video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Allen gives Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) a thorough tutorial on how to program and save his first patch on the ASM Hydrasynth.

The HYDRASYNTH Desktop / Rack has the same great sound engine as the HYDRASYNTH Keyboard. The sound engine is a sound designers dream synth as well as a performing musicians ideal. The sound engine is designed for maximum flexibility. At the same time, we designed the user interface in a way to allow you to edit the patch quickly with a minimal amount of paging and many workflow shortcuts.

Utilizing an advanced wavetable synthesis engine, 3 Oscillators, dual Wave Mutators and 2 filters that can be configured in series or parallel, the tone generating capabilities are unmatched.

Podcast 245: Matthew Allum (ALM/Busy Circuits)

Published on Sep 16, 2018 20Objects

"From the second I saw the Akemie's Castle module, I knew I'd want to talk to its developer, Matthew Allum. What a module - and what a name! I knew there had to be stories about what was going on. I've also notices that almost every case I'm seeing has a Pamela's Workout module. Matthew let me try out a few modules, and now I understand why these are so ubiquitous: it has so much functionality (presented in such a clear fashion) that it has become central to my patches. So now it all makes sense.

Talking with Matthew was a breeze - he's into his work, but he's also thoughtful about how he works, and the ideas that turn into his modules. He's got a lot of new work coming out, but he's also working on improving existing devices - and making modules for himself and his friends, too.

If you haven't checked out the ALM/Busy Circuits range yet, you can do so at Matthew's web site: http://busycircuits.com/. This was a fun chat - enjoy!

Thanks to Splice for their support of this podcast. You can help out the podcast by checking out our special link to their system, and or by using our code (MUSICARTTECH) to get a free month trial of their sample library offering. Help us out, and check out the cool collaboration tools that Splice provides!"

1. Øchd: Overview and Demo
Welcome to the Patchwerks video series! In this inaugural video of our series, our resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) demos the amazingly simple and musically powerful features from the new DivKid module øchd. Remember to like and subscribe, because we'll have more videos of great gear coming your way soon.

From DivKid:
This collaboration between DivKid and Instruo is a 4HP all analogue triangle LFO generator with 8 outputs. Each of the 8 outputs are free running and are musically tuned intervals, as opposed to synced or variable phase outputs from each other. A range of fast to slow outputs can be set to make any patch drift organically and beautifully, letting your modulation freely drift various parameters. There's a global rate control to go up into either lower audio rates on the fastest outputs, or glacially slow. A CV input with attenuverter allows for waveshaping via feedback patching, everything from log, lin or expo curves through to odd staircases waves and more. A negative voltage can reliably halt the circuit which gives 8 track and holds over the outputs.

2. Earthquaker Devices Afterneath in stereo!?
In this video we patch the Earthquaker Devices Reverb: Afterneath into the Make Noise Rosie to take advantage of the mono to stereo send. Doing this allows us to patch a second audio output from the reflect send into the right input of the stereo return giving us a stereo reverb effect.

From Earthquaker:
The Afterneath Eurorack Module brings the Otherworldly sounds from the effects pedal world right into your modular synthesizer with an expanded feature set. The Afterneath module features one main audio input, one main audio output, an audio send and return for the Reflect feedback path, and nine controls. Four of the parameters are controllable via CV, and each has been equipped with a dedicated attenuverter to process the incoming CV. The Afterneath module has a completely analog dry signal path and a totally digital wet signal path.

Moog Etherwave Theremin Is For You and Your Modular Synth

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) demonstrates the new Moog Etherwave Theremin along with a short tutorial on how to use it. After getting acquainted with Theremin Matthew demonstrates how to integrate the Theremin into a Eurorack setup.

Learn more about the Moog Etherwave Theremin here: https://bit.ly/MoogEth

For over 60 years, Moog theremins have captured the imagination of players and audiences alike. Most recently over the last two decades, Moog’s Etherwave Standard and Etherwave Plus have set the bar of performance theremin design. Now, the all-time highest selling theremin models get an update to become simply Etherwave Theremin.

With no reeds to blow, no keys to press, and no strings to pluck, the theremin defies all expectations of a musical instrument. It is instead played in a manner that seemingly conjures music from the ether, simply through the motion of the body when close to the instrument. Throughout history, performers have achieved unprecedented expression by mastering this unique connection between the hands, the body, the environment, and the instrument.

The theremin’s elegant simplicity and unparalleled expressivity fueled Bob Moog’s lifelong love affair with the instrument, from building his first theremin at age 14 and completing his final theremin design at age 70. Today, Etherwave Theremin carries on this legacy with a design that is refined for the modern theremin performer.

MOOG SOUND LAB (Moogfest Edition): Matthew Dear - Earthforms

Published on Oct 12, 2012 by MoogMusicInc

"Michigan based, Ghostly International co-founder and Moogfest alumni Matthew Dear visited the Moog Sound Lab where he completely deconstructed and then recreated the song "Earthforms" from his 2012 LP "Beams"

Matthew Dear sings through an MF-104Z Analog Delay for a slapback effect.

Greg Paulus plays Trumpet through an MF-104Z Analog Delay using long delay time to harken long repeating echoes of each trumpet line

Samer Ghadry is playing the Moog Guitar through an MF-104Z Analog Delay, utilizing the Controlled Sustain mode, which allows him to sustain single strings while the strings he's not playing are totally muted

Ian Chang drives the song using trap-kat drum pads triggering 3 Minimoog Voyager Rack Mount Editions. Ian uses the Envelope Gate switch to sustain continuous sound during parts of the song.

Danny Scales, rounds out Earthforms with his bass guitar.

Model Electronics SKULPT Synthesiser Livestream Overview

Premiered 48 minutes ago Matthew Hodson

"This is a quick run down of the NEW #SKULPT #synthesiser by #Modal #Electronics. Here I give an overview and a run down of the main features while trying out some of the built in presets. This is a livestream so this is unedited, so apologies for any quirks or rambling 😁

🎼 The track I composed using only this synth can be heard here:"

"UK based artist and synth enthusiast Matthew Hodson was one of the first to get his hands on a prototype of the Modal SKULPT synthesiser. He produced this banging demo track showcasing some of the sonic capabilities our new portable polyphonic synth can dish out.

One half of the Knighstown outfit, Matthew is a busy performer and music producer who has worked in some of the best studios up and down of the UK. Just signed to the legendary FatCat Records, his future sonic excursions will see Matthew produce his own brand of psychedelic techno characterised for his controlled fusion of both ambient and aggressive electronica. His latest album ‘DETACH’ builds on layers of rhythms and melody, drenched in arrhythmic delays and swashes of reverb, which masterfully play with song structure, provoking the listener with familiarity and yet disconnection - is out now via his own label Solitude. Recent performances by Hodson include opening for Wire, supporting the likes of Alex Banks (Monkeytown Records), Ulrich Schnauss, Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes) and also working with the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop on their new material at Peter Gabriel’s Realworld studios.

Drop Science - Matthew Dear + The Sounds Of GE

Published on Aug 26, 2014 General Electric

Track made using samples of GE's machines.  Above is the "making of" promotional video.  Further below is the track.  There's some synth spotting in the video including a Minimoog Voyager, Elektron boxes & more.  I'm guessing the track features extensive processing along with the synths and isn't composed of GE machine samples only.  It is still interesting and worth noting that sounds in nature and via physical/mechanical means can compliment music as well as those via purely synthetic means.

"Every machine has its own acoustic signature - a precise frequency that indicates whether that machine is operating at peak performance. GE engineers monitor and record these sounds to perform real-time diagnostics on airplane engines, locomotives, power turbines, and medical equipment. Musician Matthew Dear and GE Acoustic Engineer Andrew Gorton teamed up to collect and compose thousands of audio emissions from the world’s most powerful machines. The result is an original track of music titled 'Drop Science.'

Hurricane Matthew Jam

Published on Oct 7, 2016 Nick Jackson

"I am holed up in my residence in the Florida Keys with shutters over the windows, waiting for Matthew to pass. The weather here is just a little gusty at best, but other places have not been as lucky.

Anyway, it seemed like a good day to jam on some synth. This is a live performance on the Korg Minilogue plugged through a Mutable Instruments Ripples filter and then through my guitar pedalboard with a few goodies engaged. Sorry for the awkward frame, but my tripod broke and this is the only way I can get it to sit now lol.

Thank you very much for listening."

Keep safe Nick!!!, and all other MATRIXSYNTH readers bracing the storm! If you are in Hurricane Matthew territory, leave a comment in this post and let us know how you are holding up!

Bleep Bloop 2000 Overview and Demo

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT ) of Patchwerks shows off the new Bleep Bloop 2000 by Tim Held and After later Audio.

Bleep Bloop 2000, or BB2k is a collaboration between Tim Held of Podular Modcast and After Later Audio. What started as a joke-module made by Tim’s friend Jenny has now actualized into real-life. What is it? Why is it? These are all questions we are still asking ourselves. All we know is we love it.

BB2k can be used as a four-voice oscillator or a quirky CV-source. It was designed to inspire experimentation and creative patching. While it appears simple at face-value, it is actually quite versatile. BB2k is able to get into glitchy rhythm generation, haunting drones and outrageous control voltage over any parameter the user wishes. Just power it on and start exploring!

West Pest Demo and Thoughts with Space Echo RE-2

video upload by Patchwerks

Get yourself a West Pest here: https://bit.ly/west_pest
Check out the Space Echo RE-2 here: https://bit.ly/spcae_echo_re2

'The West Coast folks couldn’t be like everyone else. They had to go all yoga mat, kale smoothie, and alfalfa sprout on the synth world. West Coast style is typically characterized by additive derived, rich and complex sounds. Often more traditional user interface elements are replaced by the abstract and experimental. Perfect for you sophisticated folks.

All that said, West Pest is actually not a deep dive into the abstract. It provides a wide array of sonic capabilities while maintaining a quick and easy workflow. You’ll make fresh & inspiring sounds in a flash without having to think about kale smoothies, unless that’s your thing, in that case, yes tons of kale smoothies, pitchers full of them. Anyway, West Pest’s huge sonic capabilities emanate from its modest bento box-sized (sprout-free) exterior.

If eurorack is your thing, feel free to pop West Pest out of its enclosure and transform it right into a 40HP eurorack module, or keep it in its case and use it anywhere for your West Coast style pleasure.'
