Remembering Dave Smith: A Prophet-5 Story
video upload by INHALTVIDEO
"Today is the anniversary of Dave Smith’s passing, and every year on this day, I find myself reflecting not just on the incredible instruments he created, but on the friendship we built and the tremendous support he gave me in my career.
One of the projects I’m most proud to have been a part of is the reissue of the Prophet-5. I had the honor of contributing to its development, from long conversations and persistent hassling about voice allocation to the privilege of crafting patches for the final instrument. One of those patches—my take on the true essence of the Prophet-5—became the very first one you hear when you turn it on: patch 111.
To have my work live inside such an iconic synthesizer, and to have shared time and ideas with the man who brought it to life—not once, but multiple times—is something I’ll always carry with deep gratitude. Thank you, Dave, for your friendship, your brilliance, and your contributions to music that ripple out endlessly."
The EV: A New Digital/Acoustic Hybrid Stringed-Instrument Synthesizer
video upload by Brian Lindgren
"The EV is a new digital/acoustic hybrid stringed-instrument synthesizer. The instrument’s FFT convolution algorithms combined with the unique and expressive synthesizer create a gritty and textured realism. Using a novel pitch-tracking technology the instrument achieves both high accuracy and low latency; in this way it overcomes the hurdles that have historically plagued pitch-tracking or ‘MIDI’ stringed-instruments. Most importantly, the EV is reliable, expressive, and enjoyable-to-play. The most unique feature of the EV is its sound. While the pitch-tracking technology allows for a responsive and accurate playing experience (which cannot be overvalued), the FFT convolution unlocks new dimensions of sonic possibility and a uniquely responsive electronic instrument. The parametric customizability of the synthesizers, transfer functions, and FFT engines (not to mention the timbral-responsive nature of the FFT convolution algorithms) allows for a responsive and far-reaching sonic palette. Most synthesizers utilize an interface for pitch input that forces the player to adhere to a ‘Western’ twelve-tone scale system, for example, a keyboard. As the EV is a fretless stringed-instrument, it allows for the creation of synthesized music of any particular tuning system. In this way it suggests the creation of music beyond the Western canon, suggesting myriad musical possibilities."

"Sound demo of the Amiteque AR-110 in a sort of song context... well it's one pattern going round and round that I fiddle with a little bit. The important thing is whether the drums sound any good to you."

Bentley Rhythm Ace 60's Vintage Drum Machine
video upload by David Bessell
"Tips on how to work with vintage drum machines in a modern context. You can not easily just sample the sounds in early drum machines because they typically have just one mono out and little control over the individual sounds. Additionally sampling such analogue sources removes the liveliness and timing quirks that people like about these machines. Of course they also have no way of easily synching to a DAW although most DAW's can derive a custom tempo map from the audio they produce providing its close to the intended tempo."

Testing the mighty Uranograph from @clank_modular

Uranograph test #2
video upload by Giorgio Sancristoforo
"If you asked me what the 21st century synthesizer should be like, I would say the Uranograph without a doubt. The integration of the looper inside the synthesizer, its modulation capabilities, its effects, its ergonomics conceived for performance, its immediate controls and its design, make it a unique, futuristic and incredibly fun instrument.
For many years we have seen the 70s repeat themselves, the Uranograph created by the guys from Clank instead takes you into the future. How refreshing!
Thanks to @clank_modular for sending me a ticket to outer space!"
