Minimalism for Modular #5: Hans Otte's Book of Sounds

video upload by Electrum Modular

"An introduction to the ethereal music of Hans Otte, via a modular interpretation of two parts (2 and 7) from his Book of Sounds (1979-82).

Also contains several ideas for generative/aleatory sequencing in a modular system: in particular, decoupling pitch and gate, combining a multi-channel sample player (Disting EX) with a sequencer that has per-step gate outputs (0-Ctrl), and using a series of probabilistic gates (Missed Opportunities) to distribute/alternate pitch variations.

0:00 Introduction
1:41 First patch (Book of Sounds, part 7)
6:28 Second patch (Book of Sounds, part 2)

For those new to Hans Otte’s music, I would recommend his own rendition of The Book of Sounds:

#techno Jam with #tesseract MODULAR - Tukra and Step Fader MKII feat Osiris and Ring

video upload by Flat Round Modular Music

"Two sequencers, one goal. Live live live.
They are very useful with no menus; One knob or one button, one function.
Simple in appearance, but powerful.
Maybe there look seems to be dated, but don't trust appearances, these are beast.

Minimalism for Modular #2: Ann Southam's "Rivers"

video upload by Electrum Modular

"I’ve been playing Ann Southam’s exquisite pieces on the piano for a few months, and have been discovering lots of ideas in them that could be applied to a modular system.

This video is also a tribute to a composer who should be a household name like Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley.

Tesseract Modular Vinia - multichannel audio generator and processor eurorack module

video upload by Tesseract Modular

"VINIA is a multichannel audio generator and processor eurorack module.

Patch description:
Vinia's channels 1 & 2 are a generating the bass. Several parameters of this sound are being modulated by different
layers of a macro, and that macro it's being controlled by the envelope of the channel 1.
Channel 3 is making the chords (with tube saturation).
Channel 4 has a sample player. The sample selection of this one is modulated by its mini sequencer, the amount of bit crusher and 'metalizer' are modulated by a macro which is controlled by a CV input (using Polar8 as manual CV source).
Channel 5 is doing the melody with a multi VCO (5 detuned voices oscillator).
Channel 6 is a delay (used in send/return with TexMix).
Channels 7 & 8 are a stereo plate reverb, used in send return too.
Main drums comes from Tukra. Melody and bass lines comes from Step Fader mkII and everything's mixed with TexMix."

Vinia it's an 8 audio channels multifunction eurorack module.

Tesseract Modular STONK - Joystick controller & looper

video upload by Tesseract Modular

"Tesseract Modular STONK - Joystick controller & looper
This video cover the basic functions."

"Stonk it's a joystick controller with 2 channels of CV and 2 of audio. It’s a CV generator, looper & audio processor.

Very hands on module which can be a sort of chaos pad or dj looper. Features:

2 audio in & out (AC coupled)
2 CV in & out (DC coupled) ±5V
2 extra CV outputs ±10V
12 illuminated push buttons
CV & Audio looper (2:30 per channel)
LFO
Euclidean envelope generator
Multimode Filter
Stereo Reverb
Wave Folder
VCA
The audio AD/DA is 24 bit, 48 KHz, the internal audio handle is 32 bit float.

The CV AD/DA is 16/12 bits, 12 KHz.

The extra CV outputs are the analog sum and difference of the CV outputs 1&2.

Each channel has 6 modes available. By default 2 parameters are assigned to the horizontal & vertical axes but this can be easily tweaked, so it’s possible to control any of them (frequency, symmetry, offset or amplitude of the LFO, for example) not only with the joystick but with the 2 CV inputs.

The polarity control & offset of every parameter can also be modified on every mode and every channel.

6 presets for store and recall not only the joystick assignment and settings but all the parameter values for all modes and channels."

Switches (Eurorack sequencing without sequencers)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"A sequential switch is an essential utility for modular music-making. But Disting EX's multi-switch offers up to SIX switches that can be configured in multiple ways: bidrectional, sequential, random, ping-pong, etc. And each switch is essentially a double switch: it can alternate its inputs AND outputs. Best of all, these sequences can work separately but they can also work together, sharing the same inputs and outputs. Or you could create nested switches.
Here's an experiment with sending three switches to the same output, to create a longer melodic sequence.

Switches + Faders = Power Sequencer!

video upload by Electrum Modular

"I love my main sequencer (Qu-bit Bloom), but it doesn’t have cv control over sequence length, direction, clock rate, glide, etc.
Then I realized that I had two ingredients to build a more patch-programmable sequencer:
Disting’s Multi-Switch mode, which offers up to 6 customizable switches, and a fader bank, Tesseract Modular's Sweet Sixteen...

Sonic sculptures (generative modular music)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"(For Paula)

This patch was inspired by hours (weeks?) of listening to Morton Feldman’s exquisite music. It ended up quite different harmonically from Feldman’s pieces, partly due to the limitations of a modular system. The envelope generators and attenuators required some tweaking to get that balance between repetition and divergence, revolving and evolving. In retrospect, I could have left longer silences between notes.
NOTE: no delay effect used here, as it would have reintroduced a pulse.

“Almost all of Feldman’s music is slow and soft. Only at first sight is this a limitation. I see it rather as a narrow door, to whose dimensions one has to adapt oneself (as in Alice in Wonderland) before one can pass through it into a state of being that is expressed in Feldman’s music. Only when one has become accustomed to the dimness of the light can one begin to perceive the richness and variety which is the material of the music...Feldman sees sounds as reverberating endlessly, never getting lost, changing their resonances as they die away, or rather not die away, but recede from our ears, and soft because softness is compelling, because an insidious invasion of our senses is more effective than a frontal attack.”” -- Cornelius Cardew, quoted by John Tilbury in “On Playing Feldman”

Last Time Playing This Patch Before Unplugging Everything

video upload by Izntrik

"Just a streamed synthesizer techno, electronic, and ambient jam session. Less polished than live shows, more for practice and experimentation. It's almost time to ruin this patch and move a bunch of modules around to expand my live setup into two eurorack cases instead of one. More drums, more control, more fun! Gets a little experimental at the end. Enjoy the synths!

Patch Notes:
Intellijel Metropolix is the sequencing Plaits and Doepfer A-111-6. Zadar is sidechaining, modulating morph on Plaits, and pulse width modulation on the Doepfer. Basimilus Iteritas Alter switches between quantized voltages from the Polar 8 and also sample and hold pitches from Metropolix with triggers from the euclidean sequencer running on Ornament and Crime Hemispheres, runs into the WMD C4RBN filter for wavefolding and saturation. Tesseract Modular Polar8 is controlling delays, drum density, resonance, saturation, A-111-6 pitch, euclidean offset, and BIA pitch. Prok and Pico Drums are being triggered by the 6equencer and Dnipro Dot. Endorphin Ghosts, ALM MFX, and Qu-Bit Prism for effects.

Befaco FX BOY // Gameboy based Eurorack FX with CV controlled EQ, Drives, Modulation, Delay & more!

video upload by DivKid

"Eurorack FX in Gameboy style cartridges that are hot swappable into a module with CV controlled parameters and a four band fully CV controlled EQ … YES PLEASE, WHAT A CONCEPT!

Beyond the obvious nostalgia hit of the Gameboy cartridges I’ve long been a fan of swappable FX platforms that allow a module to be used in a wider range of patches. FX BOY comes with 7 ‘founders pack’ cartridges with the Making Sound Machines Analog Wavefolder, FEEDBACK modules Flanger, XOR Electronics Delay & Granular FX, Instruo microPhaser, Befaco TRASH distortion, TouellSkouarn Noise & Feedback Fuzz and Tesseract Modular AVMA downsampled & ring modulator. It’s a wide range of FX all with two CV controlled parameters, plus CV over dry wet for parallel blends and modulation.

In this video I chose to give each cartridge it’s own patch, letting them shine on different patches with different use cases, as that’s how I’ll end up using the module going forward. However each cartridge easily warrants it’s own demo video going through a range of patches as these circuits have proven to be great on a range of sources. So I’m already thinking about future videos … leave a comment about what you’d like to see more of.

FX BOY is an open source platform for people to develop their own cartridge circuit FX, so who knows where this will go, whether Befaco release more cards, companies sell them on their own or whether it spawns some interest DIY ideas along the way."

Modular Day Barcelona 2023 after party - HRTL

video upload by Befacosynth

"There are few in the Czech electronic music culture with a background as storied as HRTL, the performing alias of Prague-based synthesiser musician Leoš Hort. Iconically performing from the centre of the dancefloor, HRTL is a force of the wildest nature on his instruments of choice, a carefully curated setup of modular synthesisers and tabletop instruments. Infamously electrifying and always improvised, each of his live club performances is quite literally one-of-a-kind; generative breakbeat rhythms meet with liquefying acid, and synths sliced from the utmost peaks of euphoria."

Allemande (Disting EX's Poly Wavetable)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"I've been working on the Allemande from J. S. Bach's French Suite No. 4 in E-flat, BWV 815, and was frustrated that I couldn't hear all those long, held notes. Rather than select one of its cheesy organ presets, I decided to connect the piano to my (smaller) Eurorack case. It worked well with all of the polyphonic algorithms on the Disting EX, but the Poly Wavetable gives you the most options for using keyboard velocity not just to control volume but also to shape the timbre - via filter cutoff, wavetable position, etc. I set the envelope times/levels/curves so that the held notes would remain audible, but in the background.

Here is how I connected the piano to the modular: USB Midi cable - DOREMIDI midi host - 5-pin MIDI cable - TRS adaptor cable - MIDIXO breakout, which connected to the rear of the Disting via 4-pin ribbon cable. If there's a more direct way to connect them, please let me know in the comments!

Hoquetus modularis (featuring Disting EX)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"Exploring the wonderful world of hocketing, using Disting EX's 'Chord Engine'.
Recorded "live", adding only EQ + compression in Logic Pro.

Patch is described in the video. Just one clarification: as the sequencer spits out a new note every 2 bars, and the voices take it in turns to be the recipient of that new note, each voice changes note every 8 bars. As there are 7 notes in the sequence, this piece effectively repeats itself every 56 bars.

The piece excerpted in the first few seconds is “In saeculum breve,” a motet by an anonymous French composer, from the 13th-century manuscript, the Bamberg Codex. To avoid incurring the wrath of the copyright gods, I made my own version, inputting midi into Logic Pro and using brass instrument instead of voices, and adding convolution reverb with an impulse file recorded in a large church.

Radioactive is a small but powerful 14-bit analog modelling voltage-controlled digital sound source: a complete voice Eurorack module in 6HP.
See https://www.tesseractmodular.com for more. Modules featured above:

TUKRA is an 8 track eurorack trigger sequencer with audio and midi.
This module can be an ‘all in one’ solution for drums in your rack, but it also has great integration capabilities with other gear (eurorack modules, drum boxes, DAWs, midi devices and midi surface controllers).
There are no submenus, all functions and views are accessible all the time.
Brief overview:
Up to 64 steps per pattern, 64 patterns, 64 parts and 16 songs per project. 64 projects in the microSD card.
Play mode, clock divider, length & choke settings independent per track & pattern.
Step value (can be used for modulation, to define the midi velocity, midi note & drum synth pitch or sample selection).
32 HP

FranKinksTides is a 18hp dual Tides (based on the Swirls pcb layout) with the max/min circuit from Kinks and some switches for sync, quadrature, pll and fm operation . It can be a double/complex oscillator, a dual function generator or any combination of oscillator, Lfo and Envelope generator with lots of cv control plus some interesting cross-modulation and sync features.
some improvements in version 1.2:
-Mix output is now buffered, no signal bleeding on single outs.
-Mix pot controls also the balance of the signals sent to the max/min circuit.
-Uni/bi switch now also determines the signal sent to FM1.
-Clock/sync switch has now a center OFF position, no need of plugging a dummy cable in the Clock1 when using Sheeps firmware to avoid ultra fast sound bank changes.
small improvements for DIY:
-Bigger font size on the pcb.
-Parts renumbered for easy DIY.
original design by Émilie Gillet

Also see the demo by Stefan Tretau here.

Radioactive is a small but powerful 14-bit analog modelling voltage-controlled digital sound source: a complete voice Eurorack module in 6HP. It consists of 3 simultaneous independent oscillators, voltage-controlled AR/ASR transient generator, voltage-controlled pitch slew (glide) and voltage-controlled waveshaper with 5 different modes, but that's just the beginning. Its forte consists of selectable gate/trigger/constant envelope timing signals, rather unique 3-voice polyphonic mode, semitone-quantized mode, voltage-controlled waveform selection, on-the-fly selectable 10Vpp CV input range with offset (except for Pitch), a few experimental features, and then some.
Under the hood, it's a chiptune-inspired wavetable-gnawing sound cruncher with a mind of it's own, and oh boy it's dirty. It could be described as raw and untamed, but it would probably be an understatement.
