Mix Offset VCA - Demo and Performance

DreamsOfWires

Part 1 here. Additional AJH Synth posts by DreamsOfWires here.

"Second part of an introduction to the modulation section of my AJH Synth Eurorack modular synth, followed by a performance. This time I'm focusing on attenuation with the CV Mix Offset VCA. In the video I'm demonstrating how I use it with an envelope generator and a modulation controller, but it can be equally useful when used with LFOs, or controlled by sequencers, or processing other control voltages. It's a Swiss army knife in 10hp.
The previous video covered the Dual LFO + VCA, and the next one will concentrate on the Sample Hold + Slew module.

I'm not signing in so often now - since recent YouTube changes the site isn't working properly on my iPad and PC, is a pain in the bum to use, and I no longer get notifications of new comments for some reason, so I might be slow to respond to comments.

Korg Monologue 'Modulations & Resonances' by DreamsOfWires

Published on Apr 22, 2018 DreamsOfWires

"Korg Monologue sounds featuring the use of modulation on the resonance and oscillator waveforms using the LFO and slider control. If you delve into the synth's settings you can apply the slider control to various different functions; for example, here I'm using it to add more resonance in some sounds.
The synth seems to be quite good at creepy soundtrack stuff, hence the footage of gnarly, deserted old streets. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop would have probably used one in the 70's when their Odyssey or EMS broke down :P
This will be the last of my Monologue videos, which I recorded before I sold it. If in the future I win the lottery of find myself a rich Mommy, then I might pick up another, but for now I need all the money I can get for other gear.

P.S. I don't provide synth presets/patches, sorry. Also, I don't make 'how to' videos or do gear reviews, and I can't possibly recommend which instrument you should buy, as it's entirely subject to personal taste. I just make the music I enjoy, using instruments I like, and hope that others will either enjoy it or be inspired to create. Thanks for your understanding and for listening."
