Oberheim Legacy: In 1974, Tom Oberheim imagined a small synth as an accessory to his DS-2A digital sequencer. But it was Dennis P Collins, a gifted ARP engineer, who designed the multimode filter of the Synth Expander Module (SEM). This unique filter is a 12 db filter that cannot deny its lineage with the ARP 1047 (ARP 2500) and ARP 2023 (white Odyssey MK1) filters, 12 db filters also designed by Dennis P Collins. With two very fat VCOs and a devastating sync (also close to the Odyssey VCOs), the small SEM offers a powerful sound, very present in the mix and very different from Moog and other synths with 24 db filters. So despite its simplicity and a filter that does not enter self-oscillation, we can get a lot of sounds out of it. Accessible and easy to use, the SEM is a success. In 1975, Tom paired first two, then four, into a huge keyboard case, creating the first "true" polyphonic instrument in history, the "Four Voices." In 1976, the SEM was even expanded to eight. Nicknamed the "White Elephant," its sound was as enormous as the instrument itself! But in 1978, the brilliant Prophet-5 made it obsolete, and Tom designed the OB-X, whose channel cards were also clones of the SEM. Subsequently, the OB-XA and OB-8 used Curtis chipsets and no longer had quite the same sound. In 2010, Oberheim reissued the SEM identically, but with all surface-mount components. In 2011, the SEM PRO added just a MIDI interface.

NRsynth "Solo": This is an "extended" version of the SEM, handcrafted with traditional through-hole components. Only the envelopes have been modified for a punchier result; the rest is identical to the original synth. Additionally, the Solo features a sub-oscillator, a glide, white noise, and many more modulation options than the SEM. MIDI velocity is also supported. Finally, the white metal case gives way to a luxurious, classically crafted cabinet with waxed oak sides and black tolex, similar to a Marshall amp.

A patchbook of all Séraphin Palmeri's sounds is included with the device.

Specifications:

VCO: Two discrete VCOs with hard sync, saw, pulse + PW (same as SEM)
Sub-oscillator: Pulse wave – 1 octave below VCO1.
Noise: 100% analog white noise
Multimode 12 dB filter: Same as SEM with LPF, HPF, notch, and bandpass mode. VCA: Analog (same as SEM)

Digital LFO: 8 waveforms + tilt, 3 frequency ranges, sync.

MPC X Session: Akai Mini D, Jura, and Casio SA-46

video upload by Retrothusiast

"Join me for another creative MPC X session as I expand on a song idea that started with a simple bass line on my son’s Casio SA-46. Using the Akai Mini D plugin, I recreated the bass sequence and layered it with lush bells and arpeggios from the JURA plugin. All of this was produced directly on the retro-inspired MPC X SE, with my Prophet 10 acting as a MIDI controller.

This session showcases the power of the MPC X and Akai’s incredible plugin suite, proving you don’t need external instruments to create a full-sounding track.

video upload by Retrothusiast

"Join me in this exciting recording session featuring the Tascam 388, a classic multitrack recorder that's stood the test of time. Starting with a groovy drum beat crafted on the Yamaha RX11, I sequenced the rhythm alongside a deep, punchy bassline from the Prophet 10 using the powerful MPC X. From there, I tracked everything in stereo on the Tascam 388, laying down the foundation for an inspiring retro music production. Adding to the mix, I recorded two guitar tracks through the versatile Line6 HX Stomp XL, and wrapped it up with a live synth performance on the Prophet 10, bringing the session to life.

MKDVB - Behind Spaces (Sequential Pro 3 track w/ Sequential Prophet X, live bass, drum loops)

video upload by MKDVB

"Synths: Sequential Pro 3, Sequential Prophet X, Modal Cobalt 8 all played by Davy Bui
Bass: Davy Bui except outro by Matthew Kretzman.

Recorded at Santo Recording Studio, Oakland, CA in August 2024.
Zachary James Watkins: engineer

Thanks to ByLy for shooting the footage.

This track has been a couple years in the making. It's been written for awhile but it took me some time to improve enough to be somewhat satisfied with the lead. I'm grateful for this track teaching me the fine margins and how a collection of notes can become music. I'm also grateful for the bassline -- it's one of my favorites."

J3PO King Korg Neo Presets -- Official Sounds Demo

video upload by J3PO

"You can purchase the preset pack here:
https://www.julianpollack.com/shop
The introductory price is $29.

All FX (chorus, reverbs, delays, etc.) are coming from within the patches themselves i.e. there's no other external processing on this demo save for some slight light leveling/compression for the purpose of uploading to YouTube.

The King Korg Neo is an unexpected gem, challenging assumptions about what a compact, portable, digital synth can be. Its sound is both vibrant and complex, weaving warm, analog-like textures with modern digital tones that feel raw yet polished. With a bold 24-voice polyphony and versatile oscillators, the King Korg Neo manages to feel timeless and forward-looking, carrying an unmistakable authenticity.

I also have patches available for the Prophet Rev 2, Prophet 6, OB-6, OB-X8, Prophet 5/10, Softube Model 84, Model 72, Arturia OB-Xa, Arturia Stage-73 and many others. If you're a Nord Stage 3 user, download my bank from the Nord Keyboards website. I have a sample pack, "J3PO x The Ox" (hip hop and soul keyboard and drum loops) available on Splice.

About the sound designer: Julian “J3PO” Pollack is a Los Angeles-based pianist/keyboardist and producer described by Timeout New York as a musician who “deftly balances virtuosity with tenderness.” Julian is known for his innovative use of keyboards and synthesizers in jazz, fusion, hip-hop, and electronic styles of music. Julian has toured extensively with the legendary artists Marcus Miller and Chris Botti, as well as performing with greats such as Herbie Hancock, Talib Kweli, David Sanborn, Michael League, Eric Harland, and others. Julian has worked closely as a sound designer with keyboard/synth companies Nord Keyboards, Sequential, and Oberheim, and has created factory presets for the Prophet 5, the Oberheim OB-X8, Take 5, Nord Stage 3, Nord Wave 2, and many others. In addition to these hardware keyboard companies, Julian also has done sound design for Universal Audio, Softube, and Cherry Audio.

Introducing the Sequential Prophet-10 Special Edition

Press release follows:

San Francisco, CA – [October, 22nd, 2024] – As part of the 50 Years of Sequential celebration, the renowned synthesizer company proudly announces the launch of the Prophet-10 Special Edition, a tribute to half a century of groundbreaking innovation in analog synthesis. This exclusive edition, with only 150 made, features exquisite lacewood panels that make each instrument a unique masterpiece.

The All-Natural Elegance of Lacewood
While the electronics are identical to the existing Prophet-10 Rev4, the Special Edition is distinguished by its stunning lacewood panels. Sourced from the lush forests of South America, lacewood is celebrated for its intricate grain patterns that create beautiful and varied designs. This exceptional wood not only enhances the visual allure of the Prophet-10 but also honors the long-held tradition of using fine woods in classic analog instruments.

A Collector's Dream
With only 150 in existence, the Prophet-10 Special Edition is a rare opportunity for discerning collectors. Each synthesizer comes with a certificate of authenticity, recording its specific serial number, and an embroidered dust cover, ensuring that this piece of musical history is preserved in pristine condition for decades to come.

The Return of a Legend
The Prophet-10 is Dave Smith’s ten-voice version of the analog poly synth that revolutionized the music world. Known for its warm, organic, and dynamic sound, the Prophet-10 combines all three revisions of the legendary Prophet-5 synth — Rev1, Rev2, and Rev3 — with a Rev switch that allows users to choose between the two distinct filter designs. The Prophet-10 Special Edition also includes the Vintage knob to fine tune instrument’s character, Poly Mod for wide timbral flexibility, and velocity sensitivity and aftertouch for new levels of expression beyond the 1970s Prophets, making it as versatile as it is powerful.

Experience the Prophet-10 Special Edition
Sequential invites professional musicians, collectors, and dedicated synth enthusiasts to experience the Prophet-10 Special Edition. This deeply organic lacewood edition is more than an instrument; it's a piece of history, a testament to Sequential's unwavering commitment to creating inspiring instruments for generations of artists.

"Even more of a classic than the OB-Xa, this beauty from around 1981 has been fully serviced in August 2024. It has a very unusual and useful mod where the cassette level switch is re-purposed as a noise switch and the filter can be multi-mode. ***More info: OB-X filter mod based on SEM. The mod uses the repurposed Noise buttons to choose LP/ Band/ HP Filters. Therefore patches can be saved with filter type setting. The noise modes are now accessible via the Cassette Monitor Switch. The new switch for cassette monitor is now mounted inside the synth. Considering the Memory Protect switch is already inside the synth and needs to be switched when loading patches from cassette (or these days a WAV), this new location is not an inconvenience. Most importantly the mods are all non-destructive and can be removed if desired. Also utilises the Magnetic RAM card so no battery is needed http://www.electrongate.com/dmxfiles/mram.html *** Very similar serial number (804109) to the Radiophonic Workshop OB-X, which was 804204. Unusual, really, to have the full eight voices from the factory, because the 6-voice seemed more affordable at the time and still beat the Prophet-5. The price in today's money would have been 16500GBP. Packing 30GBP to include a UK or Euro mains lead."

Prophet X - Overwrite factory memory | Sysex patch edit tutorial

video upload by Espen Kraft

"If you receive a bunch of patches (both individual files or whole banks) for your Prophet X, you might not want to have these saved at the same locations they come in.
If you receive a patch that was saved in Bank U2 Patch 90, this will go into THAT memory location on your Prophet X as well, when you transfer it. Unfortunately you can't put it in another memory location when you transfer it. You can of course save it to some place else after you've transferred it to Patch 90 (this example), but only to the 4 different U-banks.
UNLESS.... you edit the sysex file itself before transferring it to your own PX. By doing so you can set it to go exactly where you want. You can even overwrite the factory patches if you want. All banks and patches U1-U4, F1-F4 and A1-A4 can be overwritten in the sysex transfer.

I'm fully aware there exists several library apps and software for the Prophet X that will help you do this. These costs money. My method is totally free.

In this video I'm using a free binary decoder called HdX to load, inspect, edit and save a sysex file. I'm using Bome SendSX to transfer the edited sysex file from my computer to my PX.
Both these programs are free.
You can certainly edit the sysex file from within the transfer program itself as well."

How to make 80s thriller/slasher/giallo music | Tutorial and breakdown

video upload by Espen Kraft

"How to make a thriller/slasher track with both old and new synths, samplers and drum machines. Put together and mixed as it would have sounded coming out an 80s movie.
I've always been a huge fan of the "giallo" thriller/slasher movie subgenre championed by Italian directors like Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Sergie Martino and more.
These movies often had absolutely mind-blowing violence topped with fantastic music.
One of these composers, Claudio Simonetti did many awesome tracks for Dario Argento, and among them the themes from 'Tenebre' (Tenebrae) a thriller in the giallo style, from 1982.
Another composer I draw a lot from is Fabio Frizzi. His work with Lucio Fulci has always been a great source of inspiration to me.

Midnight Drive 5 is my go at making a similar styled track. I've gone overboard with the intro which is supposed to be from a film, but these are all sound effects I've put together for this.

So, it's been almost 4 Years since I worked on the Prophet X and then released X-Plorations Vol 1. While it does have some amazing Factory Samples from 8DIO, which i have used, I was a little disappointed in the Synth Samples, so I sampled 14 of my Synths, just the Oscillators wide open over many Octaves and EVERY note.
