Ace Waters - Synths and Bells
Kyle Von Lanken - Guitars
Jeffrey James - Vocals and such

This is the fourth video in a five part series titled layers. Everything in this series was created using layers, thus the title. Kyle started this one off with the guitar part, which was then sent to Jeff who added some wonderful, layered, looped vocals. Then Ace took it and added some synth sounds, bass, and some bells. The first tracks, or the theme of the song, was inspired by a short story concept that Ace thought up. Then, once each song was complete, Ace would listen to the song and write that part of the story, allowing the story to inspire the song, which then inspires the story. Everything, coming together in Layers. Each song title is based on a really cool word.

Pt. IV: Gokotta

The dreams swirled in brilliant patterns, dancing through my mind. But somewhere, deep within my thoughts, came a clear voice, telling me to wake. When my eyes finally opened, I could see the sun, pouring in through the opening to the cave. There was a purpose for my waking. It was as if I knew I needed to wake for this. It was sort of deliberate and subliminal wake up call.

I could hear the birds, calling me outward. I rose slowly and made my way into the morning light. It was blinding at first. I looked out, eyes squinting, at the horizon. I could barely tell where the ocean ended and the sky began. The sun hung low in the sky, slowly climbing up in the morning sky.

The night before this place was a nightmare of sharp jagged rocks and stinging sea water. I would have never thought it to be the same place that I stood now. The rocks were decorated with beautiful colors and patterns. The pools full of life. The bird cheered from the trees, high above me on the cliffs.

Everything had changed. Yet, nothing had changed. I stood not a mile from this spot the day previous, staring out at this same ocean. Yet I cared not for the sounds of the birds and the waves or the artwork of the cliffs.

I had to be broken to be fixed.
I had to be wounded to be healed.
It was not the coast that had changed, it was me.

And now, I was ready."

"I wanted to show y'all how I make my videos, so I decided I would live stream it!"

Catch some of Ace Waters finished videos here. It's always interesting to see how something polished begins.

Quick note from Ace: "This is indeed how my tracks begin, although it might be a bit more rough than normal, because I have been having some technical difficulties."

Looking forward to the finished track.

"I want to start doing friday behind the scenes videos. I think they might become a patreon exclusive thing in the future...but I am not sure. Let me know what you think of the video, and if you want to see more in the future. This is my first time doing this. I might use weird words at times as I was pretty nervous and I did it in one take. Hopefully as I get more comfortable with these they wont be quite so awkward.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World // Ramona [Geektronica Synth Cover]

Published on Jun 8, 2016 Ace Waters

"Was working on a VGM when I found the Scott Pilgrim vinyl at my local record shop. I remembered a long while ago wanting to do a cover of the song "Ramona" from the film, and decided this would be the perfect time to do it. Hope you enjoy! I know I don't sing very often, so hopefully its not too painful.

One note. I had no idea the lyrics are actually 'On my mind' and not just 'my my my'. Oh well. I think they still work pretty well. The song is so basic, I didnt think to look up lyrics. I just went by what I always thought it was.

Thank you to the wonderful people who support that channel through patreon. If you enjoyed this video, think about supporting the music and join the party!

VGM #148: Manoria Cathedral (Chrono Trigger) Ambient Industrial Doom Cover

Published on Sep 11, 2018 Ace Waters

"It's like if the Cathedral was in Bloodborne, instead of Chrono Trigger. I got real dark on this one, and I am so happy with how crunchy and heavy it got. My friend Khalil Moutrie helped by lending his smooth, monk chant vocals to the mix. We have been talking about collaborating for a while, so I am happy to have gotten a chance to work with him!"

Sequential Prophet-6, Tempest, Kurzweil PC3X, Moog Voyager XL, Nintendo NES with CHIP MAESTRO, Korg Arp Odyssey & more. These are great and pass the posting guidelines for the site as you can distinctly see and hear what each individual synth is doing.

"se·rein - a fine rain falling from a sky in which no clouds are visible.

This is the first video in a six part series titled layers. Everything in this series was created using layers, thus the title. Ace and Kyle would trade the song back and forth, layering new tracks on top of each other, until the full song came to be.

Layers Pt. 1: Serein
One evening, as the sun was setting over the horizon of the open sea, I found myself standing on the edge of the shore. My feet slowly sank into the sand, My eyes, transfixed on the sunset. I could not remember how I arrived at this spot. I knew not of what travels led me to this moment. I knew not of what plans I had for what would come next. All I had was this moment, even that felt hollow without context or cause. The world painted its extravagant artwork around me, and I could not feel one emotion stir within me.

It wasn't until my clothes soaked through that I noticed the gentle rain falling from the cloudless sky. In a different situation, this light mist would seem heavenly, set against this all-together lovely backdrop of a sunset. In a different situation, I would be equally puzzled and amazed by the clear, cloudless sky letting free such a delicate rain. In a different situation, this moment would define who I was to become. It would shape and mold me into a better person. I would leave this place with a passion to seek forgiveness and give in abundance. In a different situation, this moment would be my salvation.

But now, I was merely empty, devoid of all emotions the scene demanded and unable to grasp the mystery of the slow falling deluge that now forced my soaked clothes to stick to my skin. I was but a shell of a man: vacant, sodden, and growing increasingly cold as the sun fell behind the edge of the sea."

Ace: Prophet 08, Tempest, Lil Phatty
Kyle: Guitars
Jeffrey: Vocals and Bells

This is the fifth and final video in a five part series titled layers. Everything in this series was created using layers, thus the title. This song started with the Prophet 08 patch, which was Ace's first deep venture into the prophets sequencing abilities. Then He added the drums and bass. Then Kyle got the track, while he was still in IL, and added the guitar parts. Ace then mixed it a bit, sent it to Jeff, who added 8 different parts, using glockenspiel in very unique ways as well as adding his amazing and unique vocals. It has more layers than any track in the past, and it fits the stories conclusion. I hope you enjoy!

V: Kairos

My feet began to move with purpose and direction. I knew where my travels were leading me. My plans stood before me, showing me all that the world had to offer. With my heart leading the way, my mind was able to once again take in this perfect moment, now fulfilled by purpose, context, and cause. The world was painting its extravagant artwork all around me. But, this time I was not an observer, trying with futility to drink it in. I was a part of it. Every stroke of light bounced off me, casting shadows against the rocks as I moved upward. My feet left soft wet footprints as I climbed. I was not an idle consumer of the worlds majesty, I was intrinsically bound to it, participating in it, and engaged by it.

As I reached the top, the wind blew wildly around me, kicking up leaves and dust in chaotic, swirling patterns. I danced through the chaos, adding my notes to the cacophony. The dust whipped against my clothes, the sun beat against my skin. Down below waves crashed and slowly weathered away at the rocks. It was a perfect, deliberate moment, made of chaos and complexity. There was rhythm, hidden in the noise, all I had to do was find it.
All I needed was this crucial experience of breaking and mending. The beach found me lost. The cliffs broke me down. The cavern healed my wounds. The morning gave me purpose. I had found the patterns in the static and now nothing could stop me."

VGM #76: Underground (Yoshi's Island) Ft. Carl Waters

Published on May 25, 2016 Ace Waters

"This week I went on a trip to visit my family in Illinois. I brought my iPad, my Game Boy, My OP-1, and my camera along for the ride and filmed this weeks video while chilling at my parents house. Most of the clips were performed and recorded in my childhood bedroom! Ft. my dad, Carl Waters on acoustic guitar solos. We recorded a bunch of takes and I loved so much of so many of them, that it kind of jumps around a bit. Hope you enjoy it!

This one has a distinctly unique sound from my other videos, due to my limited collection of instruments and use of the iPad and apogee as a daw/mobile recording unit.

I picked a song I thought my dad could jam to, that wasn't too complicated for arrangement, that I was inspired to do."

MBMBAM Main Theme // (It's a) Departure - The Long Winters

Published on Mar 1, 2017 Ace Waters

"McElroy Madness begins!

For the next four weeks I am going to be covering themes and songs from the most wonderful sweet boys on the internet. Starting off with the My Brother, My Brother and Me theme. Have you seen their Seeso show? Because its dope. Really really good stuff. Check it out. And if you don't know who the McElroy brothers are, get to it. I would suggest starting with Monster Factory, because its the funniest thing I have ever seen. The Adventure Zone is also super dope. And I mean, you can't go wrong with MBMBAM. More to come!

Also, shoutouts to The Long Winters. They wrote the original song, (It's a) Departure and are kings of the college rock jams. Check em out, especially if you are into good music.
