"Ah, the OB-X8, my most cherished synthesizer. Here's the SPLIT mode patches I've made this far, based purely on whatever I happened to be in the mood to play. Obviously these are all cover sounds, but just goes to show how versatile the OB-X8 is. The SPLIT and DOUBLE mode functions are so effortless, like a Jupiter 8, just 2 panels at the press of a button. Makes programming a breeze!"

Oberheim OB-Xa Resonance Sweep Compared to Matrix-12

"Here, I re-create Oberheim OB-Xa factory preset C4, which was famously used in Van Halen's 1984 intro, on the Oberheim Matrix-12. The Matrix-12 uses a different CEM chip (3372) for the filter and I believe the EGs were created in software. However, with programming, it can be made to sound quite similar to the CEM 3320 found in the OB-Xa. Listen for yourself.

Programming hint: I use a tracking generator to achieve the exponential attack curve found on the OB-Xa filter envelope generator. :-)"

I Spent 6 Months Creating the Tom Sawyer OB-X Sweep on my Oberheim OB-X8

"Over the course of 6 months, I set out to replicate the classic Oberheim OB‑X resonance sweep from Tom Sawyer using my OB‑X8. Dialing this in was a serious challenge. Even so, it’s not a perfect match as there’s no way to fully capture the unique character of Geddy Lee's original OB‑X, particularly the per-voice oscillator tuning variance, pulse width variance, filter cutoff, and envelope generator de-calibration that shaped this sound.

The OB‑X8’s Vintage knob gets impressively close, though.

This clip was recorded on my phone. I’m hoping to put together a higher-quality demo in the future. For now, hope you enjoy it."

"This is my take on Jump using the OB-X8.

It’s the first song I ever played with a band back in high school, so getting this sound right has always mattered to me. The OB-X8 gets you very close straight away, but the details are what make it sit like the record.

During the guitar solo section I brought in portamento to match that glide you hear in the original, then switched it off for the keys solo so it snaps back to that tight, punchy feel.

That balance between accuracy and playability is exactly how I approach all my sound packs. They’re built to work in a real band setting, not just in isolation.

If you’re playing covers regularly, having these sounds ready to go changes everything.

"My cover version of Rush's Subdivisions from the Signals album. Thanks to Shadowinlight on YouTube for the excellent isolated drum and vocal tracks - and of course to Rush.

I played all guitar, bass and synths on this recording. The three synths used are the Oberheim OB-X8 and the Moog Model D (Geddy Lee version), and the Moog Taurus III. The guitar is a vintage Kramer Stagemaster Deluxe 1 running through the Fractal Audio FM9 using a tweaked Alex Lifeson preset, and a Steve Vai preset for the guitar solo. The bass is a Strandberg Boden Prog 5 running through the Tech 21 GED-2112 using Geddy's setting as described in the manual.

The animation was created in Artmatic Designer.

"My cover version of Rush's Countdown from the Signals album. It's always been one of my favorites. Thanks to Shadowinlight on YouTube for the isolated vocals, Metal Overkill on YouTube for the isolated drums, Kevin Sheppard on YouTube for the isolated sound effects, and NASA on YouTube for the communications. - and of course to Rush.

I played all guitar, bass and synths on this recording. The two synths used are the Oberheim OB-X8 and the Moog Model D (Geddy Lee version). The guitar is a vintage Kramer Stagemaster Deluxe 1 running through the Fractal Audio FM9 using a tweaked Alex Lifeson preset. The bass is a Strandberg Boden Prog 5 running through the Tech 21 GED-2112 (two mono channels, Drive and Deep, are recorded on separate tracks).

The NASA communications track was painstakingly recreated using NASA's STS-1 Launch- The Complete Day video. By far it took the most time to do... I had to take some liberties, but I did find most of the bits that Rush used on the album. Cheers!"
