Novation SUMMIT // A 2025 Synth from 2019... and beyond!!

video upload by Starsky Carr

"Sonically we're in control iykyk :) .... Coming out of Leftfield - was the market ready for the Novation SUMMIT and PEAK FPGA oscillators back in 2018? Did we really understand what they were? .. digital .. yes, but not as we knew it, not old school tech type of digital.

Get my SUMMIT and Peak Patches here:
Vintage Classics https://www.starskycarr.com/patches/p...
Oberheim https://www.starskycarr.com/patches/p...

Clocking at 24MHz these were something new. Bringing out a hybrid when everyone was going analog crazy was a brave move, but one that's still paying dividends.

Building on ideas from vintage classics, it seems to have come from the future... well ahead of it's time - it's always been a 2025 synth but was originally released in 2019.

AND - it's packed full of features...

In this I look at some of the more overlooked features, and the flexibility. In my previous demos i've showed how it can emulate the functions of loads of classic synths, so in this i take it a little further. Looking at binaural mode, complex modulation, 3 distortions, dual filter modes and wavetables.

... and a big thanks to ‪@AlexBallMusic‬ for his cameo :)"

Beetlecrab Tempera Granular Ambient

video upload by r beny

Click CC at the bottom of the player for the subtitles.

"Hello, I hope you are taking care. This video is a performance centered around the Beetlecrab Tempera granular sampler/synthesizer. My intention was to create a long form piece of music using only the Tempera, outside of sequencing (as Tempera currently doesn’t have a note sequencer).

I’ve had the Tempera for a while now, but have only recently gotten around to really getting to know it well - learning its ins and outs, learning its boundaries and edges. When learning a new granular instrument, one of the first things I like to do is figure out the relationship between grain length/size and grain density/rate. Tempera is quite unique in that regard, as grain sizes can span the entire length of the buffer (~11s in this instance) - this allows for one to play back entire samples as-is (polyphonically as well), without being “granularized”. On the other end of the spectrum, Tempera also excels at creating grain clouds with an abundance of short grains all firing off at once. I make use of both of these techniques in this video.

Some patch notes:
Tempera is loaded with 8 different samples from various sound sources from my studio. Each sample is just a single note of the sound source, recorded directly to Tempera. Tempera has a note detection feature, so each note was recorded at slightly different notes (mostly either A or C).

From to left to right across the 8 cells, the samples are:
Mannequins Mangrove
Mutable Instruments Rings (patched to make a “harp” sound)
Mangrove with another timbre
Korg Z1 (with a “flute patch”, which I didn’t end up using in this video)
Rings (patched to make a “glockenspiel” sound)
Korg Z1 (with a “bassoon” patch)
Felt Instruments Blisko Cello (with a Sul Tasto patch with only a single string)
Novation Summit (with a pad patch)

In the video, I use the 4 granular emitters in conjunction with sequencing from the Squarp Hapax to sequence and play the various samples across the grid. Emitter 1 is set up to play just a single grain per note, with a grain length that matches the entire buffer. Emitters 2-4 are set up in various grain cloud formations.

The Tempera is running the latest beta firmware as of 6/24/25 (2.2.beta13, shoutout to the Discord).

This is a long one. Thanks for stopping by and sticking with."

Cascade 05 | Synthesizer Ambient with Novation Summit

video upload by Moon Kyoo

"Two weeks in Korea felt like 5 days, leaving with some good memories 🏊 Here's my last jam of the trip, ambient as usual with a bit of late-night vibes.

Everything here was recorded live with the Novation Summit, with a sub layer added by pitching the original recordings down an octave."

Turning the SUMMIT or PEAK into an Oberheim

video upload by Starsky Carr

"Its remarkably easy to do the Oberheim thing on a Novation SUMMIT or PEAK I attempted to recreate a few of my favourite OB-X8 patches and the SUMMIT sounded amazingly close.

So I've looked a bit deeper and come up with some simple rules to stick within the limitations of the Vintage Oberheim to get those classic tones.

.. and it works a treat :)

Novation Summit Doing that Binaural Thing

video upload by Starsky Carr

"A little track I've made for a SUMMIT deep dive video... every time I use this thing it opens up a couple more secrets.

This time I tried some binaural tones, using my Oberheim sound bank I've been working on.. like having a binaural OB-X8 !!"

Setting Up...

video upload by No Lake

"Just a few words to let you know that I'm still here. I'm currently working on the new era of my music. It's heading in the direction I wanted it to go. I introduced you to the concept of Brussels School, which means everything and nothing, and I realize that it's ultimately something that suits me.

So what's next? I'll gradually introduce you to jams based on this concept. Rather long pieces that take the time to establish an atmosphere. Something absorbing, bewitching, with a hypnotic and almost insidious rhythm. Something along the lines of "Illusion" or "Hypnosis," which were two of the channel's top three hits. I take this as proof that I'm on the right path.

As explained three weeks ago, there will no longer be videos every week. They will arrive when they arrive. The long-term idea is to rework all these jams to create a real album centered around a single philosophy, but this is another story for later.

Wishing you a great day! See you soon.

"Speaking of Analog" | the album (electronic-ambient music)

video upload by No Lake

"I remastered and compiled my Moog Mother-32 and Subharmonicon jams to create a cohesive series composed almost entirely on these two machines. It was the success of these jams that motivated me to bring them together. Some of these pieces are unreleased. In this very special album, the Novation Summit is just there to add the finishing touch; like a support in the shadows. The Moogs are kings for this album. Take the time you need to enjoy it.

This album is available on every streaming service and feel free to ask for Bandcamp keys, I'll be very happy to offer them to you.

Novation Summit semi-generated meditative ambient music

video upload by No Lake

"'Creativity is the ability to introduce order in the randomness of nature'. (Eric Hoffer)

Heaphones on, eyes closed.

Little reminder of how I do this: I created several self-generating patches that play simultaneously and several sequences with modulation frequencies. The three LFOs of the Summit are playing ping-pong with each other. Of course, everything follows predefined rules to avoid a complete mess, it is NOT AI music. The LFO's just "modulate together" in harmony. It's basically FM synthesis. But FM can be hazardous, eventful or even crazy. It takes time to reach something pleasant and relaxing.

The Novation Summit and the Novation Peak do have a strong FM engine and these synths can be turned into a modular synthesizer. Then I just had to add some real-time effects on everything and off we go."
