tELHARMONIC 3-Voice Shift Register (Hidden Behavior)
Published on Nov 25, 2015 MAKEN0ISE
"3-Voice Shift Register
The tELHARMONIC Voltage Controlled Music Theory has an alternate behavior called 3-Voice Shift Register, which allows for creation of any triad based in the 12 tone scale.
To use 3-Voice Shift Register hold the H-Lock button for 2 seconds and watch for the change in the Color Staff that indicates 3-Voice Shift Register active (we should note exactly what this change is… I cannot recall, and a picture could be nice too).
3-Voice Shift Register changes the behavior of the DEGREE, D-Gate and INTERVAL controls.
At each pulse, gate, clock or trigger at the D-Gate IN, DEGREE updates the pitch of one of the three voices in the HARMONIC and PHASE MOD algorithms (the Noise algorithm is single voice, so its operation is un-changed). Each successive pulse, gate, clock or trigger at the D-Gate input causes the next voice to update its pitch based on the DEGREE parameter.
DEGREE does not change without anything patched to D-GATE.
Because D-Gate only sees rising edges, the normalization doesn't have any effect. You have to patch a pulse stream of some kind to D-GATE to achieve any DEGREE modulation.
INTERVAL determines which notes may be accessed by the DEGREE parameter. Starting from fully counterclockwise the possible settings are:
Suspended chord (1,4,5)
minor triad
Major triad
Octaves + fifths
Chromatic
Octaves only
With INTERVAL set to Chromatic, any 3-note chord can be created, with a spread of up to four octaves. With a programmable quantizer such as that built into René, it is possible to sequence chords, arpeggios and melodies in any key or scale.
The most flexibility in chord selection is afforded by a keyboard such as the KMI QuNexus. Send its gate output to the D-Gate, and keyboard CV to Degree. We can play whatever chord we like manually by selecting three notes in succession… It also works nicely for chord changes layered with a simple sequence patched to TONIC.
