Erebus Grimm - DAWless Jam (TEO 5, Deluge, Taiga, DFAM, Mother 32, B Drum, Sub H, NYX)
video upload by Oakland Ghosts
"I wanted to create a dark sort of melancholy. A fall season sound.
This one started with a patch I built on the TEO 5, and very strange patch on the Taiga. I stole one of the oscillators from the taiga to build a dual oscillator patch on the Mother 32 and then got weird with percussion on the DFAM and the Bastle Drum.
Jim came in and nailed some atmospheric guitars - no easy task for a song that was all vibe no chord progression- Ram Das samples to keep it moving forward, and a @johnnybakecake mix to lock in the melancholy vibe and bring it all together.

Impact Soundworks Releases Chro-Nyx, New Virtual Synth Based on Classic Hardware
video upload by Impact Soundworks LLC
FULTON, MD – Impact Soundworks has released Chro-Nyx, a virtual synth that faithfully recreates the beloved JP-8080 synthesizer as well as elements from other popular hardware such as the Access Virus, Nord Modular 2, Korg Mono/Poly, Roland Jupiter-8, and others. With extensive oscillators, filter models, effects, and modulation capabilities, this virtual synth (available in VST, AU, and AAX formats via Reaktor Player) allows producers to create a huge range of possible tones.
Developed over the course of 5 years, Chro-Nyx captures the look, feel, and sound of the JP-8080, an early analog modeling synth that revolutionized digital music in the 1990s (most notably by introducing the supersaw oscillator).
Chro-Nyx then goes far beyond their original capabilities, integrating components from other vintage analog and digital hardware, along with unique and custom DSP, resulting in a feature-packed virtual synth workstation suitable for many genres.
Highlights of Chro-Nyx beyond the complete feature set of the JP-8080 include:
Dual oscillators with 31 oscillator types, each with unique parameters, and many emulating specific hardware
Dual filters with multiple topologies, slopes, and 5 styles available, such as ‘Classic’, ‘Acid’, ‘Lush’, etc.
18 filter drive types and a unique ‘BOOST’ mode that allows for extreme distortion and circuit bending-style effects
Dual LFOs that can go from extremely slow to audio rate speeds
Combination step sequencer and arpeggiator with optional trance gate
16-slot modulation matrix with Eurorack-style math sources also available
Dual effects slots with 29 modules available including shimmer reverbs, choruses, waveshapers, etc.
External audio input for processing through the full signal chain
Analog-modeled Pre and Post-FX EQs
8080-style vocoder with expanded controls, as well as 12-band resonant filterbank
Chro-Nyx was developed in partnership with Jasper Broeks (Chrono), a DJ, hardcore artist, and programmer who has worked with numerous well-known artists and performed at many festivals around the world. He creates his own synths under the Pulsecraft name.
“As an EDM musician myself, I’ve been collecting both softsynths and hardware for over 20 years, which is how I know that it takes a lot for a new synth to stand out. But having spent over 50 hours producing with Chro-Nyx, I’m in love, and I can’t wait to hear how other musicians use it!” CEO and owner Andrew Aversa said.
Chro-Nyx is available at the Impact Soundworks store for a limited-time introductory price of $79 (MSRP $99). Crossgrades are available for some customers.

Explaining the PlayFader CV/MIDI Sequencer
video upload by mylarmelodies
"In this tutorial/demo I’ll explain the unique way the Playfader CV/MIDI sequencer works, showing the basic keystrokes you need to be able to make, erase, transpose, mute and apply temporary effects to sequences. I’ll also keep the shortcuts onscreen so you don’t need to remember them.
I'm using the Dreadbox NYX, Music Thing Workshop and Roland T-8 here. T-8 supplies clock to the PlayFader. PlayFader sends CV/Gate to the two analog synths.

Best Budget Synth 2024 // Dreadbox NYX Reissue
video upload by Starsky Carr
"Review and demo of this stunning little synth, that I'm calling my best budget synth of 2024. It sounds exactly like you'd expect from Dreadbox... The NYX Reissue sounds MASSIVE ... and luxurious, bur it's got not very hidden depths. With a knob per functioin there's not a lot of hiding1 But unless you look deeper you might miss its 4 LFOs, 3 AR/ASR envelopes, 2 glides, 2 filters, HP/LP series/parallel.."

Machina Bristronica 2024
video uploads by sonicstate
Playlist:
1. Bristronica 24: MyVolts The Silent Alchemist Nears Shipping
We caught up with Caroline who gave us the latest update to the *Silent Alchemist*, a versatile power hub designed for musicians. Featuring five isolated USB-C outputs and a high-wattage sixth output capable of delivering 100 watts, the device can power a Mac with the remaining outputs providing 20 watts each. Its independent circuits ensure noise-free operation, catering to a variety of devices including the Dreadbox module and Sysmo slope generator.2. Bristronica 24: Circuit Happy ML2M Clock Sync module updates
The Silent Alchemist uses innovative step-up power tips to convert USB-C input to the correct voltage for various devices. There's also new feature: an uninterruptible power supply allowing seamless transition between wall and power bank sources. Also introduced were updated cables, such as silver candy cords and floating ring TRS to TS cables, expanding connection flexibility. The Silent Alchemist is expected to be available in December with a competitive pricing strategy.

At Bristronica 2024, we caught up with the creator of the *ML2M*, who introduced us to the latest version. The ML2M is a compact Eurorack module with Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing seamless synchronization with Ableton Live, Bitwig Studio, and iOS music apps using Ableton Link without the need for cables. It either connects to an existing network or creates its own, ensuring robust sync even in environments with unreliable Wi-Fi. The module, which retains its 2HP size, now features MIDI integration through TRS jacks. Users can access a web interface to configure each output for different clock divisions and reset triggers, making setup straightforward and flexible.3. Bristronica 24: Archaea Exchange Patching Module
Alongside the ML2M, there's also the Missing Link Junior. This desktop version offers the same functionality but in a box format, complete with MIDI and CV clock outputs. Both products are now accessible, with a starting price of $250.
At Machina Bristronica 2024, we caught up with Arran from @archaea_modular_synthesis who presented the *Exchange Module*. This programmable patcher, a year in the making, evolved from its early prototype stage to a fully functional module. Arran explained how the Exchange can route synth voices via a beam controller and three exchange modules installed within the skiff, allowing for versatile patching. Operating like a matrix patchbay, it enables users to select inputs and outputs with the push of a button, create presets, and chain multiple modules for synchronized patching.
Communication between the modules occurs over the Eurorack power bus as well as over MIDI via the USB-C connection. The Exchange maintains analog integrity, ensuring there’s no conversion latency. The forthcoming release expected in late November 2024, includes a USB-driven editor for enhanced control capabilities.

1984 Akai AX-80: 17 more great sounds
video upload by Valmont
"I played for hours straight so I had to change my camera's battery 4 times and my SD card, then assembling and sorting all the cuts I realized it moved a bit, sorry for that!
One of the great thing with the AX80 is the stability: it doesn't move of a single cent, which is fundamentally important for live performances! (Also there are 64 presets it's nice). More than being stable, it's also really in tune thanks DCOs drivers. (too much in tune..?)
It's nice to know this synth has a double-mode crossmod section, an ADSR to DCO routing and an additional sub waveform. On 8 voices so it goes big! I especially like the crossmod. It's not as versatile as a Prophet 600, but it does have a sonic difference. The filters are a question of taste, I'm into the 2044 reference and those CEMs don't sound quite the same, they have a more aggressive resonance... They're just different (in a CEM way by definition :p)
And well that look, with astonishing neon LEDs behind opaque plexiglass, and this fantastic keyboard feel! Oyy we don't speak enough about it, but it's amazing, it's perfectly balanced and nice to play with.
As usual with mono sources, I preamped the AX-80 thru a Golden Age Premier PREQ-73, and since the Akai output level is super high it easily went on overdrive. The Akai doesn't drive by itself, it's on the contrary really clean!

Dreadbox Synths + Korg NTS-1 Synth Jam - Friday Fun
video upload by sonicstate
"This one came up fast and dirty - we were just about to break down the set for working on a new review and this just sort of happened. Yes its pretty derrivative ( we think that top line might be property of Mr Vangelis), but we thought it had a vibe and its got a thoroughly Greek vibe.

New Dreadbox 6 Voice NY Synth Coming in September?
This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.
It appears Dreadbox is working on a 6 Voice NY synth and it's coming at the end of September. Their previous synth with NY in the title was the 2 VCO paraphonic NYX. They also had the 4 voice ABYSS.
Note the 2nd image below is a vote for the color: Dark Blue or Black. I'm guessing the top half of the image is the blue and the bottom the black to give you an idea of the color scheme for each.
The pink font gives off the the 80s vibe of the Erebus V3 limited edition and the HYPNOSIS.
Update: you can find a glimpse of it and the new Abyss MK2 here.
