ALPHALAB AUDIO: 🎛️ EMS AKS SYNTHI (1975) - Restauro completo 🎛️

video upload by SOUNDMIT

Googlish:

"In our Alphalab Audio laboratory in Turin, specialized in the repair and restoration of electronic musical instruments, we had the pleasure of working on an EMS SYNTI AKS that just recently turned 50!

The instrument had several modifications made over time and not working perfectly, so the owner commissioned us to completely restore the machine.

The matrix was revised, the pots were changed with the original multi-turn ones, some components that were no longer performing were replaced and the complete calibration was performed.

The keyboard was also restored and calibrated.

If you have a synth or an electronic musical instrument to restore, trust our technicians!"

NAMM 2025: Roland Juno-D Keyboards

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2025, Nick from Sonicstate caught up with Ed from Roland to discuss the updated Roland Juno-D series. Initially released in September, the Juno-D offers three variations: a 61-note synth, a 76-note synth action, and an 88-note piano action keyboard. It features the ZEN-Core sound engine, boasting 3,500 sounds that you can split and layer across seven parts. Additionally, there is a dedicated rhythm part, and the built-in pattern sequencer enhances creative capabilities.

Ed explained that the Juno-D utilizes PCM-based sounds and supports Roland Cloud and ZENOLOGY Pro for deeper sound editing. The Juno-D includes USB-C power, eliminating the need for AA batteries, and it utilizes USB-C for seamless computer connection without requiring drivers. The keyboard supports splitting and layering, with up to seven layers in super layer mode. It also includes a 64-step sequencer, built-in rhythms, and phrase pads for recording and playback. The model offers 256-note polyphony, making it versatile for live performances."

Testing new machine with radio & drum machine

video uploads by Telmatronics

"Experimenting with live radio signals on the line-in channel, and syncing a drum machine
The synth and drum machine are plugged into the mixer, radio into the synth line-in
Recorded onto phone with audio line from mixer, synth levels a bit variable.

Having random sounds to mix into the tube input signal produced some interesting results, especially with gated output so the signal gets abstracted.
Big thanks to Ed for drum machine and beats 👌"

Being perhaps the most popular version of one of the most iconic monophonic analog synth series of all time is no easy feat, but the Moog Minimoog Model D manages to pull it off. As one of the first non-modular synthesizers, the Minimoog Model D is highly intuitive and requires very little knowledge to use. The model D boasts contouring circuits and three separate, completely original oscillators, one of which can be used as an LFO. Although the Model D was reissued, the '70s Minimoog Model D hasn't depreciated in value, desirability, or style.

Watch me bring that sound back to life!🎹🕺"

OPERATION_1 - Novation Circuit Tracks Pack by Yuri Wong

video upload by Isotonik Studios

"The OP-1 has long been a device of creative inspiration, and now those sounds can be accessed directly on the Circuit Tracks, in a set of 128 patches emulating 8 of the OP-1’s iconic engines:

Cluster, Digital, DNA, Dr Wave, DSynth, String, FM, Phase & Pulse

The goal while creating OPERATION_1 was to get maximum musical expressiveness for the patches, with the original sounds as the starting point. Each Circuit sound was crafted to be as close to the OP-1 patch as musically possible. For movements or textures where the Circuit Tracks engine couldn’t emulate, effort was made to make it come as close as the Circuit engine would allow, yet still maintain the usefulness of the sound i.e. to make it as functional and creatively inspiring as possible for music creation.

Here’s what’s in OPERATION_1:

- 128 OP-1 Patches, Recreated by an OP-1 Connoisseur -

Immerse yourself in the distinctive sounds of the OP-1, accurately reproduced for your Circuit. Each patch is crafted and A/B-ed with the original OP-1 for maximum authenticity. You can now explore the spectrum of inspiring OP-1 sounds within the Circuit.

- 8 Macros for Limitless Tweakability -

Tweak and transform your sounds with 8 carefully programmed macros in every patch, allowing you to shape each sound to suit any creative vision. Every individual patch has it’s own unique response to the Macros, programmed specifically for that sound. Find your own unique sounds, spark ideas and break out of creative ruts.

- 64 Original Drum Sounds -

Inspired by the creative kits on the OP-1, these kicks, snares, hats and percussion are crafted with versatility in mind, covering basics and beyond.

- 16 Demo Projects -

Two projects demos per ‘engine’ for each of the eight engines, to showcase the versatility of the sounds and to inspire ideas for your own tracks.

Why Choose This Pack?

Crafted by a Specialist: Yuri Wong has created many popular tracks with the OP-1. The iconic stock sounds of the OP-1 have taken many months of work to be meticulously recreated for the Circuit.
Made for Exploration: Each of the 8 macros are customised for every patch, allowing for ‘tweak and listen’ sonic discovery — perfectly in-line with the ‘no-screen’ philosophy of the Circuit.
A Synth Upgrade: Transform your Circuit into a synth powerhouse, with sounds rivalling the best out there.
Experience the magic of OP-1 sounds on your Novation Circuit. Discover the joy of exploration and get your musical inspiration flowing.

Dianzi Qin (电子琴) Chinese synth from 1978

video upload by Robotussin Vintage Synths

"Look at these strange synths produced by Cold War-era China. This is a Dianzi Qin (电子琴).

The synth came about following a cultural exchange in the early 1970s when composer Bernie Krause visited China to demonstrate a Moog modular system. It was part of Richard Nixon’s attempt to build up relations with China to counterbalance Soviet influence in the region – a program known as “Ping-pong diplomacy”.

Krause demo’ed his Moog to Communist officials who were apparently very impressed, after which the Party declared that electronic music 'had no cultural bias', meaning it was not intrinsically Western and decadent, and so there was no problem for Chinese people to explore it and incorporate it into their compositions.

This led inventor Tian Jin Qin to develop this instrument, as a modern, electronic synthesizer with Chinese characteristics – it’s loosely based on traditional Chinese string instruments such as the Erhu.

The Dian Zi Qin is controlled with four ribbons, which power an additive synth engine. There seem to have been two versions, one that looks like an upright stringed instrument, the other that looks more like a desktop synth but with a vertical neck sticking out of it with the ribbon controls to finger. The second type has additional touch controls on the main unit that have some ability to bend and accent the note.

I’ve read that very few were made and it didn’t get out of the prototype stage, but in this video I see at least three playing in concert, as well as what looks like a more conventional organs. I’ve uploaded the full film to my YouTube channel as it was not available anywhere on the Western internet."

Relive the '90s with the Roland JD800: Factory Presets

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"Roland JD-800 - ALL FACTORY PRESETS

The Roland JD-800 is a digital synthesizer that was manufactured between 1991 and 1996. It features many knobs and sliders for patch editing and performance control — features that some manufacturers, including Roland, had been omitting in the name of streamlining since the inception of the Yamaha DX7. The JD-800 thus became very popular with musicians who wished to take a hands-on approach to patch programming. The introduction in the manual states that Roland's intention with the JD-800 was to "return to the roots of synthesis".

Technology
The JD-800 employs Linear Arithmetic synthesis (introduced and made famous by the Roland D-50), which combines sample playback with digital synthesis. The JD-800 has 108 built-in waveforms, which can be expanded via PCM cards. The waveforms span a variety of categories such as analog synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and voices. Many of these waveforms are very short and are used primarily for the attack portion of a sound, while longer ones are used for the sustained part of a sound. The JD-800 was Roland's first instrument to have its core presets developed entirely in the United States, under a short-lived branch of its R&D-LA office in Culver City, California. The core sampled waveforms and factory presets of the JD-800 were created by Eric Persing.

A patch, or single sound, in the JD-800 consists of up to four tones. As every tone consists of an almost completely independent synthesizer voice, a patch could be considered a combination of up to four different synthesizers. In Single mode the JD-800 plays one patch at a time, but in Multi mode it is possible to play five different patches over MIDI, plus a "special" patch. The special patch has different waveforms assigned to the 61 different keys on the keyboard, so is used for drums and percussion sounds. The JD-800 has one effects section. In Single mode, seven effects can be used simultaneously, in series, so all tones in a patch go through the same effects. In Multi mode, three effects can be used at the same time, with all patches sharing the same effects, though any of the patches can be routed to bypass the effects.
