Strum - Modular Patch by Richard Devine

Strum - Modular Patch from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

"This was a patch experiment using the new Mutable Instruments Rings/Clouds Modules, and trying to create strumming/plucking guitar like sounds within a patch. The inspiration came from playing around with the Clouds Parasites 1.3 alternate firmware running in the Resonator mode highlighting the "scatter" (or strum) function. The master clock was the Tiptop Circadian Rhythms module, taking the first 4 outputs into my Nord Drum 2 for the Kick, snare, closed and open hi-hats. From there the clock output from the CR was multiplied and then sent to the Modcan Touch Sequencer. First row output from the TS was sent to the intellijel Shapeshifter creating a two note baseline sequence that comes in at 1:58. The second sequence Row2 output from the TS was sent to the "ALM Akemie's Castle" module OSC A output using the chord function, that comes in at 25 seconds. The gates from the modcan where set to a 16th's pulse sequence. Modulation from the synthesis technology E102 Quad Temporal Shifter output 1 modulating the Multiplier input on Operator 1. The 2, 3 and 4 outputs from the E102 where also modulating the Operator 2, 3, and 4 inputs on the Akemie's Castle. This was creating the harmonic timbre changing as the sequence was playing.

The slowly evolving sweeping noise textures that come in at 1:09 is from the Music Thing Radio Music module. The sample was a white noise sampled lightly filtered and then sent to the intellijel HexVCA with the amplitude CV control via a Intellijel Dixie modulating from slow to high rates (free running). The Make Noise Rene was being externally clocked from the Circadian Rhythm, and was sending out a quantized output to the Mutable Instruments Clouds pitch input creating the chord guitar sequence. The strum sounds on Clouds was played by the 4ms QCD running in 32th division output into the Trigger input. The freeze input was also triggered by a Ladik R-110 Random clock module. The combination of the two created the trill chord like strums.

The bass guitar tone sound that comes in at 1:24 are from the MakeNoise Mysteron, that is being sequenced by the Modcan Touch Sequencer, Row Output 3 was programmed in the same key but a lower octave. The "Rings" module was creating slow attack soft high pitched chords in reverb that come around 2:50. There was additional processing of the Clouds output that was sent into the Tiptop ZDSP module running the "Halls of Vahalla" card program 8 "Ginnungagap" creating the high pitch octave deep reverb shimmer effects. The harmonic slow swells that come in at 3:30 where created using another intellijel Dixie oscillator sine output running into an Strymon "Big Sky" pedal being harmonically controlled by an intellijel µScale V1. The output was being played slowly then processed using the "Choral" mode, creating the slow shimmer swells. The entire mix was sent into the Eventide Space pedal using the "Corridors" patch.

Synth Jams by Jay Hosking

Published on Jul 26, 2019 Jay Hosking

Spotted the first video in the playlist above on discchord.com. The Playlist contains 21 videos. You can use the player controls to skip around. Descriptions for each are below. All videos feature various gear so you should be able to get an idea of some of the capabilities of each featured. You can check out Jay Hosking's music at https://jayhosking.bandcamp.com/.

Note, more will likely get added over time. The following playlist is as of this post:

1. Jam w/ Vermona PERfourMER MkII, Elektron Analog Rytm MkII, OTO Bam, Styrmon Big Sky, Fugue Machine
A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by some pretty tough news that has me sentimental.

I loved the Elektron Analog Four MkII so much that I picked up the Analog Rytm MkII. My feelings on the Rytm are mixed. On the one hand, it's missing that spontaneity and spark of units like the Arturia DrumBrute Impact and Teenage Engineering OP-Z, with no readymade performance effects, roller bar, or global randomization, and a slower workflow. On the other hand, I really like its analogue sound engines, any unused tracks can be converted into impressive analogue mono synths, it does beautiful things to samples, and like all Elektron boxes it integrates the effects into the sequencer really nicely.

As for the Vermona PERfourMER MkII, I'd been pining over it for ages, and it was fun to finally tinker with it. The Perfourmer definitely excels in the mid- and high- range, and I love how the independent voices making really interesting voices for chords.

Vermona PERfourMER MkII + OTO Bam — Three synths (left chord note, right chord note, melody)
Vermona PERfourMER MkII + Strymon Big Sky — Bass chord note synth
Elektron Analog Rytm MkII — Drums, samples, sample melody, punchy bass
Fugue Machine (iOS) — Sequencing
IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo — MIDI out from iOS

Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little sidechain compression on the Perfourmer (to emphasize the sound that the Rytm was already making), and compression/limiting on the master.

'Moonlight Sonata' - Eurorack Modular Rendition

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
#modular #eurorack #moonlightsonata

This time around all sounds that are being heard, come from the modular system, but the entire sequence is comprised of 4 monophonic MIDI tracks inside of Ableton. Each of the tracks has a CV Instrument plugin from the CV tools package. I am using my Expert Sleepers ES-9, which is a DC-coupled interface, which allows me to send clock data, CV, and Gate outputs directly from Ableton into eurorack modular without a need of a MIDI interface. I am using 4 monophonic tracks because the interface has 8 DC-coupled outputs, which are being used as follows:
1- Gate for melody track 1
The first gate out is going into the first input on the Ornament & Crime Digital Multi-function module in 4 x EG mode, which gives it 4 variable-clock envelope generators with a visual oscilloscope. From there, gate output from o_C goes into Mutable Instruments Plaits as a trigger input. The output of plaits goes through the first channel of Qu-Bit Tone for filtering, and then into the first channel on a quad VCA, and then into the first audio output on the ES-9.
2- Pitch/CV for melody track 1
The first pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Mutable Instruments Plaits, to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s first monophonic track.
3- Gate from melody track 2
The 2nd gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the Strum input on the Mutable Instruments Rings, which is the 2nd oscillator in this patch. From Rings we have the identical signal patch as on the first track, but on the 2nd channel of each subsequent module. (Filter → VCA → Out)
4- Pitch/CV for melody track 2
The second pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Mutable Instruments Rings, to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s second monophonic track.
5- Gate for melody track 3
The 3rd gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the CV input on 3rd channel of my VCA: Mutable Instruments Veils. Then it goes right into the audio output 3 on the ES-9.
6- Pitch/CV for melody track 3
The third pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Instruō Cš-L (Dual Complex Oscillator), to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s third monophonic track.
7- Gate for melody track 4
The 4th gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the CV input on the 4th channel of my VCA: Mutable Instruments Veils. Then it goes right into the audio output 4 on the ES-9.
8- Pitch/CV for melody track 4
The fourth pitch/CV out is going into the second channel’s 1V/Oct input on the Instruō Cš-L (Dual Complex Oscillator), to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s third monophonic track.

Now we get into the surround and miscellaneous modulations, which control the piece’s stereo movement, giving it spaciousness and an emotional feel. The output from Mutable Instruments Plaits is split, the first route is going just like it is described in the first 2 points above. The split output is going into the Mutable Instruments Clouds (which is being heavily modulated by the Divkid øchd module (8 drifting LFO). And then from there, it is going stereo l/r out into the ES-9s extra inputs. The Rings output follows the same convention, as it is also being split, but it on the other hand goes through Instruō Arbhar, and then into Instruō Lúbadh for additional processing. The stereo output from Arbhar is going into the ES-9, and one of the outputs from there is being split to also go into the Lúbadh. (Arbhar is a granular processor, and Lúbadh is a digital 2-track reel-to-reel tape machine)

Additional multi-band compression, EQ, and Limiting are done in the post inside of Ableton on the Bus level to minimize the unnecessarily large amount of processing, for a clear modular tonality.

This is what it sounds like when you control half your modular with Mutable Instruments Tides...

Cables For Clouds

"This is a leftover synth jam recorded on 09.22.2020
I sent Tides into 3 filters, Plaits, Rings, Elements and a delay.
I fed the reverb into a VCA/ envelope (which ends up sounding like a wall of white noise)

Whaleseq/1812 [3U Eurorack/Monome Grid/White Whale]

Published on Apr 29, 2016 S. B. Arweiler

"PATCH NOTES:
The whole patch is controlled by the Monome White Whale with one CV channel controlling the Mutable Instruments Braids in WMAP mode, and the second CV channel controlling the Mutable Instruments Rings. One gate channel of the White Whale triggers the Tip Top BD808 bass drum, the second gate channel triggers an envelope which controls Braids's output through a MakeNoise Optomix. Another gate channel triggers Strum on the Rings. The fourth gate channel triggers the Reset of the MusicThing RadioMusic, which plays a one note guitar chord sample which then again is being sent through the Mutable Instruments Clouds. Intellijel Quadra LFOs do some modulation on Braids and Rings, and the Evaton Technologies RF Nomad through the second OptoMix channel provides some noisy percussion.

PATCH NOTES

Kick
Intellijel Dixie sine with the Erica Synths Polivoks Envelope Generator sending a sharp envelope to the Intellijel Dixie Controller exponential FM input (attenuated) to sweep the sine's pitch to create the kick. No VCA was used to cut off the sound as the pitch goes so low into the mixer is pretty inaudible in this patch.

Clap
Erica Synths Polivoks Modulator white noise into the Intellijel uVCA with modulation of the VCA from the WMD Multi-mode Envelope. This then goes into the Livewire Frequensteiner filter in band pass mode to shape the noise before going into my mixers.

16th note cymbal
Mutable Instruments Braids with the new 1.7 firmware in the new cymbal CYMB mode. The filtering/timbre and noise/oscillator blend along with tuning was moved manually in the video. Braids internal envelopes control the level before going to my mixer.

Offbeat hi hat
A mult. of the Polivoks Modulator noise going into the Erica Synths Polivoks Filter in band pass mode then into the Erica Synths Polivoks VCA with the trigger from ALM's Pamela's Workout going to modulate the VCA. The trigger worked out at a nice length with an envelope for the sound.

Main percussion
Mutable Instruments Elements gate rhythm triggered and generated from Pamela's Workout. I have the Polivoks Modulator LFO output modulating the Strike's Mallet type, one channel of Mutable Instruments Peaks modulating the damping of the resonator, LFO 2 from Synthesis Tech's E355 dual wavetable LFO modulating the resonator's geometry and a Frequency Central Ultra Wave modulating the resonator's position. I manually adjusted Elements coarse tuning, Blow (volume, and air flow) and space parameters. If all that sounds confusing check out the Elements page on MutableInstruments.net there's a great manual and material on their and … more importantly cough cough … go watch my overview video on my channel.

Drum mixing
Drums were mixed in the Erica Synths Polivoks Mixer and also the Manhattan Analog CP3 Mixer before going into a single channel of a Bubblesound VCA4- which I'm using as an output mixer.

Bass
Neutron Sound - Orgone Accumulator as a bass drone with modulation of the FM index from Peaks in LFO mode. This then goes into a VCA4p channel.

Drone
This is how the patch started, someone asked me about Synthesis Tech's E350 and more specifically FM on the E350. So the sound source is the E350 with FM modulation from a TipTop Audio Z3000's sine wave. The Z3000's 1V/oct is modulated by the Frequency Central System X Sample & Hold (with a lot of onboard lag/slew). The E350 shines with subtle modulation of it's wavetables so the E355 LFO2 is modulating the X wavetable position. The E350's output then goes into a Mutable Instruments Ripples (which is modulating from a different LFO from Peaks) before going into Mutable Instruments Clouds (realtime granular processing). Clouds sample/playback position and grain size are modulated from both of the Peaks LFO channels, grain density is modulated from the System X Sample & Hold and Texture is modulated from LFO1 on the E355. The output then goes into one channel of the Manhattan Analog MA35 filter and is also split into the Flame FX6. The Flame FX6 is in Reverb mode and that output then goes into channel 2 on the MA35. The filtering (low pass) and input volume of the MA35 is modulated live as well as the Bubblesound uLFO sending it's shaped sine output to modulate the MA35's cut off. As with the use of Elements in this patch … If all that sounds confusing check out the Clouds page on MutableInstruments.net there's a great manual and material on their and … more importantly cough cough … go watch my overview video on my channel."
