Microvolt 3900 Introduction Video & Official Press Release

Published on Feb 13, 2018 Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

"A brief tour of the Microvolt 3900. A modern, semi-modular synthesizer inspired by the instruments designed by our heroes. The Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900 takes a new approach to building a raw, analog monosynth with a host of unconventional and inspirational features. Patch cables optional."

Update: And the official press release:

"Pittsburgh pens love letter to the analogue monosynth with Microvolt 3900 desktop delight

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA: having turned heads and opened ears at The 2018 NAMM Show last month in Anaheim, CA, electronic instruments-maker Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers is proud to announce that it is taking preorders on its Microvolt 3900 — duly destined to delight desktop synthesizer supporters anywhere as a modern, semi-modular synthesizer inspired by the instruments designed by the company’s heroes, though taking a new approach to building a contemporary analogue monosynth with a host of innovative and unconventional features that makes it stand out from the sound of the crowd — as of February 14…

Thanks to Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers’ new temperature-stabilised, dual-VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) oscillator core, the analogue audio engine of the Microvolt 3900 feeds a set of timbral wave-shapers carefully crafted for deep harmonic shaping, allowing a layer of additive synthesis alongside the classic synthesis waveforms. Waveforms are fed into the binary filter, a custom state-variable filter architecture allowing for near-infinite resonance — with or without self- oscillation. Sonically speaking, this creates a juicy, fluid filter, adding depth and energy to the oscillator that can capably scream on demand!

Taiga - Paraphonic Modular Synthesizer
New desktop synth from Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers packs a powerful punch with 3 oscillators, wave folders, innovative vactrol-less dynamics, and more!

January 31st, 2023 - Pittsburgh, PA - Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers today announced Taiga, a 3-oscillator paraphonic synthesizer.

Taiga is a powerful, complete, modern, and modular instrument that's a tour de force of the Pennsylvania based analog synth R&D team's recent inventions. Taiga wraps these new tools into a surprisingly accessible package that provides a massive pallet of 100% analog sounds to its users.

Taiga’s sound can be attributed to three uniquely Pittsburgh innovations. A trio of huge analog oscillators, the unmistakably smooth sound of the Pittsburgh Filter, and the warmth + punch of the unique Dynamics Controller. These enable you to not only create sounds that would be traditionally expected from an analog synthesizer but also to explore new sonic textures and performance possibilities.

Taiga oscillators
Waveforms generated by the three Taiga oscillators stretch beyond the basic geometric shapes and sounds associated with analog synthesis. Taiga waveforms pass through up to three proprietary, cascading waveshapers designed to precisely manipulate their symmetry and harmonic content. In addition, each oscillator includes a robust six-stage wave folder to add even more complexity and depth to the diverse sonic palate of Taiga.

The 'Pittsburgh Filter'
The Pittsburgh filter has defined the sound of Pittsburgh Modular from the moment it was introduced. A signature gummy and relaxed sound with no dead spots that has been tweaked to perfection. It offers a warm, smooth sweep through the full frequency range and a sweet resonance that does not roll off the low end. This generation of the Pittsburgh filter is specifically designed to ensure a remarkable interplay with Taiga’s oscillators.

Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller
Pittsburgh's new Dynamics technology imparts Taiga with a uniquely organic depth and presence. By simultaneously managing both amplitude and harmonic content, the Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller expands beyond the one-dimensional VCA found in other synthesizers. It does this by utilizing new advancements from traditional low pass gates to add additional definition and dimension to the voice of Taiga.

When used in low pass gate mode, sounds shed harmonic content and become warmer as they decrease in volume. This mimics how sound waves react to their environment. Because of this connection, the Taiga sounds more natural or complex compared to other instruments.

Echos, Mixer, MIDI, and much more
Pulling no punches in rounding out Taiga’s capabilities, Pittsburgh has included MIDI to CV conversion, mixer, preamp with soft clipping overdrive limiter circuit, analog bucket brigade delay, dual envelope generators, digital multi-modulation tool, LFO, noise generator, clock-synced arpeggiator, and an internal clock with tap tempo (can be externally synced too). You can use Taiga without patching or dive into its 60 patch points to use its components as separate modules with external devices or reroute its internal patching. The creative possibilities abound!

Introducing Function Junction - ADSR, Function Generator, LFO, & Mixer Extraordinaire!

Cre8audio® & Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers introduce a eurorack module packed with utilities for simple to complex modulation as well as mixing

April 26, 2022 - Cre8audio® & Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers today announced Function Junction, the latest creation stemming from their recently announced partnership.

Function Junction is a many-function-in-one module, made for use in eurorack format modular synthesizers.

Fun with functions…

Traditionally many-in-one multi-function modules are compromised of abstract functions and controls that when patched together can create basic or complex utilities. Often these modules are challenging to use and have some inherent limitations due to their abstract nature.

Cre8audio & Pittsburgh Modular’s take on the many-in-one multi-function module attacks these limitations head-on by eliminating the abstract. Each section of the module’s user interface is clearly separated into dedicated utility types with controls that will be familiar to the user. This approach increases the module’s capabilities while at the same time becoming more approachable for users of all levels.

Function Junction has dedicated ADSR, Function Generator, and LFO sections. Each section performs as a user would expect, as well as some having deeper functionality sprinkled in. Clever looping and external modulation add layers of possibilities.

The integrated attenuverting mixer ties all of the sections together, or not… Each section is routed by default through the attenuverers of the mixer but can also be repatched at the user’s whim.

Pittsburgh Modular Officially Announces Modular Effects Pedals

You saw the teaser pics here. The following is the official press release:

"Pittsburgh Modular makes modular effects pedals dream come true at Musikmesse 2015

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA: modern, fully-patchable, modular synthesizers and accessories manufacturer Pittsburgh Modular is proud to launch its Patch Box line of modular effects pedals — redefining both modular synthesis and the venerable stomp box by creating unique patchable effects units for guitarists and keyboardists — at Musikmesse 2015, January 15-18 in Frankfurt, Germany...

In a seismic shift in the definition of what a modular synthesizer can be, Pittsburgh Modular’s Patch Box redefines modular synthesis around the venerable stomp box by creating a monster performance device for guitarists and keyboardists alike — a patchable, modular system designed to handle anything. As a playground for unrestricted creativity, the Patch Box is a fully-patchable, customisable performance pedal enclosure. Its open architecture allows users to create unique effects unattainable with standard, fixed-signal path guitar effects. The Patch Box is not just another empty Eurorack case, however. Rather it can be packed to the gills with the functionality of (up to) five highly-tuned modules integrated into a heavy-duty steel enclosure that’s as road-ready as it is ready to use.

To protect the tone of user instruments, thoughtfully the Patch Box features a true BYPASS and a unique preamp with extremely high headroom in addition to a pair of fully-buffered outputs. Custom-engineered soft-limiting circuitry built into the preamp adds character without unwanted noise at higher gain settings. Said preamp has dual, buffered outputs to allow for complex signal routing, but for patching a single modulation or audio source into two destinations, the patchable signal splitter is a perfect solution. Also known as a MULTIPLE, the signal splitter has one input and two outputs, allowing any signal to be routed to two destinations.

Dual, assignable expression pedal INPUTS allow the Patch Box to easily integrate third-party expression pedals anywhere into the signal path to allow for realtime foot control of any voltage-controllable parameter or split the signal from the foot controller to control two parameters at once. Dual, assignable A/B foot switches — SWITCH 1 and SWITCH 2 — expand signal routing options. Perfect for use as on/off switches or to flip between two signals, the foot switches can be patched up to enable/disable individual modules or route audio and control voltages. Try patching a modulation source, such as an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) or external expression pedal, through the foot switch to enable or disable the modulation while playing. Patch the outputs of two effects into one of the foot switches to bounce between effects. With two independent, patchable foot switches to play with, there are countless options for realtime signal routing. The last stage of the Patch Box signal path is a master OUTPUT level control. Adjust the output signal level to connect with a wide range of devices.

Furthering flexibility, the Patch Box is available as an empty case, ready and waiting for user-customisation, courtesy of an ever-increasing selection of Pittsburgh Modular, Dwarfcraft Devices, or other compatible Eurorack-format modules. Meanwhile, the Patch Box is also available in a number of preconfigured so-called Complete and Core effects systems that highlight the wide range of Pittsburgh Modular and Dwarfcraft Devices effects modules — from stunning filters to character-rich analogue delays, sweeping phase shifters to nasty distortion, and much more besides... all are available to interact with and manipulate in entirely new ways! Why don’t we take a closer look at what’s on offer?

Being billed as “A Modular Exploration of Time and Space,” Time Box Complete comes complete with a Patch Box enclosure, Analog Replicator (wide-range analogue delay module), Reverb (voltage-controlled digital reverb module), Lopass Gate (integrated lowpass filter, VCA, and lowpass gate module), LFO2 (dual modulation source module), and Multiple (dual passive signal splitter), plus a 12-pack of patch cables from premier Eurorack modular synthesizer accessory specialist Nazca Audio. Alternatively, Time Box Core comprises Patch Box-housed Analog Replicator and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

Next up, Filter Box Complete makes modular filtering and signal-crushing downsampling a flexible musical experience, thanks to a Patch Box-housed Filter (multimode state variable filter module), Lopass Gate, Crush (analogue downsampling module), Follow (envelope follower module), LFO2, and Multiple, plus a 12-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables. ‘Downsizing’ somewhat, Filter Box Core offers filter sweeps courtesy of a Patch Box-housed Filter, Follow, and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

Phase Box Complete comes complete with a Patch Box enclosure preconfigured with a Phase Shifter (16-stage analogue phase shifter module), Lopass Gate, LFO2, and Multiple, plus a 12-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables. Phase Box Core makes massive liquid simplicity reality with Patch Box- housed Phase Shifter and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

A collaboration with Eau Claire, WI, USA-based handmade effects pedals and synthesizers specialist Dwarfcraft Devices, Dwarf Box Complete celebrates this partner company’s expertise in sonic destruction by partnering up their Big Distortion Sound Machine (parallel distortion module with two distinctly different fuzz flavours) with Pittsburgh Modular’s Filter, Chain Reactor (quadraphonic, voltage-influenced chaotic waveform generator), and Toolbox (multi-purpose slew, noise, sample & hold, and inverter) modules in a Patch Box enclosure, plus a 12-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables. Coming full circle, those favouring a more streamlined approach to a destructive palette could consider the Dwarf Box Core, comprising Patch Box- housed Big Distortion Sound Machine and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

There it is, then. Nine new products, no less — Patch Box enclosure, available without any modules, and two sets of four preconfigured systems, each offered as a Complete system, full of modules, or as a Core system, partially filled with room for additional modules. Pittsburgh Audio has truly made the dream of modular effects pedals come true. They will all be being demoed and displayed in Hall 5.1, Stand C53 at Musikmesse 2015, April 15-18 in Frankfurt, Germany. Come check them out!

"Designed and developed in partnership with Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers, West Pest is a powerful monophonic full voice, integrating imaginative sound-shaping tools with traditionally “west coast” concepts.
Test the pest!

West Pest’s unique sound has been influenced by Pittsburgh’s acclaimed Voltage Research Lab synthesizer.

The Pittsburgh-designed core oscillator technology has matured through the development of their SV-1 and later with Voltage Research Laboratory. This iteration’s waveforms have been optimized to be run through West Pest’s wavefolder.

Wave folding/shaping is integral to West Pest’s foundation. Wavefolding amplifies incoming waveforms. Rather than clipping or distorting, the wavefolder circuit folds the waveforms back onto themselves, creating upwards of six folds to add vast harmonic complexity and depth.

West Pest’s snappy, responsive articulation is accomplished by the “Dynamics Controller,” Pittsburgh Modular’s original invention. This unique concept is designed to behave like a traditional filter, a VCA, and an envelope generator, all at once. Upon note trigger, the filter opens fully and rapidly, producing a sharp, percussive attack. At release, the Dynamics Controller adds a ringing, resonant decay, resulting in a rounder, more musical sound. The Dynamics Controller is the product of years of research by Pittsburgh’s founder Richard Nicol, and Chief of R&D Michael Johnsen. Inspired by the developments of West Coast synthesis pioneer Don Buchla, Pittsburgh Modular has modernized and evolved these concepts, taking them into new realms, adding wider range, consistency, stability, and resonance control, as well as an infinitely variable, ringing decay.

Going beyond these analog sound-sculpting tools, West Pest also includes a deep new digital multi-mod /multi-function tool concept to add more flavor to the Pest’s production. The multi-mod lets users select between additional clock synced LFO, decay envelope, MIDI-controlled modulation, and random voltage generator modes.

West Pest’s compositional and performance capabilities are as robust as its ferocious sonic engine. West Pest can be controlled via MIDI, control voltage (CV/Gate), and its function keys, which double as a keyboard controller. Also included is an integrated sequencer & arpeggiator that can also be controlled via MIDI and is externally clockable.

A semi-modular synthesizer, West Pest has basically 8 different patchable modules (Oscillator, wave contour, dynamics controller, LFO, multi-mod tool, MIDI to CV converter, step sequencer, and button keyboard) with a whopping 18 Eurorack compatible patch points to plug into itself and your other gear. As a starting point, West Pest comes intuitively patched internally to create a bold and flexible full synth voice. Using the patch points enables users to reroute internal signal flow, as well as use with external eurorack format modules and synthesizers. To promote experimentation, Cre8audio has included a set of premium Nazca Noodles patch cables.

Pittsburgh Modular A Filter of Crows, Dynamics Controller Bat, & The Wolf Eurorack Modules

Pittsburgh Modular A Filter of Crows Eurorack Module Lab

Pittsburgh Modular Dynamics Controller Bat Eurorack Module Lab

Pittsburgh Modular The Wolf Eurorack Module Lab

video upload by Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

A Filter of Crows
Our classic Pittsburgh Filter pushed to the limits. The overdrive preamp from original Crow module paired with switchable filter response, resonance instability mode, and voltage control over both frequency and resonance. A Filter of Crows can be both menacing and subtle with a massive sonic palette. Shifting from buttery smooth sweeps to punishing, overdriven noise without ever sounding harsh or uncomfortable. This is the most interesting variant of the Pittsburgh Filter we have created.

A Filter of Crows is a unique filter module that builds on the concept of the highly sought-after Safari Series #1 module, 'Crow'. It combines three Pittsburgh-designed 100% analog technologies.

Ultra-high-gain preamp:
The first is an ultra-high-gain preamp circuit. The preamp, taken directly from the original Crow offers a unique up to 75x of variable gain overdrive. This circuit provides unmatched dimensions of overdrive without sounding harsh. Additionally, the circuit can be completely bypassed to allow for a completely clean exploration of the other aspects of the module.

PGH Filter:
Next is a 12db State Variable 'no-dead-spot' Filter, The classic PGH Filter with manually selectable and stackable filter responses. Lowpass, bandpass, and highpass filter responses can be enabled or disabled individually for instant parallel processing.

The PGH filter has been continually refined over the last 12 years of research and altered to fit the demands of each system that it has been a part of. One of its unique defining characteristics is its ability to offer a complete sweepable range without any noticeable dead spots. Dead spots are uneven / muted portions of the swept range due to non-linearities in the circuitry. The PGH filter has no noticeable dead spots and is voiced to interact well with the high-gain preamp circuit. The result is a rich, even, fully sweepable range.

Resonant Stability Circuit:
Lastly is Pittsburgh’s Resonant Stability Circuit. This circuit enables the PGH filter to provide near-infinite resonance without slipping into self-oscillation, unless the user wants it to. Set to stable, Crows will not self-oscillate. It operates as a clean, organic filter. Set to unstable mode, the character of Crows changes dramatically. At normal settings, the incoming signal modulates the self-oscillating filter to produce harmonically complex sounds. In more extreme settings, Crows will start to struggle with controlling the oscillating resonance, adjusting the resonance shifts from ringing fuzz to heavy distortion to an extremely musical total failure."

Dynamics Controller Bat
Both a resonant filter and a VCA, the Pittsburgh Modular Dynamics Controller Bat is a modern re-interpretation of Don Buchla’s famous 'lopass' gate. The original lowpass gate was limited to a static response time that varied from unit to unit. For better or worse, this made each lowpass gate a little different. The Dynamics Controller Bat solves this issue and expands on the original concept by adding a unique voltage controllable response curve and variable resonance to the lowpass gate. Nothing has more depth, sounds more natural, or feels more alive than the our Dynamics Controller. Not only is this module unique in the world of modular synthesis, it sounds amazing.

Both a resonant filter and a VCA, the Pittsburgh Modular Dynamics Controller Bat is a modern reinterpretation of Don Buchla’s famous 'lowpass' gate.

Unlike a VCA, which simply changes the loudness of the sound without modifying the harmonic content, the lowpass gate circuit uniquely simulates the characteristics of how sounds interact in natural environments.

When used in lowpass gate mode, louder sounds contain more harmonic content and quieter sounds contain less harmonic content. The result is a more organic, complex, and rounded sound.

Don Buchla’s original lowpass gate (LPG) was limited to a static response time that varied from unit to unit. For better or worse, this made each lowpass gate a little different. Pittsburgh’s research that has made its way into the Dynamics Controller Bat solves this issue. It modernizes Don Buchla's concept by adding a unique voltage controllable response curve and variable resonance to the lowpass gate. This allows for all the sonic depth of the LPG while providing the same kind of sustain control offered by a more traditional VCA. The resulting Pittsburgh innovation is the best of both worlds, natural and alive sound, that's completely controllable."

The Wolf Channel Strip VCA
The idea was to design a VCA that makes everything sound better. Through the use of a custom Wolf preamp circuit, parametric EQ, and a high quality, linear VCA, The Wolf adds depth and presence to any patch. A custom preamplifier with variable gain control shifts between .5x and 7x gain followed by a soft clipping limiter. Results range from fully transparent to warm saturation to overdrive depending on how hard it is pushed. A three stage, 15db EQ pairs sweeping low and mid range channels with a fixed frequency high shelf followed by a second soft clipping limiter identical to the one in the preamp to keep it smooth. Green, Yellow, and Red LEDs are both fun and informative! Located after the EQ and before the VCA in the signal path, the LEDs offer insight into the audio signal.

The Wolf is a Channel Strip VCA designed to improve and provide more control over any input source. It does this through another three unique circuits.

Wolf Preamp
The Wolf’s Preamp is a custom preamplifier with variable gain control shifts between .5x and 7x gain followed by a soft-clipping limiter. The soft-clipping limiter is a way to control the amplitude of the signal while avoiding harsh distortion. Depending on how hard it is pushed, the results of running a signal through this circuit range from fully transparent to warm saturation to overdrive.

Wolf three-stage Semi-Parametric 15db EQ
The Wolf also has a three-stage Semi-Parametric 15db EQ featuring sweeping low and mid-range channels, as well as a fixed frequency high shelf. The EQ section is followed by an additional soft-clipping limiter identical to the one in the preamp. This evens out the signal keeping the audio sounding smooth.

Wolf VCA
The Wolf’s VCA is a low noise, high quality, linear voltage controlled amplifier with both manual level and CV attenuator controls.

Metering
No channel Strip would be complete without metering. Wolf’s LED Meter provides Green, Yellow, and Red LEDs for fun and informative listening. Located after the EQ and before the VCA in the signal path, the LEDs offer useful insight into the audio signal."

Price, Availability, and More Information The retail price for the A Filter of Crows, Dynamics Controller Bat, and The Wolf Channel Strip VCA is $249 USD each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 A Filter of Crows, 250 Dynamics Controller Bat, and 200 The Wolf Channel Strip VCA modules. The modules are available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding the A Filter of Crows, Dynamics Controller Bat, and The Wolf Channel Strip VCA Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

The Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer is the expandable version of a classic. A standalone, fully modular synthesizer styled after the great monosynths of the past, the Foundation 3.1+ has no hardwired signal path or fixed voice architecture to restrict creativity. An all analog signal path driving massive oscillators and multiple filters pushes the Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer to new worlds of musical creativity. An unpatched Foundation 3.1+ offers a clean slate for sonic exploration and sound design, and the open format of a modular synthesizer allows for greater control and a deeper understanding of synthesis.

The Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer is designed to function as a standalone instrument. However, the Foundation 3.1+ is a 100% eurorack compatible modular synthesizer. The system is made up of 13 individual eurorack format synthesizer modules which can be removed, reorganized, and replaced with Pittsburgh Modular or other eurorack compatible modules. The Foundation 3.1+ Synthesizer uses the Pittsburgh Modular Move [208] Black Case and Power Rail to house and power the modules."

Introducing Capt'n BIG-O and Mr. Phil Ter by Cre8audio

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

In this video resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) shares Cre8audio's newest modules: Capt 'n BIG-O and Mr. Phil Ter. Capt'n BIG-O is a fully analog oscillator built from the ground up to sound uniquely warm and huge. The oscillator also sports a wavefolder and a drive circuit, both of which you can route external signals into. Mr Phil Ter is a classic transistor ladder filter with a built in VCA and envelope generator. Along with these two new modules Cre8audio also released a two tier all wood rack stand for their popular Nifty Cases.

Mr. Phil Ter introduction, feature overview, and noise
video upload by Cre8audio

"What if your filter module also had a VCA and an envelope generator? Would a name like Mr. Phil Ter be a good name for it? Probably not right? Well, we at Cre8audio never claimed to be marketing geniuses (except for our jerk marketing person, but we rarely listen to them).

Anyway, check out Mr. Phil Ter, or 'Phil' as we affectionately call it. It's 12hp of filter, VCA, and envelope generator for all your sound manipulation needs."

Pittsburgh Modular New Modules Llama Kick and Polar Bear Snare Patch Lab with Richard Nicol

video upload by Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

"Richard discuss and demo the Llama Kick Drum and Polar Bear Snare Drum modules. Should all analog drums sound like an 808? We hope not."

"Pittsburgh Modular Safari Series 3 showcases the first results of our research into analog drum synthesis. These circuits were designed as part of a larger project but large projects are slow and we are excited about these sounds NOW so a small batch of modules for us and our friends was necessary.

The Llama and Polar Bear are an attempt at creating realistic(-ish) kick and snare drums using our own unique designs. These modules are not based on the sound of any famous drum machine, instead they represent a new approach to building synthesized kick and snare drums informed by the world around us. The results are something that sound not completely unlike kick and snare drums, but with a flexibility that bends beyond the limits of a physical instrument.

Llamas Make the Best Kick Drums
The Llama is a majestic creature known almost exclusively for the unique way it generates kick drum sounds when it is angry. Our module pays tribute to this soulful, sonic wonder. We think it sounds very nice.

Polar Bear Rhymes with Snare
Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend the majority of their life on the sea ice hunting for the perfect snare drum. Most hunts end in failure. However, with a little bit of luck, the Polar Bear is rewarded with a glorious snap! We think this one sounds very nice too.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for the Llama and Polar Bear is $199 each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 Llamas and 200 Polar Bears. The modules are available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding the Llama and Polar Bear Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

Side note…
We designed a new set of knobs. This may be the nerdiest, and therefore the coolest thing we have ever done! Llama and Polar Bear are the first Pittsburgh Modular modules to ship with our new knobs. A color forward, modern design that pairs the soft touch exterior with a bold interior and integrated indicator. We now have four new knob sizes with infinite color options ready for all the future Pittsburgh Modular and Cre8audio projects!"

Limited Edition Pittsburgh Modules Starting with the Dual Ring

via Pittsburgh Modular

"We are starting a line of limited edition modules as a way to share some of our more esoteric designs with the world. The modules will range from chaotic and noisy, to simple, to over the top. Each production run will be limited to 50 modules, and each module will be hand signed and numbered on the rear of the panel. All limited edition modules will be available for sale exclusively on shop.pittsburghmodular.com, and once they are gone, they are gone.

We are pleased to announce the Dual Ring, our first limited edition module. The Dual Ring houses a pair of ring modulators with linked inputs and an output mixer, creating unique sonic and signal routing possibilities. The Dual Ring was a request of our good friend Dave Skipper. We were a little skeptical at first but the results prove this was an inspired idea."

[The Dual Ring houses a pair of ring modulators with linked inputs and an output mixer creating unique sonic and signal routing possibilities. Each ring modulator offers 3 types of effects based around the classic ring modulation circuit.

A ring modulator multiplies two audio inputs together resulting in a unique form of amplitude modulation or frequency mixing. The output is the sum and difference of the frequencies present in each waveform. Ring modulation produces a signal rich in harmonic and non-harmonic tones often sounding metallic or bell-like.

The individual ring modulation circuits in the Dual Ring can be used independently, mixed, or chained together resulting in a large palate of uniquely rich and complex tones.

Effect 1: Ring Modulator - (Switch Full Left) Outputs the sum and difference of the X and Y inputs.

Effect 2: Floating Z Modulator - (Switch in Center Position) Outputs the sum and difference of the X and Y inputs summed with the ambient voltage within the circuit.

Effect 3: Linear Amplitude Modulator - (Switch Full Right) Outputs the sum and difference of the X and Y inputs summed with the carrier (Y) signal."

via Pittsburgh Modular on what it's like to be a boutique modular manufacturer and why they decided to come out with the limited edition modules:

"Three years ago Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers started as a crazy idea to sell a few strange, handmade modules out of a basement. Thanks to your enormous response to those modules we've grown meteorically.

Shipping modules and instruments in large numbers takes a tremendous amount of time and resources. Resources that we can not commit to every idea we have. While we have been working hard to expand and improve our manufacturing capabilities, at heart Pittsburgh Modular is still a small company that remains committed to producing high quality, hand made electronic instruments. Over the past few years, we have chosen to focus our energy on modules that make up the core of our amazing synthesizers. Because of this, we have a lot of concepts and a lot of modules that were designed but never sold. Most of our ideas are too strange to fit in with what Pittsburgh Modular has become and it would be impossible for us to maintain a product line that included all of our designs. Still, we want the modules for our systems so here is the idea..."
