Moog Matriarch Synthesizer Demos with Mikael Jorgensen & Philip Cornish

Moog Matriarch Synthesizer Demo with Mikael Jorgensen - All Playing, No Talking Published on Apr 25, 2019 Musician's Friend

"Moog Matriarch is a semi-modular, 4-note paraphonic synthesizer and the newest member of the Mother family of synths.

Demoed here by Mikael Jorgensen of Wilco, Matriarch's design is based on some of Bob Moog's most revered circuits. The all-analog signal path features 4 powerful VCOs, dual ladder filters, stereo delay, an arpeggiator and a performance friendly 256-note sequencer.

The 4 VCO design can be played in three distinct modes: 4-note paraphonic, 2-note paraphonic and monophonic. Each oscillator can select from a variety of waveshapes and octaves, allowing you to create incredibly rich and harmonically complex sounds. As mentioned, Matriarch features two classic Moog Ladder Filters that can be used in three distinct modes: parallel (High Pass/Low Pass), stereo (Low Pass/Low Pass), and series (HP/LP).

Where Grandmother featured an analog spring reverb, Matriarch features a dual analog delay inspired by the MF-104M Moogerfooger circuit. This delay module offers up to 700ms of stereo or ping-pong style repeats.

Although Matriarch has 90 patch points, enough to satisfy even the most adventurous of sound designers, it can be played right out of the box thanks to its intuitive layout and signal flow."

New Moog Matriarch Revealed

Published on Apr 24, 2019 Moog Music Inc

"Matriarch: Place / Time / Memory illuminates the interconnectedness between one’s sense of place, our perceptions of sound organized in time, and the impressions they leave behind.

Exploring the Moog Matriarch synthesizer from their personal home studios, multi-instrumentalist Lisa Bella Donna, Ghostly Intl. electronic producer Max Ravitz (Patricia), Anthem / Call of Duty / Assassins Creed composer Sarah Schachner and Paris Strother of Grammy-nominated R&B duo We Are KING, express 4 unique sonic perspectives on the new instrument within the context of their own creative environments."

Update:I'm not seeing the White Noise Generator, Spring Reverb, or Linear FM that are featured on the Grandmother. Interesting if this is indeed the case, and good news for those that invested in a Grandmother. Some quick diffs compared to the Grandmother:

49 velocity sensitive keys with aftertouch vs 32 velocity minus aftertouch
4 oscillators vs 2
2 filters vs 1
Dual VCA
Second simple LFO
Analog Delay
3 bipolar attenuators with ring mod vs 1
2x4 mults vs. 1x4
Mono, duo, & 4 note paraphonic vs Mono
256 step sequencer adds 4 note per step & 12 stored patterns vs 3
90 patch points (for the added modules) vs 41

And again, the Matriarch appears to be missing the White Noise Generator, Spring Reverb, and Linear FM on the Grandmother.

Update2: new hi-res image. It looks like Noise and Linear FM are there.  So we have the Stereo Delay in place of Spring Reverb.

"The Pinnacle of Moog's Semi-Modular Family of Analog Synthesizers.

Moog Matriarch is a patchable 4-note paraphonic analog synthesizer with a built-in Sequencer, Arpeggiator, stereo Ladder Filters, and stereo Analog Delay. Create rich evolving chord patterns immediately with 'no patching required', then tap into an abundance of inspiring textures, new sounds, and an endless supply of happy accidents through Matriarch’s 90 modular patch points. Based on the vintage circuitry of classic Moog synthesizer modules, Matriarch is a catalyst for creative ideas and a medium for multidimensional expression.

Sequence and perform in mono, duo, and 4-note paraphonic modes.

Classic and ping-pong style repeats with lush infinite delay trails.

Create, mangle and explore the endless expanse of sound with 90 modular patch points.

Matriarch is an analog synthesizer with an emphasis on imagination. The pinnacle of Moog’s semi-modular family of synthesizers, Matriarch’s patchable architecture and vintage Moog circuits reward open exploration with endless sonic possibilities and unparalleled analog sound.

Easily create rich harmonic shapes with up to 4 notes of paraphony that can be sequenced, saved, and shifted with Matriarch’s intuitive 256 step sequencer, or stack the analog VCOs to play on a massive 4 oscillator mono synth.
With a deep assortment of synthesis modules based on Bob Moog’s original circuit designs, Matriarch’s 100% analog signal path spans a dynamic sonic vocabulary – from overdriven monophonic bass to gently evolving paraphonic plucks that cycle through waveshapes into a wash of infinite delay trails. Coupling the power of vintage stereo ladder filters, dual Envelope Generators, stereo Analog Delays, and stereo VCAs, Matriarch delivers a multidimensional sound that empowers the sonic exploration of space and time.

Though Matriarch’s semi-modular design requires absolutely no patching, 90 modular patch points are easily accessible throughout the panel via the included 3.5mm patch cables. This powerful electronic instrument is a highly-versatile addition to any stage or studio that can effortlessly transform from a performance keyboard to a fully modular analog synthesizer at a moment’s notice.

In addition to its standalone function, Matriarch is also an ideal processor of external sound sources and a powerful keyboard front-end for expanding a DFAM, Mother-32, Grandmother, or Eurorack modular system.

Lisa Bella Donna - Impression for Moog Matriarch, 16MM Film, & Magnetic Tape

Published on Apr 26, 2019 Lisa Bella Donna

"Variations on a few themes I recorded with the Moog Matriarch. One of which appears as the opening credits for the beautiful & breathtaking premiere film that Moog composed for the Matriarch. This particular piece has some heavy use of analog treatment during mixdown, including combing the synthesizer with some haunting field recordings to conjure some thematic contrast. However all the synthesis you hear is the amazing Moog Matriarch prototype.

Recorded, mixed, & manipulated on a Tascam 388 and mixed to an Otari MX5050

Moog Matriarch Analog Paraphonic Four Oscillator Dual Filter Synthesizer

Published on Apr 29, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Check out our article about the Matriarch here: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal...

The Matriarch is Moog's newest semi-modular keyboard which has four oscillators and two filters as well as a stereo analog delay. The four oscillators can be used in monophonic, duophonic or paraphonic modes. Since the Matriarch is semi-modular all types of FM and other modulation between oscillators is possible allowing the creation of complex and interesting timbres.

The filter section features two great sounding Moog filters that can be used in stereo or highpass/lowpass configurations. The filter runs into a stereo BBD analog delay that can run at short times creating reverb like sounds or longer times for standard delay or ping pong delay sounds.

There are many utility patching modules on the Matriarch including multiples, CV controlled attenuverters and LFOs. The Matriarch can be patched internally or with eurorack modular synthesizers.

Moog Matriarch Classical Patches. Lead, Bass, Pluck, Arp

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for the semi-modular synth Moog Matriarch.
This bank of presets has been highly requested by customers who enjoyed my 'Analog Classics' soundset for the Grandmother. Matriarch "Analog Classics" is based on the Grandmother soundset, but with some differences. I took Grandmother patches and modified them with the unique Matriarch features. Also, I removed chords/drones (this type of presets can be found in my Matriarch "Polychrome" soundset) and added some new arps, leads, and plucks.

Matriarch «Analog Classics» is a collection of 50 patches: 15 Leads, 13 Basses, 14 Arps, and 8 Plucks.
It features famous sounds found in electronic tracks spanning from vintage to modern, musical solo timbres and basses suitable for various instrumental genres such as jazz, funk, rock, pop, and indie. There are also some experimental patches that add a unique touch to your music, combining the beloved characteristics of vintage synths with new possibilities and sound character introduced by the Matriarch.

🎧 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/moog/

These presets offer a wide range of tones, from retro and vintage to modern, spanning soft, gentle, deep, and aggressive, as well as harsh, bright, and punchy sounds.

The soundset is suitable for all genres of electronic music, including Techno, House, Trance, Lounge, Downtempo, Funk, Disco, Pop, Acid, Hardcore, IDM, Drum'n'Bass, Breaks, Breakbeat, Trap, Electro, Ambient, Dubstep, EDM, Synth-Pop and others.

The soundset is presented in PDF format. Each page contains notes explaining how the patch works, which parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance. By following these notes and making conscious adjustments, you can explore the depth of the synth.

Each patch includes an audio example, demonstrating how it's supposed to sound. These examples use only the Matriarch Delay without external effects.
To recreate these presets, you'll need up to 13 patch cords, including long ones.
Make sure your firmware is v1.2.3 or higher for full compatibility with my presets.

Ambient jam with Moog Matriarch and Subsequent 37, Strymon Big Sky, Eventide Space and Timefactor

Published on Oct 31, 2019 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the thoughtfulness that comes with a beautiful autumn day. The Moog Matriarch is still basically impossible to find in Canada, but a local acquaintance got one from the States and wasn't super connecting with it. I took it home to try and I'm happy to say it sounds as good as I'd hoped. The Matriarch's oscillators are bright, its stereo filter adds a lot of colour, and its stereo analogue delay sounds dark and moody. It's fantastic, and I wrote this sequence within an hour or so of tinkering with it.

Maybe the biggest surprise, though, was how well the Moog Subsequent 37 stands up to it. The Subsequent 37's drive manages to help it carve out some space in the mix, and its filter and vibrato are ridiculously expressive. While it's missing the Matriarch's stereo features, and doesn't have the same amount of paraphony, I'd say the Subsequent 37 sounds just as good when run through the Eventide delay and reverb.

Moog Matriarch + Strymon Big Sky — Synth sequence
Moog Subsequent 37 + Eventide Timefactor + Eventide Space — Lead

Written and performed within a 3-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Moog Matriarch analog synth and Korg Nu Tekt NTS-1 digital synthesizer, soundscaping and jamming fun

Published on Feb 6, 2020 Expanding Sound

"Last week i had some fun playing with the NTS-1 and some of my Korg Volcas. This week I figured it'd be fun to use the effects on a bigger synth, like the Moog Matriarch.

I connected the Matriarch to the NTS-1 by using the midi connection first. The Matriarch is the Midi Controller for the NTS-1s digital oscillator. I used my little bits 1/8th inch to midi adapter and it seemed to work fine. Although there was an occasional Midi Drift. I also connected the Matriarch to the NTS-1 through the audio input, so all sound is coming from the NTS-1's headphone jack/audio output. This way the NTS-1 can process the Matriarch with its effect section. The reverbs made the Matriarch sound even bigger, and one of the surprising stand out effects was the flanger! I usually hate flanger on my guitar but really enjoyed how it sounded here on the NTS-1 with the Matriarch. The oscillators blend very nicely together, sometimes surprisingly so. It was easy to make some really nice soundscapes and ambient chords using both keyboards at once.

I'm not really playing a song here, just exploring some sounds..... I tried to cut and move on when I felt like I was dragging at some points. It's mostly a little noodling and playing with the Matriarchs sequencer and the NTS-1's arpeggiator here and there. Hope you enjoy it!"

Moog Matriarch: 50 Patches for Arps/Seqs & Generative-Style

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular synth Moog Matriarch.
'Round Robin' is a collection of 50 presets for Arpeggios and Sequences. The bank covers a wide range of tones: warm, deep, bright, metallic, mallet, soft, expressive, dreamy, dark, evolving, detuned, inharmonic, noisy, distorted and others.
📕 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/moog/

The presets vary greatly from the point of view of complexity: some are simpler and will work in any track and genre, some are experimental and will make your tracks sound unique.

The collection also includes generative-style patches, they have complex modulations and movement, they have long and shorts steps, dark and bright tones, they have tempo variation, unexpected and unpredictable splashes of sound...

Generative patch may be a good addition to (or a lead part of) ambient or techno tracks, jams and performances. You may also record fragments into your DAW or sampler, slice it to one-shots or make loops - you’ll get a unique material for further processing.

It is supposed that the internal Matriarch Arp/Seq should be used for these presets. Choose Arp or Seq mode (record a pattern), push/hold the keys and have fun tweaking the parameters. All my audio examples were made with the built-in Arp/Seq. Some presets use Arp/Seq Rate modulation. In this case, using the internal Arp/Seq is obligatory.

Of course, you may also try playing the keys (with Arp/Seq off) or use an external sequencer/DAW.

Matriarch has great tools for stereo sound: two filters, independent VCAs, BBD Delay. I modulated them a lot to create wide and beautiful patches, that can be hardly recreated on other hardware (especially analog) synths. Matriarch has an absolutely fantastic feature set and I tried to intensively use it to create exclusive timbres.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn many things about the synth and discover its true depth.

Each patch has an audio example, it helps to understand how a patch is supposed to sound. No external effects on the examples, Matriarch Delay only.

To recreate these presets, you need up 16 patch cords, including long ones.

You should have firmware v1.2.3 or higher for full compatibility with my presets.

Pure Mat ❤️ (Moog Matriarch Dark // Arturia Keystep Pro) live jam, analog synth, raw sound

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Pure Matriarch raw sound: that was the main idea behind this jam!
I used the Arturia Keystep Pro to play the Matriarch mainly for 2 reasons: the chord memory and scale features of the KSP and the easiness to visualize the notes being played by the Keystep's ARP 😃

What's happening?
1- The jam starts with only one oscillator playing on the Matriarch. I then gradually open up the filter and mix in the 3 other oscillators.
2- At the end I switch on the SYNC on the Matriarch and we can clearly hear the sharp and metallic sound, very characteristic of synced oscillators 🤘
3-The lovely analog stereo delay is playing an important role here in the sound as it is adding fluctuations (its time and feedback being respectively modulated by its 2 LFOs) and stereo width.
4-Note that I used on the Matriarch the SPLIT VCA mode where the Filter Envelope Generator signal controls the level of VCA 1 (Left output), and the Amplitude Envelope Generator signal controls the level of VCA 2 (Right output).

Berlin School live performance at home - "Analog crabs"

video upload by Caught In Joy

"'Analog crabs' is my Berlin School electronic music performance from my latest album "La chica de la playa" out on Bandcamp: https://caughtinjoy.bandcamp.com/albu...

Playing the analog synthesizers, modular drum machines and guitar pedals in a Berlin School music style is like embarking on an electronic journey through time and space. As your fingers dance across the synthesizer's lush, vintage-style keys, you unleash a sonic universe that harkens back to the iconic soundscapes of the 1970s pioneers like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Jean-Michel Jarre.

I hope these analog warmth and organic textures will transport you to a sonic realm where pulsating sequencers guide your way through mysterious, cosmic landscapes on a rainy Berlin night.

All my recent songs are fully improvised and performed "dawlessly". Creating "dawless" electronic music in a home studio involves producing music without using a traditional Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Instead, hardware synthesizers, modular synths and effects are used to create, sequence, and manipulate sounds directly. This approach can provide a hands-on, tactile experience and encourage creativity by relying on physical gear rather than a computer interface. It allows for a more immediate and intuitive workflow, with real-time control over parameters, resulting in a unique sonic character.

Moog Matriarch Delay Comparison: Matriarch, MF 104m and Moog 500 series analog delay

Published on Sep 19, 2019 Modular Landing

"In response to a request, here is a comparison of the Moog Matriarch analog delay with two other Moog analog delays: the Moogerfooger MF-104m and the Moog 500 series analog delay. The Matriarch is supposedly modeled after the Moog 500 series. So how close does it get? Let me know what you think in the comments!

BTW: I tried to level match them but it's a quickly made video so apologies if it's not exact."

Moog Matriarch // Some Mellow Sounds of Raw Moog Beauty

video by Dexba

"Moog Matriarch. I've said everything already.
In this first video, I wanted to focus on all the components' intrinsic quality and how beautiful a sound can get even without extreme patching. The only cables you will see are for automating the Spacing of the filter!

Matriarch is the current flagship (if we don't take into consideration the Moog One, a halo synth by features and price) in production by Moog, and for me, it ticks all the boxes:
- Pure analog goodness from the beefy oscillators (4 of them!) to the gorgeous filter and the delay
- Creativity & tradition, with the stereo filter and all the patching capabilities
- Onboard FX, and what an FX! MF104 built right into the synth

Yes, we can all agree that it still isn't the polysynth we maybe wanted, especially because not many people are considering buying the ONE, the price is a bit steep, but man, oh man, if that isn't the best Moog in production...
Because of this, I am also selling my Subsequent 37, an interesting project for sure, but with a character not even close to what the Matriarch can offer without a sweat.

Pure analog goodness and I am all for it!
Enjoy ✨"

Ambient cassette w/ Moog Matriarch drone mode, Octatrack, Marantz PMD430, Eventide Space

Published on May 7, 2020 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the drone mode on the Moog Matriarch. Here I recorded the drone to cassette tape via the Marantz PMD430, along with some mangled samples on the Octatrack. The sound of cassette tape is embedded in my psyche.

While I usually only play the Matriarch in drone mode when I'm looking to relax/decompress, I thought I'd record the results here. It's my first track of this sort, and in retrospect there are things I'd do differently, but as an exploration, I'm happy with this initial foray into droning ambient.

Thanks to friend Matt Campbell for lending me the Marantz.
