Pro Synth Network LIVE! - Episode 125 with special guest, Ben 'Benge' Edwards!

video upload by Pro Synth Network

An interview with Benge aka zack dagoba. Don't miss his Vintage Synth TV episodes.

"Music Technology Discussion with Ben Simpson, Kent Spong, Rob Puricelli and special guest, Ben 'Benge' Edwards!

Ben Edwards, known professionally as Benge, is an English musician and record producer based in Cornwall, England. The main focus of his work is within the experimental electronic music field. He launched the record label Expanding Records as an outlet for his debut album 'Electro-Orgoustic Music' in 1995. His tenth solo album, released in 2008, was called 'Twenty Systems' and featured 20 individual tracks, each based around a specific synthesizer

Over the years Benge has amassed a large collection of electronic synthesisers, drum machines and studio equipment which is housed in his 'Memetune Studio Complex'. From here he writes and records his own music as well as working on his many collaborations

Since 2012, Benge has released a regular series of online solo albums via his bandcamp and iTunes pages. These albums regularly feature his "one-synthesiser-per-album" concept, whereby he limits himself to creating a full album using a single electronic music system

He's worked as a co-writer and producer with many luminaries of the Electronic Music scene, such as John Foxx, Wrangler (Stephen Mallinder), Blancmange (Neil Arthur), Creepshow (John Grant) and many others, as well as pursuing his own musical projects such as Oblong and Fader

2022 saw the launch of The Memetune Show on his YouTube channel. This show, hugely reminiscent of late 70s/early 80s BBC/PBS technology shows, is a part tongue in cheek, part serious exploration of vintage synthesizer and video production technology"

PPG 1003 Sonic Carrier

The PPG 1003 Sonic Carrier. See this post on whether it was the world's first programmable synth with patch memories. There's also a video in the post. Also check out the PPG Webpages for some pics of the 1003.

via Kent Spong on Facebook

"Almost finished this stunning example of PPG goodness. A most unusual instrument combining a perfect harmony of analogue and digital not often seen in any synths really, bearing in mind that this pre dates the OB2 voice by a few years. :)"

"I'm not entirely sure of the numbers, but Mr. Palm built about 14 of these and about 5 have survived. But none to the level this girl is running now ;)"

PPG Wave 2.2 / 2.3 Rack Project

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"I have a significant amount of time [both mine and others] and money invested in making this work.
I am at my limits of abilities to work on it. I can get a display to run but no sound because of the Proz-mismatch.

The PPG has the latest Virtual Music 8.3 ROMs. I am including a second set of ROMs as well.

I would refer to this below from Alexander from Virtual Music [link removed by eBay]
I am looking for $5000 as is.

When this was shipped, the cards were not removed and wrapped so the damages are listed below.
• 2-3 broken mylar caps [the leads are hairline thin and very fragile]
• 1 broken 27.460mhz Crystal
• LCD cable pins are bent / broken and some will need replacement.

SYNTHI Meets The Shining

via RL Music on Facebook

"Last post here for the week....before my birthday weekend and a few days off celebrating the big Five-O with friends & family, starting with a big party tomorrow!

So, here’s my parting Friday picture that I took especially for you all this morning, at my Synth Storage Emporium. I’ve titled this picture: ‘THE SYNTHING’

Did you know, the RL Music Synth Storage Emporium is said to have been built on the site of an ancient Native American burial ground...near Reading in Berkshire. I’m just kidding of course, but those corridors are awesome and so Kubrick-esq.

Anyway, the ensemble of vintage EMS synths here are in various states of restoration, with the Mk1 VCS3 ‘Putney’ yet to be restored. The DK1 ‘Cricklewood’ & DK2 keyboards are also waiting to go to KSR for the full treatment by the Master Restorer - Kent Spong."

MOOG MEMORYMOOG SERIAL 1009

images at this auction
"This particular memorymoog is the one featured in Peter Forrest's "A-Z of Synthesiser Technology" books.. it's the one on the cover and in the colour center section. I have own it for 5 years and it has been serviced/tuned 3 times during my time, once at Synthrestore and twice through Kent Spong of KSR/RLMusic. It tunes all 6 voices pretty much all the time and after a few hours warming up it's rock solid, it would easily handle a recording session but I wouldn't take it out on the road.

6 voice polyphonic... 6 complete synth chains so you get 6 filters & 12 envelopes etc. not 6 voices going through 1 filter and 2 envelopes.

3 Oscillators per voice... hold all 6 notes down and that's 18 Oscillators playing!

Each Oscillator can have all waveforms operating at once... so that's Pulse, Sawtooth and Triangle all on, creating a huge depth to the sound.

Oscillators 1 and 2 can be synced and modulated for that great 'twang' sound as used by Jean-Michel Jarre.

All Oscillators range from 16' through 2' pitch and can be tuned using dual concentric vernier tuning pots for precise tuning... and Oscillator 3 can be modulated into low frequency allowing you to gain extra modulation possibilities (and emulate minimoog patches).

2 separate modulation busses allowing LFO modulation of Oscillator pitch, pulse wave width (each oscillator can be modulated independently) and filter. Voice modulation in conjunction with OSC 3 can modulate OSC 1 and 2's pitch and pulse wave width, and also filter.

Famous discreet component Moog ladder filter matches the same controls as the minimoog model D including switched keyboard tracking, off, 1/3, 2/3 and full.

Full Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release envelopes for both amplitude and filter (not just ADS like on the mini) with multiple retrigering functions allowing you to legato the filter envelope or restart it on every new key trigger or make the envelope generator finish its Attack/Release cycle if you just touch a key etc.

Sounds can be stored in 100 preset positions and dialed in via an alpha-numeric keypad and display... a display which shows you the values of the parameter you are controlling live as you are turning the knob, something that was cutting edge 25 years ago and still not implemented as standard on all modern synths."

ORGON SYSTEMS Enigiser Modular Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Custom build by Geoff Waterstone

It’s not very often these will come up for sale, more so because only 6 were in existence.

If you’re looking at this advert you may know of Orgon Systems cult following most notably for its Enigiser filter commented and admired by many a forum.

In the time I have had it its been well looked after and mid 2019 I had both the modulars serviced by Kent Spong and this without schematics, as they do not exist!

This could be a once in a lifetime purchase and if you’re a modular lover or collector could be the only time you will see one of these. I have had several requests in the past for pictures of the boards and especially the filter module for clone duplication which I have respectfully declined. There’s a charm and history surrounding the build of this machine which I have chosen to respect given these were not supplied with any manuals or schematics by its creator.

Below are the modules on the unit, which also run on 220v.

EDP Wasp 25-Key Analog Synthesizer w/ T-Shirt & Manual/l=Leaflet

"A rare and quirky machine for sure. Esoteric, sought-after (now!) and very much its own thing. This unit is in almost MINT condition. The distinctive design has helped make this a classic...dual oscillation and capacitive membrane keyboard! The sounds are a bit mad once you get your head around the operation. Works off 'C' batteries or a dc supply (9volt 1amp recommended)(I did have a psu but had to use it for another machine). Just come back from service by Kent Spong (keyboard tech genius). If you want a collectable - and/or some really interesting sounds to play - this is it. Comes with user manual/leaflet and a t-shirt!"

Yamaha CS-80 Polyphonic Synthesizer (Japan/1977) + MIDI

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Pics of the inside below.

"This instrument of wonder has had MIDI fitted, and is complete with original swell and sustain pedals, and locking chrome stand. Condition is excellent, considering its age. It was converted to 220V, when serviced by Kent Spong (top UK go-to tech/London). Tuning is stable, after the analogue components are allowed to warm up. Serial number is 0019 (only 800 ever made..). Weight of this instrument is around 100Kg. Serious weight, serious instrument. Used by Vangelis and countless others......do the research.

If you are reading this, then you must be "au fait" with the CS-80 model. This one was sourced from a Japanese collector, imported to central England, professionally serviced, then sporadically used in a pro studio. It has NOT been thrashed/abused..."
