OCTAVE CAT SRM I DEMO FOR MATT

video upload by Synth Tailor Electronics

"On Christmas Eve, a demo was released highlighting the wonderful, odd, and charismatic Vintage Synthesizer made by Octave Electronics, the CAT SRM (1978).

This crazy CAT SRM synthesizer packs quite a lot into it's package, and can be dialed up to make sweet, calm Cat sounds, or very weird Sci-Fi and Noise sounds.

This CAT SRM was just repaired and restored by our shop Synth Tailor Electronics, this video demo is for Matt from Sensorium Studios.

History on Octave Electronics (later Octave Plateau) CAT SRM:

In 1978 Octave upgraded the Cat to the "Series Revised Model "(aka SRM). This added several improvements, including an SSM2040 VCF, an LFO delay and a pedal input jack for offsetting the VCO1 frequency. The main improvement was the keyboard interface circuitry which included sample and hold circuits for both of the control voltages generated by the keyboard. On most duophonic synths of the era, there was only one sample and hold dedicated to the keyboard, so when playing duophonically, when the keys were released, the secondary control voltage would jump to the primary voltage, meaning that it was impossible to get duophonic notes in the envelope release phase. The Cat SRM would hold both control voltages, so a two-note chord would continue to sound as a chord through the release phase. This was an unusual feature for an analog duophonic keyboard and quite an improvement over competing designs.

If you have a vintage synthesizer, drum machine, piece of rare studio equipment, outboard gear or tape machine...please reach out via our website to send it in for repairs and restoration. Were based out of Columbus, Ohio and our website is: www.synthtailorelectronics.com"

Custom Patch Demos - Octave, Novation, Korg, Yamaha, Roland, Ensoniq, & Oberheim Vintage Synths

video uploads by soitgoesmusic

Playlist:

The Cat by Octave (1976 Non-SRM) Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the vintage Octave Cat synthesizer. This is the original Non-SRM one from 1976. It's one fat sounding synth.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- amazing vintage analog sound
- it feels alive with electricity and has lots of subtle variations in the textures of the sound
- independent faders for each wave form means that 8 sounds can be playing at once (4 on VCO 1, 3 on VCO 2, and noise), creating huge sounds

Cons:
- no midi
- needs to be tuned on each use
- needs lots of maintenance (i.e., regular calibration)
- can't save patches and rarely sounds exactly the same twice
Novation Drumstation - Custom Kits Demo
A demo of the OG 808 and 909 emulator: the Novation Drumstation. This is the version 2. Wanted to show the versatility of the machine.

Kits programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the drum machine.

Pros:

- well emulated 808 and 909 sounds in a small 1U rack unit
- adds tuning to some drums that originals don't have
- built in distortion and front cut

Cons:

- no on-board sequencer
- no power switch
Korg MS-20 (Vintage) Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the original Korg MS-20. This is a wild synth that can take you to some unexpected places.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- amazing vintage analog sound
- patch bay provides so many unique configurations
- the resonant high pass filter can make huge bass
- has quirks that make it sound and behave like no other (e.g., the unusual sustain on EG2, the hold time on EG2, the External Signal Processor, etc.)

Cons:
- no midi
- can't save patches (though taking pictures can help)
Yamaha RX5 drum machine - Custom Kits Demo
A demo of the under-rated Yamaha RX5 drum machine. Wanted to show how strange and sci-fi this machine can sound.

Kits programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the drum machine. Each section is made from four drum sounds. Only the stock sounds from the unit were used. No cartridges or external sounds added.

Pros:

- amazing voice editing features
- gritty lo-fi sound
- volume slider and individual out for each drum pair

Cons:

- no velocity
- interface is needlessly complex
Roland Juno-106 Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the legendary Roland Juno-106. Trying to show off the analog warmth of this synth.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth (including the scratchiness of the chorus). Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- amazing analog sound
- hands-on control over all parameters
- wide sweet spot

Cons:
- no velocity
- needs to warm up to sound its best
Korg MS2000 BR Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Korg MS2000BR. Wanted to show some of this synth's unique features, such as the modulation sequencer (1:03, 2:34, and 5:00) and the vocoder (1:26).

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- lots of hands on control
- modulation sequencer

Cons:
- polyphony is only 4
Ensoniq ESQ-1 Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Ensoniq ESQ-1. Trying to show some of the versatility of this digital/analog hybrid synth.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- very easy to program for a digital interface
- the keyboard has a great feel

Cons:
- no real-time parameter changes, except through mod wheel
Yamaha TX81Z Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Yamaha TX81Z. Trying to show what this synth can do beyond the dated presets.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- editing the parameters can yield surprising results
- efficient with cost and space

Cons:
- tedious to program
Oberheim Matrix-6R Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Oberheim Matrix-6R.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- a deep synth with lots of editable parameters, many of which can be controlled through the modulation matrix
- great analog sound

Cons:
- tedious to program, can be helpful to have the parameter list in front of you

Jordan Rudess plays the Megawave, Obie One, CATO, and Triptych from Syntronik 2

Jordan Rudess plays the Megawave modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2
video upload by ikmultimedia

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the Megawave. The Megawatt features the powerful wavetable synth sounds of the original Waldorf Microwave, a classic digital/analog hybrid. The Microwave was the heir to the PPG Wave legacy with its sweepable digital wavetables and Curtis chip analog filter. The unit we recorded is the most coveted Rev A version."

And a few more:

Jordan Rudess plays the Obie One modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the Obie One. The Obie One is our recreation of the innovative Oberheim OB-1, excellent at creating classic and fat sounding bass, pad and lead sounds. The new 4-pole slope in our O-Type state variable filter model in Syntronik 2 now captures the distinct difference between the 2- and 4-pole filter sounds of this excellent hardware synth."

Jordan Rudess plays the CATO modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the CATO. The CATO captures the distinctive analog sounds of the Octave Cat SRM and its SSM filter. The pure-analog tonality of this synth is huge, and its modulation capabilities allow for truly unique and stylized timbres. Able to create gigantic Moog-style basses, the CAT can also go in its own sonic direction with its clever oscillator sync implementation."

Jordan Rudess plays the Triptych modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the Triptych. The Triptych is based on the warm sounds of the classic Korg Trident with its separate synth, string and brass sections. The Trident was basically a 2-oscillator Korg Polysix combined with a convincing string machine with dedicated ensemble chorus and a paraphonic brass synth. It is a beast of a synth capable of a wide range of classic analog synth and stringer sounds."

Octave Plateau The Cat Analog Synthesizer PRE-SRM 1976

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This one was listed back in 2012.

"Pre-SRM model, super clean, works and sounds great. Much richer tone than either of the later SRM models. Comparable to Mk. II Arp Odyssey (2810) except many more routing and sound shaping options. One of the most versatile monosynths ever made, a superb solo/lead instrument, an insane FX machine, an absolute joy to play.

This unit has holes drilled for CV/gate (non-standard) but interface does not work. so just consider this as a standard pre-SRM Cat that can be easily modded in the event you want to add CV/gate."

"This is the earlier model and is capable of duophonic (the two oscillators can be played separately) and each oscillator has a separate S/H feature, but it is not an SRM version because it doesn't have SRM written on the back and also looks different from the SRM (i.e. no LFO delay in the ADSR section, different knobs, etc.). In excellent condition and is working great. Keyboard triggers well most of the time but may need a cleaning in the future. Similar in design to the Arp Odyssey but with its own unique sound and tone. Sounds great, some gnarly bass and analogue character."

OCTAVE THE CAT Synthesizer - Sounds & Patches | Synth Demo

Published on Dec 18, 2019 synth4ever

"Demo of Octave The Cat analog synthesizer, featuring tweaking on various sounds and patches. Filmed at Paul's Boutique music shop (www.paulsboutique.ca) in Toronto, Canada.

Released in the 1970s, Octave the Cat is a monophonic/duophonic synth with 2 VCOs (2 sawtooth, 2 square wave, and 1 triangle) plus 2 sub-oscillators, 1 LFO, 1 VCA and 2 envelope generators (AR and ADSR). It also has some quirky modulation routings.

Both the original Cat and SRM Cat allow you to create some wild sounds including screaming leads, S&H patterns and noisy textures. It is a fun synth to explore as it offers a decent amount of sound design potential.

Octave The Cat is a classic synth similar in design to the Arp Odyssey, but with its own sonic flavor. If you have the chance to try one out, definitely give it a go."

Octave Cat SRM Analog Synth

via this auction
"S/N for this beauty is B3257.
The mono-/duophonic 'Cat' is a 70s analog synth with an architecture designed very closely after the famous arp odyssey. The term 'SRM' stands for 'series revision model', so it is an improved version with additional interfacing options and ssm-based filter, there is also a 'SRM2' model in existence. The Cat features 2 vco's, one with pulse width modulation, both with a sub oscillator, vco1 and 2 can be adressed separately in the 'duophonic' keyboard mode, like in the Arp Odyssey. This technique uses the internal keyboard voltages, so this will not work with external control voltages. To add to the feature list, the Cat offers a mixable noise signal, a resonant 24db lowpass filter, one adsr-envelope and one ar-envelope with retrig option and furthermore a lfo as well as sample & hold. The lfo is permanently synced to the gate signal, so it automatically restarts when a new note is played - often useful, sometimes limiting.

The strongest point about the Cat is modulation, there is an abundance of modulation possibilities on oscillators and filter - pwm, sync and crossmodulation from vco1>vco2 and vco2>vco1 simultaneously and independently, all with very precise control. VCO1 can be switched out of the audio path, if things get too nasty. The various vco waveforms and suboctave signals are available in parallel, each one having their own slider - this comes in extremely handy with sync and cross mod sounds. The filter can be driven into self oscillation and is controlled by lfo, sample & hold or one of the envelopes and above all offers frequency modulation by vco1. Interfacing is possible via a cv/gate stereo jack, inputs for pedal control of vcf and vca and even an external signal input to the filter are available.

Soundwise, the cat's dominant impression must be 'powerful', things can get very thrashy and harsh, but there are always nuances where strange and beautiful timbres evolve, and there are enough control possibilities given to sensibly pinpoint a certain sound. Generally the sound is positively like 'ancient electronics', it can provide anything from deep bass, to powerful percussive sounds, to complex noisescapes, and it brings in a character all of its own."

Octave CAT SRM Model 1853 SN B4046

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this eBay listing

"A bold, duophonic analog classic with a reputation for massive tone and underrated flexibility.

This is the Mk II version of the legendary Octave CAT — a U.S.-built synth from the mid-to-late 1970s that offers two VCOs with saw, square, and triangle waveforms (VCO 1 only), cross modulation, oscillator sync, and mixable waveforms. With duophonic capabilities and a famously powerful filter section, the CAT delivers deep bass, snarling leads, and complex drones with ease.

Key Features:

Two VCOs with independent modulation routing

Oscillator sync, cross-mod, and sub-octave options

VCF with audio-rate modulation and noise source

SRM (Series Revision Model) Mk II panel layout with white-only graphics

Bypass switch, modulation source selectors, and fine-tuning control

Serial number B4046

This unit is fully functional and sounds incredible. Cosmetically, it shows normal wear for its age, but everything works as intended.

An increasingly rare and highly regarded U.S.-made synth that stands tall next to the Minimoog, ARP Odyssey, and Pro-One — but with its own unique voice and vibe."

"Rare, Vintage 1977 first generation, non-SRM, “Cat” Synthesizer, from Octave electronics... They did not make a lot of these but Octave released this analog classic - the Cat - during the era of the Minimoog and ARP Odyssey synthesizers. "You are bidding on a vintage The Cat by Octave Analog Synthesizer, non SRM. This was bought from the original owner. It was just fully gone over and serviced by Dean of 5 Star DJ Center in Mesa, Dean the the most highly regarded Synth repair person in the west. This synth is in amazing condition and plays great. All knobs and switches are really smooth.

There are two new replacement knobs for VCO 1 modulation depth. There are numbers etched on the back panel.

Includes the Original Manual with the Original filled out Warranty Card, and 6 Octave Cat brochures. Also includes a Vintage Switched on Synthesizer book and sample record, book shows the basic sounds by presets for any synthesizer. Includes vintage gray cable.

Perfect working vintage synth that sounds great."

Note the original mailer envelope. Pretty amazing to see all of this together.
