Bad Gear - Expensive and Noisy
video upload by AudioPilz
"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Although this channel is often associated with enervating noise , my work environment is so calm I can tune a vintage synth to my tinnitus and I stick to low mixing volumes to avoid ear fatigue.
However, a few days back I received this Audio Motor Synth MKII directly from Gamechanger as a long term loan and believe me - the peace and quiet is gone.

MotorSynth MK2 | By Gamechanger Audio
video upload by Cinematic Laboratory
"When the first Motor Synth was introduced back in 2019, the synth community unanimously agreed to disagree. For some the MOTOR Synth appeared to be a completely ridiculous, overengineered and limited instrument - at one point the phrase “pure embodiment of evil hipster trash” was used, while others called it one of the most innovative and exciting instrument designs the industry had seen in years. The truth lies somewhere in the middle and I feel it's MUCH better and cooler than people think it is.
However, spending 3K on it doesn't make it yours. It's packed with so many features you'll need to find your own gemstones buried in the trash. After spending four days with this unit (on loan, not mine) I realized theirs true magic when it's limitations are starting to work against it. It excels when it fails. Please note, this unit makes a LOT of noise even when it's not connected to any amp or audio interface. Still, the mechanical noise is an essential part of the final experience and you should always record it, even when you decide not to use it later. Most of my recordings in this video has the camera audio, attenuated at -10 dB. It's really loud, but it's not a motor synth without it.
The synth is simply too expensive to make this a review, and I don't do reviews anyway. I try to focus on production value. If you're a pro composer for films and games, this thing is a highly recommended no brainer. The same applies for evil hipsters. If not, try to borrow one from an evil hipster and sample the hell out of it.
Big thanks to Gamechanger Audio for letting me borrow it. This video is sponsored by me, no money changed hands and I can't keep it.

Gamechanger Audio MotorSynth // Electric AND Acoustic Exploration // No Talking
video upload by LESINDES
"GAMECHANGER Audio adopts the TONE WHEEL principal of HAMMOND ORGANS for synthesizers for the first time. Instead of OSCILLATORS there are 8 TONE WHEELS (physically rotating discs) creating the basic waves. These rotating wheel are more then well audible. I was a bit surprised how loud these wheels were. Although I had tested the synth on SUPERBOOTH 2019 whre GAMECHANGER presented their prototype. But the noise floor of the convention (what a surprise :-)) was much louder than my regular studio ambience. So in this demo recorded the acoustic behaviour of the synth as well which led to this short demo sequence repeated 3 times to give you an idea of the the work with the synth:
Phase 1: Pure electric signal
Phase 2: Pure electric signal + Studio ambience
Phase 3: Studio ambience only, mainly acoustic noise/resonances of the MOTORSYNTH"

Floyd went to Superbooth 23 and all he got was this jute bag +info on Aodyo Anyma Omega, Motor Synth MkII
video upload by Floyd Steinberg
"Here's what I saw / wanted to see at #Superbooth 23, plus some impressions of the event itself. I talked with @AodyoInstruments about their line of hardware modeling synths, Anyma PHI, Sylphyo and #Anyma OMEGA (thanks again for taking so much time to walk through the features!). Also a presentation of the @GamechangerAudio #Motorsynth MKII, which I already filmed last year but never got around to turn into a video.
Please forgive me if I mispronounced names / got them wrong entirely. I lost some of the business cards on the way back. My bad.

The Cars - "Drive" cover, but it's all #Motorsynth
video upload by Floyd Steinberg
"Here's a cover of the classic 80s synthpop hit, 'Drive' by 'The Cars'.
All sounds are from the #MotorSynth but the drums, those are from the Yamaha #QY70.
If you didn't know, Motor Synth is an electromechanical #synthesizer which creates sounds by spinning 8 discs super fast. You can either use all 8 voices paraphonic or two of them each polyphonic. There's a selection of analog filters & envelopes which I put to good use here.
Due to it's inertia, this synth always is playing glissando ;-)
Given the tech at hand, I didn't even try to match the sound to the original, but more tried to capture it's athmosphere. Sorry for the mediocre karaoke vocal track, but I think it's good enough.
This was super fun and if this gets some views maybe I'll do more (you can suggest songs if you like)
Let's see if this gets a copyright claim.

SynthPlex 2022 - Gamechanger Audio Motorsynth MKII Is Shipping
video upload by sonicstate
"The Motor Synth from Gamechanger Audio has always been a crowd pleaser, since we first saw it at 2017 Winter NAMM. Its a really unusual electro-mechanical way to generate audio - using stepper motors and optical readouts to make oscillators. Its got a unique sound and looks great.
The MKII which we saw in prototype at Superbooth earlier this year, is now ready and shipping, we got a demo of a recent patch from Tom at the booth.
Price €2726"

Superbooth 22: Gamechanger Audio - Motorsynth MK2
video upload by sonicstate
"When the Motorsynth was first unveiled at Superbooth 19, it certainly was a game changer, with its spinning motor oscillators.
Three years have passed, and Ilja from Gamechanger has listened to feedback from the initial run of 450 Motorsynths, and returns with the MK2, improving upon the original designs.
The Motorsynth MK2 offers two separate motor voices with 4 electromotor oscillators each - both voices can operate in mono, unison or in four-note polyphonic mode. Both motor voices are equipped with a separate set of controls for adjusting volume, scale, waveshape, individual amp envelope engines for each musical note, as well as separate analogue multimode filters.
The first units will arrive summer 22
Price: TBC - around 3,000 euros"

Synthesizer impovisation on MPC One, Yamaha EX5, Novation Peak, Motorsynth, Guitar, Piano
video upload by Floyd Steinberg
"Are you feeling a bit more happy and cheerful today than you'd like to be? We have a fix for that. ;-) This is fully improvised. #MPCOne is playing the 808 drums, #YamahaEX5 the "Big Bad Pad" from my patch set, Peak is doing the arpeggiated notes and #MotorSynth is used for a short solo in the middle part. Guitar is in Humbucker mode, using a compressor, Iridium, Zoom Noisegate, Zoom Chorus, Volante, Nightsky signal chain. Piano was recorded as-is."

DIY WebMIDI sequencer demo: improvising on Motor Synth, Reface DX and Orba
video upload by Floyd Steinberg
"Here's a demo of the progress I made on my own #WebMIDI/Javascript sequencer. In this demo:
- LEDs used for showing status (selected track, active step)
- track muting
- swing!
- copying patterns while playing
- transposing tracks while playing.
- switching and queueing tracks while playing
This sequencer will work in Edge and Chrome(ium). You can try it at https://sequencer.floydsteinberg.com
Feel free to take a look at the source code. I'll also upload a video explaining how it works later.
Synths used:
#MotorSynth for the arpeggiated chords
#RefaceDX for pads and EP
Orba for drums and bass
Effects:
Strymon NightSky
Perhaps not the hottest improv under the sun, but I think there are some nice moments in there."

Track: Shelter (feat. Xavier Radix) - Synthwave on Akai MPC, Motor Synth, Peak, EX5
video by
"Here's a #synthwave track done on the Akai MPC One, #motorsynth and Novation PEAK. Sidechaining! Gated drums! Tons of synths! Wicked 80s hair metal guitar solo and phatt riffs! Wub wub bass! Jan Hammer-inspired synth sequences! It's all in here. :-)
Guitar by Xavier Radix (see link below). Recorded, mixed and mastered on Zoom R24 #dawless. This is the MPC One in song mode controlling the EX5, PEAK and Motor Synth via MIDI. The song is made up from 14 patterns on the MPC one, which I merged into one long pattern and added the guitar and the vocal track to. Basically, all you need to do then is to press play in song mode and capture the audio output on a recording device (if you're using only MPC, you can also render the output to a WAV file internally). For the sake of this video, I adjusted filter settings and played some notes "live". :-)
MPC One is doing all the heavy lifting here, Motor Synth is doing the "filtered choir" sound in the second verse. EX5 is doing the "rain pad" in the 2nd verse. PEAK is doing the arpeggiated sequencer line. I don't know which effects Xavier had on his guitar, but it sounds pretty awesome.

Motor Synth - dark, ambient woodworking in the night
Floyd Steinberg
"Here's your reminder that the #MotorSynth deserves more attention and fanfare and is very capable of creating great-sounding melodic #electromechanical #ambient music. Motor Synth is an electromechanical synthesizer which generates sound by spinning drone motors. All the sounds in this track were created on this machine and recorded to 4 tracks one after the other (pad, bass, arpeggiator, lead). I used the 'arpeggiator per oscillator' feature on this track for the bass patch and the filtered saw wave thing.
Effects pedals were set up like this: Motor Synth - Strymon Iridium - ZOOM MS100BT - Source Audio Nemesis - Strymon BigSky
Hope you like it, and apologies to @Gamechanger Audio for the practical cinematographic jokes therein. Hope you take it lightly. :-) :-) :-) (In fact, those guys and girls are very cool and sent me hardware revision containing dampers yesterday, so you will see the new and much less noisy version of this machine again in the future)."
