'Radiophonic Randomness' - Using the RANDOM VOLTAGE EVENT GENERATOR to make retro scf-fi sounds

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Just for fun... Some lo-fi sounds/noises created with the help of the Dual RVG Eurorack module, providing random voltages and clock/gate signals, and demonstrating it's ability to multi-function, here providing 4 control signals. It's just an experiment really, since the author of this video is such a fan of the early adopters of analogue synths and the sounds they created, from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's low-budget TV and radio soundtracks, to the first, less melodic synthesizer experimentations of Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and others.

Many of these involved the instruments and tools created by a small English company called EMS (Synthi, VCS3), and the Dual RVG by AJH Synth is directly based on one of their rarest products - the Random Voltage Generator. These would be incredibly hard to find now, and expensive, so having the same functionality and vintage circuit design in just 14hp of Eurorack space is a great alternative. The Dual RVG is a limited edition, only 500 units were to be made, but there are still some left as of writing this. It is an authentic vintage design, and it's behaviour faithfully recreates this character - organic in it's uncertainty and anomalies, unlike modern digital modulation sources. A very unique, but useful tool for generative music, experimental sound design, but also melodic composition and performance, especially when used with a quantiser and/or sequencer (see here: [posted here])

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself: [posted here]

THE KORG VC-10 VOCODER FROM 1978

video upload by Alex Ball

"A look at the Korg VC-10 from 1978, their first ever vocoder. It was part of the MS range and was used by Buggles, Tomita, Keith Emerson, Apollo 440, Klaus Schulze and many others.

0:00 Intro
1:43 Basic Vocoding
3:51 Shenanigans 1: Vocello
5:07 Shenanigans 2: Drum Chord
6:56 Shenanigans 3: Ext Pitch
8:04 Shenanigans 4: MS-01 Footsie
8:52 Outro

Nerdy details as promised:
The VC-10 is a 20 band vocoder with an onboard microphone (modulator) and internal tone generators (carriers)

Controls:
Pitch wheel, tuning and an octave switch
Keyboard to noise balance
External signal (carrier) in with level
Internal and external Mic level (modulator)
Balance of vocoder signal and audio through
External pitch control of the internal tone generators
An LFO (vibrato) with speed and depth
Accent bend (a kind of envelope mod on attack to emulate the human voice changing pitch)
Ensemble Effect (same as the PS-3100)

I also used the MS-01 foot pedal and MS-02 interface from the same range as well as the Roland System 100m and Boss RPS-10 and CE-300 FX."

Step Sequencer & Fixed Filter Bank 914 - An alternative to a VCF for sculpting sequences

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This 'Patch of The Week' shows the Fixed Filter Bank 914 being used instead of a typical voltage-controlled filter to sculpt the sound of a step sequencer pattern, and also how on this particular module the sequencer can also interact with it for more variation and movement. The module is based on the original 914 unit from the vintage Moog modular systems, something Klaus Schulze was very keen on using as part of his 'Big Moog' that he used for much of his music career.
Here the excellent Doepfer Dark Time sequencer is used, but any dual, or combination of 2 step sequences could be used.
Downloadable Patch sheet link and patch notes further down the description.

Synth Rig Live at 'TimeShift - Ars Electronica Festival 2004'

video upload by ParadisoModular

"In 2004, I was invited to ship my entire synth rig to the Ars Electronica Festival happening that September (the festival theme that year was 'Timeshift' as it was their 25-year anniversary and they were excited of having a big modular system return - I was modestly stepping into the shadow of my heros Tomita and Klaus Schulze, who both did large concerts there).

Accordingly, I installed my rig in the Bruckner Haus, and built a new autonomous piece from scratch there every day during the festival. This video compiles a selection of moments as I was evolving the patches - starting from the early 'sound art' pieces and evolving to the later ones that were more organized around a tonal or rhythmic core. Here you see the patches evolving in progress, starting more rough and simple, and ending in their balanced space towards the end of the day.

My stint at Ars Electronica that year caused me to view my rig in a different light, as I found new possibilities and deeper ways of engaging with it - a process that's continued since. In the Bruckner Haus, I produced all of these pieces in a 4-channel mix, which really opens up the dense sound environment the synth produces with these big patches. Here however, you hear audio coming from the camera microphone, limiting the quality. That said, you can hear extended direct/digitally-recorded excerpts from these (and more) final patches on my Bandcamp site - https://joeparadiso.bandcamp.com/"

EEHs Natural Sound Store Unit Zaunkönig Brochure - The FIRST Sampler w/ Realtime Time Stretching

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

This one was spotted and sent in via M Me. I beleive this to be the first post to feature the Zaunkönig/Zaunkoenig. EEH also made the Banana and the DS 500. I just like saying they made the banana. See the EEH label for more. Why it wasn't yellow or even yellowish green, we will never know...

via this auction

"Original brochure, allegedly only 2 devices were built. FIRST sampler with realtime time stretching. Was bought by Akai and in a stripped down version, without realtime, for the S 1000. So the wren is the father of the Akai S 1000"

Update: you can find an article in German on the Zaunkonig here.

Update2: scan of the brochure added below along with a close-up pic of the front of the Zaunkönig, in via an anonymous reader. Also some interesting background added.

CHRONOS - "Cinematic Synthesizer"ᴴᴰ

video upload by Altar Records

"All Links ► https://bnd.lc/cinematicsynthesizer

Chronos, one of the pillar artists of Altar Records is back with a new brand album recorded live on vintage synthesizers.

Synthesizers have been a big part of film music for the past 50 years.
Think Vangelis and "Blade Runner", John Carpenter and "Halloween", Daft Punk and "Tron" movies...

Nick Klimenko aka Chronos is back with a second live-played album exploring all the depths of hardware analog and digital synthesizers.

Eight hardware synthesizers from four different decades were chosen for creating an unique cinematic music atmosphere.

The synth patches were made especially for this album.
Iconic and new ones, rich analog & complex digital sounds are taken from:

Alesis Ion
Yamaha SY-77
Arturia PolyBrute
Roland D50
Kawai K5000
Korg King Korg
Arturia MatrixBrute
Korg DSS-1

Everything was played and recorded live in one take!
Nick has spent hours in his studio, practicing live playing,
sequencing patterns and harmonies, making atmospheric pads for every single piece in this release.
Then he hit the “record” button and played every song at one time.

Dedicated to Klaus Schulze (1947-2022)"

How to use Gated Slew with a Sequencer - Gate signals explained + Sample Hold & Slew module tips

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Slew allows you to slide/glide between notes in a sequence, like those famous TB-303 Acid House tracks and a whole range of other electronic music styles, but if it's not built into your synthesizer it might be confusing how to achieve it, particularly as there are so many sequencer options available, many of which function differently from each other. This video shows how 3 popular desktop step-sequencers can work with the Sample Hold & Slew module - the Doepfer Dark Time, Korg SQ-1, which are both akin to vintage analogue step sequencers, and the Arturia Beatstep, which functions more like a Roland SH-101. I used just one MiniMod VCO going into the Sonic XV Diode Ladder Filter, since the TB-303 also has a diode ladder VCF, and here I've used it in just 6dB mode for extra squelch! However, I'm also using the Sonic XV's built-in wave folder to significantly change the timbre of the incoming triangle wave. The Sample Hold & Slew can function as a separate gated slew module, with selection of up or down slew only, whilst the sample & hold part of it can be used independently, serving as 2 individual modules in 1. Or both functions can be combined, so that random voltages can slide from one to the next, even at very slow speeds, which is great for modulating gradually evolving drone sounds. The Colour and Restrict controls can be used to fine-tune a more desirable range of random frequencies from the noise source. An external clock can be used to sync the random voltages with other modules, sequencers or keyboard gates.

Additionally, audio can be passed through it to use as a noise source for the sample & hold or track & hold. At high clock speeds this feature can be used a very lo-fi bit-crusher, and slowing the rate down will gradually mangle the audio further, eventually reducing it to random beeps!

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for more 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides detailing a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, and each containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Performance: Destination Not Berlin - All-analogue Melodic Set using AJH Synth Eurorack Modular rig.

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This live melodic modular set by 'tomorrow the cure' was originally intended for Superbooth 22 in Berlin, but had to be cancelled due to hearing problems. Since the set was ready to go I thought I'd record it to share with you as another example of what a Mini Mod system can do, and what it can sound like. If this appeals to people there'll be more performance videos in the future, showing AJH Synth modules being used as they're intended - to make music. Hopefully these videos will be an inspiration to people, and compliment the 'User guides' and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will continue to serve as more practical, or instructional videos.

I've dedicated this performance to Klaus Schulze, who passed away recently. His approach to making music and the sounds he created were a great influence of mine personally. Since then Vangelis has also passed. Fortunately we will always have the gift of their music, both to listen to, and be inspired by.

Performance breakdown:
The synth rig used is based around two voices from just 3 VCO's, 1 of which is paired with a Ring SM, which serves as a waveform mixer, and provides a -1 sub-octave. This then feeds the Gemini 2412 filter, whilst the VCO's triangle goes to the Sonic XV for processing by it's wave folder. All of this is mixed in the Muting Mixer & VCA on the top row. This is responsible for the melodic notes and sequence of the first 8 minutes, the drone in the following section, and then the final sequence.

The other 2 VCO's are going to the Ladder Filter, or the Wave Swarm, which is then passed to both the Ladder Filter and the Fixed Filter Bank 914. These are mixed in the middle row's VCA, and the intervals between the pitch of the 2 VCA's in controlled by the Precision Voltages module. This provides the drone in the first 8 minutes, the played notes/chords thereafter, and the choir-like drone during the final section.

Through the sequencer I switch the keyboard control from one voice to the other. I edited out the re-patching between parts to shorten the video - I took my time over the process as my hearing was still not 100%.

Tracks in this performance:
00:00 Intro
00:31 Part 1 - Opening piece
02:15 Part 2 - 'Monotherapy' from 'Grey Days & Old Ways', 2019
07:47 Part 3 - 'Miserere' from 'Two Voices', 2022
17:33 Part 4 - Untitled...
Parts 2 & 3 are available at https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com

'Two Voices' was recorded entirely using the AJH Synth Mini Mod system - the same modules used in this performance. As was 'One System', and the majority of both 'Grey Days...' and 'Lost Soundtracks'."

All-Analogue Synth Album - 'Two Voices' (tomorrow the cure) available now on Bandcamp

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"5 tracks, recorded in real-time/live, using 2 monophonic analogue synth voices from an AJH Synth Eurorack modular synthesizer system. Find this and other 'tomorrow the cure'/DreamsOfWires releases here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com

3 VCO's/oscillators and a total of 4 VCF's/filters were used to perform each track, along with some additional modules, a keyboard (Arturia Keystep), a step sequencer (Keystep or Doepfer Dark Time), a couple of different reverbs and delays that will remain a state secret.

It was recorded over 2 weeks in March '22, in the track order of the 'album'. The tracks were originally composed during 2019, some changing a little since then, some not so much, and some were featured in past YouTube videos in an earlier form - I see all music as a work-in progress.

I only just heard about the passing of Klaus Schulze. His approach to music composition and performance, also his talent for creating sounds, was a great influence on me. A naive dream of mine was to be one of his collaborators one day. Very sad news. His creative spirit will live on in my music, and in that of all the others he has influenced and inspired."

All SEQUENTIAL Sequencers: PRO 3, REV2, AS-1 (Berlin School style)

video upload by Alba Ecstasy

"Prophet REV2 patches 👉 https://www.albaecstasy.ro/prophet-rev2/ Toraiz AS-1 patches 👉 https://www.albaecstasy.ro/toraiz-as-1/

All my @Sequential & Dave Smith Instruments sequencers playing - a Berlin School theme - on their own internal clock, no MIDI connections between them.

During the recording they loose the timing, but for a nice sounding result I adjusted it a little bit in Logic Pro.

The Prophet REV2 is playing in stack A+B mode - a sequence and a low kick, unfortunately recorded on the main output.

All three synths are capable more of these simple sequence lines: step motion, gate sequencing, complex percussions lines and more!

A little bit of Eventide reverb for REV2 & AS-1, since they only have one effect at a time.
All #ambient #patches designed by Alba Ecstasy (a sound pack for #SequentialPRO3 coming soon!)

These are not my best sequencing lines, but I just wanted to share with you a little joy that got me making music again, after we loss Klaus Schulze...

❤️, ae"

FOR KLAUS SCHULZE : DESERT WINDS (live Session)

video upload by KurtzMindfields

"I was wondering how to pay an ultimate homage to the great Klaus Schulze.
My greatest memory of this artist was from the beginning of his career his ability to go alone with his synths on stage and take us into his sonic, cosmic and fabulous universe.
So i plug my synths and recorded live this musical piece, for Klaus, with humility,, and start an improvisation in 3 parts around a sequence work under his influence.
Instruments : SynthR3 ARP 4012 & S.E.M : master stéréo sequencer (with TC M300 & SPX90 reverb/delay), Retro One NRSynth : Big Moog bass & Winds ( + Line 6 Chorus & DD2 Delay), Ancestor NRSynth (ARP 2600) : S&H rain (+ Midiverb reverb), Minimoog D (+ MXR Phaser & Delay), Waldorf Zarembourg : Phased Strings, Mister M Hansy : Mellotron Choir.
Recorded live at Nuage7 Studio, Domaine de Sourzy (06/05/2022)

A Tribute to Klaus Schulze pt. 1

video upload by Rhythmicons

"More to come.

Moogerfoogers at work:
The CP-251 sends noise to the 105B Bass Murf.
Delay is provided by the MF-104z.
The Freqbox provides a bass drone fed to the MF-101 Low Pass Filter.

A Synthesizers Dotcom q960 sends pitch and gate signals to a bank of Moslab 921bs. Those are then filtered by the Moslab 904b Hi Pass filter.
Later, the LFO of the CP251 modulates the rate of the sequencer."

Klaus Schulze: A tribute to his music and legacy

video upload by CatSynth TV

"We play tribute to electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze, who passed away on April 26, 2022.

Schulze was known for his early work with Tangerine Dream, the krautrock band Ash Ra Tempel, and especially his electronic music solo work as part of the so-called Berlin School in the 1970s. He used a wide array of analog synthesizers during this period, but in the ensuing decades he embraced new technologies, including MIDI, computers for music, virtual instruments, and more. He also explored various styles and techniques in his later music.

His final album, Deus Arrakis, will be released in June of 2022."

An amazing tribute by https://catsynth.com.

Klaus Schulze Has Passed Away

Klaus Schulze passed away yesterday at the age of 74.

via Discogs

"Born August 4th 1947 in Berlin, died April 26th 2022, was a german electronic pioneer, composer and musician. Schulze initially made his mark as a drummer, first with the group Psy Free, later with Tangerine Dream (he played on their first album "Electronic Meditation" before he quit) and Ash Ra Tempel (with Manuel Göttsching). In 1971 Schulze started a solo career as an electronic musician and released a couple of heavily experimental albums, 'Irrlicht' and 'Cyborg'. 1973's 'Cyborg' was the first release where he used a 'real' synthesizer, the legendary VCS 3 and later in the 70's he would record albums such as 'Moondawn', 'Mirage' and 'X' and embark on several tours, documented across a number of live albums.

In 1978 he set up the label Innovative Communication and the following year he also launched the pseudonym/project Richard Wahnfried. In the 1980's Schulze continued his hectic release schedule as well as recording several soundtracks and rebuilding his studio (he "went digital" in 1986). In summer 1983 Klaus Schulze 'sold' Innovative Communication.

In the 1990's Schulze recorded several electronic interpretations of works by classical composers (most notably Wagner) as well as collaborating with opera singers and other classical music performers on his own albums. He also started collaborating with German ambient/techno artist Pete Namlook in the series 'The Dark Side Of The Moog' on the latter's Fax label, and steered the Wahnfried project into a more modern techno- and trance-inspired direction.

Schulze '...passed away on April 26, 2022 at the age of 74 after a long disease but all of a sudden'. - statement from his social media pages."

You can find numerous posts mentioning Klaus Schulze over the years here. Below are a few better known performances featuring his work from early on to a more recent performance with Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard.

Arp Odyssey MKIII Analog Synthesizer Vintage 1978-1981 demo of sounds 2

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"ARP ODYSSEY MKIII Analog Synthesizer Vintage 1978-1981 Sounds | HQ DEMO & TUTORIAL

The ARP Odyssey is a classic monophonic / duophonic synthesizer. It came out 1972 and was the competitor of the Minimoog. It can be seen as a cutdown version of the ARP 2600 - although some features where added - the highpass filter and the oscillator synchronisation for example. It has the best sync-lead-sounds I ever heard from a synthesizer! The Odyssey is a real classic - and it sounds classic!

The ARP has a lot of features, so it is very flexible: 2 oscillators (VCO 2 can be used as a second LFO), VCO synchronisation, 2 filters (resonant lowpass & non-resonant highpass), ring modulator, sample & hold, noise generator (white & pink noise), 1 LFO, 2 envelopes (ADSR and AR).

There were three versions of the Odyssey. In my video you see an ARP Odyssey MK III, which has the CV/gate jacks - and an external signal input.

The ARP Odyssey was used by many prominent musicians: Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Herbie Hancock, Gary Numan, Pink Floyd, ABBA, Chick Corea, Tony Banks (Genesis), the Carpenters...

Andy Whitmore started life as a top session keyboard player playing on over 50 hit records before turning his hand to music production. He went on to produce 14 top ten hits. He is a pro when it comes to synthesizers, and here explores the ARP Odyssey as part of a brand new series. One of the most iconic synthesizers ever, Andy’s experience with this Arp classic dates back to the mid-‘90s, and he discusses the basics in his exploration of what makes the ARP Odyssey so great."

Roland Cloud JV 1080 "Planet JV" Soundset 126 Presets

video upload by LFOstore

"The legendary Roland JV-1080 synthesizer is back with virtual Roland Cloud version!

Buy: https://lfo.sellfy.store/p/roland-clo...

Back to 1994 JV was one of the most powerful digital modules with its flexible engine &
beautiful sound combined with great set of effects & drums.

Why its so cool?

Cause besides pianos, bells, cowbells & cheesy accordions, GM applause and Bang! presets - its capable to create great analog sounds, the deepest ambient textures, great moving sequences.

Its like a hardware “Omnisphere” synth with huge effort.

So – what was our first desire when we get our black box?
To create our own soundset for the legend with modern approach ofcourse!

So here it is: “Planet JV” Soundset by LFO.store team: Nick Klimenko & Kirill Polikashin.

126 presets splitted on:

* Vintage analog-like basses & modern digital wavetable * Vintage & Modern leads (yes, Klaus Schulze spirit also there)

* Deepest ambient pads, space drones & tonal soundscapes

* Modern sequences you never heard or seen before on JV

* Beautiful bells, plucks & rhytmic structures

* Fx's with modular approach (cause, why not?)

* Great emulations of classic legends: Moog, Jupiter, JX-series, CS & others.

Enjoy the sounds and rediscover JV world with our soundset!

Our video demo shows almost 50 presets from soundset combined with drum samples & beautiful nature, so take your time, breathing slowly, take your hands out of rewind button ;-)"
