Linn LinnDrum LM2 synced with the 1010music Blackbox

video upload by Pepe Mogt

"The LinnDrum was the second machine from Linn Electronics. It's basically an upgraded version of the original with added crash and ride cymbals to the kit. The LinnDrum uses samples of acoustic drum sounds. At the time, they sounded great and much more realistic and they were a fresh alternative to the analog drum sounds of the '80's drum machines. The LinnDrum also had a handy upgrade option, a well designed layout and interface, and live drum trigger inputs.

The LinnDrum had beefed up the sampled sounds from 28 to a 35kHz sample rate. It features 15 sounds including bass, snare, rimshot, hihat, crash, ride, three toms, cabasa, tambourine, high and low congas, cowbell, and clap. Up to 12 sounds are available simultaneously. Individual controls are available to tune, pan, and mix each drum sound via dedicated knobs and sliders. An Accent is available for the kick, snare and hats. The handy upgrade options involve inserting new chips containing new sets of sampled drum sounds created by many session drummers of the time.

The sequencer had some innovative features (for the time) such as swing, quantizing and memory storage! Two-bar patterns can be recorded in real or step time, with or without quantizing. There are 56 user patterns for storing your drum patterns. There are also 42 preset drum patterns. Patterns can be arranged into Songs for which there are 49 memory locations. Old songs and patterns can be off-loaded to cassette tape for storage. Designed for the studio, there are 15 individual outputs for each sound around the back as well as external sync and trigger but no MIDI (unless modified by a 3rd party)."

Ex-Inferno Metal Distortion Demo Through Volca Kick

Dj Puzzle

"I got this little distortion pedal from Amazon for $20 new (had a discount coupon code from Jump Send) and ran my Korg Volca Kick through it. All I can say is it sounds good and man it was cheap! I like that it's small in size too. The full price is $41.88 and you can get it here. Also used a 1010Music Blackbox for the drum beat and that you can get here.

cheers!

The BlackBox is Buggy, But He Made a Track Anyway! (Feat. Minifreak)

video upload by Ricky Tinez

"Get ready for a wild ride.. In this Dawless jam, aka a Compact Creation, the BlackBox by 1010music became a wild beast with some potential bugs? Who knows, most likely user error, haha! Don't worry, we're rolling with it and pushing forward to keep the track going! Outside of the drums, all the magic comes from the Minifreak sounds that I loop into the Blackbox. It's a bit of chaos, a dash of unexpected, but a whole lot of fun.

Recidivist

video upload by nbor

"At my portable, battery powered #dawless setup, working out a groove. Roland SH01A for the bass, Korg Volca FM for a lead, Meeblip Geode for another lead, Elektron Model Cycles for the drums and percussion. @1010music Blackbox is the brains of the operation, recording and playing sequences and distributing MIDI. Random crummy delay pedal on the volca FM is chosen more for its size than its sound!"

Blackbox now has Multi-Sample Recording

Olivier Ozoux

"You won't believe what happened once I pressed the record button!!! 😜 With firmware v1.6, 1010Music added multi-sampling support to the Blackbox, but instead of just loading multi-sampled instruments, they've also implemented multi-sample recording, for both MIDI and CV/Gate instruments.

Unstable Articulations

video upload by nbor

"Intending to just try some things out, I ended up indulging in an extended jam, then doing some overdubs. Although it's a very different sound and structure, I'm pulling influence from early 70's Miles Davis, which so often pulls off that psychedelic miasma vibe so well. YouTube is really not the best place for this type of music, I suppose, but it will have to do.
I didn't capture the guitar work on video, but got everything else. The guitar is so heavily processed and only occasionally appears, so it doesn't really add much to show it. Once again the Bucha Easel Command is featured. Some pings from the modular, and drums on the 1010 Blackbox, the Thunder is used to play Newfangled Generate synth. Everything was refined in Bitwig, quickly mastered with Newfangled Elevate.

The drums are one of the several drum kits you can download for Blackbox:

A Window In Felton

video by nbor

"There's a lovely spot in a funny little cabin in Felton CA that lends itself to ambient music. Very slow, possibly even boring, but it certainly fit the vibe I had, not far from ancient redwoods.

I have been trying out super portable setups, and this is about as portable as it gets: battery power for 1010 Blackbox and Sensel Morph, filmed with phone. Sounds are from a variety of sources - a couple stock sounds from 1010, some recordings I did with my son, some sounds from the NASA archive, etc.

Podcast 272: Aaron Higgins of 1010 Music

Published on Apr 14, 2019 20Objects

"It's pretty hard to avoid gear lust when you see 1010 Music's work in action. Originally launched as the Bitbox, the touchscreen, high-function module has spawned a number of implementations, including the Synthbox, Fxbox, Toolbox and - most recently - the standalone Blockbox. I've been in awe of this system since it was first released, and I'm glad to have the chance to talk with the creator - Aaron Higgins.

Based out of LA, Aaron and his spouse have 1010 humming. By focusing on a specific setup (a touch-based interface on a fully-digital module base), they have been creating some eye-popping modules for sample playback, digital synthesis, realtime sequencing and even laser pattern generation. You have to see some of these things to believe them, but in general you can say that 1010 is pushing the envelope of what we think a module can do.

In our talk, we discuss the development of the platform, the differences in the devices, and Aaron's inspiration and design aesthetic. We also peek at his background as a developer, and look into the future of standalone hardware creation.

I got a chance to see the 1010 Blackbox in action at Synthplex, and am so glad that he took the opportunity to have a chat. If you want to see more about their hardware offerings, check out their website: https://1010music.com/

Enjoy!"
