Being perhaps the most popular version of one of the most iconic monophonic analog synth series of all time is no easy feat, but the Moog Minimoog Model D manages to pull it off. As one of the first non-modular synthesizers, the Minimoog Model D is highly intuitive and requires very little knowledge to use. The model D boasts contouring circuits and three separate, completely original oscillators, one of which can be used as an LFO. Although the Model D was reissued, the '70s Minimoog Model D hasn't depreciated in value, desirability, or style.

Syntronik & Yamaha DX7 - Sound Comparison Minimoog, OB-Xa, CS-80, Jupiter-8, JX-8P To SY99 & DX7

"Syntronik is a sampled waveform based VST that emulates legendary synths such as Minimoog, Oberheim OB-Xa, Yamaha CS-80, Roland Jupiter-8, Roland JX-8P and Yamaha SY99.

As I can never afford (nor I have space to keep) all of those legendary synths, I bought Syntronik so that I get to play and learn more about those legendary synths.

As I’ve been making analog/subtractive synth-like patches on my DX7, I decided to put my DX7 MK1 against Syntronik with mighty legendary synths like Minimoog, OB-Xa, CS-80, Jupiter-8, JX-8P and SY99.

In this demo and comparison video, you will watch and hear sounds of the DX7 MK1 compared side by side to Syntronik legendary synths. Some sounds are close and others are different in many ways.

Although the DX7 can’t do everything that analog synths with a resonant filter can do, the DX7 can stand its own with unique sounds that analog synths may find very difficult to emulate.

I will take you thorough from very easy installation and set-up steps. I will give you a quick tour of Syntronik interface and legendary synths.

Yamaha SY99 with bell and electoric piano Vs Power DX7 signature patches, Bell X2 and E.Piano (beefed up version)

Minimoog with Resonant stab bass & Resonant Sequencing Vs Power DX7 signature patches, Resonant Stab Bass and Resonant Sequencing. As the DX7 doesn’t have a resonant filter, it needs to generate all harmonics using its FM synthesis. This produces a resonant filter-like, yet very distinctive tone with a ‘Sticky’ feel.

Also it includes a new Bell (like a small bell rolling around inside of a glass bottle), a Resonant Filter Sweep sounds and another Resonant Sequencing sound with a formant type tone when played soft (yes, you can have two different tones in a single patch for the DX7!).

"The Minimoog is a monophonic analog synthesizer, invented by Bill Hemsath and Robert Moog. It was released in 1970 by R.A. Moog Inc. and production was stopped in 1981. But you can still get the Voyager model, they run about $3,000.00.

Rush is known for its eclectic lyrics drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy. The band's musical style has changed several times over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, and including a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers. RUSH first used one in the song 'Tom Sawyer', which was in 1980."

I used here the Oberheim OB-X Synthesizer for the pads and the main synth riff. The bass is made with the Moog Taurus and I used the Minimoog for the lead sound parts."

Subdivisions by the canadian prog rock group Rush, released as the second single from their 1982 album Signals. Written and produced by Rush.

This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers.

The Taurus 1 use linear VCOs. The Minimoog and the later Taurus 2 and 3 use exponential VCOs. Linear VCOs are the secret for the stable bass sound of the Taurus 1.

It was a blast to play a supporting role in this, we gave full access of our Keith Emerson keyboard rig (as well as our extensive collection of vintage analog synths) to Antoine and it was like turning a kid loose in a candy store, a cornucopia of awesomeness! "This is a re-mastered version of the original Yamaha DX7 analog patches demo video. Except for U.K. Alaska, all songs include bass, drums and other additional tracks. This video also include a bonus track that you haven't seen it before.

All DX7 patches featured are created and fine-tuned by myself, using my DX7 front panel only (no patch editor used). I hope you enjoy this video and hope to inspire you that the DX7 is the truly powerful and versatile ‘pure’ synthesizer of all time.

Berlin, Masquerade
With added bass, guitar, FX and drum tracks, they bring the song to life! The modulated string pad is an emulation of the Prophet - 5 string pad that was used for the original song.

Rush, Subdivisions
It includes a brand new Oberheim OB-X like synth brass sound (soft and mellow like the original). It also features a female choir pad.

Van Halen, 1984 & Jump
Beautiful, warm and rich Oberheim synth (e.g., OB-X and OB-Xa) string and brass patches are faithfully created. It is amazing how the Yamaha DX7 sounds are so close to sounds from Oberheim synths. Also, it can mimic filter sweeping, creating analogue-like, yet uniquely DX7 sounds.

U.K., Alaska
This DX7 analog patch is uniquely DX7 with its’ FM synthesis engine. It ‘s a very powerful DX7 synth brass sound with ‘ear-piecing’ mid-range harmonics as well as it’s own flanging effect.

Bonus Track: Rush - Tom Sawyer
This song was the main feature of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame 2013. It includes a filter sweep, bass, MiniMoog thick lead, pad and drums."

YouTube via AirbrushRocks — April 14, 2008 — "'Subdivisions' is a Rush song often considered to be describing feelings of isolation, boredom, conformity, and sadness springing up from teenage life in the suburbs.
"Subdivisions" was released on the 1982 album Signals. Aside from being a perennial fan favourite and a staple of live performances, the song appears on several greatest hits compilations, was released as a single in 1982, and despite doing little serious business in the UK charts, it gained a lot of radio airplay in Britain at the time. It was also played live prior to its release. Pre-release live versions exist on the internet.

The promotional videos scenes were filmed in the Toronto area. The downtown scenes in downtown Toronto, the suburbs scenes in Scarborough, Ontario, near Warden and Finch. The high school scenes were filmed at L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute, in the same area. The student that walks downtown in the video is Dave Glover, a student at the L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute at the time. SYNTHPLEX Pics - Minimoog Prototypes & Hybrid System with 8 SEMs, Minimoog & Taurus Pedals

"So I went to Synthplex on a complete whim this year. I originally wasn't going to go but one of my coworkers convinced me to check it out. I'm very glad that I did!

I arrived just in time for the BT keynote, which is where my friend was waiting for me. I had no problems with getting a seat right near the front. The talk was very nice, and mostly focused on the subject of appreciating synthesizers as instruments, as opposed to using them as preset banks.

Afterwards we headed to the popup synth museum, which was adjacent to the halls which held the keynotes. The museum was a bit out of the way and so it wasn't too busy and it was relatively easy to get in front of a synth. In terms of keyboards, it was my first time with a CS-80, MemoryMoog, and Jupiter 4. I really liked all of them! The Jupiter 8 which they had was also very nice.

The one surprise for me was the EML Electrocomp 101. Wow that thing is fun! Too bad that used prices on them are a bit out of control at the moment :-\

After that we finally made our way to the vendors halls. You've seen the video by now [see here], but there was a guy there with some very early Moog prototypes. Holy cow, I never expected to see those there.

Other highlights were the Waldorf Kyra at the Waldorf booth, which now had quite a few presets added to it, and a Moog 3p at the Noisebug booth. The latter, I would totally buy in a heartbeat if I could. What an inspiring beast. I might take a trip out to Noisebug to check it out. I was a bit disappointed/surprised that Moog didn't have a booth though. I was looking forward to finally trying out the Moog One in person.

Finally, the single coolest thing that I saw was this beast at the Rosen Sound booth.

8 voices of Oberheim SEM, plus a built in MiniMoog Model D, and Taurus pedals. Wow what a sound. After playing that thing and the CS-80 in the same day, I would take an Oberheim 8 voice over the CS-80. It makes me more than a little sad that Tom Oberheim wasn't able to get his 4 voice synth out the door.

Overall, I'm super glad that I went, and being there put me in a better mood in regards to my music hobby. I actually feel like making music again. I'm already looking forward to next year's event and am planning on spending more time there, especially in regards to the keynote speakers and concerts. It might be something that you would enjoy as well :D"
