"EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC EXPERIENCE" - PIOTR GARBACZONEK (FULL LIVE PERFORMANCE AT BERKLEE)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thank you all so much for watching my performance!
Date: December 14th, 2021
Location: B54 at Berklee College Of Music, EPD Labs
(Electronic Production and Design)

This show was my showcase as part of my EP-491's final project for my major. Aside from finishing a 5-track EP in a semester, I also was preparing this set for a very long time along with all the music. I decided to pull in a few songs from my previous EP: Experimental EP, Vol. 01, to spice up the performance a bit. The songs included were: Conformity, as the first song after the modular-only section; Time, which was the song at the end of the set with the QR code to my social media links. Everything else was songs from the past 4 months.

All the visuals were edited beat by beat, a song by song in Adobe Premiere Pro, and then rendered and then put into an Ableton Session to be played in a specific earlier-defined order.

I divided the show into 2 sections: Ambient Experimental, and Glitch Experimental.

The first part included rhythm-free elements only and primarily played on various modular synths, up until the 13th minute, where modular synths were supporting all the songs played in order.

The second part included various drum elements, as well as glitch music and frequency spectrum bending polyrhythms.

In terms of gear used, I used my Zoom L-12 Multitrack Mixer, to record all of the individual inputs directly into Ableton. Ableton had different effects in the effects chain of each track depending on what was necessary for each one.

For all the weird clock-driven, laser-sounding fast atonal sounds, I used the CMS MR-15 Modular System based off of the ARP 2500. For some chords and mild sawtooth progressions, I used the Blue Marvin 2600, which is based on the ARP 2600 with built-in Spring Reverb. The Blue Marvin was sequenced by one of my Qu-Bit Bloom Sequencers running in the minor key.
The master clock for everything was the ALM Pamela's New Workout, and it was clocking the CMS, Blue Marvin, 2x Qu-Bit Bloom, Qu-Bit Chance, Moog Subharmonicon (which was doing all the background pads), and Mutable Instruments Rings.
There were various other sequenced sounds, including Mutable Instruments Plaits as a 32-step arpeggio in minor, as well as Mutable Instruments Rings, going through Clouds as a textured effect.
Cwejman VCO-2RM was running through Qu-Bit Tone's LPF, and directly out as a very low analog sub.
The E340 Cloud Generator was my analog Wavetable synth, which I played directly on the Arturia Keystep MIDI-Controller, by sending it pitch information only, and running it through MI Ripples, and out.
The Instruo Arbhar was running in stereo mode, and that one was doing all of the tapping and scratching noises in left and right channels. It has a built-in condenser mic, so I was tapping it on the spot to fill up some space in transitions for some ASMR effects haha.
That's pretty much it in terms of gear used.
If you have any questions about anything, please don't hesitate to ask in the comments. I will happily answer.

Again a huge thank you to Wiggz for doing some cool action shots while I was playing.
This is his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCItL...

And thank you to Dr.B for being an amazing professor, and leading me through the last stretch of my EPD Journey, as well as opening new doors for me for the future.

Sequential Artist Spotlight Interview with TAKAHIRO IZUMIKAWA

You can find the interview on Sequential's website here.

"Takahiro Izumikawa is a highly sought-after pianist, keyboardist, arranger, and producer born and raised in Japan. His style has its roots in jazz but incorporates hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and traditional Japanese melodies. He released his first piano solo album in 2014, which was sponsored by Kawai Musical Instruments. He moved to New York City later that year to further his music career. Since then, he has worked with well-known hip hop artists such as Smif&Wessun, Kool Keith, Black Moon, and Smoke DZA. He has also worked with Grammy Award winning musicians Maurice Brown (trumpet player for Anderson .Paak), Jermaine Holmes (vocalist for D’Angelo), Daru Jones (drummer), Mononeon (bassist), Marcus Machado (guitarist), and Timothy Bloom (vocalist).

In 2016, he performed with Takuya Kuroda, a notable trumpet player who debuted through Blue Note Records at the Blue Note Jazz Festival, which was headlined by Earth Wind and Fire, George Benson, and Marcus Miller. In 2017, he arranged all the tracks on “Hard Times,” an album by alto saxophonist and jazz giant Vincent Herring.

Takahiro’s latest album Life is Your Thoughts was released from major label Ropeadope in the United States on April 10th, 2020.

We chatted with Takahiro on how he uses the Prophet-6 in his music"

Patch from Scratch: "Eurorack Ambient"

Published on Nov 21, 2018 MAKEN0ISE

"Relax.

The patch for this video was inspired by classic ambient and furniture music, as well as by currently popular ambient modular composers here on YouTube.

Erik Satie first introduced the notion of “furniture music”, music specifically made not to be the center of attention.

He made some other musical innovations that are pertinent to ambient music, including;

1. The removal of bar lines from sheet music. (The experience of playing pieces in this style, such as the 6 Gnossienes, is that of finding the meter that arises between the note durations rather than having it dictated by the outward structure of the piece.)

2. The notion of exact temporal durations in minutes and seconds being prioritized as the main structural element of pieces.

In a letter, John Cage once wrote: “the importance due [Satie] [is], I believe, to have consistently structured his music on lengths of time rather than harmonic relations. I’m sure he was aware of doing this but I doubt whether he knew its real importance, which is real: liberation from the Beethoven yoke, far more real than that granted by S[choenberg] with the 12-tone row.”

The best known pioneer of “ambient music” *as such* is Brian Eno.

For Eno, Ambient music should function equally well in the background and the foreground. “It must be as ignorable as it is interesting.”

Demo :: Alesis Midiverb II Presets using SH101 + Aphex Twin Riff - Reverb, Chorus, Delay, Flanger

Published on Jun 10, 2018 SOLON Music

"Demo of Alesis Midiverb II presets using Roland SH101 synth playing Aphex Twin riff from 'Tha' (Selected Ambient Works 85-92). 10 presets demo'ed:

27 Large Bright Reverb
61 Light Chorus 2
49 Bloom 2.7 secs
41 Reverse
51 Flange Pan 1
99 Regenerated Delay 4 Sec
22 Large Warm Reverb
48 Reverse Regen
2 Small Bright Reverb
29 Xlarge Warm Reverb

Chose these presets because they worked well with the riff used and demonstrate a wide variety of the sounds that the unit can produce.

I also consciously ordered the presets so that there are significant differences with each change - to avoid the listening experience becoming too subtle.

The SH101was recorded through Tube Tech MP2A preamp and Antelope Audio Eclipse converter into Ableton.

Audio from Midiverb II was recorded through Antelope Audio Eclipse converter into Ableton.

Makenoise 0-Coast: Timbre Space 01

Published on Feb 17, 2018 C Nich0lls

"Single take recording meant simply as sound exploration. I enjoy ambient music that can be played quietly to add an audio sheen to a space, but also that can be played loud, when it becomes an almost physical immersion. Let me know what kinds of ambient music you enjoy and whether you also enjoy recordings that can be played loud.

The 0-Coast was self-patched with the internal clock pulsing the Contour. The Slope generator was set to self-cycle.

The rhythmic pulsing was developed by using the random out to both the Contour Decay and Slope Time inputs, simultaneously.

The amount of random is adjusted though the recording, as is the Balance mix between the Triangle wave and the Overtone/Multiply circuit.

The 0-Coast was recorded though an Infanem Improbability Drive pedal and subsequently through the Strymon Timeline, running a custom dTape patch.

Recorded in Ableton Live with slight EQ and compression on final out. A second pass of reverb from Strymon BigSky, running a custom Bloom patch, was added after the recording."

Synth Tracks on the Amiga by Peahix

Published on Feb 22, 2017 peahix

Two playlists, one featuring the Amiga Aegis Sonix synth above, and one featuring the Amiga Deluxe Music Construction Set below. Don't miss the first track and it's description below. It's pretty funny - some musique concrete for you. Many of you might recognize the name Peahix from one, his Optigan.com endeavors, and two some of his many videos and covers posted here on MATRIXSYNTH.

1. 1987 Amiga Deluxe Music Construction Set - Music for Bloom County Contest

"Here's something I dug up today that I haven't thought of in years and figured was loooong gone. In 1987, Bloom County had a contest where you could submit your own original song for Billy & The Boingers, the band in the comic strip. Well, this is what I came up with on my Amiga. A couple of the sounds had gone missing, so I had to replace them with other sounds, but, well, I don't think that matters very much. Needless to say, I didn't win the contest."

2. Amiga Deluxe Music Construction Set - Fugue in D Minor

"This is an original fugue in D minor more or less in the style of JS Bach that I wrote on my Amiga when I was a teenager, around 1987. I wrote this before I'd had any formal music theory training, so I'm sure the counterpoint and voice leading is all wrong wrong wrong, but oh well, it sounded authentic enough to me back then."

FXpansion Introduces Geist2 Beat Production System

Published on May 19, 2016 FXpansion

"FXpansion forges ahead with Geist2 beat production system

LONDON, UK - MAY 19: audio software developer FXpansion is proud to announce the availability of Geist2, an all-new incarnation of its award-winning Geist. Geist2 is a powerful sound-sculpting and beat production system with streamlined sample manipulation, arrangement, and modulation capabilities for intuitive and accelerated workflow. Available for Mac OS X (10.9 or higher) and Windows (7 SP1 or higher), as 64-bit only AAX, 32- and 64-bit AU and VST, and Standalone versions.

Geist2 is an advanced step-sequencer and sample-based drum machine realised in software and sympathetically styled so that creativity comes to the fore. First and foremost, it allows an elegant and ergonomic way to effortlessly build beats (although is equally well suited to work with all kinds of music material). Grooves and rhythms can be performed and programmed quicker than ever, thanks to its redesigned, resizable (Retina/4K-compatible) interface that’s as easy on the eye as it is to use.

There’s so much more to Geist2 than first meets the eye. Equally at home as a triggered sample player, loop machine, performance beatbox, production system, or all of these things at once, anyone can approach beat making in their own way with Geist2.

For slicing longer loops, the refined Slicer combined with up to 64 pads allows for fast, non-destructive chopping of beats with automatic pattern extraction — easily create custom loops, thanks to drag-and-drop MIDI and audio export functionality.

When capturing samples with Geist2’s Sampler, whether working with multiple loops or threshold-based single hits, the integrated browser and an ability to record directly to the pads provides an easy-going environment for creating custom kits to hit that perfect beat!

But what about taking things to an even higher level of interest, musical-sounding or otherwise? Geist2’s got it covered, thanks to the TransMod system. Automate almost any parameter with interacting modulators like LFOs, step-sequencers, envelopes, maths functions, and macro controls to morph and evolve sounds in new and creative ways.
Each of Geist2’s eight engines feature a 64-track Sequencer with 24 pattern memories — all with individual track lengths to create evolving polyrhythmic patterns. Event probability, micro-timing shifts for ‘off-the-grid’ organic grooves, and parameter step- automation for adding new dimensions to beats are also available.

When working in Song mode, building complex, evolving arrangements is easy and fun; record scene changes live in real time or just start playing — capturing it all afterwards and never missing an idea with retro recording functionality.

Finally, Geist2’s powerful sampling and effects engine can twist and transform sounds into something completely different. Layer samples with individual effects and use crossfaded loop point modulation alongside Zynaptiq’s ZTX — a cross-platform technology for high-quality time-stretching, pitch-shifting, and pitch-correction — to create new sounds and textures. New effects also include FXpansion’s own Bloom (creative delay and diffusion effect) and Maul (distortion and tone shaper) algorithms alongside low fidelity DAC (Digital to Audio Convertor) modelling, high-quality reverb, frequency shifting, granular freezing, classic DCAM (Discrete Component Analogue Modelling) compression, filters, drive, and much more.

With its inbuilt intelligent browser for navigating a superlative sound library from Splice Sounds — a passionate team of engineers, designers, writers, musicians, and music-lovers devoted to producing some of the best loops, samples, and sounds around — Geist2 is ready and able to take beats and grooves to the next level" https://www.fxpansion.com/products/geist2/

"This is a very special instrument played by Eric Bloom and Allen Lanier of Blue Oyster Cult both on tour and on several Blue Oyster Cult albums. You can hear it on the lead of "Flaming Telepaths" on 1974's "Secret Treaties" as well as on many other tracks during the band's recording career. It toured with BOC for most of the '70s and was retired to storage. Recently it was completely gone over and refurbished at dBm Pro Audio/Music Services in NYC and is now in perfect working condition. (receipt of $1200.00+ available with purchase). The wood is 'as-was' with used patina. It's both a collectible and working keyboard. Letter of authenticity from Eric Bloom."
