Korg USA Mourns the Passing of Jack Hotop, Legendary Sound Designer and Innovator
Some sad news in via Korg.
You can find posts on MATRIXSYNTH featuring Jack Hotop here for a look back on his influence in the synthesizer community. The first post was a simple pic back in 2006.
Press release from Korg follows:
Over a 40-Year Career, the Influential Synthesist and Accomplished Touring Keyboardist Shaped the Sonic Architecture of More Than 100 Landmark Instruments, Including the Historic M1 Workstation
MELVILLE, N.Y. - Korg USA announces with deep sadness the passing of longtime employee, celebrated sound designer, and musical instrument industry icon Jack Hotop. Joining Korg USA (then Unicord) in 1983, Hotop started as Senior Voicing Manager and spent over four decades driving the development, sound design, programming, voicing, and product demonstrations for more than 100 Korg products. As a pioneering engineer and exceptionally skilled performer, his extensive contributions helped guide the evolution of synthesizers and digital workstations from the early 1980s through the modern era, leaving an indelible imprint on instruments used by musicians around the world and for generations to come.
Hotop’s foundational expertise was anchored in a rigorous musical and technical background. Raised in a musical family, he began piano lessons at age seven, inspired by his father, a musician featured on several Broadway cast recordings, and numerous pianists on his mother’s side. By age 14, he was actively performing in local bands on a Gibson 101 organ. He pursued formal training at the Berklee College of Music, majoring in arranging, composition, and accompaniment, before expanding into emerging music technology at the Boston School of Electronic Music under Roger Powell. It was there that Hotop established his core synthesis fundamentals using early hardware including the ARP Odyssey, 2600, 2500, and EMS Synthi, building a deep understanding of waveforms, envelopes, low-frequency oscillators, and modulators.

"The KORG wavestate is such an amazing playground
you have to carefully explore the setup of each preset in it’s details
The Software Library/editor and its overview is actually a big support in understanding the concept and the build-up of the #korgwavestate and the great presets - currently I am checking out the presets of Peter Schwartz and John Bowen - great Sound Designers 🙏🔥"

"It's a monster! ..yes, it's digital.. but, when you hear a 96kHz synth.. you quickly realize.. if there IS to be a digital synth.. then 96k is where it should be.. at that frame rate.. it's not 'steppy' and a lot smoother than the 'others', IMO. I'm the only owner of this 'lonely heart'. Bought it new, back when Awave was in a tiny arcade next to South Yarra station. It was the only synth that's ever 'tricked' me.. I thought it was analog 'something'. It just sounded too 'pure'.. so, I had to have it.. unfortunately, I haven't used it as much as it deserves.
This Solaris has resided in my smoke free studio since it was purchased new. Never toured, original PSU and manual (not that the manual is much use to anyone anymore.. that is.. with the advent of the newly developed V2 OS). For those that don't know, John was instrumental working alongside the late great Dr Robert Moog, in fact, he was there, in the early 70s, working alongside Dr Bob on the original MiniMoog.. fast forward a few years.. and there he was working alongside the late great Dave Smith @ Sequential Circuits. John worked on the Prophet 5, the VS and the Sequential Sampler, the Prophet 2000.
This was shortly before Yamaha acquired Sequential and retrenched the staff, yep.. that old chestnut.. and John went on to work at Korg where he was behind the WaveStation (basically he took his knowledge of the Korg VS and threw it into the WaveStation, as some might already be aware of). So, with all that history under his belt.. when it was time for John, whom I refer to as 'synth god', John started development on the Solaris. The Solaris is the culmination of all his passed work and synth experience, despite the panel often likened to the Oberheim Matrix 12, John had implemented Filters, Wave shapes, Step Sequencers, and not to forget 'Wave Sequencing' that've appeared in all his passed projects on those aforementioned classic synths, that he worked closely on with 'other' synth gods such as Dave Smith and Dr Bob Moog.
So, you could say.. the Solaris is what a 21st century synth-classic 'ought' to be. And, ultimately, that's why I wanted it, but.. I'm afraid, as good as it is.. it's more synth than I've ever needed...x10! It would be much more suited towards professional sound designers than someone who messes around with Samplers more often that not. Therefore, I'll let it go to another enthusiast.. other esteemed 'registered' owners in the Solaris forum are Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, JJ Abrams, Jean-Michel Jarre, Matt Johnson, Ty Unwin to name a few.
In a nutshell, if had a paragraph to sum it up.. it's like a Matrix-12 integrated with a WaveStation and then there's CEM, SSM, Moog and Prophet 5 'mimicked' filters and oscillator shapes... basically, loads of features and 'flavors' from every 'beast synth' before it.
Main features:
10 Voice Polyphony
4 Oscillators
4 Filters
6 Envelope Generators
4 LFO's (+1 for Vibrato)
16 Step Sequencer
Arpeggiator
8 analog outputs (4 stereo)
Digital (ADAT) Output
MIDI over DIN & USB
15 kg / 33 Lbs
Comes with the original Australian 240v external PSU"

"Serious synthesizer designed for the musician/performer. In fantastic working and cosmetic condition overall. Includes compact flash card and power supply.
The general concept behind the Solaris synthesizer is to implement something like a giant wall-sized modular system entirely in software where you can select among several completely different types of oscillators and filters, exquisitely modelled after the components culled from a variety of legendary vintage synthesizers of yesteryear and even some current virtual analog innovations of today. With up to four oscillators, four filters, four amplifiers, four four-input mixers, six envelope generators, one looping envelope generator, five LFOs, two vector mixers and still more of these software modules available in each program, the Solaris synthesizer becomes absolutely unrivalled in terms of versatility and programmability."

John Bowen Solaris Gets An Update - v2.1 OS Adds New Functions to the Sequencer and Arpeggiator
via John Bowen Synth Design
"Here is my documentation describing the new functions in v2.1 OS for the sequencer and arpeggiator. I know many people don’t bother to 'read the manual', but in this case, I think it will really be of value. There’s some special applications of a few functions you need to know about, such as the ‘note pool’ used for random note values, or how the modulation paths work."
The images below are from the PDF documentation John shared with owners of the Solaris. You can click on the images to read. With four oscillators, vector joystick, classic analog models, wavetable synthesis, phase distortion, unique rotors, and a completely modular design, all running at 96 kHz for pristine audio quality, the Solaris remains one of the most powerful synthesizers to date.

"Got this #143 Solaris synthesizer in 2018 and sadly has mostly sat unused under its dust cover in that time. Tremendously deep digital synthesizer that can be programmed to make just about any sound you might be able to imagine, including convincing emulations of classics that are near impossible to tell from the real deal. It just ended up being a whole lot more machine than I need, literally everything can modulate everything else inside this machine."

Synth excerpt from Always Rivalled (@No Man's Island)
video upload by Rune Flobakk
"Small excerpt from a new song, Always Rivalled, I am performing with my band @No Man's Island . Wanted to test out my recently acquired LinnDrum, and perform a multitrack one-take by routing the individual outs from the drum machine through a (also recently acquired) @Erica Synths Matrix Mixer, in order to flexibly assign drums to their own input channels. The polysynth parts are played on an Oberheim Matrix-12, and the bass on a John Bowen Solaris. All sounds and effects is generated 'outside the box' (not using any plugins), and only some mixing levelling and EQ is done post-recording.
The pink pedal you get a glimpse of in the beginning is a @Poly Effects Beebo, which I also use for live playing. Recording is done with an Allen & Heath Qu-16 into Logic on Mac.
The full song also includes vocals, guitars, electric bass, and drums."

Yamaha SY22 | Trade or throw?
video upload by Espen Kraft
"Yamaha SY22 - Dynamic Vector Synthesizer. From 1990. When Sequential Circuit went out of business and was bought up by Yamaha some of the team, headed by John Bowen went to work on the Korg Wavestation (also owned by Yamaha at the time) while Yamaha themselves went on to work on the SY22. As with the Prophet VS and the Wavestation, the SY22 works with 4 different elements, sound sources, oscillators or whatever you might call them, and with a joystick you can control their relative levels to each other. Or you can use the joystick to detune them. Coupled with in-built internal effects, 16 voices of polyphony and 8-part multi timbral (as well as a drum kit) it was a cheaper alternative of getting into "vector" synthesis.

Since the shooting of this video I've traded my SY22 for a Yamaha DX9. I've never really liked the sound coming out of the SY22. It can definitely be lo-fi, or glossy, and it can be a nice textured contrast to other synths, but sometimes you just don't "click" with certain synths and for me this is one of those cases."

Dave Smith Was an Ironman Triathlete
In case you missed it in this post, Roger Linn noted Dave Smith was "an avid athelete, cyclist and triathlete. He actually participated in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in his younger years..."
@birdkids reminded me of an article on the development of the Prophet VS archived on the WaybackMachine. In it, Chris Meyer mentions Dave was in Hawaii prepping for the tournament during that time. I thought it was interesting and worth sharing. I captured it below.
"Date: Wed, 15 Jan 1997 07:55:41 -0800
From: Xrystal
MIME-Version: 1.0
Subject: Birth of the Prophet VS
I thought the following might be of interest to you. Xrystal
_____________________________________________________________________
The Birth of the Prophet VS
By Chris Meyer, ex-employee of Sequential Circuits
reprinted from the VS WaveWrangler User Guide by permission of Interval Music Systems,
©1991 Interval Music Systems.
It all started somewhere in 1985. We were still working on the Prophet 2000 sampler,
and as resident historian (in other words, I had the most magazines and manuals) another
engineer was asking me to explain how various instruments performed crossfades. I had
finished discussing the Fairlight, and had moved on the PPG - explaining its wavetables,
and the ability for it to scan a group of waves first in one direction and then back again,
While I was scrawling this back and forth motion in my notebook, suddenly a little twinge
went off in the back of my head, and myhand drew the next line arcing down the page.. and the
concept of crossfading beween waves in two dimension, not just one, was born.

What can you do with 1 synth and 1 drum machine? You can have some fun.
video upload by Espen Kraft
"One drum machine and one synth, doing all the work. The John Bowen Solaris set up to use 3 independent arpeggiators, each one mapped out to the mid- and lower part of the keys, while a regular patch is left to be played, at the upper part of the keys. The Isla S2400 provides the drums with some samples I made of the Roland DDR-30.
The Solaris makes it possible to set the arps up with different resolutions, modes etc, which can be a lot of fun.
One patch is overdubbed later, for a little more texture. In a "real" live setting that would have been played by a sequencer."
