Loopop review: KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch - before you buy
Published on Apr 30, 2018 loopop
"KORG just released their version of Gadget for Nintendo’s Switch gaming console. Gadget for iOS and Mac are powerful workstations for music production and performance. The big question is, how well does Gadget translate to the world of console gaming? After reviewing it in depth, it seems Korg Gadget for Switch has a different goal in mind, at least in my opinion - certainly for this first version just released - and that goal is real-time, multi-person music creation and jamming.
To see if it accomplishes this goal, I tested it live with my daughter, and the result of our first jam session, for better or worse, is included in this clip.
Gadget contains 16 great core “gadgets”- synths and drum machines covering many forms of synthesis, and it sounds fantastic. You can build a song with multiple tracks (instruments) and scenes (e.g. intro, verse, chorus). Different scales, bar lengths and time signatures are supported, and there is copy/paste/undo functionality which means you won’t be wasting much time putting a track together.
The key differentiating feature as I mentioned above is its multiplayer capabilities. There are two multiplayer modes - one where up to four users all share the same screen and work on the same clip, gadget, mix or song at once, and a second split screen mode where each player gets a quarter of the screen to themselves. All players create the same song, but each can work on a different part, view or instrument, in their corner of the screen. You can’t switch between these modes mid song, which would be a nice future addition. An optional 5 minute timer mode helps keep you focused on finishing a track rather than just noodling…
All that said, if you’re looking for a direct port of the iOS version of Gadget for Switch you’re going to be disappointed. Gadget for Switch is a slimmed down version of its bigger siblings and is missing quite a few key features to be considered a complete digital audio workstation. I’m not sure if this lack of certain features is due to limitations of the Switch platform or just limitations of version 1.0, but things like connecting a USB or Bluetooth keyboard or controller, or audio or project export (aside from limited internal sharing), are just not available. If you want to export your song you’ll need to record it via the audio output or HDMI as I did in this clip.
Aside from the connectivity issues above, it seems like on the software side, this first version was optimized for a “TV mode” experience rather than handheld. Much of the touch screen doesn’t work where you’d expect it to - it’s completely inactive on the Song, Mixer and Clip/Piano roll screens, and only partially active in Gadget view. Hopefully this will be addressed in future updates. There are however some interesting motion play gesture controls that are shown in the clip.
So… what’s the bottom line? If you want to use Gadget on your own as music production digital audio workstation, with this first version of Gadget for Switch, you’re better off with their iOS or Mac versions.
Gadget for Switch is optimized for TV-mode using Switch controllers, with multiplayer gameplay in mind. If you’re looking for a fun experience creating songs with other people, Gadget for Switch is the best game in town."

KORG Officially Introduces the volca mix - ANALOGUE PERFORMANCE MIXER
Published on Jan 17, 2018 Korg
"An analogue performance mixer that completes your volca setup."
And a video from our new sponsor, Reverb.
Korg Volca Mix Analogue Performance Mixer | Reverb Demo Video
Published on Jan 17, 2018 Reverb
"Wondering how to flex your Korg muscles? Along with the release of its new Prologue polyphonic synthesizer, the company has announced the release of the Volca Mix, an “analogue performance mixer” that allows musicians to easily combine Volcas and other Korg instruments in live performance.
Buy on Reverb
Read more on Reverb
"volca mix is the long-awaited mixer for the volca series. The volca mix is a four-channel analogue performance mixer that lets you construct a live setup combining multiple volca units.

The volca mix will unlock the maximum potential of the volca series.
An analog mixer for performance.
The volca mix is a four-channel analog mixer with an intuitive interface and plenty of connectivity. It provides two mono inputs and one stereo input, perfect for connecting three volca units. The jacks are mini-jacks, allowing you to make connections with just one stereo mini-cable from the headphone out of each volca unit. The channel volumes use vertical faders that allow precise control. The gain can be boosted to adjust the mix balance, and mute buttons are also provided. Each channel is also equipped with a LO/HI CUT filter that lets you control the low and high frequency ranges with a single knob. The pristine, natural-sounding filters that you expect from analog gear give you complete control over the character of your sound.
Output and monitor capabilities for use on stage, plus stereo speakers for maximum portability.
The output section provides RCA stereo line outputs to ensure stable connection. There’s a master volume with LED VU meter for adjusting the output level, as well as a headphone output that can be used simultaneously with the line output, providing a reliable monitoring environment on stage. Speakers are also built-in for excellent portability. The stereo speakers are placed at both sides of the front, and while compact, deliver SPL levels that are even greater than the built-in speakers on previous volca units.
Powerful effects and control.
Powerful master chain.
The volca mix is equipped with master effects powered by all-analog circuitry. In addition to an expander that broadens a mono source into a stereo sound image, there’s a dynamic range compressor that compresses the high-frequency range according to level changes of the low-frequency region, as well as a side chain effect that’s indispensable for dance music. Use these to dynamically vary the mix, adding a professional feel to live performances with the volca.
Connect an external effect unit for further variety.
The volca mix provides a stereo mini-jack send out and AUX in jack, and send level knobs for each channel. This allows you to use it with an external effect unit in a send/return connection. When used in conjunction with a unit such as the mini kaoss pad 2S, you can also enhance your live performances using standard effects such as reverb, delay, filter, and break. The AUX in jack can also be used as a stereo input channel for a fourth volca unit, an iOS app, or any other gadget, instrument, or device.
As the master of your volca live setup.
The volca mix features an analog sync out jack that can easily be connected to many pieces of KORG gear for tempo sync, and also a play button and tempo knob to control that sync signal. By using the volca mix as the sync master device of your live setup, you can easily enhance your live performance, such as simultaneously playing sequences from multiple synced units, and combining mute and volume control to create performances that use your volca units in even more ingenious ways.
DC out lets you use three volca units simultaneously.
Three VOLCA DC OUT jacks are provided, and by connecting the included DC-DC cables you can supply power for up to three volca units. Even when using multiple volca units on stage, you won’t need to bother with adapters or bring another power strip; just concentrate on your performance with a streamlined setup and breakdown.
A rich variety of included accessories.
The volca mix comes with AC adapter, DC-DC cables, and audio cables included. Right out of the box, you’ll be ready to put together a complete volca live setup."

"slowly adding more midi controllers. Not too many though. Keep it simple.
Please subscribe/comment if you like this track
HOW I ARRANGE: After I've created a loop that I like I just launch/mute tracks and tweak parameters rather than consciously lay everything out. This way the whole process stays fun which for me is the key. I may do a more detailed tutorial on this.
With all the gear options out there I also like sticking with one program and Korg gadget is perfect for what I want to do. If you don't know what it is here is my own overview:
Korg gadget is a complete IPAD electronic music workstation - like a propellerhead's Reason for mobile.
To make music you just pick any of the following 'gadgets' from within the program and start composing:
Drum machines/Drum Samplers
London: drum sound module Gadget designed specifically for dance music but with the right FX can fit any style really. Has 8 Tracks.
Tokyo: 4 track analog-type drum sound module with lots of tweak potential. Sounds great with London.
Bilbao: One-shot sampler (up to 2 bar length samples but mainly aimed at drum hits) 16 tracks. Import your own sounds! Basic FX though
Abu Dhabi: 1 bar loop player. (Again import your own loops) Lots of glitch potential
.
Amsterdam: 4 slots for variety of drum hits and sound FX. Factory library only
Gladstone: 20 acoustic drum kits
Synths/pitched instruments
Chicago: think 303.
Kamata and Kingston: Chiptune
Darwin and Marseille: M1 and GM sound module
Glasgow: Synth strings and Triton sounds
Madrid: Real sounding acoustic and electric bass
Salzburg: Multi-sampled grand piano
Brussels & Miami: monophonic modern sounding bass/lead synths Can pump and bass wobble
Wolfsburg & Phoenix: Polyphonic synths (wolfsburg like a modern VST and phoenix like a prophet 5)
Berlin: Arp Odyssey
Dublin: Semi modular synth
Chiangmai: Bell type sounds
Helsinki: Absynth like ambient polyphonic synth
Montreal, Alexandria & Firenze: Real sounding electric piano and organs
Kiev: Vector synthesis.
Insert FX, comp and EQ on every track plus global reverb send. Independent MIDI channels on each track. IPAD AIR and above at least 20 tracks. Most of my songs use about 10.

Ideal for performance and music production, KORG Module is a high-quality sound module app for iPad that contains a sound library over 1 GB. If you have an external MIDI keyboard and an iPad, you can play studio-quality keyboard and grand piano sounds anywhere. You can also use the sounds of KORG Module for the KORG Gadget music production app.
*** Five dedicated sound engines containing powerful tone ***
KORG Module has five dedicated sound engines, providing a number of high-quality sounds that can be played back on your iPad using the "NATIVE ENGINE”. These engines feature technology that was developed for KORG's historic line of workstations and synthesizers including: Acoustic Piano, Electric Piano, Clav, Organ, and Multi. Each display has carefully selected parameters, making it convenient and easy to adjust the sounds.
*** Welcome to a new mobile world, where your iPad and a MIDI keyboard is all you need for a complete setup ***
Just connect an external MIDI keyboard to your iPad and launch the app to transform your iPad into a high-quality sound module. It's easy to set up and start playing immediately, whether you're in your room, a practice studio, or performing live. KORG Module adopts an open hardware philosophy that allows connection to any MIDI keyboard. In addition to using a KORG MIDI keyboard such as the taktile, microKEY (25-key), or nanoKEY2, you can also use other manufacturer's MIDI keyboards that can be connected to an iPad.
*** Mobile music production in tandem with KORG Gadget ***
You can also use the high-quality KORG Module sounds inside KORG Gadget, the mobile music production app. If you have KORG Module and KORG Gadget, the five tools Salzburg, Montreal, Alexandria, Firenze, and Glasgow are added inside, allowing access the same way as KORG Gadget. Whether for performance or for production, both of these apps deliver ultimate sound.
*** Convenient set list function with a PDF/image score viewer and music player ***
KORG Module provides functions you'll find convenient in any environment. The set list function provides unified management of all the settings a player needs; it lets you recall the sounds in the ideal order, view music notation, or hear a practice song. The score viewer can load and display an image or PDF file; eliminating the need to carry along a printed music score. You can use the internal camera of your iPad to record and view hand-written memos. You can use the music player to select and play a song from the library of the Music app. Since there's a tempo change function, you can slow down the tempo without changing the pitch.
*** Power-up even more with expansion sound libraries ***
While KORG Module provides a powerful collection of sounds even with its basic set, you can purchase expansion sound libraries to further extend its sonic scope. As the first round, we present two titles: the third-party mobile premium piano "Ivory Mobile Grand" from SYNTHOGY, and KORG's own vintage electric piano sound set "Wurley Electric Piano." Add sound libraries to enjoy an expanding world of mobile sound modules. The added sound libraries can be used with KORG Gadget as well."

Korg Gadget, '80s Themed demo (Berlin, Chicago, London, Chiangmai), by Jordan Passmore
Published on Jan 27, 2014 Jordan Passmore·69 videos
"This demo is of the Korg Gadget iPad app featuring 4-tracks all playing and sequenced from within Gadget itself. The 4 instruments are Chicago and Berlin monosynths (Chicago is doing the melody and Berlin the bassline), London doing the drums (most of the drums are from the DDD-1, a very underrated digital drum machine from the 80's that Korg has sampled and included within this app) and Chiangmai playing the digital-sounding chord stab. The window to the left should give you an idea of what I am doing on the iPad (tweaking and muting stuff live).
I should note there are some skips and pops here and there in the video. These hiccups occur on my iPad Mini only with Korg Gadget for some reason. I believe the demand this app puts on the processor is quite high. This should come as no surprise though as every single synth/drum machine they have packed into this app sounds fantastic."

The Teenage Engineering Op1 throws in some extra samples recorded from the radio, which I trigger live. The Roland Boutique JP08 and Microkorg are both played live, JP08 is played live via Novation Impulse 49. The Korg Minilogue and Roland JU-06 are both on sequencer duty.
All hardware is sequenced via Mod Step and audio multitracked in Auria Pro. This is truely pushing iPad to its limits."

"We own a hardware Korg Odyssey, and were very interested to hear what the new iOS app, ODYSSEi sounded like. The hardware has an iconic, unique sound that rivals many of the best synths, but when we heard this new iOS app worked with Korg's Midi iOS DAW Gadget, it became a must buy. Gadget quickly became a favorite mobile music making app for us here at Expanding Sound, with it's easy interface and great tones. The exporting of your performance to Ableton Live sets is a pretty key feature for making high quality jams on the go. We assumed that with this new apps capabilities and great tone, it would be fairly draining on your iPads processing power. So how did it hold up on an iPad mini 3? Check out our video and see! I whipped up a quick little sequence, for the purposes of testing the sounds and limitations that went along with the app.

"Just messing around with my new Korg Volca Sample, Bass and Keys..
Running all into a Tapco 100 mixer with Yamaha A3000 sampler on the fx send, just using its multi fx..
I use the Korg Gadget app on my iPad for the strings, and a bleepy break i drop in later..
It's all synced by the SyncKontrol app on my old iPhone 4s - which then outputs a clock to the Volcas and keeps in sync with the iPad via Ableton Link..
It's all live on the hardware, the computer's purpose is to record the audio..
An enjoyable experience to make music in this way and not the usual staring at Ableton Live :)"

"My second video of me messing around with my new Korg Volca Sample, Bass and Keys..
Running it all into a Tapco 100 mixer with Yamaha A3000 sampler on the fx send, just using its multi fx..
I use the Korg Gadget app on my iPad for a beat, and a patch on the Kiev the uses the old Korg M1 Universe sound.. that's gotta be one of my favorite sounds ever..
I also try to play a lead sound on the app.. it all started to remind me of Miami Vice/GTA 5/Hotline Miami music so i tried to find a sound that fitted.. it's still abit of a cheezy fun track more than anything... but i think a style i can work more on in the future :)
Everything is synced by the SyncKontrol app on my old iPhone 4s - which then outputs a clock to the Volcas and keeps in sync with the iPad via Ableton Link..
Hardware only, the computer is just recording the mixer output :)"
