Two New Synthesizer Evolution Books by Oli Freke
Details follow via the author, Oli Freke:
These two new volumes in my Synth Evolution ‘zine series were launched at last weekend’s SynthEast event in Norwich, UK. They are Volume 3: Modern Classics, and Volume 4: Modular Greats. I’ve moved into the 21st Century with these two! As ever, they feature my signature hand-drawn illustrations and are full of facts, figures and tech-specs:
Volume 3: Modern Classics
Synthesizer Evolution: From Analogue to Digital (and Back) author Oli Freke returns with a new volume in his Synthesizer Evolution A6 zine series. The first two volumes (Vintage Synths and Drum Machines & Samplers) focused on vintage electronic instruments from the 1970s and 1980s. Volume three moves into the 21st century, showcasing a selection of the most interesting, impactful, and—arguably—best synthesizers of the past two decades.
The synths in this book celebrate the vast range of sonic possibilities now available to musicians and producers. From analogue wonders to extraordinary digital creations, from tightly designed monosynths to open-ended polyphonic beasts, each one is more marvellous than the last! Also featuring ‘Desert Island Modular’ choices from Robin Vincent, Steve Davis, Panic Girl and more.

Alesis Andromeda A6 on the cover.
Volume 4: Modular Greats
The modular resurgence of the past 25 years has been a wonder to behold. Where musicians were once chained to their DAWs, we are now liberated once again to wire, patch, and modulate in the real world, choosing from a mind-boggling array of options.
Modular Greats celebrates the fusion of art, logic, science, and serendipity in modular synthesis, highlighting some of the best-selling, most creative, and most impactful modules of the 21st century. Featured manufacturers include Make Noise, Mutable Instruments, TipTop Audio, Intellijel, Rossum Electro-Music, Doepfer—and many more!

Being perhaps the most popular version of one of the most iconic monophonic analog synth series of all time is no easy feat, but the Moog Minimoog Model D manages to pull it off. As one of the first non-modular synthesizers, the Minimoog Model D is highly intuitive and requires very little knowledge to use. The model D boasts contouring circuits and three separate, completely original oscillators, one of which can be used as an LFO. Although the Model D was reissued, the '70s Minimoog Model D hasn't depreciated in value, desirability, or style.
Watch me bring that sound back to life!🎹🕺"

Stereo Patch From Scratch with Panic Girl featuring XPO, Buchla 258t Dual Oscillator and the Touché
video upload by Perfect Circuit
"Eurorack modular synthesizers are embracing stereo sound in new ways—over the last few years, we've seen a ton of stereo-oriented modules come out from top brands like Make Noise, SSF, and plenty more!
In this video, Panic Girl walks us through a stereo patch on her personal system, featuring the Make Noise XPO, Mimeophon, and the Tiptop Buchla 258t Dual Oscillator. This mix of mono and stereo modules makes a great learning ground for getting into the stereo mindset—so grab some headphones, tune in, and space out!

X New Year - the first improv techno album from tamiX
video upload by tamiX (Nan Tang)
"Supporting tamiX, buy this album on Bandcamp: https://detund.bandcamp.com/album/x-n...
X New Year, the first album from tamiX, an artist skilled in improvising electronic music, records the live set at 024 in Beijing, a live house at Sanlitun, on the first day of new year night of 2022.
tamiX being an Buchla endorsed musician, played over 60-minute live set using rare Buchla 200e modular synthesizer system. It is an intensive exploration tamiX made to the music style she’s adept at: melodic techno, and created an unique tune integrating the features of experimental and musical.
To be affected by the distinctive glamour of tamiX, audiences should be in the live show, which is also the reason why tamiX barely released any record. As an electronic musician skilled in improvisation, compared with playing on the traditional music platforms, tamiX chose streaming video on YouTube instead, the leading medium in China and beyond the sea separately where audiences can watch all of her live show videos.
All things considered, the album X New Year includes the whole live show performance; meanwhile, the specific characteristics of tamiX playing electronic music improvisation are well demonstrated to its utmost.
Apart of the digital album, X New Year will be released as a special collector bundle, including a 44 pages photo book of tamiX's performance, and a USB sticker with more contents inside:
a) 60+ mins video of the performance
b) The trailer video
c) mp3 of the album
d) Uncompressed wav of the album
e) All photos in the photo book
f) Two picture of post cards
g) Pictures of the photo book
h) Cover picture of the album
i) Picture of my Buchla modules setup
Stay tuned for more infos about how to get the special collector bundle.

The Girl From Ipanema / 「イパネマの娘」 / Berglund Instruments - NuEVI with Modular Synthesizer
video by BANANA su
Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo
Main : Modular Synth controled NuEVI
Backing : Roland MC-101
"The Girl From Ipanema - イパネマの娘
・NuEVI/NuRAD IN端子
・Pitch CV OUT端子
・Breath CV OUT端子
・MIDI OUT端子
Googlish:
"The Girl From Ipanema --The Girl from Ipanema
Bossa Nova is fashionable !!!
Just by making the song selection Bossa Nova, you can transform yourself into a fashionable person ... !!!!!
My EVI is a CV model, but this time I tried to play it with a modular synth using the Eurorack CV module.
This CV module has
-NuEVI / NuRAD IN terminal
-Pitch CV OUT terminal
-Breath CV OUT terminal
-MIDI OUT terminal
NuEVI / RAD The MIDI terminal of is actually equipped with a breath and pitch CV output terminal (it seems that you should not call it MIDI if you install a signal other than the MIDI signal, but lol), and connect it to the IN terminal of the CV module. I'll use it.
I've been experimenting with this setting with the desire to get closer to John Swana's sound.
I used the GATE terminal to give it a moderate attack. "

Distco - Goodbye Girl (an 80's-style modular track)
Published on Aug 21, 2018 Distortion Productions
"My fav patch in quite awhile. It developed out of the previous more somber 'Magnesium' patch. I sequenced a much more prominent bassline on the Cwejman VCO-6 with the Erica Synths Sequential Switch V2 + CV Expander and an 80's beat on the Shakmat Four Bricks Rook. Modulating the release on the ADSR-VC2 and cutoff on the MMF-1S with the D-LFO gave the VCO-2RM melody some nice variations on tone and timing.
Lately, I've found that I want to improve a patch and re-record it using one of my nicer cameras and audio interface. But then something drifts, whether it's the timing of the sequencer, the tuning of the oscillator or snare, or the hi-hat is out of sync. I try to bring back the sound of the previous recording, but no matter what I do, I can't get the same feel back. When you're working with electrical voltages, things seem so fleeting. But it all seems to be intrinsic to modular synthesis."

Synthetic Sound Labs Steiner Filter (1 MU) - Model 1021
via Synthetic Sound Labs
Updated version of the model 1020 from 2010. You'll find some demo links of the original from 2010 on site.
"The SSL 1021 Steiner Filter is a 1 MU revision & enhancement of our popular but discontinued 1020 Steiner module, which was 2 MU. All the same crazy goodness is still there, plus a hidden feature that calms it down a bit without losing that wet, slippery sound everyone loves.
The Steiner filter is a unique filter for sound shaping that synthesists have long admired for both its warmth and quirkiness. Invented by Nyle Steiner in the early 1970's, this filter was used in Nyle's Synthacon synthesizer line and has been lovingly recreated and updated as part of our modular line.
At first glance, it may appear to be another 2-pole State Variable type filter with it's high-pass (HP), band-pass (BP) & low-pass (LP) outputs. But that's where things get turned upside down. The 1021 has HP, BP & LP inputs, not outputs. These allow for all sorts of CUTOFF (center frequency) controlled "mixing" of input signals.
Due to the unique way it's inventor injected the inputs into the internal signal path, they tend to slightly interact with each other and the control voltages, making the 1021 a bit more organic and unpredictable than many other synth filters. The RESONANCE also interacts with the CUTOFF adding an additional natural touch and warmth.
But if you really crank the RESONANCE up, you can make all that warmth go out the window because at or near oscillation, the 1021 starts to squeal and complain like a school girl tantrum.
There’s a hidden feature built into the Cutoff frequency knob. When pressed in, the 1021 switches to a “warm mode” that allows more subtle control over its settings. Pull the knob and you go right back to the original crazy Steiner – but watch your speakers and ears. Dogs run for the hills in this mode!"

Serge1973VCF Demo
Published on Jul 9, 2014 davidryle
"A MOTM format build of the famous Serge 1973 VCF. This is a Ken Stone pcb from Cat Girl Synth and is numbered CGS77.
The additions are the Hi and Lo Q resonance settings and a "low frequency" mode for slew of control voltages (DC).
The panel graphic maintains the Serge philosophy with a printed paper laminate on a metal panel. The obvious difference is the MOTM (Synthesis Technology) format.
This demo only demonstrates the 2 pole -12dB Low Pass mode. The filter also has a -6dB band pass and -12dB high pass mode which are very nice as well.
There are some background voices which I decided to include for temporal flavor. Everything is from the modular synthesizer except the echo delays which are a Lexicon and T.C. Electronic rack units after the modular.
Thanks to Ken Stone at CGS
