NibbleKnotOne / I watched a video on the Lorre-Mill Double Knot and I shouldn't have / NIBBLER

video upload by BRiES

"Have you heard of this device? It combines a double shift register with some west-coast (lpg?) features to create simple but mesmerizing sequences of blips and bloops. I watched an Instagram reel by Sam Prekop that sounded way too nice, so I had a go at creating something similar in eurorack using Schlappi Engineering's NIBBLERS and THREE BODY.

I don't think I got anywhere close to what a Double Knot can do but these kinds of patches either end up being interesting in their own right or are the stepping stone for incremental understanding of a (new) technique."

The Ciat Lonbarde Peterlin - Peter Blasser Meets Benjolin

Chaos Patterns with the Ciat-Lonbarde Benjolin / Peterlin Synthesizer

video upload by Duskmos

Note the "Peterlin" made it's first appearance with Hainbach on May 7 here on MATRIXSYNTH. This post features a few examples from others, and additional details and pics below.

Above: "In this Signal Colors Palette video, I'm taking a first look at the Ciat-Lonbarde Benjolin / Peterlin, a tiny wooden synth featuring a nod to synthesis history by putting the focus on sound creation with a circuit design inspired by the 'Rungler' by Rob Hordijk.

Hang out while I coax some cool sounds from this wildly experimental sounding synth!"

"Listen to albums, download tracks and support me at https://noctopolis.bandcamp.com/
I was lucky to get a Ciat-Lonbarde Peterlin (why not Blassolin though?) from the first batch at PatchPoint and these are clips from my first don´t-know-what-I-do-sessions with it. First one: solo. Second one: with Lorre Mill Double Knot 3. Third one: with Moog Subharmonicon."

Ciat Lonbarde Peterlin meets Serge VC Resonant Equalizer

video upload by La Synthèse Humaine

This is the first post to feature the Peterlin.

"first patch ring modulates peterlin xor to vcfq with a sine wave - both controlled by rungler. this is mixed with the peterlin audio output in the vc res eq and its bands get modulated by various peterlin outputs

second and third patches have a bit less and a bit more going on... all gets a little confusing and knotted up

check out my newest album Contraluz here: https://critiqueofeverydaylife.bandca..."

"Dressed in their signature banana jack-laden wooden enclosure, the Peterlin is Ciat-Lonbarde's take on the Benjolin: a tribute to the synthesizer designs of Rob Hordijk. Deceptively simple in appearance, the Peterlin is a highly interconnected instrument containing two oscillators, a resonant lowpass filter, and Peter Blasser's take on the infamous Rungler circuit. Clocked by one oscillator, the Rungler is a shift register feeding upon not only its own output, but also listening to the output of the other oscillator to further influence its data with feedback chaos. As the Rungler's CV output is then fed into the oscillators and filter, a range of hefty drones and chaotic noise is possible. Of course, the Ciat-Lonbarde take on this classic experimental instrument is filled with its own mysteries.

"If you’re looking at this you likely know what this is. Two double knots with a neat little mixer section in the middle. I believe there were only a dozen or so made. I’ve also got a case for it from Analog cases that I’ll include. It’s not an official case but it fits good enough (I think the case is made for a keystep)."

Lorre-Mill Double Knot vs Sputnik Spectral Processor

video upload by NOISEBUG

"Taking a trip down the amazon with the Lorre-Mill Double Knot and the Sputnik Modular Spectral Processor.

In this patch we were trying to explore what it would be like to recreate a scene from the amazon using electronic instruments. We have native people drumming, hippos groaning and owls howling.

The Sputnik Spectral Processor is great at isolating frequencies and being able to bring those frequencies in when needed. The optional routing and feedback possibilities are truly endless. While the Double Knot holds the Rhythm and is feeding its sound sources through the Spectral.

Both these products can be found here -

"Unique synthesizer / Sequencer. This is an incredible piece of Musical Technology. It's call the Lorre-Mill Double Knot V2. Comes with 7 Banana Cables (good quality ones too), Original Box, Power Adapter, Printed Manual & Unit. Start using right out of the box. If you never owned one of these before, then your in for a Sonic Shock as you Patch & tweak the 2 Sequencers on board.

You may be asking what is this?

Well the Double Knot is a Semi-Modular synthesizer/Sequencer & is a collection of some analog blocks and simple digital logic blocks to construct Electronic sound patterns. The interface is made up of knobs, switches, and banana plugs for patching. Inside the Double Knot synthesizer there are two voices.

Each voice consists of a Triangle/Square wave oscillator, a shift register sequencer, an enveloper and a voltage controlled amplifier. To set the tempo of the shift registers there is a clock. Functional blocks associated with the clock are an XOR gate and a binary counter. One of the aims of this design is to provide the most flexibility while still having some shape to the piece. The envelopers are triggered by the shift registers unless the trigger inputs are used. The triangle outputs of the oscillators are fed to voltage controlled amplifiers. This makes the Double Knot semi-modular. This system can be used to make complex textural sounds and FM Drones, or Techno Drums at Polyrhythmic Intervals.

This is the V2 version which has enhanced and newer features such as newer enveloper design with mode switch to set trigger mode, loop mode or off. wide range cv input can nearly halt envelope mid-decay for sample/hold type output. trigger input in lieu of the fill input from the previous model.

The shift registers on this unit are CD4015 with 4 bit R2R DAC on the first four stages and logic outputs on the last four stages

Also to add to the percussive effect we can shape the envelopers by feeding the outputs back to the CV inputs and then tweaking the knobs to get the shape to a more dramatic slope. ● Lengthen the decay by turning the decay knob counter-clockwise and add positive modulation by turning the CV level knob clockwise. Now you are bouncing.

One amazing Feature on this unit is the FM Modulation. The FM section allows easy modulation of one oscillator to the other or both at the same time. with a knob for FM amount, a CV in jack that allows control of FM index and a toggle switch to set the modulation routing

This is indeed an amazing piece of Technology. I truly enjoyed this and will miss it a lot. I have a few Youtube Videos so feel free to browse my more recent Videos. just go to youtube and type in the search engine rhampton1914 and my latest is there. An open box Video is on this link."

Lorre-Mill Double Knot 2 Available for Pre-Order

via @ctrl_mod, @ctrlmod

"Excited to announce Pre-Orders are now available for the newly redesigned Double Knot 2 from the always terrific @lorre_mill 🌀#ctrlmod #lorremill #doubleknot2 #doubleknot #synthesizer #synth #bananacables"

via Control:

"The second version of the Double Knot synthezier is right here! An all analog sound box for patching and listening to shifting rhythms and textures. Also good for techno. Knobs for setting rates and amounts, Banana connection points for wiring and re-wiring the sound of the system. This version two of the Double Knot has a lot of the same structure as the first but now with some more heady features such as volume knobs, larger buttons and Blue on Blue graphics just to name a few.

Envelopers
New enveloper design with mode switch to set trigger mode, loop mode or off. Wide range CV input can nearly halt envelope mid-decay for sample/hold type output. Trigger input in lieu of the fill input from the previous model.

Amplitude
Controls for amplitude modulation and amplifier offset for both channels. CV inputs for each channel that are normaled to the enveloper output, can be patched to other sources for other AM effects.

Oscillators
Very same oscillators as the first version. Triangle and square outputs, sync and CV inputs. Knobs for pitch and modulation amount.

Frequency Modulation
The FM section allows easy modulation of one oscillator to the other or both at the same time. With a knob for FM amount, a CV in jack that allows control of FM index and a toggle switch to set the modulation routing.

Audio output
3.5mm audio line output on the back of the unit closest to the amplitude controls. This is a stereo output with one synth channel per side.

Power
Power draw is 12V DC ~200ma on a 5.5 x 2.1mm barrel connector with Positive voltage on the center pin. self-resettable 350ma PTC fuse for overcurrent protection. Diode for reverse voltage protection. Ground banana jack is next to the power input on the back. This is for sharing ground between the double knot and other banana jack devices."

Ensemble 1 with Grackler, Double Knot, Sidrax & Mute Synth

Published on Apr 23, 2019 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"A little improvisation in the studio using four inspiring little instruments. Beginning with the Mroztronium Grackler and Dirty Electronics Mute Synth creating abstract noises and textures, followed by a deep pulse from the Lorre Mill Double Knot and playing live on top with the Chat Lonbarde Sidrax. The film is out of synch and I apologise for that but it hopefully captures the mood. A tiny moment in a creative day."

Lorre-Mill Double Knot & Keyed Mosstone In-depth Overview / Demos

Published on Aug 26, 2018 Allieway Audio

1. Lorre-Mill Double Knot (in-depth overview / demo)
"TO SKIP THE BORING EXPLANATION SKIP TO 17:06

A couple years too late, the first video of the Double Knot on the internet with any explanation of what the heck is going on! Everything here is improvised and mainly didactic but I hope it at least shows you why I love this thing so much. I haven't even touched the surface of the many tricks I have learned so far!

Let me know what you think :)

EDIT: Just rewatched, and I'm now aware that the time signature at 28:15 was 4/4. I think I may have forgotten how to count at that moment :P"
2. Lorre-Mill Double Knot: Exploring Drones!
DISCLAIMER: I do not recommend using touch-jacks as I do in this video without sufficient understanding of the risks involved in touching something metal that's connected to a power outlet. I do not accept liability if you hurt yourself during reckless use of touch-jacks!

My last video was focused on explaining the double knot's different bits and exploring it's rhythmic possibilities, so I figured my next video on it should show off it's amazing capacities for creating sonic textures at audio rate!

I get a little lost in this video, toward the end - playing with this synth tends to put me in a sort of trance that's a bit hard to escape at times - you get tangled up in the knots I suppose :D

A lot of this video's audio is very dry for explanation purposes, but hopefully the end of the video shows how powerful this synth can be with for drones with some fx processing (I'm using the OTO Bam for reverb, by the way). Also, the audio in this vid is mono to prevent you only hearing the synth through one ear at parts of the demonstration, but you can imagine how crazy the stereo image of the knot's two sides can be at if you mix in stereo!

Leave a comment and tell me what you think, I'm hoping to make a lot more videos now that I've got a less shitty tripod, so I appreciate any feedback! Hope you enjoyed ^_^
3. Lorre-Mill Keyed Mosstone (in-depth overview / demo)
"I'm back again with a new in-depth explanation / video manual / rambleathon, this time about Lorre-Mill's newest synth, the Keyed Mosstone!

I originally intended this video to have a longer demo/screwaround session at the end after all the talking, but I realized after finishing my initial overview that I was actually very close to running late for a date I had later that day - one of the problems with shooting hour-long videos in one take! I'll be making a more extensive jam session video very soon, with MUCH less talking :)

Speaking of problems with hour-long vids, my phone's camera is quite nice but has a frustrating limitation - it can only handle vids of 2gb, and anything longer will cause it to stop recording and start up a new vid, leaving a noticable second-long gap. I'll try to record in several parts in the future to try to avoid getting cut off - for this video, I interspersed the cuts (there are two) with a transcript of the few words missed.

By the way, I did realized after finishing up that I forgot to illustrate the sound of the second random's digital noise when applied to various sound parameters (e.g. wavefolding), which is an important aspect of the synth's sound - I'll make sure to cover this first thing in my next video on the Mosstone!

Also, another minor correction - the gate output in the very bottom left of the synth is actually a trigger (spike) output, not a gate: it just does a quick trigger when you press any (circle) key. Handy for triggering the randoms!

Let me know what you think, and if you have any other questions about this synth, or requests for future videos, especially featuring the knot and mosstone, as they are the best of friends!"
